Happy New Year! 2015 is looking like it’s the year of celebrations, We are 30years old! I’m am very excited and looking for-ward to a fun packed year. We kicked off with a lovely laid back new years day, not too many sore heads reported and a beautiful lunch, which our meat was gener-ously provided by Ben the Butcher, what a legend! Unfortunately our Show and shine was postponed due to rain that never turned up, and would have if we had decided to run it. We have now set a new date the 14th February, Valentines Day, what a beautiful way to romance your

loved one! (insert cheeky grin) We also have a bus trip to the Healy Factory. The bus is of 70’s era so in keeping I suggested we come dressed in appro-priate wear of that time, so dust off your velour, your bellbottom pants, platform shoes, mini skirts, get your groove on, Partridge family style and enjoy a fun trip. And as always coming up, the esteemed Norm Tolley Run. A fantastic run, the run if you only do one run a year, this is it! This months newsletter features our friends in New Zealand and their annu-al Dodge Bros. tour, celebrating 100 years last year, what a milestone! We have a few bike runs and a lot of pho-

tos. Keep sending me information to put in the newsletter, we all enjoy your input. On the subject of photos I plan to put a shared folder online for all to see and download as they wish. Just not sure which one to use. Until then we continue to post a few bits and pieces to our Facebook page and our web site, go and have a look. ( you don’t have to be on face book to view it ) Till next month, keep smiling and keep moving! Cheers Donna :o)

Dear Members

Welcome to 2015, I do hope you had a safe an enjoyable Christmas and I wish

you joy, prosperity and good health in the year ahead.

This year’s New years day celebration was a real treat. For me it epitomises what

our club is all about. Families getting together and enjoying each other’s company

and sharing our common interest of older vehicles and creating community. Our

club community has so much to look forward to this year. With all these upcom-

ing events I look forward to seeing our club family continue to bond and grow. It

would be great to see some of our newer members come along and be part of it too.

For many of us the New year is a time to reflect and build our dreams and plans.

For myself, I am going to spend as much energy as I can securing the our club

room premises on a more permanent basis. Or, at the very least, be able to person-

alise it with a bit of our own character. I plan on having discussions with the key

stakeholders early in the year when most return form leave.

The mid week twilight ride AKA Bug Catcher run starts this Wednesday 7th Jan at

6.30 pm from the club rooms and will continue each Wednesday through daylight

savings. The concept is about getting together for a one hour ride mid week to

make the most of daylight savings. We plan on finishing with a quick bite to eat at

Liberty Inn in Warragul.

I am also very excited about the Show and Shine. This is great opportunity to

share with the community our passion and hope that they too can be part of it.

