The Mystery Lives On

Well I hope that everybody had a blessed Christmas/New Year celebration. The holidays are finally over as we transition back to our normal daily life; or liturgically, back to Ordinary Time. I al-ways find the Christmas season fascinating. For a lot of people, it is indeed the most wonderful time of the year. I myself love Christmas too. But as I mentioned in my Christmas sermon, this “joyful” sea-son can also be very depressing for certain people… Just two days before Christmas, I attended a funeral of a young man who grew up in my neighborhood in Vietnam. Since we came to this country, we only met each other a few times. A week before the funeral, I re-ceived a call from his mother about the tragic news. It happened that he went to the military for a few years, then came back and developed some type of severe depres-sion. Details of his death were not fully disclosed, but we believe he took his own life: at age 34. For that young man’s family, it will be very difficult to find another “joyful” Christmas. All this brings us back to the basic mystery of Christmas, which is also the central mystery of our Christian faith: the Incarnation. We believe that God has entered into human history and become human… not so much to take away our suffering, but to accompany us on our journey—one that can include both sorrow and joy. We believe in the mystery of Emmanuel, “God is with us,” (Mt 1:23). This is the mystery that definitively distinguishes Christianity from other major world religions. For example, within Islam, it is utterly inconceivable that God would lower himself and take on our hu-man nature… The Gospel reading for this second Sunday of Ordinary Time is taken from John 1:35-42. It tells us about the call of the first two disciples of Jesus. The Lord saw them and asked them: “What are you looking for?” That question seems like an ordinary one, but is actually very profound: what is the deepest longing of your heart? The disciples came and “stayed” with Jesus. In the Gospel of John, the verb “to stay” (or to remain, abide, or, dwell) has a certain theological connotation. It means to live with and in the Lord. Again, this is a reference to the mystery of the Incarnation. Only in Christianity can one find this intimate relationship between the believer and God… The “liturgical season” of Christmas is over, but the mystery of the Incarnation—the mystery of Emmanuel, “God is with us,”—continues on!

Up until now, our parish has had infant baptism EVERY month on Sundays at 2:15 pm: first Sunday (Vietnamese), second Sunday (English), third Sunday (Spanish). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION "Ordinary Time" began for us this week. On the old calendar, the feast of the Presentation, still more than two weeks away, was the last day of the Christmas season. Sadly, Bethlehem is hardly a place of peace on earth these days. The ancient Chris-tian community has been largely uprooted by political strife. The Church of the Nativity stands (barely) in remarkable disre-pair and disorder in Manger Square. The roof is crumbling, the major doorways are blocked, the wiring is faulty, and the wor-ship life is disrupted by quarrels among Eastern Christians. The church was founded by the Emperor Constantine in 325, destroyed in a Samaritan revolt in 539, and rebuilt by the Emper-or Justinian. When the area came under Muslim control in 638, the holiness of the church was respected, and in return Chris-tians allowed Muslims to pray in the south aisle, a right still upheld. Earlier in that century, invading Persians were ordered to destroy all churches, but when they saw the magi carved over the doorway of the Church of the Nativity, they spared it out of respect for their ancestors who bore gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the same city. The Crusaders restored and redecorated the church by the twelfth century, and it is their plan that survives. Down a few stone steps is a stone grotto with a silver star marking the place of Christ's birth: when the star was stolen in 1847 it triggered an international crisis that exploded into the Crimean War. Since 1852, the church has been shared by the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian Churches. The Greeks are in charge of the grotto, but don't enjoy the best of friendships with the Armenians. Catholics have the care of the Chapel of the Manger, and avoid the squabbles by a separate entrance to the Franciscan monastery church of St. Catherine. Pray for peace in Bethlehem! --Rev. 14/01/2018 Chúa Nhật tuần 2 Ga 1,35-42 Hãy đến mà xem

Người đáp: “Hãy đến mà xem.” Họ đã đến và xem chỗ Người ở, và ở lại với Người ngày hôm ấy, lúc đó độ chừng giờ thứ mười. (Ga 1,39)

