Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes; Five hundred twenty-five thousand moments so dear. Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes; How do you measure, measure a year? In daylights, in sunsets In midnights, in cups of coffee. In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife. In five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes - How do you measure, a year in the life?

(Lyrics from “Seasons of Love” from the Broadway musical RENT)

Each of us has the opportunity to choose how we live and measure our lives. Challenging circumstances will arise that we can’t control, but we can choose how we will respond. In the musical RENT, the characters live under the shadow of AIDS. Each individual is struggling with what it means to live life fully, to be present in the moment. The proposed solution is the same as is true for all great faiths; “Choose Life -- Choose Love.” Our Judaism has its own meaningful particular practices - individually and communally - by which we strengthen our hearts, minds and souls so as to live the

mitzvah of “choosing life.” Each mitzvah we choose to engage in has the power to bring healing and strength to ourselves and others. Too much of our “five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes” can be wasted, and yet each “New Year” we can give ourselves the gift of knowledge that “TODAY, I can start making my moments count.”

In secular life we have our one New Year’s Day, but in Judaism we have four New Year’s Days. We are most familiar with Rosh HaShanah – the 1st of Tishrei. But, the Mishnah teaches we have four New Years, also including:

1st day of Nisan – A new year for counting the years of the reigns of kings in ancient Israel and the anniversary of the founding of the Jewish people as we escaped from Egypt during our Passover story.

1st of Elul – A new year for animal tithes in support of the Great Temple of Jerusalem.

15th of Shvat - Tu B'Shvat - A new year for the trees.

The Rabbis encouraged multiple New Years because it was an acknowledgement that each day that we are blessed to receive can be the beginning of our “New Year.” May our new secular year be an additional opportunity to discover the true purpose of our lives, and may God grant us good health and fulfillment in our lives.

A NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Happy 2014! I hope everyone had a wonderful start to the new (secular) year.

In just a few weeks, on Saturday January 25th, we will host our Annual Celebration and Auction at Temple Sholom. The celebration committee is working hard to put on a very special evening. We will have great food, signature cocktails, an amazing silent auction, music, and a magical performance not to be missed. We hope by having this year’s celebration on a Saturday night, it will be easier for everyone to join us, have some fun, and stay out a little late.

While the annual celebration raises funds necessary to support our entire shul, a large component of the funds raised from this event is used to subsidize the Religious School. Accordingly, I encourage all parents who have children attending the Religious School to make supporting the celebration a priority.

This year, we have three very deserving honorees. Cantor Asa Fradkin and his lovely wife Sarah will be honored for their seven years of dedicated service to our congregation. All of us have been moved by the musical talents of this wonderful couple. The spirit and enthusiasm they bring to our synagogue is inspiring. Cantor Asa and Sarah have meant so much to our

congregation, especially to our children. Please join me in showing our gratitude for their unending contribution to our community.

Nicki Markley is being honored with the Anshei Chayil award, as a Woman of Valor, for her courage in the face of adversity. In 2011, Nicki was in a terrible car accident. Her doctor wouldn’t directly answer the question as to whether or not she would ever walk again. Today, after a long rehabilitation, Nicki walks under her own power. The strength and perseverance she exhibited throughout her recovery is an inspiration to all of us.

I look forward to honoring these three extraordinary members of our Temple Sholom community with all of you.

Dan

Mazel Tov to our B‘nai Mitzvah March 1, 2014 Daniel Latto Son of Rachel and Rich Brother of Sam and Becca

My name is Daniel Latto. I am a 7th grader at the Stanwich School. I like to play football, basketball, baseball, golf, and paddle. For my Mitzvah Project, I volunteer at Neighbor to Neighbor and plan to donate a portion of my Bar Mitzvah gifts to cancer research in memory of my grandparents, Robert and Lois Green and Phyllis Latto. Becoming a Bar Mitzvah to me means that I will be able to do more mature things and become more involved in the Jewish Community.

March 15, 2014 Karyn Handler Daughter of Debbie and Steve Handler Sister of Samantha and Josh

My name is Karyn Handler. I am a 7th grader at the Windward School in White Plains. I enjoy playing soccer, skiing, tennis, dancing (hip hop!), and hanging out with friends. I look forward to my amazing summers at Lake Bryn Mawr Camp each year. For my Mitzvah Project, I will be collecting bat mitzvah and prom dresses for Sloan Kettering’s annual pediatric prom. Becoming a Bat Mitzvah means maturity, responsibility, and helping others.