Until next time- Keep dreaming

We were very sad to hear of the passing of Bill Shelton on 14th December. He will sadly missed. A card was sent to his family. Cards were sent to our sickies – Wendy Hitchins who is suffering from whooping cough and Dirk Kurpershoek who recent-ly had an operation . Bert West spent a day in hospital but still managed to attend our Christmas breakup! Not many members attended the Nar Nar Goon picnic as the weather was very inclement that day. Nicole Coulson did a really good job with our hampers for the day – Maureen Henry and I sold nearly $200 worth of tickets! Both prizes were won by Dandy Valley Historic Car Club members. They supplied a real good spread for both morning and afternoon tea. The following Sunday, 72 members of our club attended our Christmas lunch at the Neerim South Hotel. Santa ar-rived ,sporting a very good suntan, and there were lots of raffle prizes thanks to Nicole, Donna and Jill. We all enjoyed our lunch and the Hotel did a great job of catering for us. Our next event was our New Years Day barbecue, cooked by President Jerry. We enjoyed sausages, hamburgers and steaks – all supplied by Longwarry Butchers. Thanks to Ben for generously donating all the meat. Thanks to all the mem-bers who brought salads and sweets and for all the help I had on the day. Our next event will be on 10th January, when we will be conducting a Show and Shine day, for club members only. There will be trophies donated by one of our members. So please bring along your pride and joy. We will be having a barbecue and selling sausages in bread at $2.00 and hamburgers at $3.00, these will be accompanied (if required) by onions, beet-root and tomatoes. Soft drinks will be available at $1.50 per can. Members are requested to bring morning tea to share. I hope you all have a great day! Our January General Meeting will be held on 17thJanuary at the Club Rooms. On 26th January, we will celebrate Australia Day at Shady Creek with a Barbecue. Meat will be supplied. Please put your name on the list on the board. Please bring a salad or sweet of your choice to share. Barry Hitchins will lead a run starting from the Club Rooms – the time is on the board. After lunch, Barry will lead those who require to go to Drouin to show off their beautiful cars and bikes. 7th February is the 37th Annual Berwick Swap Meet run by the Dandenong Valley Historic Car Club. 22nd February is the Norm Tolley Run. Morning tea at the club rooms between 9.00am and 9.45am – please bring a plate ……. with something on it!! Bikes, led by Ian Troughton, will leave at 10.00am followed by the cars, led by Barry Hitchins. We will take a scenic route to Trafalgar Golf Club for lunch at 12.45 followed by a run back to the club rooms for after-noon tea. 150 clubs responded to the Vicroads request for comment. VicRoads has considered the comments and a de-tailed response is to be expected. Currently there are nearly 50,000 vehicles on the CPS, made up as follows: 500 Street Rods 2,500 Veteran & Vintage 1000 Bikes Old CH plate 2,500 43,500 H Plate The review is continuing however, Vicroads have advised the AOMC representatives of the following: The 25 year rolling cut-off will continue, Roadworthy Certificates will be required for all vehicles built post 31 Dec 1948. Safety checks can still be used for vehicles built before that date. There is a proposal for "continuation". Which is models in production on 31 Dec 18948 continue to be eligible for Safety checks until the end of the model run. The regulations for pre 1949 brakes are to be revised, but we have no details on that as yet. There will be recognition of previous modifications made to a vehicle if it has been registered in Victoria. The example given was RHD conversions. The primary responsibility modifications rest with the owner of the vehicle. The club responsibility is, "if the car comes to notice". We are not sure exactly what that means at this stage. Roll bares are now included as a non certifiable item, Roll cages however, will need certification. Minor changes to wheels and tyres are acceptable to reflect modern tyre types and sizes. Imported vehicles will be required to provide copies of the import permit and customs documentation, to be included in the CPS. VASS guidelines are still in the drafting stage. RWC guidelines are also still in the drafting stage. VicRoads are preparing guidelines for Vehicle inspectors on how RWCs will apply to Vintage, Veteran and Historic Vehicles. A work in progress Where a RWC is required, the owner of the vehicle is to provide the photos. It is not the responsibility of the club to take the photos. Log books are to be changed to make them tamper proof. This will increase the cost of the books. Currently Rally cars have an expensive scheme administered by CAMS. As a consequence many rally cars are on H plates. The cost of the CAMS scheme will be lowered and Rally cars will not be on the CPS. They will still have to be inspected by CAMS. VicRoads advise these changes will occur in Jan 2015. The AOMC's estimate is early 2015. Concerning modifications to post 1969 vehicles, Vicroads will not consider any further changes beyond those already announced as they will affect ADRs. ADRs were introduced in 1969, hence their reluctance to make more changes. Currently there are 858 clubs on the CPS, 73% of which have less than 100 cars on the scheme. So far only 2 clubs have been expelled from the scheme due to rorting. VicRoads position regarding the issue of replica vehicles on the scheme is still unclear. CPS vehicles are not recognised as registered in WA. To travel to WA you will require a WA Temporary Mobility Permit but are not required to fill in the log book. WA are working on a proposal to change this situation. There was discussion around the issue whether , if a CPS vehicle is driven by more than one driver on any given day, that second driver needs to sign the book as well. This issue will be taken up with VicRoads. Currently CPS permits can be renewed up to 12 months after the due date without a new roadworthy. This will

change to 3 months.

I t is with much sadness that we write these few lines about Bill and his late wife Ethel. They were regular

participants in our Club outings and rallies for many years, despite having done al-most a rally just getting to the start from Pakenham Upper. It was always a delight to see Bill and Ethel together—tall Bill with tiny Ethel beside him. Bill loved to drive his old vehicles, wether it was the big Vauxhall sedan or one of his beautifully restored trucks. Many times he hosted one of our Club runs to his coolstore at his home property, making us very welcome. And wasn’t he proud to show us the huge engine used for many years past in cooling the coolstore in ear-lier years. Sadly Ethel had to go into care some years back. Bill used to ride his bicycle to do his shopping, until one day he had a bad fall after which the bicycle went into retirement. Happily, Bill didn’t! Bill ticked over his 20th year as a member of our club in 2012, his member No. being 73. He regularly attended Club meetings at Warragul until recently. In Jan 2014 his beloved Ethel passed away and Bill con-tinued to look after himself and main-tained an interest in old vehicles. Howev-er in December 2014Bill passed away, at the grand age of almost 89 years, and was laid to rest in Pakenham. Born at Shepparton 14/12/1925—died 14/12/2014 Vale to a good Club member, and a good man. We will miss you Bill Margaret & Laurie Owen.

