CILT Award 2013

Mr. Mark Whitehead, Chief Executive, said “Hactl is delighted with the recognition by independent experts, and we would like to share the honor and the joy with our air cargo community. I would also like to dedicate the Award especially to our frontline staff, who work tirelessly, and often in harsh environment.”

2

Dedicated and Skilled Employees“To deliver exceptional services, we need not only the right facilities and technology but also skilled and dedicated employees,” said Mr. Whitehead. “We recognise the importance of recruiting and retaining the best people so that we can consistently deliver high quality services to our customers. Throughout the year, we put lots of efforts in recruiting, training and retaining our employees.” added Mr. Whitehead.

Hactl employs 2,500 full time staff, most of them in frontline and operations. In 2013, Hactl conducted 77 training courses for 1,400 employees at all levels and sponsored another 200 to attend external programmes.

Contributing to the Green Airport and the CommunityApart from its outstanding services, the company is also aware of its responsibility to protect the environment. Hactl is the first air cargo terminal in Hong Kong to obtain certification for ISO50001:2011 Energy Management System in July 2013, adopting the best practices in conserving energy consumption.

“Throughout the years, we have taken many steps on recycling and reducing our carbon footprint. In 2013, we recycled 72% of plastic waste and 99% of wooden pallets. We are also regularly on the lookout for the latest technologies, for example in using electric vehicles and replacing lighting system with energy-efficient LED lights,” said Mr. Whitehead.

Hactl has been awarding certificates of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), Clean Air Charter, and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, contributing to the green airport.

Ngong Ping Cable Car is one of the few bi-cable circulating cable car systems in the world, and it is also the biggest aerial cable car of its kind in Asia. Ngong Ping 360 is committed to providing locals and overseas guests alike the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city as well as the opportunity to embrace nature along the way.

Customer-centric approach“Ngong Ping 360 puts emphasis on providing excellent services, promoting team spirit and creating pride,” said Mr. Wilson Shao, Managing Director of Ngong Ping 360. “We recognise our staff as our most valuable asset, and our core value is to deliver excellent guest services by working as one team. In order to achieve service excellence, we have spared no effort in delivering a dedicated service approach, building a positive service culture, engaging our staff and tracking our service performance.

“Since Ngong Ping 360’s cable car system can be affected by adverse weather, we have redesigned our system beginning with areas that directly interact with our customers.”

Mr. Shao explained that part of this approach involves the introduction of live broadcast capabilities into cable car cabins to provide guests with timely information during the

occasional service disruptions that occur due to a range of factors, including loading wheelchair-bound guests onto the cable car and adverse weather conditions.

“Compared with playing a taped message during our past service disruptions, broadcasting a live feed can ease anxiety and reinforce a sense of security among our guests.” Mr. Shao added.

Ngong Ping 360 wins the CILT Award 2013 In Recognition of Service ExcellenceNgong Ping 360 is a dynamic tourist experience that combines a stunning 5.7km cable car journey with an impressive culturally themed village, taking guests on countless stunning journeys between Tung Chung Town Centre at sea level and the soaring highland of Ngong Ping. As one of Hong Kong’s “must-see” tourist attractions, Ngong Ping 360 puts its customers first in every aspect of its operations.

Mr. Wilson Shao, Managing Director of Ngong Ping 360, said: “Ngong Ping 360 is striving to be the gateway to Lantau Island West and a leading tourist destination.”

CILT Award 2013

Ngong Ping 360 provides a dynamic experience that features a visually spectacular 5.7-kilometre, 25-minute cable car journey offering panoramic views of the iconic Tian Tan Buddha statue, North Lantau Country Park, Tung Chung Bay and the Hong Kong International Airport.

Reliability is the key to successNgong Ping 360 adopts an Integrated Management System that incorporated international ISO9001 and OHSAS 18001 standards to support system assurance. Ngong Ping 360 attaches great importance to operational effectiveness in terms of providing safe, reliable and enjoyable cable car services, so it has installed a set of precise sensors in its cable car system to closely monitor the operation of the cable cars. More than 40,000 signals are detected and managed every single hour to ensure that the cable car operation adheres to the highest safety standards. In addition, scheduled maintenance works are arranged every year. In 2013, Ngong Ping Cable Car achieved a service reliability rating of 99.82%.

