Trevor Weflen literally stumbled across his ultra rare Canadian-only Expo 67 ESSO giveaway car.
The lifetime collector car enthusiast was checking out a classic Packard while surfing the net and impulsively clicked to see what else the St. Louis car dealer was selling. Up came something named the ‘70X.’
The car looked familiarly Canadian. A closer inspection of the highly unusual bronze-coloured 1960s car and some internet sleuthing convinced Weflen that he was looking at a 67 – X, one of four 1967 Oldsmobile Toronado cars radically altered by legendary California customizer George Barris to be offered as Expo 67 prize giveaways. Trevor Weflen bought the car and brought it back to Canada.
As Canada’s Centennial year approached, along with the opening of EXPO 67 in Montreal, excitement gripped the country. The Imperial Oil Company wanted to pump its Esso brand of gasoline during the World’s Fair. So the marketing department came up with an innovative prize program called the Esso Roadshow 67 game.
The company had four brand new

George Barris and his late brother Sam had earned international acclaim for building customized vehicles for famous people as well as film and TV productions. Among his best known creations are the Batmobile, Munster Koach and Drag-u-la.
The Toronado was the first front-wheel-drive American car built since the 1937 Cord. It was an ideal candidate for the Barris shop to cut through the middle and lengthen 38

Cast your vote and help local drag racer get to the winner’s circle for Champion video
By JEnnifER Blyth “Overjoyed.”After months of waiting, that’s
how local drag racer and motorsport enthusiast Peter Ash remembers feeling when he finally saw his 2009 Dodge Challenger Drag Pak #064 roll
Driver of the Week...
off the Coho ferry.Months in the making, it was only
“through dogged determination I managed to get one of only three Drag Pak cars that made it to Canadian soil,” Ash says, noting that only 100 of the cars were produced for distribution to recognized racers and were not for sale to the general public.
An application to purchase had to be submitted to Mopar Performance for approval prior to any sale. “At first no one believed I would get one of these extremely limited production factory race cars,” Ash says. “It shows that if you pursue your interests with focus and drive, you can achieve just about anything you set your sites on.
After completely disassembling the brand new car and reassembling it over 18 months to paint, install the roll cage, and other essentials, Ash managed a few test days at Port Alberni’s Thunder in the Valley event. The car is fast enough to require a Competition Drivers Licence, which Ash will test for this spring before any further events, however he says the car is comparable to the field at the U.S. Nationals held at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
“We are now ready for an assault on the N.H.R.A. Division 6 Stock Eliminator Class, and hopefully headed to the 2012 U.S Nationals,” says Ash, looking forward to a race series that will take him to Boise, Mission, Spokane, Seattle and Woodburn. He’s also looking to possible races in Las Vegas, Pomona, Ca., and Phoenix with hopes to land in the National Championships in Indianapolis in September.
Describing the Challenger as “a gentle giant that attracts admiration for its stunning, simple elegance,” as a driver, Ash appreciates its high horsepower, paired with exceptional mechanical components and workmanship.
In addition to the other work to get the vehicle track-ready, it was also adapted with hand controls for Ash, who is in a wheelchair.
“Even from a wheelchair, if you are always pursuing the best you can reach your goals with focus and determination,” he says.
In the meantime, Ash and his Challenger are entered in the Search for a Champion contest hosted by Champion Spark Plugs. Ash is hopeful local racing enthusiasts will visit, view his video, register and vote for the local entry, currently in the top 20 of this North-American-wide bid for a 2012 sponsorship.
Voting ends Jan. 31 – visit http://contest.alwaysachampion.com/contests/showentry/962002

