Message from the PresidentIt has been an honour to be elected as President of the HKROA -- an honour but also a challenge, as the avenue of success paved by past Presidents and Council Members has to be followed, and also we have to navigate unchartered territories in the world of racing for our close to 800 members.
We will have plenty of activities ahead which hopefully should suit Members of all generations. Our idea is to get your whole family involved.
From this edition onwards, on top of reporting 'past performances', our Gazette will also alert you to upcoming events so that you can mark your diary to participate. Also we welcome constructive opinions from you -- we are here to serve!
The Chinese New Year is fast approaching. On behalf of our Council, let me wish you all a very prosperous Year of the Ram!
The Annual General Meeting of HKROA was successfully held on 28 November 2014 at Happy Valley Stand of the Happy Valley Racecourse, and the new Council for the year 2014/2015 was elected.
Mr. Apollo Ng was elected as the new President and seven other Officers were also elected by the Council at the first Council Meeting immediately held after the Annual General Meeting.
Mr. Ng made good use of "We are Here To Serve" as a new mission statement for the development of the Association's activities. The new Council will follow the tradition of effective communications with The Hong Kong Jockey Club and organize more activities as to strive for the benefits of fellow Members. On top of this, overseas visits, increasing Members' benefits through the use of membership card and more fundraising events for the HKROA Charitable Foundation are all in the activities agenda of the new Council.
Mr. Chew Fook Aun joined the Hong Kong Jockey Club as a Racing Member on 1 April 1998 and became a Full member on 1 July 2001.
He currently owns two horses under his own name, namely, P J Hall and Penang Hall. He is also a syndicate member of the Hong Kong Racehorse Owners Association (HKROA) Syndicate, the Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC) Syndicate as well as the Right Track Syndicate. The HKFC Syndicate currently has a horse named Secret Identity. Other horses owned by this Syndicate in the past in which he had co-ownership were Rock-a-lot and Fast-a-lot. Through the Right Track Syndicate, he had also previously co-owned horses such as Right Frarr, Right Timing and Goal Post.
In addition to horse racing, he swims and plays squash in his leisure time and together with his wife, they are active supporters of charities such as the Child Development Centre which is chaired by his wife.
He is currently the Deputy Chairman of Lai Sun Group which is a property development, property investment, media and entertainment group.
Mr. Chew considers it an honour to be elected as a Council Member of the HKROA. He hopes to contribute to the HKROA through active service on the Council and its committees with the aim to help to enlarge the membership of the HKROA as well as bring more activities to the members both socially as well as through equestrian activities.
Mr. Ronald Y.C. Lo has been a racing fanatic since he was a teenager. He feels extremely honoured to be elected as a Council Member of the HKROA and given the chance to serve the Association and Members. Mr. Lo aims to assist in promoting the image of the HKJC and the HKROA, to influence young generation the joy of horse racing and to recruit more HKJC Owners to become a part of the HKROA family.
Mr. Lo was the Owner of "Grand Cru" of Lucky 13 Syndicate. Currently he owns three horses which includes "Principal" of DTFU Syndicate, "Cosmic Boom" and "Rouge et Blanc" under his sole name.
Mr. Lo is currently running a media and entertainment group that based in Hong Kong, specializes in creating media and entertainment brands from ground up, scope of businesses includes out-of-home media, media planning, event productions, design services, promotion of international artists and management of international entertainment brands across Asia.
With the longstanding relationship with the renowned Swiss Watchmaking and Jewellery, Piaget, which has supported The Hong Kong Racehorse Owners Association (HKROA) for years, an exclusive event Christmas Shopping for a Cause Cocktail for our Members was held at the Piaget Flagship Boutique at Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong on 16 December 2014.
Members and friends were able to view all the latest watches and jewellery creations by Piaget and they also enjoyed a privilege of exceptional discount on any purchase during the cocktail. To make this further a meaningful act, Piaget will donate a percentage of sales made on the night to The Hong Kong Racehorse Owners Association Charitable Foundation.
The HKROA would like to again express its sincere gratitude for the generosity of Piaget in organizing this wonderful event and thanks every member and their guests' participation.
HKROA Members and family members are cordially invited to join us for an exciting 4 days 3 nights summer racing trip in Sydney, Australia from 6 February to 10 February 2015, where we can witness the running of the HKROA Trophy hosted by the Australian Turf Club at the picturesque setting of Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, together with attending the Sydney Classic Yearling Sale (Summer Book) at Newmarket Complex. This is the yearling sale where our Champion racehorse "Silent Witness" was sold for only A$55,000 and the average price of the sale last year was a mere A$34,719. Another highlight of the trip is to visit the HKROA Syndicate's 3yo horse at his training stable in Sydney. Auction house William Inglis and Son Ltd has extended their kind invitation to those participating HKROA Members in providing hotel accommodation, land transport, lunch at races and sales, together with an inward buyer scheme for purchasers meeting with their sales terms and conditions.

Over the past years, the HKROA has been a great supporter to the development of the apprentice jockeys of Hong Kong. Last year, the HKROA Charitable Foundation ("the Foundation") has made a donation to the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled ("HKPC&SAPD") by supporting the Apprentice Jockeys' School ("AJS") team to participate in the "Run for Paralympians", a 10K event of the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon. The Team HKROA/AJS first time joined hands in the event in 2014 has won the Champion trophy of the Run for Paralympians Cup, in addition, two Trainees of the AJS have held the record of the Run for Paralympians Cup.
The "Run for Paralympians" event is organized by the HKPC&SAPD with its aim to raise funds to support HKSAR delegation to take part in the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
The Board of Directors of the Foundation has passed to again make a donation to support this event which will be held on 25 January 2015. Moreover, two Directors of the Foundation will join the Team HKROA/AJS for the Run.
The Foundation is pleased to support the young racing trainees the opportunity of promoting the development of sports for the physically disabled in Hong Kong and helping the athletes to achieve their Paralympic goals. We wish the event a great success!
