In the past, at the location of the JAL MAHALlake, there was a natural depression wherewater used to accumulate. During 15! AD,when there was a se"ere famine in this regionthere was conse#uent acute shortage of water.$hen the ruler of Amer was, therefore,moti"ated to %uild a dam to store water too"ercome the se"ere hardships caused %& thefamine to the people inha%iting the region. Adam was constructed, initiall& using earth and

#uart'ite, across the eastern "alle& %etweenAmer hills and Amagarh hills. $he dam was latercon"erted into a stone masonr& structure in the1(th centur&. $he dam, as e)isting now is a%out*++ metres long. It is pro"ided with three sluice

gates for release of water for irrigation ofagricultural land in the down stream. incethen, the dam, the lake and the palace in itsmidst ha"e undergone se"eral rounds ofrestoration under "arious rulers of -aasthan

$he lake, situated to the north of Jaipur cit& lies%etween Amer and Jaipur. It has a water spread area of *++acres and is enclosed %& the Ara"alli hills on the north,west and eastern sides, while the southern side consists of

Within the lake area, the ground is made up of a

thick mantle of soil, blown sand and alluvium. Forest

denudation, particularly in the hilly areas, has

caused soil erosion compounded by wind and water

action. Due to this, silt built up in the lake

resulting in a raising of the bed level of the lake.

The hills surrounding the lake area have quartzite

rock formations.

Rock exposures on the surface in some parts of the

project area have also been utilized for constructingbuildings