centimeters to allow for a limo-sized rear passenger area to be built as a mobile family entertainment centre.
Barris discarded the front and rear sheet metal and designed swoopy fenders, adding length to the car with unique futuristic front and rear end treatments. The cars were painted a bright bronze with custom gold interiors. Inside was a unique curving nook-style rear seating with a TV in the centre. Up front were bucket seats with the passenger seat able to turn around to face the rear lounge.
The four completed customs became the Esso dream cars which were offered as prizes in the Esso summer safety roadshow during Expo 67. Motorists were invited to pick up a series of cards with safety tips. When they had collected five different safety tips, contestants had the “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to win one of four Roadshow 67 grand prizes – the fabulous Esso 67-X.
The first winner was a Mr. Hockett of Edmonton, who picked up his five winning tips on a journey from Vancouver to Edmonton during a family vacation. The second car was won by Vernon Scales of Okanagan Landing. The B.C. car soon went south of the border after being acquired by the Bellingham Lumber Company.
Longtime Vancouver-area residents might remember one of the four cars on display at Frank Baker’s Attic Restaurant in West Vancouver through the 1970s.
Trevor Weflen was told by the selling dealer in St. Louis that his car had been owned by a collector in Texas. It is believed there are only two of these cars left. One in very poor condition was offered for sale on eBay several years ago. It needed a complete restoration and, although it had a stated appraised value of $21,500, didn’t sell with a high bid of $7,701.
The 67 – X now owned by Trevor Weflen is in magnificent shape and only the interior needed replacing. Weflen, an experienced auto upholsterer, will do this work himself.
His Expo 67 giveaway car occupies a prominent spot in a showroom filled with collector cars at the family-owned business, Great Canadian Oil Change, headquartered alongside Highway 1 in Chilliwack.
It has been an interesting journey for Weflen, who built a Model T roadster into one of Saskatchewan’s first hot rods in 1955. He began his career in the Canadian Air Force as a metal technician building models and miniature prototypes. After leaving
his military job, he established a large manufacturing operation in Saskatoon where he designed and built custom motorcycles parts as well as custom extended front ends, seats and paint.
He became the go-to guy for custom auto upholstery and paint in Saskatchewan and owned many custom cars himself. He did his area’s first custom metal flake paint job and the first lace paint job.
Weflen branched out into the discount gasoline business in Saskatchewan and eventually settled on a company that would offer instant oil changes and other services in 1978. That company is now a franchise operation called Great Canadian Oil Change, with 51 stores from Ontario west. His wife, three sons and two daughters are all involved in the business.
He and his sons have built a significant collector vehicle collection over the years, which includes a 1967 Jaguar MKII saloon that has traveled just 19,940 miles (32,000 km). The car was purchased new from James Motors in Saskatoon by Weflen’s uncle who rarely drove it. The car is all original and in new condition.
There’s a red 1956 Ford pickup truck that Weflen upholstered in the 1970s and eventually acquired from the owner and drove to Chilliwack from Saskatoon.
He bought his dramatically-styled all red 1960 Dodge Polara D-500 locally in the Fraser Valley and restored it. The Dodge has many features, including swivel front bucket seats to allow for easy entry and exit along with a 383 cubic inch engine rated at 335 horsepower with its exotic dual cross ram carburetion setup.
But his flagship collector car is the 67-X. “I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to bring this important and historic car back to Canada,” he says. Earlier this year, he entered the car in a collector vehicle show at the Abbotsford Tradex Centre. The car’s builder, George Barris was the featured guest and he spent most of the show with the car he had designed and built 45 years ago.
Barris doesn’t know where the other three 67-X cars are. Nor does he know the whereabouts of a fifth car he built for himself from the original molds. He named that car the Centennial Golden Arrow Toronado and used it as a tow vehicle to take some of his other well known custom creations to car shows in that era.

