Instant Messaging using Cisco Jabber Technical Support: 617-627-3376 [email protected] What is Cisco Jabber? Cisco Jabber is an all-in-one communication and collaboration tool. Instant Messaging using Jabber is available to all Tufts users now. [Note: Tufts is also using Jabber for the Voice over IP (VoIP) phone service that is rolling out by department to the community.] Login 1. Open the Cisco Jabber application. (Note: this will be installed on your machine automatically.) 2. Login using your Tufts login and password. 3. Click the Sign me in when Cisco Jabber starts checkbox to avoid this step in the future. 4. A second window will open with another login prompt. This is logging you into Webex to complete the integration points between Jabber and Webex. Instant Message/Chat 1. Enter the contacts name in the Search or call field. 2. Select the Chat button. 3. Enter your text in the separate chat window. Presence Indicator To the left of any name you will see a presence indicator that will be red, yellow, green or grey. This is a way of letting others know if you are online or not, and available or not. The drop down menu allows users to select a setting or create custom settings. 1. Click Custom ____ (Available, Away, Do Not Disturb) 2. Enter your custom message in the text box NOTE: Instant Messages sent to someone offline will be received the next time that person logs in.

What  is  Cisco  Jabber?  Cisco Jabber is an all-in-one communication and collaboration tool. Instant Messaging using Jabber is available to all Tufts users now. [Note: Tufts is also using Jabber for the Voice over IP (VoIP) phone service that is rolling out by department to the community.]

Login  1. Open the Cisco Jabber application. (Note: this will be

installed on your machine automatically.)

2. Login using your Tufts login and password.

3. Click the Sign me in when Cisco Jabber starts

checkbox to avoid this step in the future.

Group  Chat  Group chat allows a person to send a chat to everyone in the group. All members of the group can view all the previous chats.

Join  a  Group  Chat  1. Click on the Chat Rooms tab 2. Click on All rooms 3. Click Join

If a lock icon appears next to a group chat room, it has been locked to only invited users.

Create  a  Group  Chat  1. Click on the Gear icon on the upper right of the Jabber

window. Select File > New> Chat room

2. Enter the room information. • Enter a Name and Description for the room. • Select Public (anyone can Join) or Restricted

(accessible by members only). • Click Add to “My rooms” to see the room in the My

rooms tab. • Enter a Moderator (permissions to add/remove

members) • Click Create.

Mobile  Device  App  You can also access instant messaging through your personal mobile device. Jabber has an app for Apple and Android devices.

1. From the App Store or Google Play, locate the Cisco Jabber App. This app will use a blue icon. (Note: Do not download the app with the green icon called Cisco Jabber Voice.)

2. Download the Jabber App. 3. Enter your Tufts credentials and tap Log In.
