Flora Restaurant

The brief was to design a restaurant which embod-ied the theme ‘out of this world’. Flora Resturant does this by creating a unique and enthralling at-mosphere. The artificial steel tree in the centre rep-resents the Nordic mythological idea that the comos is structured like a tree and that all the worlds and stars are held in place by it. Organic shapes and forms define the architecture, which creates the impression of an alien building.

French Folly

French culture has always placed a large emphasis on reening things untill they are considered perfect. A lot of importance is placed upon tradition, as it it an ac-knolwdgement of people who have taken something and reened it to a point where it has been admired and celebrated . The French Folly pays homage to the respect of tradition but also the French culture of pushing forward the boundaries and continuing to create new things and ideas. It does by being inspired by famous buildings and iconic French features whilst abstracting them and adding a modern urban twist. The French Folly is a place that people yearn to be. It is a modern urban twist. The French Folly is a place that people yearn to be. It is a place for people to relax whilst immersing themselves in the French language and culture.

There are four principle discussion areas; there are 2 private booths that have hidden sliding doors to shut out noise. These sliding doors are glass so as to ensure that no one feels claustraphobic. The standard classroom has a U connguration and can easily accommodate up to ten people. The lounge area can sit up to half a dozen people and is essen-tial for more casual discourse. Green Bridge

8

The Green Bridge is an incredibly unique pedestrian bridge that finds its inspiration in the rainforests and skyscrapers of the Gold Coast. It will be the gateway to the new much lauded Culural Precinct, and will be a iconic bridge that serves as an attraction itself. The surrounding areas have been designed to create a contiuous, safe and festive at-mosphere from the tourist strip too the Cultural Precinct.

The bridge uses a single pan prestressed con-crete cantilever structural system and a has a span of 92m. Ensuring the surrounding entrances and areas were lively and welcoming was a big perioity as the bridge is linking an existing tourist area with a planned one.

The existing community centre al-though in good condition had many aws that needed to be res-loved. The renovated community centre is modern, colourful and ac-cessible. It is a prominent buidling that demands attention and warmly invites people inside. Its crisp and angled forms create a dy-namic and interesting aesthetic that completely reinvent the build-ing.

The community centre includes a number of additions such as the workshop which can house local artists as well as the charity organi-sation called the Men’s Shed. A new foyer and reception that opens up onto a major pedestrian intersection was also added. Showintersection was also added. Show-casing local art whether it be from established artists or youths is a re-current theme in the building, with it including a graffiti wall and art display.

Transparent Bus Stop

5

The Transparent Bus Stop was de-signed for competition in Denmark, which called for a bus stop which was made from transparent materi-als. The bus stop which I designed repsonded to this by taking the concept of a traditional Danish Longhouse and recreating in modern and transparent materials. This way the bus stop would not only be unique it is construction, it would also reflect the local culture and identity.

Grandstand

10

The grandstand is anchored to the campus through a strong pedestrian axis that connects it directly to the campus hub. This axis runs through the centre of the grandstand out on to the AFL field. On either side of the axis sits a grandstand that supports 59 people each. Further expansion for seating if needed has been planned in stage 2 and 3. The proposal embraces the ideas of functionalism and transparency. The layout is direct and open planned. Sustainability plays a large role in the design.

Following the retro-fit of the existing senior library into general purpose class rooms, there was a opportunity to construct a new library. Rather than limit the new building to the function of a traditional library, a knowledge centre was proposed as a way to greater utilize modern technology and better prepare students with the skills need to succeed at university.

Informing design factors:

• Role of the traditional library (space for book-shelves and places to sit and read)

• Respond to its prominent position at the junc-ture of the public streets and entrance to the senior precinct

• Accommodate a variety of learning types to cater to all individuals and activities

• Create a atmosphere that make people feel connected and creative

• I.T. focused• Sustainable, subtropical design

Bureligh Waters Library

The Burleigh Waters Library is a 400m2 extension and refurbishment of the existing library. The library seeks to create a relaxed and social place that has an exciting retail feel to it. It achieves this through the implementa-tion of a lane way that connects the site with the Burleigh Waters Community Centre and the surrounding area. The lane way serves as a primary axis upon which a whole range of spaces and activities branch off, from either inside or outside the library.