Caring for the environmentNgong Ping 360 is devoted to the protection of the environment and is committed to preserving North Lantau Country Park. “During the design of our cable car system, a thorough ecological survey was conducted to avoid affecting the areas

with rare and protected species,” said Mr. Shao. “In addition, helicopters and mules were used to transport over 12,000 tons of materials during the construction phase, while the ropeway system was operated on an energy-efficient basis.

In addition, Ngong Ping Village is Hong Kong’s First Zero Plastic Shopping Bag Village as the Company and its tenants have stopped offering plastic shopping bags since June 2010 with an aim to minimise the use of non eco friendly materials and provide visitors with a fresh journey and a green shopping experience.

Becoming Hong Kong’s choice tourist destinationNgong Ping 360 is located amidst the natural blue and green blend of Lantau Island, and it has worked to continually maintain the natural environment and features of the surrounding countryside, providing great potential for the development of sensory tourism. Ngong Ping 360 therefore plans to invest over HK$30 million towards renovating its facilities, enhancing its services and introducing a number of new sensory tourism programmes.

“As one of Hong Kong’s major tourist attractions, Ngong Ping 360 strives to explore opportunities to enrich the travel experience, with sensory tourism being the main theme of Ngong Ping 360 from 2014,” said Mr. Shao. “Accordingly, Ngong Ping 360 will launch a wide range of new programmes and services to position itself as the gateway to Lantau Island West and a leading tourist destination, and to promote the economy and development of Lantau Island.”

Mr. Shao is gratified that Ngong Ping 360 was chosen as the winner of the CILT Award 2013, and he believes this recognition will encourage staff to keep pursuing excellence in customer service and promoting the Ngong Ping 360 brand.

CILTHK Student Day 2014 To encourage students to take note and care about the development of the transport and logistics industry, the Institute has been organising the CILTHK Student Day annually since 1997. This year, the event was successfully held on 8th March at the PolyU Hong Kong Community College (West Kowloon Campus) and was participated by 9 teams from universities/colleges in Hong Kong and Macau. The case study on “Free MTR rides to ease morning crush, do you think it can be provided in Hong Kong’s MTR as well?” presented by students of the Chinese University of Hong Kong won the championship. Mr. Kenrick Fok, Chief Judge, praised all participating students had made the greatest efforts to prepare and were able to give reports with analysis and necessary information within a short time. He commented that the level of each group’s analytical and reporting skills were better than last year but suggested students could include more personal opinions, to analyse the crux of the issue from multi-angles. Since there were few cross-border questions to comparing Hong Kong with the Mainland and/or Macau, Mr. Fok referred the cross-border transportation would be the future direction of social development, students were encouraged to pay more attention in this regard. It was announced at the end of the award ceremony that the next CILTHK Student Day 2015 would be hosted at IVE (Tsing Yi). The event was closed under the successful conclusion of applause.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Audit 2014Another cycle of CPD Audit will commence in June 2014. Members selected will be notified by the CILTHK office to submit their CPD records and documentary evidence for review. The schedule of CPD audit 2014 is as follows:

Date Activities Early of June Notify selected CMILTs who are randomly drawn for the auditAugust Review the CPD records sheets by audit panelMid of September CPD Award presentation at Annual General Meeting 2014

A briefing session of the CPD audit to CILT members will be held on 19 June 2014 evening at CILTHK office. Members especially CMILT are encouraged to attend this briefing session to know more about CPD and CPD audit requirements.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the term defined for continuously acquiring and improvement of knowledge, skills and competence throughout a logistic and transport professional’s working life through relevant learning activity, whether formal and structured or informal and self-directed (see Types of CPD below). CPD obligations are common to most prestige professions amongst others CILTHK. Throughout the years the Institute has been actively permeating the understanding of CPD to Members, there were 5 quizzes about CPD knowledge launched lately through Institute’s newsletters and websites in past 12 months.