Jenner celebrates conclusion of ‘re-build’
By JEnnifER Blyth
After a year of living “under construction,” the staff and customers of Jenner Chevrolet Corvette Buick GMC are celebrating the opening of their almost brand new sales and service centre.
Far more than a renovation, “we call it a re-build,” says general manager Fred Jenner, because other than the foundation and the mechanics’ bays, everything else is new.
One of the biggest changes for customers will be the drive-though service garage.
When bringing your vehicle in for servicing, simply pull up to the glass-fronted garage doors, which will open via sensor, then pull into the bay, where the service advisor will be waiting to check in your vehicle. Easy, efficient and no need to get out in the cold!
Service customers will enjoy a comfortable new lounge area up in the showroom – now with iPads to surf the web while you wait, in addition to the flat-screen TV and magazines. “It’s a little better atmosphere for the customers while they’re waiting for their vehicles,” Jenner says.
Other big changes include transforming the former waiting room and service counters into a spacious new parts department, now connected to the showroom and service department.
While many specifications for the refurbished dealership have come from GM – such as the
Community is invited to come check out the almost brand new Jenner Chevrolet Corvette Buick GMC
increased showroom space – the local dealership put a West Coast twist on the building with attractive rock work, cedar beams and other materials that tie the dealership to its setting and history.
Staff, from the mechanics to the salespeople, also enjoy more comfortable facilities and offices – a welcome reward for their patience during the
long renovation. “We really wanted to make it an environment people were comfortable working in, as well as being enjoyable for customers visiting,” Jenner says, adding, “they day we moved in, there was a loud cheer when the trailers left!
“I think everybody is looking at it now and trying to remember what it looked like before.”
Some of the many new sides to Jenner Chevrolet Corvette Buick GMC, from the larger showroom and customer lounge to the new parts department and drive-though service bays.

Green InitiativeNissan e-NV200 Concept to make national debut at the 2012 Canadian International Auto Show
Nissan will stage the Canadian debut of the e-NV200 Concept at the Canadian International Auto Show in February.
MEtRolanD MEDiaCaRguiDE MagazinE
Nissan Canada has announced the Canadian debut of the advanced, all-electric Nissan e-NV200 Concept will be held at the 2012 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.
The e-NV200 Concept points the way to one of several all-electric vehicles set to join the Nissan LEAF in dealerships in the coming years.
“Innovation is our guiding principle at Nissan and our two premieres at the 2012 Canadian International Auto Show represent our dedication to offer exciting and sustainable mobility options to all types of Canadian drivers,” said Judy Wheeler, Director of Marketing at Nissan Canada Inc. “With its standout design and ‘no gas, no tailpipe, no emissions’ powertrain, the e-NV200 Concept is set to revitalize the van segment,
while the latest modifications to Nissan’s legendary GT-R further pronounce that this sports car offers the best value in its class.”
In 2011, Nissan entered the commercial vehicle segment in Canada in a big way with the launch of the Nissan NV commercial van supported by a network of Nissan Commercial Vehicle dealers across the country.
The fully-electric Nissan e-NV200 Concept provides a glimpse into a near-future production version of the van designed to provide businesses with flexible, roomy interior space, while achieving a dramatic CO2 footprint reduction.
Based on the Nissan NV200 which was selected as New York City’s “Taxi of Tomorrow,” combined with the Nissan LEAF’s advanced, all-electric powertrain, the e-NV200 is positioned to shake up the segment when it goes into production in 2014.

Ford targets 30 per cent water reduction per vehicleFord enters 2012 with plans to
further reduce the amount of water used to make vehicles and continue showing efficiency is not only inherent in its vehicle lineup, but also in its manufacturing practices.
A new goal calls for Ford to cut the amount of water used to make each vehicle 30 per cent globally by 2015,
compared with the amount of water used per vehicle in 2009.
Ford is also developing year-over-year efficiency targets as part of its annual environmental business planning process and has established a cross-functional team spanning several divisions to review water usage more holistically.
Ford’s latest water reduction initiatives are designed to build on the success the company has had with its Global Water Management Initiative that launched in 2000. Between 2000 and 2010, Ford reduced its global water use by 62 per cent, or 10.5 billion gallons. That’s the equivalent of how much water 105,000
average American residences use annually, based on figures from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
If Ford meets its goal of reducing the amount of water used by 30 per cent between 2009 and 2015, the amount of water used to make a vehicle will have dropped from 9.5 cubic meters in 2000 to

