Some expected and some not. One of the changes is the addition of a new board member. Scott Kirkland is a great addition to our board. For those of you who don’t know Scott, he is an avid aviator, a partner in a Cirrus and all around good guy. He is eager to serve and will listen to anything that you have to say. While we are on the subject of change, I’m sure everyone knows that N733NB has been offline for most of December. I wish there was an easier way to do it but we had to get this done before January 18. When it comes back online, it will have a Garmin GNS-430W, Garmin GTX 345 Transponder/ADSB In/Out and a Garmin Flightstream. The Flightstream allows you to plan your flight on your iPad in ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot, file it and when you get to the airplane, push the whole flight plan to the GNS-430W. If you need to make a change to your flight plan on the 430, you can push the changes back to your iPad. We have another GTX 345 and Flightstream on order for sometime in 2017. Be on the lookout for a lot of good changes to our fleet in the coming year. We have many plans for aircraft. We are aggressively looking for another aircraft so if you have any leads, please let one of the board members know. Thank you for an incredible year of flying. We flew over 2550 hours last year which is the most hours I could find in the records available to us. We couldn't have done this without the amazing members that have chosen us for their flying needs. Thank you for a great 2016 and here's to an even better 2017. Greetings Fellow Aviators,

This new year is bringing in a lot of changes.

AOPA - Advocating for General Aviationby Charles Galles

The club had another great meeting in January when Pat Brown flew up to talk to the club about AOPA’s advocacy work for pilots like us and the future of general aviation. Over 30 members and at least 4 planes attended Pat’s presentation. Pat is one of AOPA’s “You Can Fly” ambassadors and is also a well known speaker at aviation seminars. Pat has been flying since he was 17 and is now a Gold Seal flight instructor for gliders, and single and multi-engine aircraft with over 6000 hours of instruction given. As an ardent GA safety advocate, Pat co-developed AOPA’s “Rusty Pilots” seminar program and frequently gives Air Safety Institute presentations.

You Can FlyAOPA’s “You Can Fly” program is a strategic effort to reverse the trend of a declining pilot population. Having flown as a pilot and then as an instructor for so many years, Pat has seen first hand the changes in the pilot community over time. In a 2011 study of the health of the GA community the AOPA found that more than 80% of student pilots never complete their training. We all know of the soaring (no pun) cost of keeping our planes fueled and flying. “You Can Fly” supports GA on four pillars:1. High School aviation programs - the current GA pilot

community is aging and new younger pilots are going to be needed to keep it going. AOPA works with high schools to establish and promote an early interest and access to aviation

2. Flight Training - with regard to the reasons for the 80% dropout rate among student pilots. Financial concerns were only #4 on the list. The top reasons were finding good flight instructors and quality flight schools. Our club is very fortunate to have a diverse group of passionate, experienced instructors. AOPA’s initiative provides recognition of excellence in instructors and schools as seen through the eyes of their students.

3. Flying clubs - the cost of ownership of an airplane is only one entry barrier to flying. Airplanes are complex, temperamental, and needy machines. Flying clubs let pilots pool their resources, knowledge, and experience in keeping planes flying. In 2016 AOPA helped start 25 new flying clubs.

4. Rusty pilots - many pilots hit rough patches in life - health, money, time, whatever. Flying becomes something they once did. Pat is most proud of helping develop the Rusty Pilots seminar to bring pilots back into aviation. The Rusty Pilots program has been given over 156 times and over 40% of those attending have completed flight reviews to get back in the air!

AdvocacyAOPA has many other programs for pilots as well. In the legal advocacy area, AOPA was a key player in achieving the new “Basic Med” program that takes effect May 1. Ongoing legal issues include user fees for GA and no-lead AvGas. One initiative in particular to encourage the use of non-TSO’ed equipment in GA aircraft may benefit our club: In 2016 Garmin received FAA approval for the G5 electronic attitude indicator. With a cost of about $2k an aircraft can be equipped with an IFR certified backup attitude indicator. These types of upgrades are among the options our board has been considering as we work to renew our fleet.

GA CommunityIn an effort to bring AOPA to you and to draw the community together, AOPA is continuing fly-in events in 2017. On Sept 8-9 they will be in Norman, OK, just about 1.5 tach hours away from us. It might be a great way for our club to participate in an organization that does so much for us.

A big thank you to Pat for coming out on a cold and dreary weekend to talk to us!

Want to hear more from Pat? He is going to be presenting a safety seminar: “Non-towered Case Studies” at 7pm on Feb 1, 2017 at the Addison Conference center. This topic is of special interest to our club given the recent tragedy at McKinney aero-country airport. No registration required.