Types of CPD There are two categories of CPD activities; viz. the “Structured” (formal learning) and the “Unstructured” (informal learning). Structured CPD can be achieved through interaction with other individuals like attendance at CILTHK recognised technical meetings, seminars, lectures, and courses. Unstructured CPD is normally achieved through members’ private reading and studying. CPD points are awarded to members taking part in the CPD activities. To pass an audit, the minimum CPD points required for a CMILT are 200 CPD

points in every two calendar years. Details of the CPD can be also found in the Membership Handbook.

Why CPD audit is required?CILTHK is committed to ensure our members, in particularly those members who have Chartered status, have maintained the required competencies of professionalism and up-to-date expertise, and that their involvement in CPD activities will be audited from time to time. Members are required to maintain records and documentary evidence to support their attendance or completion of CPD activities, and to provide such records and documentary evidence when they are randomly selected for a review.

Awards to proactive participants!!! It is strongly recommended that you take a positive approach to your personal and professional development thus this audit. A “memorable” Institute gift will be awarded to Members who have submitted their CPD records on time for audit. Moreover, a CPD grand award will be presented to a member who has achieved the highest marks among the selected members at Annual General Meeting in September 2014.

Low Carbon Logistics: Good Practice and Guideline for SMEs

To enable SMEs participants familiarising the concept of Low Carbon Logistics, group discussions on case studies were formed in the training workshop

With the kind funding of the Trade and Industry Department, C.Y. Tung International Centre for Maritime Studies (ICMS) and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong (CILTHK) co-organised the project, entitled “Low Carbon Logistics: Good Practice and Guideline for SMEs”. The project was aimed at helping SMEs to reduce carbon emissions and enhance competitiveness in the global market by familiarising local SMEs with low carbon policies and good practices in logistics services in the Greater Pearl River Delta.

Low carbon logistics denotes logistics activities that reduce carbon emissions through low carbon manufacturing, low carbon packing, low carbon warehousing and low carbon transportation. ICMS is administered by the Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies and the Low Carbon Logistics project is supported by the SME Development Fund of the Trade and Industry Department of the HKSAR Government.

Between August 2012 and November 2013, there were site visits to explore low-carbon logistics problems and related practices. Good practices of Low Carbon Logistics were identified by conducting site visits at more than 20 companies in Hong Kong and PRD; 6 seminars were set up by inviting experts for presenting and sharing the latest information of Low Carbon Logistics.

The Opening Seminar on Low Carbon Logistics was successfully held on 28 March 2013. The Opening Seminar was inaugurated with opening addresses by officiating guests including Prof. Chung-Lun Li, Acting Director of C.Y. Tung International Centre for Maritime Studies; Prof. Becky P.Y. Loo, President of The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong; and Honourable Frankie YICK Chi-ming, Legislative Councillor (Transport Constituency). Dr. T.L. Yip, project coordinator summarised the project status. This Ceremony illustrated the beginning of activities. The two speakers shared their experiences on environmental management and energy saving solutions. The speakers were Mr. Tai Shan Chien James, General Manager cum Technical Director of Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) Limited and Mr. King L. Lai, Director – Finance, MSS, Group HR & TD of Leo Paper Group (Hong Kong) Ltd.

3 training workshops were held to provide opportunities to SMEs participants to exercise their understanding about the good practices, e.g. quantifying carbon emissions. The seminars and workshops received positive feedback from the SMEs participants.

6 issues of Newsletter were disseminated to demonstrate the news, knowledge and good practices of Low Carbon Logistics. Additionally, the project team had published a guidebook (in English and Chinese) to promote Low Carbon Logistics in Hong Kong. The book, titled Low Carbon Logistics: Good Practice and Guidelines for SMEs, covers latest concepts, policies and regulations of Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta in addition to operation and management practices recommended for SMEs. This guidebook summarised the findings and experiences learnt by visiting SMEs in shipping, logistics, transport, trading and manufacturing which looked into industrial behaviours and potential problems related to the realisation of Low Carbon Logistics. A web page was built up for easy access to news, learning resources and the guidebook by interest parties. Fruitful results were gained from this project.