2012 Vancouver Motorcycle Show rides into Tradex MEtRolanD MEDia
CaRguiDE MagazinE
The 2012 Vancouver Motorcycle Show returns to the TRADEX in Abbotsford this weekend with the newest models of bikes, the latest in performance and technology, and hundreds of add-ons and accessories.
The show opened yesterday and builds on last year’s numbers of almost 200 exhibitors and 35,000 visitors.
As one of the first motorcycle trade shows in Canada in 2012, the Vancouver Motorcycle Show is a choice showcase for manufacturers to unveil their newest models and latest performance updates. The 2012 Vancouver Motorcycle Show features the world’s leading distributors and manufacturers, including Yamaha, BMW, Kawasaki, Ducati, Honda, KTM, Suzuki, Harley-Davidson, Zero, and Polaris.
Theme nights throughout the show schedule include Rock, Roll & Race Nights on Friday and She Rides Nite especially for women on Saturday. Among the many features at this year’s show are Yamaha’s Kids’ Riding
Academy and Scooter School, the Westcoast Freestyle Stunt Show, KTM Enduro-X and an RCMP Skills Riding Demo.
Along with the vendor and manufacturer displays, the show features Custom Alley, Minibikes, an ATV Showcase, live music, rider presentations, contests, prizes and more.
The Vancouver Motorcycle Show is owned by the Motorcycle & Moped Industry Council and the Canadian Off-Highway Vehicle Distributors Council and is produced by Canadian National Sportsmen’s Shows, a non-profit corporation that is the largest producer of boat, fishing, sportsmen’s, ski, outdoor and motorcycle shows in Canada.
Through its family of shows, the corporation raises funds to ensure that generations of young Canadians can benefit from Canada’s outdoors.
Since the first show held in 1948, more than $30,000,000 has been committed to these causes.

approximately 3.5 cubic meters in 2015.
Leading by exampleProduction at Hermosillo Stamping
and Assembly Plant, in Mexico’s Sonoran Desert, doubled between
FOrd Continued from Pg. B102000 and 2010. However, water usage at theplant dropped during the same period by 40 per cent. A membrane biological reactor – a biological water treatment system – was installed to make up to 65 per cent of the plant’s wastewater suitable for high-quality reuse elsewhere in the facility or for
irrigation. Another approach is to cut the
amount of water necessary to complete a task – a strategy afforded by the use of advanced technologies and processes.
For example, several of Ford’s engine plants around the world are using Minimum Quantity Lubrication
machining, also known as dry-machining. This technology lubricates the cutting tool with a very small amount of oil sprayed directly on the tip in a finely atomized mist, instead of with a large quantity of coolant/water mixture.