Suy niệm: “Hãy đợi đấy” là bộ phim hoạt hình nổi tiếng của Nga vào đầu thập niên 80. Trong đó, thỏ con hiền lành, hào hiệp luôn luôn thắng thế, còn sói già dù xảo quyệt mưu mô, bày ra những chiêu trò mới lạ nhưng rốt cuộc vẫn phải nhận cái kết đắng và lại hẹn thỏ “Hãy đợi đấy” ở phần tiếp theo. Câu chuyện Tin Mừng hôm nay không phải là cuộc đối đầu không hồi kết như thế, mà là câu chuyện đầy cảm động của người theo đuổi Thầy Giê-su và mong biết “Thầy ở đâu” để rồi được Thầy Giê-su đón nhận và mời gọi: “Hãy đến mà xem.” Đến mà xem Thầy sống như thế nào. Đến mà xem Thầy cầu nguyện với Cha như thế nào. Đến mà xem Thầy yêu nhân loại như thế nào. Các ông không những đến xem mà còn ở lại bên Thầy suốt ngày hôm ấy. Ở lại để cùng ăn cùng uống với Thầy. Ở lại để cùng nghe cùng tâm sự với Thầy. Và ở lại một đêm để rồi ở lại bên Thầy mãi mãi.

Mời Bạn: Nếu hôm nay Chúa mời gọi bạn “Hãy đến mà xem,” bạn có sẵn sàng đáp lại, đến và ở lại với Ngài không? ĐHY Ph. Xav. Nguyễn Văn Thuận nhắn nhủ bạn đừng mải chọn công kia việc nọ để gọi là “chọn công việc của Chúa” mà trước hết hãy “chọn Chúa” và ở lại với Ngài là lẽ sống của đời mình.

Sống Lời Chúa: Dù bận rộn thế nào đi nữa, bạn hãy dành thời gian cầu nguyện với Chúa trước khi hành bất cứ điều gì. Cầu nguyện: Lạy Chúa, làm sao chúng con được bình an nếu cứ chọn những thứ khác ngoài Chúa. Xin giúp chúng con biết năng nhớ đến Chúa và chọn Chúa là lẽ sống đời chúng con. Amen.

Ngày 17/01: Thánh Antôn viện phụ, lễ nhớ Hôm nay Giáo Hội cho chúng ta mừng lễ kính thánh Antôn. Thánh Antôn hôm nay Giáo Hội mừng kính không phải là thánh Antôn Padua quen thuộc mà mọi người chúng ta kính mến. Antôn thành Padua hoặc Antôn thành Lisboa, sinh ngày 15 tháng 8 năm 1195 và qua đời ngày 13 tháng 6 năm 1231, là một linh mục Công giáo người Bồ Đào Nha và là tu sĩ Dòng Phanxicô. Còn thánh An-tôn chúng ta mừng kính hôm nay được gọi là thánh Antôn viện phụ sinh tại Cosma bên AiCập vào khoảng năm 250 và qua đời vào ngày 17/1/356. Được cha mẹ để lại cho một gia tài kếch xù, Antôn đã không nghĩ như người phú hộ trong Tin Mừng Luca. Ngài đã đi tìm ý Chúa và sau khi được Chúa soi sáng qua Lời Chúa trong Tin Mừng,

