Education

Jan's education traversed from being liberal (a degree in fine arts, sculpture) to specific (architecture, health architecture, project management). Recent studies have honed his skills in hands-on building technologies because as an architect, he believes it's dangerous to forget that construction is never an abstraction, that it involves skill, time and hard work.

Certificate in Construction and Design of Arches, Vaults and Domes (2017) UNESCO Earth Institute. Certificate in construction using Earth Technologies (2017) UNESCO Earth Institute Architectural Registration (NSW) 9714. CSPO Certification for Project Management (2014) Scrum Alliance, London. Certificate in Principles and Practices of University Teaching and Learning, (2013) University of Sydney. PhD. There’s something in my head (but it’s not me): The complex relationship between the built environment and schizophrenia. Architecture and Neuroscience, (2009-2012) University of Sydney. Masters of Architecture (2008) UNSW. Bachelor of Architectural Studies (2005-2007) UNSW. Exchange year Bachelor of Architecture (2004) University of California, Berkeley. Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in sculpture (2001-2003) CoFA UNSW

Employment History Jan's career as an architect has focused on one thing: Design for better health and behaviour. His approach has always been to take current models of design praxis and to challenge them with three questions: 'What works for the user?'; 'What works for the staff?'; And 'what works for everyone else?'. These questions are significant

Page 3: Jan Golembiewski - Bio

because the architecture of the twentieth century only asked; 'What works for staff (right now)?' and the answers came at the expense of everyone else, including users, optimal health and behavioural outcomes, efficiency, cost and relevance for future conditions – because to design for the future, traditionally architects have only looked to the past. Reliance only on exemplars is a ridiculous fallacy because knowledge doesn't stand still while we stupidly copy the successes of the past. Models must change, and to change it we have to use the best of complexity science: Cynefin, Structured Causal Analysis, Design Thinking, Frame innovation and Lean tools – Lean because subtraction and simplification tend to reduce complexity, and improve results, where addition usually works the other way. So the next question is academic; ‘What theory seems to explain the effects we are seeing and want to replicate?’ And then scientific; ‘What safe-to-fail experimentation can we do to make this complex system better, without significant risk?’ Thus the pattern of Jan’s work has apparently fluctuated between developing scientific theory and praxis – applying the theory; that is, getting it dirty with the complexity of real life in order that we can reiterate and improve. The significant successes he has been part of (success is always teamwork; it genuinely has many fathers) is no accident, it's methodical, and the product of a deep desire for constant improvement. It also always carries the same hallmarks: simplicity and person-centeredness.

2019- present: Associate Professor of Environmental Design and Health at Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey (visiting). 2016- present: Practicing (Registered) Architect, Psychological Design. Psychological Design was established to provide bespoke behavioural and psychological outcomes using the power of architecture and design. Jan is the director and registered architect, knowledge and design lead at Psychological Design. Projects have included: aged care and dementia facilities, schools, subacute accommodation for PTSD recovery, private clinics and hospitals, master-planning an large education precinct and several private houses. 2014-2016: Adjunct Professor of Design and Health at QUT, responsible for industry engagement and health design research leadership in the Creative Industries Faculty. 2013-2016: Research and Knowledge Lead and part of the design team at Medical Architecture (in 2014 renamed MAAP). MAAP started out as the ‘built-projects’ unit of The Medical Architecture Research Unit at London Southbank University, and since then it has maintained its foundation in research and innovation, working on countless projects globally, delivered by offices in London, Newcastle (UK) and Sydney. MAAP had an impressive resource of world firsts to choose from, being behind much of the world’s innovation in inpatient accommodation, mental health facilities, modular construction, innovative procurement, Lean design, patient-centred models of care, ambulatory hospitals and masterplanning. MAAP considers its greatest strength to be in knowledge leadership, masterplanning, cultural competency and Lean, evidence-driven care-based healthcare architecture. During this time Golembiewski was the global knowledge leader for the firm, working on the design and knowledge for the following projects among others: The world’s premier mental health recovery unit in Qatar; the vision and the rules for the public tender

for a major public hospital in Singapore; the master-plan for Australia’s biggest hospital precinct and several other hospitals, mental health facilities and psychiatric treatment facilities around the world. 2010-2012: Numerous faculty board and administrative positions at the University of Sydney. Responsible for promoting the research interests and wellbeing of postgraduate researchers while Jan was doing his PhD. 2008: Adjunct researcher in the Centre for Health Assets Australasia, UNSW, Researching cross-cultural mores in healthcare facilities as part of a team effort to create the Australian Health Facilities Guidelines. Casual tutor (2007-2018) Tutoring at UNSW, University of Sydney and UTS in Architecture, Interiors, Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation, Design Studios and History and Theory. Senior (architectural) Designer (2006-2007) DtB Architects, a firm specialising in healthcare facility design and other institutional scale projects. Designer and draughtsman (2005-2006) Smartshax, a firm specialising in the design and construction of intelligent off the grid homes. Architectural Internship (2005) Lippman Architects in Sydney, a high-end boutique architectural firm specialising in steel and glass constructions. During this project, Jan designed an eco-tourism resort. Prior to going into architecture, Jan Golembiewski was a creative Director (Art Director) in the advertising industry. In this role, he had lots of experience managing large budgets and delivery contracts, multidisciplinary teams and a diverse range of clients. Creative Director (1998-2001) Icon Advertising (Sydney). Main accounts included Greenpeace, The Commonwealth Bank and Open Universities. Creative Director (1994-1998) Frontline Advertising (Sydney). Responsible for the Microsoft account including the launch of Windows 95 and Windows 98. Senior Designer (1992-1994) Breadline Advertising (London). Designer and Art Director (1990-1992) Breadline Advertising (Sydney).

Written work Jan is an accomplished writer. He tells his students that 70% of an architects’ job is writing – writing reports, tenders, explaining concepts. For Jan it’s more because research is intrinsic to his work. He has written (sometimes co-written) over 80 books, reports for government, articles, chapters, journal publications and conference presentations, and there are several others in the pipeline. Most of these concern health design (clinical design guidance, etc.) and healthy architecture (non-clinical) and for this work, he is one of the best-cited health architects in the world. He has recently appeared on television to talk about his architecture (Chanel 7 Weekend Sunrise and SkyNews) and radio programs, including Blueprint for Living and The Spirit of Things on ABC Radio National; an article was written about his architectural work in Vogue Living; and two films are currently in production featuring his work, one of which is to be co-produced by Oscar-winning producer, Emile Sherman, another by the BBC.
