A range hood is essential in any kitchen, but how to choose the right one for your home? Style, colour, and performance options are the obvious criteria, but homeowners should also ensure that their chosen model has been independently tested and certi ed.

It’s important that the range hood be a match for the size of the kitchen and type of stove. The fan must be powerful enough to renew the air of the kitchen approximately 10 times per hour, which is why you must know the size of the kitchen before choosing one.

Another factor to consider is that there should be at least a 20- to 24-inch clearance between the cooking surface and the lowest part of the hood. If your hood’s fan is powerful enough, it could be installed up to 30 inches from the cooking surface.

Hoods should be installed with a duct leading to the outside, preferably with a 3 1/4 inch-diameter metal pipe with smooth rather than undulating sides. If it isn’t possible to install an outdoor-evacuating range hood, there are models available with carbon lters. Never evacuate the air from a hood into an

attic, walls, garage, or crawl space, as the humidity and heat from the kitchen could damage the insulation or even the structure of the house.

Before making a nal choice, keep in mind that even though stainless steel range hoods are often the most eye-catching, they are also the most dif cult to maintain and clean — be sure to choose a hood that you will be able to care for easily and clean often.

The way you install a new hearth or woodstove varies greatly, depending on the model you choose. The installation of an electric replace is very simple, as it only needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet. An electric or ethanol replace does not require a chimney or a ventilation pipe, so some models can be af xed directly to the wall while others are portable and do not require any assembly.

Many safety regulations must be followed when putting in a wood replace, however. If your home already has a hearth and chimney, you can install a replace insert, but it must include a new, of cially approved stainless steel chimney lining. Ensure that your chimney is suited to the type of replace you want and that its installation meets building codes. If you have chosen an advanced combustion replace, be sure to hire a competent professional to install it.

A gas replace doesn’t require a chimney, just an evacuation pipe or duct. You will, however, need to replace the existing chimney lining with an approved metal duct. Insert models are simply placed in the opening of an existing replace. For those homes that do not have an existing replace, a zero

clearance replace can be installed on an interior or exterior wall with approved venting material. Again, a natural gas or propane replace should be installed by a home heating professional.

Wood pellet stoves require an evacuation pipe rather than a chimney, and a simple vent is suf cient for some models. It is always advisable to have this type of replace installed by a licensed contractor familiar with the procedure.
