Following feedback received from members, this year’s meet was changed to a 1-day event to encourage greater participation from our hotel members. In addition, the scoring format of the annual meet was revised whereby participating hotels were grouped in the following categories and graded accordingly: Less than 299 rooms Between 300-600 rooms More than 600 rooms This year’s Meet saw a total of 20 teams competing in the various track and field events. Undeterred by the thunderstorm which took place halfway through the Meet, the supporters remained high-spirited and cheered their team mates on in the events. SHA Inter-Hotel Athletic Meet 2015

The34thSHAInter-HotelAthleticMeet2015was held on 16 May 2015 at the Yio ChuKangStadium.

Followingfeedbackreceivedfrommembers,this year’s meet was changed to a 1-dayeventtoencouragegreaterparticipationfromourhotelmembers.

The beating of drums intensified andloud cheers soared through as defendingChampion, Resorts World Sentosa (RWS)wascrownedtheChampionofthe33rdSHAInter-HotelSoccerLeague2015withafinalscoreof4-nilattheir1st/2ndplacingmatchagainstMarinaMandarinSingapore.

The3rd/4thplacingmatchwhichtookplaceearlier during the Finals saw old-timers -ConradCentennialSingaporeandRCHotels(Pte) Ltd pitting against each other. At theblowofthefinalwhistle,thegamerecordedwith a score of 3 - 4, RCHotels (Pte) Ltd,successfully clinched the 3rd spot at themuch anticipated annual SHA Inter-HotelSoccerLeague.

Your Say: Enhancing Singapore’s Attractiveness as a tourist destination

ThetourismsectorinSingaporeisonewhichhasalwaysseenahealthygrowthforSingaporeanditseconomy.STBhasworkedhardandhasbeenspot-onthusfar,intappingSingapore’sresources,curatingplacesofinterests,andgrowingSingaporeasavibrantinternationalandglobaltouristdestination.

TransformativechangeiskeyifSingaporeistocontinueitsholdintheregionasametropolisthatkeepspacewiththeevolvingtrendsandthirstsoftoday’stourismindustry.Inthepast,travellerswerecontentedwith

run-of-the-millofferings.Today’sgenerationoftravellersareseekingandyearningmore.Whileiconiclandmarks(hardware)suchtheMerlion,MarinaBaySands,Sentosa,thenewlyaddedGardensbytheBayandourrecentpride-theBotanicalGardens,nowdeclaredasaWorldHeritage,willcontinuetobeimportantinSingapore’sofferings,Singaporewillneedtolooktowardsamalgamatingthese“hardware”withinnovativesoftware(technology)andthemostbasicandimportantsoftskillsets–friendly,gracious,sincere,hospitableservices–tomeetthenextdecadeoftravellerswhowillwanttravelexperiencesthataremoremulti-dimensional–allowingthemtoshareinstantaneously,learn-on-the-go,improvetheirskills(onbusinessandsociallevels),meetnewpeople–i.e.combinetravelwiththeirinterests. 

Singapore touristhighlightsshouldgobeyondofferingsof family funso thatour touristattractions for thenextdecade isabalancedkaleidoscopeofanenrichingandrichartscene,afoodhavenofferingthe‘bestof’;aleaderandatrend-setterofsmartopportunitiesforthetourismmarketsinbothleisureandMICE.

In this issue, we have invited our members to share their suggestions or ideas on how Singapore can further enhance its attractiveness as a tourist destination for both the leisure and business markets, and hence increase visitor arrivals.

Singaporehasmadegreatstridesintourismoverthelast10years–throughworld-classeventssuchasWTAChampionshipsandiconicattractionslikeMarinaBaySands.Lookingahead,IfeelSingaporeneedstofocusondevelopingtalentandincreasingefficiencywhilecontinuallyreinventingthedestination.

Talentdevelopmentneedstobeakeyfocusforusaswemoveforward.Identifying,groominganddevelopingthenextgenerationofhospitalityleadersandtalenttorunourworld-classinfrastructureiscriticalforSingapore

tostayaheadofthegame.  Howdowedothat? Weoffermentorshipopportunitieswithleadingbrandssothatlocalscanworkwiththebestintheindustry.Companieswillneedtoinvestincontinuousretrainingsothatexistingstaffcanrecognizethatthehospitalitysectoroffersgoodlong-termcareers.Atthesametime,weneedtoworkhand-in-handwithschoolsandinstitutionstoincubateandnurtureyoungprofessionals.