Camaro ZL1 by the numbers:
3.9Seconds•297km/h•$58,000•
MEtRolanD MEDiaCaRguiDE MagazinE
The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe accelerates from 0-96 km/h in 3.9 seconds and can reach a top speed of 297 km/h.
Starting at (Cdn) $58,000, including Performance Traction Management and Magnetic Ride suspension, the ZL1 delivers supercar levels of performance and technology for the price of a sports car.
The heart of the Camaro ZL1 is a supercharged 6.2-litre engine SAE-rated at 580 hp and 556 lb/ft of torque, making it the most-powerful production Camaro ever.
The ZL1 also features a standard dual-mode exhaust system, with vacuum-actuated valves in the exhaust pipes for a refined exhaust note at low speeds as well as a free-flowing system for peak performance.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
“With 0-96 km/h taking less than four seconds, and a top speed in excess of 297 km/h, the power and acceleration of the Camaro ZL1 rivals many supercars,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer.
“And, horsepower is only half of the story, as the most significant measurement of the ZL1’s potential is lapping the Nurburgring in 7:41.27.
“That is a great testament to the power, braking, grip, and balance of the Camaro ZL1, and to the well-rounded performance of the ZL1 that sets the bar for the sports-car segment.”
The potent Chevrolet Camaro is capable of 297 km/h with a 0-60 mph time of less that four seconds
All-new 2013 Dodge Dart Interior sets new standard for compact cars
MEtRolanD MEDiaCaRguiDE MagazinE
The Dodge brand is giving a sneak peek into the high-tech, precisely crafted and highly customizable interior of its all-new 2013 Dodge Dart.
Recently introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the new Dodge Dart’s interior sets a new standard for compact cars.
Starting with modern Dodge DNA and through the use of innovative ambient interior lighting, high-quality soft-touch materials and high-tech features, the 2013 Dodge Dart is loaded with cool amenities and unexpected delights for both drivers and passengers.
The Dart’s “driver-centric” layout is designed to put all controls within easy reach of the driver.
The high-tech centerpiece of the all-new 2013 Dodge Dart is the class-exclusive floating island bezel, which houses the segment-exclusive available seven-inch Thin Film Transistor customizable gauge cluster display with light pipe surround. There’s also an available class-exclusive Uconnect Touch 8.4-inch touchscreen multimedia centre the largest touch-screen in its class.
Thoughtful storage options throughout fit today’s technology. The glove box easily conceals a stowed iPad; the centre console features auxiliary jacks to plug in a wide variety of electronic devices, and thoughtful, inventive storage solutions, such as console map pockets, which are perfect for storing mobile phones, receipts, or pen and paper.
Lighting in all the right places provides drivers and passengers a warm, comfortable cockpit.
The interior of the 2013 Dodge Dart uses innovative ambient interior lighting, high-quality soft-touch materials and high-tech features.

Hands-free use of your smart phone just got a little easier with Griffin Technology’s new release of travel gear for 2012.
WindowSeat 3 HandsFree is a windshield/dashboard mount for smartphones. Designed for car stereos that have AUX-in jacks, this WindowSeat comes with an AUX cable and mic that can be used to make handsfree phone calls and stream music/navigation commands through the car speakers.
A 3-point adjustable mounting bracket securely grips all types of smartphones (even accommodating bulky cases), with rubber cushions that hold the phone in its cradle. A heavy-duty lever-action suction cup grips to the windshield or dash, and a friction-lock ball joint securely positions the device at eye level for safe, easy reference to street maps, directions and other content. The included auxiliary audio cable connects to the car stereo’s AUX input, streaming music, turn-by-turn navigation, and even handsfree phone calls, all through the car speakers. WindowSeat 3 HandsFree is constructed of materials that withstand variations in temperature and complement the vehicle’s interior.
For cars without AUX-in-equipped stereos, the AirCurve Window Mount combines the best features of two of Griffn’s most popular standalone devices: the AirCurve acoustic amplifier for iPhone, and their car Window Mount cradle. The AirCurve Window Mount adheres to glass or dashboard using the included swivel mounting base. AirCurve works like an acoustic megaphone for iPhone 4/4S, amplifying its built-in speakers by as much as 25 decibels. Users can carry on conversations in hands-free speakerphone mode while driving. AirCurve’s cleverly engineered waveguide does it all without batteries or cables.

Kick off the Year of the Dragon with
a bang next weekend when Chinese New Year celebra-tions fill the streets of Victo-ria’s historic Chinatown.
While the Chinese New Year celebration begins Jan. 23 this year, the local festivities get under way at noon on Sun-day, Jan. 29. Head to Fisgard Street, near the Gate of Har-monious Interest, to see stu-dents performing the colourful Lion and Dragon dances, kung fu demonstrations and more, says Kileasa Wong, principal of the Victoria Chinese Public School.
“It’s like a festival,” Wong says, adding that with this year marking the Year of the Dragon, associated with good fortune, expect a little extra celebration.
The longest and most sig-nificant holiday of the Chinese calendar, Chinese New Year offers plenty of opportuni-ties to celebrate over its two weeks. Those born in the Year of the Dragon – one of 12 ani-mal symbols associated with the Chinese zodiac – are said to be energetic, fearless, warm-hearted and charismatic.
