Celebrating 25 Years of Loyal PlayersBob Paoluccio

Thanks For Playing, Rancheria Style!

“Kudos to Jackson Rancheria Casino. There is something very good about Jackson Casino that all other casinos do not have and cannot duplicate. For me, I’ll call it a comfortable place to visit. And I have been a regular visitor since it was primarily a Bingo Hall, a few slot machines, little paper pull tabs (match and win), a small Snack Bar that served good fast food, and good service.

“I’ve seen the Casino grow over the years. And it gets better each and every time I visit. The grounds with the Christmas decorations makes one feel at home. All of the employees that I meet are my favorites and all of them are always courteous. They call me the ‘Hot Chocolate Guy’.”

Mary & Tom MartinezMary and Tom Martinez have been

coming to Jackson Rancheria since 1985 when they bought property in the area and began building a new home.

“The Rancheria was a great outlet for us as far as entertainment,” recalls Mary. “I love Bingo. At that time there were few slot machines - we used to play in all the tournaments - Men’s, Ladies, Seniors. The young men that were running the tournaments were all so super - there was Leon, Ben, Robbie, and Mike, just to name a few.”

“We would have breakfast in the little cafe in the Bingo Hall and felt very lucky the mornings Margaret and

her brother or her son or both would be in there having coffee. They were all so friendly and made you feel like part of the family. Over the years we have seen many changes and growth in the Rancheria. Her passing was a great loss to all who knew her - she was one heck of a lady.”

“Its hard to believe it has been 25 years. Happy Anniversary Jackson Rancheria.”

Dear Jackson Rancheria,I’m writing you personally

because I feel you should know how wonderful your people, Hotel and Casino are.

(Recently) my aide and I had gone to (another casino). After about six hours we wanted to move on. We had family tell us that we should try Jackson, so we decided to check your place out.

The lady (Sandy) at the Players Club was very nice. Sandy went out of her way to make sure we knew all about the casino. Then at 10 p.m. we realized we were tired and should not try to drive back home (Sonoma).

Sandy got on the phone and

called about three people and got them to open up a room for us. This was late in her shift and she was off for the next couple of days. Asking for something late on someone’s Friday isn’t something I’ve found works. But she helped us out and went to check on us later to make sure all was good.

We all found the hotel lady and the rest of your staff very polite and helpful. We will be back and also have told many of our friends to try you out. You should be very proud of your people, and please let them know that I think they are great.

Is there a Jackson Rancheria employee who always makes you feel special? Or one who went out of their way to make your visit perfect?

Tell us about your experiences with our employees and we may spotlight them in an upcoming issue of The Arrow.

Simply email your comments to Carol Cook at [email protected].

Tell us about your favorite employee

Jason Combs has worked at Jackson Rancheria for almost half his life and is one of the longest serving employees. He’s also a prime example of what Rancheria Style® truly means.

Although his position as Executive Casino Manager means he deals with challenging and often negative events, he also thoroughly understands the need for and value of great guest service.

“The best part of the job,” he says, “is being able to make things right. At the end of the day, that’s what we (Casino Managers) enjoy doing. That makes the casino successful.”

“We’ve been given the opportunity and authority from the Tribe to do things on their behalf. It’s a unique opportunity to play the part of the bad guy in the interest of guest service. The front line employees have to deal with negative situations and it is nice for them to have someone else come in and handle it. It saves face for the employees and the casino, and the guests too. We’re the end of the line. The employees can pass the buck to us. We don’t mind the guests being mad at us as long as they keep coming back. Great guest service helps both the employees and guests.”

“We don’t take it personally,” he adds. “I very rarely take it home. You have to stay on top of how you manage your stress, what you leave at the door.”

Jason got his first glimpses of guest service at a variety of restaurant jobs he held before joining the Jackson Rancheria team.

Born in Los Angeles, he grew up in Northern California. After high school in San Jose he immediately started working at a variety of jobs, some full time, some under the table.

He was a sandwich maker at Togo’s, and then worked for a number of years at the various restaurants located at what is now the Waffle Shop in Jackson. He did it

all - bus boy, salad bar, waiter, cook. He also worked at the Jackson Taco Bell for a while.