Wemustalsokeep lookingatways toworksmarter to improvebothefficiencyandservice,whether it’s through leveragingtechnologyorrefiningprocesses.Finally,asadestination,wehavetokeepreinventingandimprovingourselves. Thisisnotjustintermsofcapitalinfrastructure,butalsotakingourfestivalsandeventstoanevenhigherlevelandinitiatingnewreasonsforpeopletovisitSingapore.

Overthelast50years,Singaporehasbecomeahighlydesirabledestinationwithworld-classfacilitiesandevents. However, as consumers’ tastes change, as attractions age, new destinations emerge, existingdestinationswillneedtobecomemorecompetitive.Weneedtostepupourgametoconsistentlyprovidememorableanduniqueexperiencesforvisitors,sothattheywouldcomeback,timeaftertime.

Firstofall,weneedtomaintainexistinginfrastructureswelltoensuretheattractionsstayrelevant.SingaporealreadyhasastrongtourisminfrastructurewithworldclassattractionslikeGardensbytheBay,RiverSafari,thesoon-to-openNationalGalleryandtheSingaporeBotanicGardens,recentlynamedanUNESCOWorldHeritageSite–aprestigioustitlethataddsanewgreenangletotheSingaporetourismexperience.Atthesametime,wemustcontinuetohaveasteadypipelineofnewattractionstomaintainSingapore’sattractivenessasacompellingdestination.

Ourhardwareneeds tobecomplementedwithgoodsoftware,withdifferentiatedeventsandunforgettableexperiences thatwillmeet theneedsof increasinglysophisticated travellers.HistoricprecinctssuchasChinatown,KampongGlamandLittleIndiaallowsvisitorsaglimpseintothehistoryofSingapore;theycouldalsobefurtherleveragedontoprovideuniqueculturalexperiencestovisitorsaswell.

Lastly,tobringtheSingaporeexperiencetolife,weneedourpeopletocontinuetodeliverengagingandthoughtfulservices.Thiscanbedonethroughrecognitionprogrammes,trainingsandmysteryshopping,toensureserviceexcellencethroughouttheindustry.

Singapore’spushtoincreaseitsappealtoawiderrangeoftourismsegmentsiswithoutadoubtaworld-classeffort.TooutpaceotherkeycitiesintheAsiaPacific,however,Singaporemustbeabletoprovidevisitorswithanoutstandingandcontinuouslyimprovingcustomerserviceexperience.Thislevelofservicecanonlybeprovidedbyengagedcolleagueswhoareexcitedtobeapartofthehospitalityandserviceindustries.Withover100vacantpositionsatourhotel,unfilledduetothelaborcrunch,itisverychallengingtomeetandexceedthelevelofserviceexpectedbyourcustomers.

When consideringwhatmakes a destination attractive to visitors, be it leisure or corporate, there are anumberoffactorstoconsider.Theseinclude,butarenotlimitedto;cost/relativevalue,accessibility(airline/airportinfrastructure),qualityanddiversityofhospitalityproductsandofcourse;thequalityofserviceinthatdestination.

LookingatSingaporespecifically,onewouldbelievethatSingaporeiswellpositionedtocontinueitsleadingroleintheregionfortourismandtravel.Howeverweareallpainfullyawarethesinglebiggestthreatfacingtheserviceindustry,isthecurrentlackofmanpowerbroughtonbytherestrictionsinforeignlabour.Thisplacesfurtherstressonthoseleftintheoperation,andhasledmanyemployeestoeither“jobhop”insearchofabetterenvironment,orleavetheindustryaltogether.

Thereareanumberofstepsthatcouldandperhaps,shouldbetakentoensurethatservice levelsremainhighandthatthecountrycontinuestoupholditsstandingasoneoftheleadingdestinationsintheregion.Mythoughtsonthiscanbedividedintotwoareas;ProductivityandTalentBasedSelection.

