Adolescent MarijuanaUse Leaves Lasting Mental DeficitsPsychologists Terrie Moffitt andAvshalom Caspi uncovered thatpersistent, dependent use of marijuana before age 18 causes lasting harm to a person’s intelli-gence, attention and memory. Their study, published in the Pro-ceedings of the National Academyof Science, indicates the brain is especially vulnerable to damagefrom marijuana use during the adolescent growth period.

“The Duke community embodies a profoundwork ethic, extraordinary talent and a

boundless capacity for strategic thinking. My deepest hope for students is that

they experience the happiness thatcomes from getting lost in an equation, in

a sentence, in the cells of a petri dish, inthe elegance of an algorithm, or inthe progress of a novel. Our liberal

arts and sciences education prepares students to adapt andintegrate their knowledge, and

to find their place in our rapidlychanging world. And Duke

teaches students a great appreciation for humanity's rich

breadth of history and society, arts, sciences and culture.”