“I was living day to day,” he recalls, “no goals, no responsibilities, single, no kids.”

Four years before Jackson Rancheria opened our first Bingo Hall, TKC Vineyards was already an established winery in Amador County.

Owners Harold and Monica Nuffer started in the winemaking business like many others in the industry - they loved wine. Harold would create homemade reds when he was based in China Lake in the early 70’s; Yes, he was a rocket scientist.

In 1981, they built TKC and made the first for-sale batch of Zinfandel, while still keeping his day job and commuting 460 miles one way each month to work at the winery.

His skills as an engineer only helped excel his winemaking ability - attention to detail, a bit of science, and a passion for quality is what makes TKC wine a unique and a great wine for any occasion.

“We started out making homemade wine for a few years,” recalls Harold. “And after some schooling on the subject, we wanted to start a winery and decided to look for some property where we could get the kind of grapes we wanted.”

Harold, Monica, and family,

came to the Amador region in 1978, to purchase property for future retirement with the intent to

possibly develop a winery. This led to the small winery being named after their daughters Tierre, Karina, and Courtnay, now known as TKC Vineyards.

Like many Amador area wineries, TKC is best known for great reds. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is made from a small grape and small cluster

that is unique to this grape clone. This Cabernet Sauvignon clone produces a dark concentrated wine with jammy fruit aromas of plum and berry with soft tannins for a long lasting after taste. It has an elegant youthful flavor now, with a promising maturing beauty. The winery also produces Mourvedre, Zinfandel, Port, and D.O.G.

The tasting room is open Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment. For more information visit tkcvineyards.com.

Jackson Rancheria players and employees once again proved how

Jackson Rancheria caresabout the community

generous they can be when disaster strikes.

In less than a month a donation box in the casino lobby was filled with $824.97. And our players donated $13,880 in points and comps to the cause.

The Jackson Rancheria Band of Miwuk Indians matched the funds dollar for dollar, doubling the $14,704.97 into over $29,000 for the American Red Cross.

Thank you to everyone who contributed. With your help, the American Red Cross is making a difference.

All that changed the day he had what he calls “a meltdown blow-up day” at a restaurant and walked out. Several days later he came to Jackson Rancheria and was hired on the spot. That was October 1991, over 18 years ago.

He started out working the pull tab machines and Bingo, and worked in Slots (then called Video) until he was named a Casino Manager in 2000. Since then he has worked his way up to Senior Casino Manager, Assistant Executive Casino Manager, and finally Executive Casino Manager in May 2008.

In that time, Jason says, “The casino has changed tremendously. It’s never stopped changing.”

One of the biggest changes was the introduction of TITO - Ticket In Ticket Out - machines, replacing the old machines that printed out a receipt that then had to be cashed. Although some resisted the change at first, that resistance quickly disappeared and pretty much the entire casino world has embraced TITO.

For Jason, the most important things are home and family, and he has two of each.

“This place is like my home. The people who own this place are like my family. The people who work here, and the guests too, are like my family. I want to thank them. To all who know me, I

thank you. I owe this place more than I can ever repay. I’ll never let them down.”

He also has a wife and 4½ year old son who are his main priority away from work. “When not at work I spend time with my son. My wife and son mean more to me than anything. I am trying to foster my son to be a good human being. I enjoy the opportunity to be a parent. My family is my priority right now.”

Although known around the casino as something of a comedian, always ready with a joke, always seeing the humorous side of things, Jason has a serious side too. He says following the economy and the recession is something of a hobby with him, and he’s cautiously optimistic.

“The last couple of years have been difficult. Looking forward I see a very slow recovery of the economy. We will recover, we always do. I see greatness in the future. When the time comes and things are going good, everyone will enjoy the good times again. It’s going to take a little time. We’re all feeling it. Time will bring good times again.”

And Jason has recently taken a big step for himself. He’s quit smoking (and he says it’s OK to mention that so everyone can help him keep on track.)

One thing he is sure of is that great guest service is what makes Jackson Rancheria special. “We’re never going to sacrifice guest service. We want our guests to have a good experience here. This is a value oriented business.”