Productivity:

Therehasbeenalotoftalkaboutthis,butIbelievewithoutsomeformofgovernmentorindustrymandate,therewillbenosignificantbreakthrough in thisarea.Having facedsimilarcircumstanceswith labourduringmytimeasanExecutiveHousekeeper in theUnitedStates,where there is analmost identicaldynamicwithhigh labourcost and limitedsupplyofwilling labour toclean rooms, thecompany Iworked forat that timeengagedanorganizationcalledCarpedia.Theirintentwasto identifyprocess improvementsthatcouldbemadeasaresultofconductingobservationsoverasixweekperiodofhowworkwasdoneandidentifyinglosttimeopportunities.Theselosttimeopportunitiesbecamethebasisforrecommendationstocompresstheexistingprocessandreducethemanhoursrequiredtocleanaroom.Thereductionwastranslatedintoarequiredtargetofhoursperoccupiedroomtoachieve,whilestillmaintainingthequalitylevels.TheresultswerereviewedweeklyandmeasuredagainstthetargetwithboththehotelteamandCarpedia.Oneofthemanyreasonsthisapproachwassuccessful,isthatthisorganizationactedasan“externalirritant”toensurethatthehotelremainsontrackwiththeprojecttimelineandtargetsset.

IbelievethattheSingaporeGovernmentcouldengagesuchanorganizationandmandateasimilarapproachacrosstheindustry.Indoingso,therewouldneedtobearealisticapproachandonlyhaveahotelengageinsuchaproject inonedepartmentatatime, soasnottoplacetoomuchstressontheoverallhoteloperations.

Talent based selection:

Giventhecurrentshortageoflabour,theserviceindustryhasbecomelessselectiveandthereisanattitudeof“Goodisgoodenough”.Thechallengewiththisisthatwearenotselectingindividualsbasedontheirnaturaltalentsandabilitiesandweruntheriskofhavingpeopleinarolethatdoesnotsuitthem.Theconsequencesofthisare;increasedturnover,areductioninemployeemoraleandreducedservicelevels. Theequationwhichwasoncesharedwithmecomestomind;itisGIFTbackwards:

Thebottom line is that the raw ingredient foranyemployee isbasic talent. Inorder toachieve this thereneeds tobeacommitmentfromtheindustrytoselectaccordingly.

Ibelievethatiftheabovetwomentionedareascanbeaddressedacrosstheboard,thenwecancontinuetopositionourselvesasaleadingserviceproviderwithintheregion,butthiswillinvolvechangefromhowwecurrentlyoperate.Onthisnote,IwouldleaveuswiththewordsoftheformerChiefofStaffoftheU.S.Army;GeneralEricShinseki;“Ifyoudonotlikechange,youwilllikeirrelevanceevenless.”

As we gather here this morning tomourn the passing of our belovedfoundingPrimeMinister,MrLeeKuanYew,WeareremindedofhisgreatloveforanddevotiontoSingapore.

Althoughweareasmallnationwithhardlyanyresourcesbutourpeople,wehavecomealongway.TodaySingaporestandstallontheglobalstagebecauseofhisboldvisionandcommitmenttomakeSingaporeasuccessstory.Forthisremarkableachievement,hededicatedhis lifetoensuringthatnooneisleftbehindandthatthecountryprospersandcontinuestodoso.

1) What is your most memorable experience whilst as a student at SHATEC?

SHATEC has provided me with an enriching learningjourneyandsparkedmyinterestinthehospitalityindustry.

We were once assessed for a particular RestaurantServiceSkillmodule,basedonourserviceandproductknowledge.For thisgradedassignment,our familyandfriendswerespeciallyinvitedtoparticipateasguestsatthe restaurant, whilewe performed our duties. Despitefeeling apprehensive, I overcame the anxiety and evenachievedafavourablegrading.ItwascertainlyarewardingexperienceasIhadthechancetodelivermybesttothe“guests”, and what made it even more gratifying wasreceivingtheirpraises.

3) What is your advice to current SHATEC students on how to be successful in the hospitality industry?

Instillingpassionandhavingacontinuousdrivetolearnisessentialwithinthedynamichospitalityindustry.Alwaysseektogainknowledge,both insideandoutsideof theclassroom.Nevermissanopportunity to learnsomethingnew,aslearningisalifelongprocess.

Beinganefficientteamplayerisalsocrucialinthisfast-pacedandpeople-orientedindustry.Bereadytostepoutofyourprimarydutiestorenderassistancetocolleaguesandguests.Youreffortswillberewarded!

2) Share with us your success story and how SHATEC has played a part in your career development through the years.

The real-life exposures which providedme with an in-depth understanding of the situations that I may befacedwithinahospitalitycareerwere indeedextremelybeneficial.Theysetastrongfoundationformetopreparemyselfforallaspectsoftheindustry,andalsotrainedmetohandlesituationseffectively.

