MEET LOUIS ROWE- LouisRoweentershissecondseasonbackatJamesMadisonafterDirectorofAthleticsJeffBourneannouncedhishiringasthe10thmen’sbasketball head coach in program history on March 31, 2016. A former JMU student-athlete and assistant coach, Rowe most recently served as the top assistant coach at Bowling Green. “Asweworkedthroughthesearchprocessandspokewithadistinguishedpoolofcoaches,itbecameclearthatLouiswasthebestfittoleadour student-athletes at James Madison,” Bourne said. “Louis has been connected to success at JMU both as a student-athlete and as a coach. Following a long, successful professional career overseas, he started as a college assistant at JMU and went on to further develop his coaching resume with progressive opportunities.” “Louis has demonstrated an ability to develop talent, and his prowess as a recruiter is impressive in our key geographic areas and beyond,” Bournesaid.“HeispassionateaboutJMU,andI’mconfidentthatpassionwillspillovertoourfanbaseaswerestorethesupportforourprogramthatexistedwhenheplayedhere.LouisperfectlyfitstheJMUculture,theacademicfocusofthisinstitutionandouremphasisonthestudent-athlete experience.”

After beginning his coaching career at JMU in 2007, Rowe returned to Harrisonburg after successful stints as an assistant coach at Rider, FIU and Bowling Green. RowefirstservedJMUasagraduateassistantandassistantcoachfrom2007-12underheadcoachesDeanKeenerandMattBrady.Heactedasanassistantcoachforthe2007-08campaign,whichsawtheDukeswintheirmostgamesinfiveyears,beforepursuinghismaster’sdegree from JMU as a graduate assistant under Coach Brady from 2008-10. After being elevated to assistant coach for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, Rowe helped lead the Dukes to 33 wins and worked closely withforwardDenzelBowles,whosetaJMUsingle-seasonrecordwith290reboundsandbecametheprogram’sfirstMid-MajorAll-Americanbefore beginning his professional career in Lithuania and earning an opportunity in the NBA Summer League. During the 2015-16 season, Rowe served in the lead assistant role for Bowling Green, working primarily with the Falcons’ perimeter players astheteamadvancedtotheMid-AmericanConferencesemifinals.HeguidedguardsZackDennyandWesAlcegairetodouble-digitscoringseasons, as the duo averaged 10.6 and 10.2 points per game, respectively. In his two years at FIU, Rowe helped guide the Panthers to 31 wins from 2013-15 and worked closely with Adrian Diaz, who was named to the Conference USA All-Defensive Team in 2014-15 while setting a school record with 99 blocks, a mark that ranked sixth in the country. Rowe also spent one year at Rider, where he helped guide the Broncos to a 19-15 record and a berth in the 2013 CollegeInsider.com Tourna-ment.HekickedoffhiscoachingcareerwithstintsatOsceola(Fla.)HighSchoolandDixieHollisHighSchoolinSt.Petersburg,Fla.,whilehecompleted his JMU undergraduate degree in business administration. While at JMU, Rowe also established himself as a standout player for the Dukes after transferring from the University of Florida and sitting out the 1992-93 season under NCAA transfer rules. Under legendary coach “Lefty” Driesell, he was a Second Team All-CAA selection in 1993-94 when he averaged 14.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game and was a First Team All-CAA choice in 1994-95 when he averaged 21.7 points and 5.7 rebounds.

DUKES AMONG COUNTRY’S YOUNGEST TEAMS- The new-look JMU men’s basketball team rates among the youngest teams in Division I in terms of returners, returning minutes, returning points and other categories:- Mississippi Valley State is the only other school in all of Division I that returns as few as two players from last season, while Western Kentucky is just the third to return only two players that saw playing time in 2016-17.- The Dukes are among the country’s leaders in multiple other categories: -Total Minutes returning (1,881): 10th - Leader: Mississippi Valley State (386) -Percentage of minutes returning (28.2%): 23rd - Leader: Mississippi Valley State (5.9%) -Percentage of points returning (23.2%): 23rd - Leader: Mississippi Valley State (3.2%)

JMU BASKETBALL TO OFFER COST OF ATTENDANCE-InaccordancewithNCAAguidelines,JamesMadisonUniversityhasbegunofferingcostofattendanceaspartofathleticscholarships for student-athletes participating in men’s and women’s basketball beginning in the 2017-2018 academic year.- The cost of attendance stipends are intended to cover the additional costs of attending school beyond tuition and fees. Thesecosts include transportation and personal expenses. No student fees will be used to cover the estimated $125,000 annualcosttooffercostofattendancetothebasketballteams.-TheuniversityhasidentifiedinitialfundsfromtheNCAAStudent-AthleteEnhancementFundandfromanewannualsupple-mentforstudentbenefitstocoverthecostsforthefirstseveralyears,andprivatephilanthropythroughJMU’sDukeClubwillbe used to cover these costs annually over time.-ThedecisiontooffercostofattendanceforJMU’sbasketballteamsallowedheadcoachesLouis Rowe (men’s) andSean O’Regan (women’s) to begin those discussions with recruits during the current freshmen’s recruiting cycle.

CAA TEAMS WITH CBS SPORTS- In addition to numerous non-conference television appearances, the Colonial Athletic Association is teaming with CBS Sports Digital for a 12-game CAA Game of the Week package, which can be seen for free on CollegeSportsLive.com. All 10 teams will appear at least two times as part of the broadcast package. JMU will appear twice, once at home against William & Mary on Jan. 2 at 7 p.m., then again on Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. when it travels to Northeastern.- CBS Sports Network has expanded its coverage of the league’s showcase event, the 2018 CAA Men’s Basketball Champi-onship.Forthefirsttime,thenetworkwilltelevisebothsemifinalcontestsfromtheNorthCharlestonColiseumonMonday,March 5. That will set the stage for the CAA Men’s Basketball Championship game, which will air on CBS Sports Network for the second straight year at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6.- More than 50 games involving CAA men’s basketball teams will be broadcast on a variety of linear and digital platforms this season. Among the networks carrying CAA men’s basketball regular season games are CBS Sports Network, NESN, NBC Sports Washington/Philadelphia, the ACC Network, the Big Ten Network, the Pac 12 Network, the SEC Network, ESPNU and ESPN3.- In addition, CAA.TV provides free digital coverage of all CAA men’s basketball home contests throughout the season via tablets, phones and desktop computers. CAA.T V is available through a variety of custom OTT applications on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Android TV.
