Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery is very pleased to announce that Jan Brown will have a month solo art exhibition and she will be featured on the gallery’s front page and in the “Solo Art Series” archive.
Jan Brown resides in Michigan and she is an abstract expressionist artist. She will be featured on the Light
Space & Time website, in press releases and throughout the gallery's social media networks. In addition, Jan will be featured on our YouTube channel, in our event catalogue and on our event postcard.
The “Solo Art Series” is a series of monthly solo art exhibitions for established artists who have a body of
work to present to the public. Artist participants were asked to submit the following 3 components for the
“Solo Art Series” competition; 1. Their art. 2. Their artist biography. 3. Their artist statement. All 3
elements were evaluated and judged, which resulted in the art gallery choosing 4 artists to be featured in 4 individual 1 month solo art exhibitions.
Artist Biography:
A life-long resident of Michigan, Jan Brown has nurtured her artistic talent since childhood. She received
a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in printmaking from Michigan State University. She went on to teach art in the Wayne-Westland School District.
After 35 years of teaching, in 2010 she retired and began to explore abstract expressionism. She loved
creating paintings where she wasn’t limited to “reproducing” a likeness. Abstraction freed her up to express
emotion through paint. Finding the human figure beautiful, she has begun to merge the figure with the
abstraction. Since February 2015, she has drawn figures from live modeling sessions using ink wash on
raw canvas. These “drawings” later become the basis of paintings where she uses paint, ink, and raveled string to further work the piece.
Jan’s work has been shown in juried shows throughout Michigan. She is a member of the Lawrence Street
Gallery in Ferndale, Michigan. In classes at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, she has enjoyed the mentoring of Meighen Jackson.
Artist Statement:
The human figure has always fascinated me. Having focused in recent years on non-representational
abstract work, I found I was drawn back to the human figure. This current body of work attempts to blend
the figure into the world of abstraction. Beginning with ink wash drawings on raw canvas from live models,
the “drawings” are literally “ripped up” and their pieces placed on regular gessoed canvas. Once they
“work” as a total image and are adhered to the canvas, other mediums such as acrylic paint, ink, and
raveled string are used to complete the image.
