Prez SezWelcome to 1996! I hope this newletterfinds everyone healthy, happy and filled
with enthusiasm for upcoming mountain
bike events.
First of all, old business. The beard of
. directors has chosen officers for the
1996 calendar year. After much delibra-
tion, Larry Stanley was elected secre-
tary, Will Luckett was chosen treasurer,Mike Herring was picked to be vice-
president, and (because noboody elsewanted the job) I was asked to be presi-dent. The board of directors and offic-
ers' job is to keep things running
smoothly for the benefit of the entire
club. We place the officers' phonenumbers in the n~wsJ ettP.r

On Wednesday January 3rd Ken Hester
began the meeting by introducing the
new officers. If you don't know who
they are then read the rest of the newslet-
ter, their names are all over the place.
Ordering jerseys was discussed. Jersey
order forms are due by the February
meeting. Members must have paid their
dues to order a jersey. A $25 deposit is
required to order the jersey. The balance
is due upon receipt of the jersey.
We talked really bad about everybody
who wasn't at tIle meeting. -
Ken Hester will attend an IMBA trail
bicycle advocacy conference in Arizona
at Biosphere II. We can look forward to
Ken's report at our next meeting.
Barry Hair stayed at home and pouted
because he doesn't get to be the president
anymore. (Just kidding)
Planning meetings for proposed
Greenways trails will take place January
16th at 6:30 at Oak Mountain
Elementary School and January 17th at
5:30 at
A new bridge will be built to replace the
Boy Scout Bridge on the red road.
Amy Hunter suggested that the third
weekend of every month be set aside as a
club ride time. Everyone agreed with
her because-.$he is wjldly popular.
Everyone on earth respects her opinion
and does exactly what she suggests.
Respectfully submitted by Larry Stanley,
Secretary

PARTY~Once again, BUMP's year end party was
a success. A good time was had by all,
with a minimum of damage sustained.
Hats off to Joe Cotlin for the use of his
crib. Even though we don't know how
grateful we are, I'm sure we all appreci-
ate Laura Frasier cleaning the place.
According to Joe the party can be classi-
fied a success. Joe says BUMP can party
at his house in the future, "but next timebring more beer."
The mountain bike cake, created by
Teresa Piercy, was almost as big anattraction as the uni-skate -cycle-thing.
After a mere swallow of meade, every-
one seemed to gain unicycle skills. Or
maybe everyone's watching skills detor-
iated. Anyway, Happy New Year to
everyone from BUMP.

Pedestrian andGreenway Plan
By now, all of you BUMP members
should have received a direct mailer
announcment about a meeting concern-ing the Birmingham Area Bicycle
Pedestrian and Greenway Plan. If youdid not receive this piece of direct mail
then you have moved and neglected to let
your club know.
There will be two additional public meet-
ings. One on January 16th at Oak
Mountain Intermediate School, and One
on January 17th at Birmingham
Botanical Garden. The meeting mat you
have been personally invited to is on
January 17th at 7:00 PM at Ryans Steak
house, please RSVP as requested.
This meeting has been organized for the
purpose of gelling you, the members of
BUMP, the Birmingham Bicycle Club,
AWV, and the Birmingham Track Club
together to review the proposed plan and
to get feedback from you. Think about
it, who else has a better insight of the
desires and needs of the bicycle and
pedestrian community than these groups?
BUMP Jersey Order Form
If you don't show up, then don't whine
when the politicains say "we commis-
sioned a design firm to research and
design a plan, but the community
obviously does not see the need for any
bicycle and pedestrian improvements.
Not even the bicycle clubs were willing
to show up to discuss the plan!" Don't
let it happen, the opportunity will not
come around again for a long time.
The speaker will be Andy Clarke from
the Bicycle Federation. The program is
sure to be informative and you will have
an opportunity to review the proposed
bike/ped plan for the Jefferson and
Shelby County areas.
Several of us bicyclists are members of
and have been attending the Greenways
Advisory Board meetings with some
regularity since last spring. RobertGambrell, Bryan Oliver, and Howard
Skipper are all members of the Advisory
Board and have had much input to the
plan. We do however need a showing of
interest and support from the bicycling
community for this planning to ever
amount to anything.
