Character counts…...
Last week, I was in Sun City, running some errands for my 85 year old father. As I
was coming out of the post office, I noticed another old timer making his way up to the door,
pushing his rather cool-looking walker. He was still a ways away, but I decided to wait the
extra 30 seconds and make sure that he got in without a problem. He was dressed like all
the old guys from his generation and on his head was his World War II hat, labeled with his
ship and crew that he had served with. As he walked past me, he smiled, patted my arm
and said, “Thanks for your kindness young man.”
Several times, throughout the course of the day, we have opportunities to make
someone else’s day just a little bit brighter, and maybe easier. Unless we know first hand
what’s going on in a person’s life, we have no idea if that little bit of ease or brightness will
be appreciated. However, it sure makes us feel better and also is very addictive. Before
you know it, you’re going out of your way to help others. Simple acts of kindness that cost
us nothing may be the difference between someone having a good day or not.
As we head into the giving season, I challenge all of us to expect less and give more.
While money can always help a situation, time and friendship can be just as valuable. Let’s
try to worry less about what we don’t have and focus more on what we do. Reach out your
hand and my guess is someone will take it.
May all of you have a happy, healthy and relaxing holiday season and remember….no mat-
ter where or when…..Character Counts! By Preston Fairchild, Assistant PrincipalBy Preston Fairchild, Assistant PrincipalBy Preston Fairchild, Assistant PrincipalBy Preston Fairchild, Assistant Principal

ELEMENTARY AGE CHILDREN

Search Institute – www.search-institute.org
Support:
• Encourage children’s passions and interests
• Answer children’s questions. If you don’t know the answer, admit it and work together to find it.
• When you and a child disagree, show you still care, and encourage other adults to do the same.
Empowerment:
• Encourage children to write letters to the editor of your local paper about issues that are important to them.
• Ask children what they like and do not like about their daily routines. Make changes to improve them.
Expectations:
• Encourage schools, neighbors, organizations, and communities to have consistent boundaries and consequences so children know how to act in different settings.
• Be firm about boundaries that keep kids safe. Don’t negotiate these boundaries.
• Challenge children to do their best in school, and help them whenever you can.
Constructive Use of Time:
• Allow children to have one or two regular out of home activities that are led by caring adults.
• Teach children to balance their time so they gradually learn how to avoid getting too busy or too bored.
• Volunteer in programs and activities for children, such as sports, clubs, religious activities, music, or others.
Commitment to Learning:
• Set daily homework guidelines for children and provide a place for them to study.
• Let children read to you every day as they learn to read. Show them that you are excited and proud about their reading.
• Help children find ways to learn more about subjects that really interest them.
Positive Values:
• Have children write thank-you notes or show their appreciation in some other way whenever they receive gifts.
• Encourage families to participate in service activities together.
• Talk to children about specific examples of people acting on their values.
Social Competency:
• Encourage children to use words rather than just actions to communicate.
• Encourage children to develop more skills in areas that interest them.
• Find ways for children to spend time with people who look, act, think, and talk in different ways.
Positive Identity:
• When children are facing problems or difficult times, help them think of all the possible ways they could deal with the situation. Then help them pick what they
want to do.
• Encourage children to find inspirational, positive role models.
• Talk with children about what gives your life meaning and a sense of purpose.