March 8, 2014 Brian Luntz Son of Kristin and David Brother of Olivia

My name is Brian Luntz. I am a 7th grader at Eastern Middle School. I play the bass in my school’s string ensemble and jazz band, and I also love to sing. My favorite sport is squash. For my Mitzvah Project, I have been helping to care for our family’s three foster dogs, and hope to raise awareness of puppy mill cruelty and the importance of adopting rescued pets. Becoming a Bar Mitzvah means I will have more responsibility for carrying on our Jewish traditions.

February 8, 2014 Marley Tannenbaum Daughter of Missy and Scott Sister of Lexi and Kira

My name is Marley Tannenbaum. I am a 7th grader at Blind Brook Middle School. I enjoy dancing, basketball, and lacrosse. I spend my summers at Camp Danbee. For my community service project, I worked with Gabby & Alex Feuerstein and Chad Minick. We raised money to purchase laptop computers to donate to teens/schools that cannot afford to buy any on their own. Becoming a Bat Mitzvah means that I am more responsible and accountable for my actions.

February 8, 2014 Paige Maizes Daughter of Robin and Michael Sister of Jeffrey and Alexa

My name is Paige Maizes. I am a 7th grader at Blind Brook Middle School. I am a gymnast and I also play soccer and basketball. I love to read too! This will be my 6th summer at Point O’ Pines. In December I began to work one-on-one with special needs children in a variety of sports. Working toward my Bat Mitzvah has helped me to realize that if I work hard enough, that there isn’t anything that I can’t do!

February 1, 2014 Spencer Gladstone Son of Paula and Douglas Brother of Jordan

My name is Spencer Gladstone. I am a 7th grader at Blind Brook Middle School. I live in Rye Brook, New York. I enjoy my summers at Camp Taconic in the Berkshires. I like to hang out with my friends, play soccer, basketball, tennis, and go on vacations. For my Mitzvah Project, I am hoping to raise money for research and spread awareness of the rare form of cancer my grandfather has, Epithelioid Sarcoma. Becoming a Bar Mitzvah is about becoming a Jewish man.

January 25, 2014 Sarah Packer Daughter of Suzanne and Craig Sister of Kaitlyn, Benjamin, and Samantha,

My name is Sarah Packer. I am a 7th grader at Greenwich Academy. I enjoy reading, cooking, playing with animals, and dancing. For my Mitzvah Project, I am volunteering at Kids in Crisis, an agency that helps children and their families in Fairfield County, CT. Becoming a Bat Mitzvah to me means that I will have a greater role in the Jewish community.

March 8, 2014 Emma Rosenkranz Daughter of Lauren Sister of Lili and Thomas

March 29, 2014 Grant Davis Resnick Son of Cheryl and Jeff Resnick Brother of Annabelle and Lauren

My name is Grant Resnick. I am a 7th grader at Central Middle School. I love to play baseball, basketball, football, tennis and golf. For my Mitzvah Project, I am volunteering with some friends at Neighbor to Neighbor. A portion of the monetary gifts I receive will be donated to research organizations for Alzheimers and Multiple Sclerosis, both of which diseases affect members of my family. I am very proud of the hard work I have achieved over the years in becoming a Bar Mitzvah and am excited to be viewed as an adult in the Jewish religion.

A Magical Evening in Store (continued from page 1)

Sarah’s work experience includes Sesame Workshop, Fisher-Price, Bridges School, and the Stamford JCC. She is also a registered Music Together teacher. Cantor Asa and Sarah frequently sing together at Temple

services and events. They are blessed with a daughter, Dafna, and a son, Noam.

Nicki Markley is being recognized with the Anshei Chayil award, as a Woman of Valor, for her courage during trying times. In 2011, Nicki was in a head on collision with a truck. She doesn’t remember anything about the accident, only that she awoke two months later in a nursing facility. Nicki showed incredible courage and strength throughout her long rehabilitation, and happily, today she is fully mobile. Nicki and her husband Henry, of blessed memory, have a long history with Greenwich and with Temple Sholom. Nicki is a regular at our Sunday minyan, frequent participant in Lunch ‘n Learn and other programming at Temple Sholom, and a lifetime member of Sisterhood.

Be sure to get your tickets for what is sure to be a wonderful evening. Tickets and journal ads can be purchased and silent auction bids made online at www.biddingforgood.com/templesholom.

WHAT IS A YAHRZEIT? Meaning “Time of Year” in Yiddish, this anniversary commemorates the death of a loved one. It is symbolized by the recitation of the Kaddish prayer and reading of the names of those dearly departed in the Temple. At home, a candle is lit on the eve of Yahrzeit to represent the soul and burns for 24 hours. Tzedakah, a Hebrew word for righteousness and signifying charity, is offered to the family in the form of gifts, donations, or simply emotional support. In this way, we remember our beloved. Yahrzeit Candles are available for a small donation in the main Temple office.