I enjoyed the curriculum especially the experientiallearning component experienced during the 2.5 yearsthatiwaswithSHATEC.Iwasequippedwithadepthofknowledgeandexperience throughhands-onexposuresuch as training modules for operational managementanda6-monthindustrialattachmentprogramme,whichopenedthedoorstomanyopportunitiesandguidedmycareerpath.

Singapore, 27 May 2015 – The Singapore Tourism Board(STB)unveilstodaythearrayofspecialdealsandexperiencesunder the Golden Jubilee campaign. More than 40 tourismstakeholders have come together to offer these deals andexperiences as part of a $20 million marketing outreach insevenkeymarkets.  

“2015 is not only a tremendous milestone for Singapore,butalsoanopportunityforSTBto leveragethe internationalattention to ramp up marketing efforts for destinationSingapore,”saidMsLynettePang,AssistantChiefExecutiveofSTB’sMarketingGroup.“Weinvitedthetourismindustrytopartnerusonthisopportunity,andtheresponsefromacrossthevarioustourismindustrieshasbeenheartening.” 

From May to December 2015, visitors will be able tochoose froma rangeofattractiveairfares,hotelstays, retailexperiences, dining deals, and admissions to attractions.More than35hotelshavecomeonboard tooffer two-nightpackageswith a third night free (for bookings up to end ofAugust2015).Under“KidsPlayforFree”,childrenenjoyfreeadmissionintoparticipatingattractions(termsandconditionsapply).

Innovative local brands such as Supermama and LOVESG are offering specially-designed SG50 collectibles thatreflectSingapore’sculture,andserveasuniquesouvenirsofSingapore. 

During the Great Singapore Sale, tourists who spend aminimumof$50willgetachancetowin$500intheformofaMasterCard pre-paid card, with onewinner daily. Visitorscan also enjoy hassle-free shopping, airport transfers, hoteldelivery, personal shopping services and more at some ofSingapore’sshoppingmallsanddepartmentstores.  

Beyond the myriad deals, visitors will also be able toexperience events such as Pedestrian Night. The popularPedestrianNightonOrchardRoadwillreturnforasecondrunfromJulytoDecemberthisyeartoaddbuzztoSingapore’siconic shopping belt. In addition to entertainment-themedactivitiesonthepedestrianisedroadeveryfirstSaturdayofthemonth,visitorscanlookforwardtoin-mallorin-storeeventsorganised by Orchard Road stakeholders. Extended validity of Multiple Journey Visa will help attract more visitors to Singapore

Singapore, 15 May 2015 – The Singapore Tourism Board(STB) welcomes the announcement by the Immigration &CheckpointsAuthority (ICA) todayofvisameasures thatwillextendthevalidityofMultipleJourneyVisas(MJVs)issuedtonationalsfromthePeople’sRepublicofChina(PRC),uptoamaximumof10years.

The extended validity of theMJVswill reduce thehassle ofhaving to reapply foravisa foreach trip,andmake itmoreconvenient for PRC tourists to visit Singapore. This willenhanceSTB’seffortstoincreasevisitorarrivalsandtourismspending, which will benefit Singapore businesses andworkersintourism-relatedsectorssuchashotels,attractions,diningandretail. 

“Thismovewill supportSTB’sstrategyofpromotingqualitytourismandattractingvisitorsfromourkeysourcemarkets.Itisalsotimelyasweintensifyourdestinationmarketingefforts

this year, with an exciting calendar of activities planned inconjunctionwithSingapore’s50thanniversary. BesidesChina,STB is also reaching out to visitors fromother keymarketsincludingIndonesia,IndiaandAustralia”,saidMr.LeongYueKheong,AssistantChiefExecutive,InternationalGroup,STB.

In addition, STB is working with our embassy in China toexpand thenetworkofAuthorisedVisaAgents so thatPRCvisitorshavemorechannelstoapplyforSingaporevisas. 

Aspart of itsmarketing efforts todrive travel demand fromthe PRC, STB’s China office had launched a micro-movieby Singaporean director Royston Tan on 15 April 2015.Thismicrofilm showcases unusual aspects of Singapore asseen through the eyes of a Chinese child on an exchangeprogramme, and revolves around the budding friendship hehaswithhishost,aSingaporeanclassmate.
