The Golden Age — The Jews in Spain
The years either side of 1000 CE were the golden age of the Jews in Spain.
Co-existing happily with the country’s Islamic rulers the Jews developed a flourishing study of Science, Hebrew literature and the Talmud.
Despite an attempt to forcibly convert all Jews to Islam in 1086 CE, this golden age continued.
At around this time the first Jews are recorded in Britain.

Diaspora of the Israelites
Umar CaliphCaliph Mu’awiyah: First of the Umayyad DynastyFollowing the brutal murder of Caliph Umar and his successor Uthman, the Muslim world was plunged into massive civil war. After one of the bloodiest battles in Muslim history, the reigning caliph that emerged was Mu’awiyah, a controversial figure in Islam even to this day. And with Caliph Mu’awiyah, the Umayyad Dynasty began, signifying a period of drastic changes in Jerusalem.
When Caliph Umar was reigning in Jerusalem in the mid-seventh century, the city was called Bayt al-Maqdis—venerated most of all as the seat of Solomon’s temple—and its Muslim presence was not yet established.
All this would change with the rise of Mu’awiyah and the Umayyad Dynasty. It was the descendants of Mu’awiyah who built a palace on the Temple Mount, Al Aqsa mosque, and finally the exquisite Dome of the Rock.