Antôn đã bán tất cả và cho đi tất cả không giữ lại cho mình cái gì. Rồi sau khi được soi sáng cũng qua Lời Chúa trong Tin Mừng Antôn đã bỏ tất cả và sống đời phó thác cho Chúa. Vâng ý Chúa, Ngài lập nhiều tu viện các cộng đồng tu hành và huấn dụ về đời sống thiêng liêng.Theo kinh nghiệm bản thân, Ngài bày tỏ cho các tu sĩ những mưu mô xảo quyệt của satan, chỉ cho họ những khí giới chiến đấu hữu hiệu hơn cả là cầu nguyện, ăn chay, làm dấu thánh giá và thái độ coi khinh chúng. Sống được 105 tuổi, thánh Antôn biết mình kiệt sức và giờ về thiên quốc sắp tới, Ngài liền hội các tu sinh lại quanh giường khuyên bảo họ lần sau cùng. Ngài cũng dậy các môn đệ đừng ướp xác và làm ma chay theo kiểu người Ai Cập. Sau cùng thánh nhân giơ tay chúc lành cho tất cả các thày và phó linh hồn trong tình yêu vô biên của Chúa. Hôm ấy là ngày 17.1.365. Năm 561, xác thánh nhân được cải táng trong nhà thờ kính thánh Gioan Tiền Hô tại Alexandria. Các Giáo Hội Trung Ðông đã sùng kính thánh Antôn đầu tiên, sau đó tràn qua Âu Châu và Giáo Hội đã chính thức tôn phong Ngài lên bậc hiển thánh.

CORDERO DE DIOS "Este es el Cordero de Dios". Escuchamos esta frase todos los domingos en la Misa pero es muy probable que muchos católicos no sepan quién la pronunció originariamente en la Biblia. La frase aparece en el Evangelio de Juan, en los labios de Juan Bautista a quien dice dos veces. En la lec-tura del Evangelio de hoy, Juan proclama que Jesús es el Cordero de Dios y entonces dos de los discípulos de Juan siguen a Cristo. Un poco más tarde Andrés, quien escuchó a Juan y siguió a Jesús, lleva a su hermano Simón para que reciba un nuevo nombre: Kefás, es decir Pedro. Si estudi-amos a fondo estos versículos de la Biblia vemos la misión de todos los bautizados en el Cuerpo de Cristo: Siempre debemos proclamar nuestra fe en Cristo, para que otros lo sigan. Quizás no sepamos de qué manera la voluntad de Dios obrará en los que llevamos a Cristo, pero eso no es lo importante. Lo que importa es que nuestra misión con-stante como Iglesia es llevar a otras personas a Cristo,el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Según una vieja costumbre latina, no se les debe llamar por nombre a los niños mientras todavía están en el vientre de su madre. Mis padres siempre me hablaban por nombre durante el embarazo de mi mamá.

Esto por supuesto molestaba a mi abuelita quien decía que si me iban a hablar por nombre sería mejor llamarme Ti-burcio. La gran sorpresa de mis padres fue que nací el día de san Tiburcio. Gracias a Dios mis padres no eran tradi-cionalitas, sino tuviera que pasar mi vida con ese nombre. Muchos latinoamericanos todavía siguen la tradición del onomástico; de dar a su hijo o hija el nombre del santo o de la santa en cuyo día nació. Esta costumbre se hace con do-ble intención: 1) para implorar la protección del santo so-bre el recién nacido y 2) para que el niño o la niña tenga un buen ejemplo como modelo para su vida. Esta última razón implica tener que conocer e imitar al santo o a la santa. Si tu hijo nace el 16 de enero puedes nombrarlo: Fulgencio, Acursio, Adiuto, Frisio y Tolomeo. Greetings, My name is Toney Renteria, I am the new Youth Minister here at St. Barbara. I come with over 10 years experience in youth ministry. I’ve served at two parishes during my time in ministry. I was the Confirmation Coordina-tor for 2 1/2 years at Visitation Parish in Westchester. Then I served as the Di-rector of Youth Ministry & Confirmation at St. Hilary Church of Perpetual Ado-ration for over five and a half years. I am excited to be able to share my gifts with the teens and community of St. Barbara. Youth Ministry has been a passion ever since my first experience in Youth Ministry. I was invited to a summer bomb fire by my youth minister, from their I was hooked. It was my youth minis-ter who made every youth night most memorable for me. From there, my pas-sion to serve the church in the capacity of Youth Ministry grew tremendously. Aside from ministry I find it good to balance my time with Sabbath days spend-ing it hanging out with friends and family and going to the movies and bowling every once in a while.