Bill Shelton’s Talk

12 June 2006 Note : This is written in the first person and Bill was going to correct any mistakes. Bill showed photos of the day the car club spent at his cool stores in Shelton’s Road at Pakenham. Bill continues …. The engine pictured was made in 1928 and installed in 1929. It is now on its third set of piston liners, had some wear in the gudgeon pins, piston diameter of eleven and three quarter inch. It was used to drive the cool stores. Our workshop was burnt out in the Ash Wednesday fires, however the engine room was spared. When we came to the cool stores the 1932 Bedford was on the place. The diff packed in and it had six studs not four. Cheneys said that because of this it was one of the first 250 Bedford trucks made. We had four Detroit Fordson tractors. In 1944 my father obtained a lend lease Chev from Preston Motors which had a gas producer. After the war there were rail stoppages every year in Victoria caused by problems with coal mining at Maitland so the fruit had to be carted to Sydney. It took more than 30 hours driving to get to Sydney and we did four trips a week. The two Blitz trucks were bought from Browns in Warragul and cost 132 pounds 10 shillings each. We also sent fruit to Brisbane, carting the fruit to Albury and then into ice trucks, this saved a few days. We did the Albu-ry trip once per week. The cool store was built by G Wolff and Sons in about 1912. They were fruit merchants at the Western Market in Mel-bourne. Isaac and Nathan bought up 1000 acres in the Tumuc valley and they cleared it and planted apples . They owned Kitchen Brothers Soap. The shed was built in about 1918 – 1920 and the cool store in 1928. There were problems with management of the orchards. As a boy I lived in Shepparton on a Closer Settlement fruit block my father obtained in 1912. I was the youngest with three much older brothers who were just leaving school during the depression and my father, to eke out a living, had the boys work his orchard block while he worked at Ma Daley’s abattoir and freezing works in Shepparton. She had bought this as scrap and then decided to run it herself. My father worked in the engine room and got to know Mr. Wolff who in 1937 talked him into managing the orchard. At the time I was eleven. Mr. Wolff locked our family in by selling them 96 acres on the never never of which they cleared 40 acres at war time. He sold the orchard near the cool stores. My brother was a ‘Rat of Tobruk’ and he bought 40 acres as a soldier settlement block. The family leased the cool stores and finally bought them. I have lived in the same house for 69 years. My brother George was very inventive and patented a winch for tree clearing which used a one and a half horsepower engine. We all worked for Wolff and in the winter would work on our own place. There was a shortage of manpower during the war and I was driving a Bedford truck at 14. I used to drive to Pakenham where there was a one man Police Station. The policeman would ring my father and ask him not to have Bill drive into Pakenham as people were complaining. I got my driving licence at 17 on New Year’s day as the law allowing 17 year olds to have licenses came into force on that day. The policemen asked me how long I had been driving, I hesitated and the policeman said that he would just put down six months. Mr. Wolff organised this as everyone else was at war. Mr. Wolff used to say ‘Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves’ and when asked about religion, ‘No-one knows which is the right one’

South Cantabrians, Alistair and Nola Day’s idea for running the Dodge Bros Tour of New Zealand was to enjoy our cars, enjoy the roads, enjoy New Zealand and most of all enjoy each other’s company and that is exactly what we experienced.

Every night concluded with a happy hour to make sure everyone has arrived for the night stopover, and to help out anyone if they are having car problems. It was also a good way to catch up with others that you may not have seen on your travels during the day and to meet others that may only be joining us from that point, or saying goodbye to those that are leaving us the next day.

We headed into Pukekohe in the evening of Saturday November 8th to meet the other par-ticipants and collect our rally pack. We had a great evening getting to know everyone and then proceeded home to finish packing the car for our morning departure.

On Sunday we meet the tour participants at the Nikau Caves café, a location so close to home but we had never visited before. We enjoyed refreshments and a natter before jour-neying down the scenic west coast roads. It took us a while to make it to the Hamilton ‘lunch’ stop and we arrived after 2pm so I apologise for anyone who was waiting to meet us at the Classics Museum.

Monday we departed Te Awamutu for New Plymouth. We stopped at Mike’s Organic Brew-ery and bought a variety of their beers, all but one turned out to be delicious with the OM-PA having way too much hops for our group to enjoy.

The local branch of the VCC put on dinner for us and we got to see Patrick Stieller's original ’38 Dodge. We had booked accommodation at the backpackers that said they had limited private parking which turned out to be three public parks on the main street in front of the building. The night was saved by John Schicker who locked Carlotta in at his nearby work-shop so we didn’t have to worry. The next day we had a tour of his workshop and got to see the progress he is making on restoring his ’38 Dodge in time for Beach Hop.

We had a free day to catch up on washing and maintenance in Wanganui. This was a day of torrential rain and hail so I decided Carlotta was now clean enough. We had a chartered tour on the Wanganui Steam Boat in the afternoon and once again the local branch of the

VCC put on dinner for us. I caught up with Ian Higgins and got to see his beautiful Charger SRT8, oh the sound it made when he left!!

Thursday morning we proceeded to John and Judy Callesen’s at Longburn and to enjoy morning tea and have a tour of their extensive collection of cars. Unfortunately Terry Jenkins’ generator had failed the day before so he decided to turn north and re-turn home.

After lunch we travelled through the scenic Manawutu Gorge and on to the Paihiatua Restoration Society rail sheds to see the fantastic work they have been doing restoring rail cars. Next we stopped at Eketahuna to visit 72 year old Biddy Fraser-Davies who owns and operates a small scale artisan cheese making business. This international award winning cheese maker milks her four cows, Dizzy, Patsy, Holly and Isobel, and makes cheese, often individual cheeses from each animal.

Friday morning we departed Masterton to explore the Wairarapa and enjoy the Fell Loco-motive Museum before ascending the Rimutaka Hill and arriving at Petone. The Welling-ton branch of the VCC put on a meal for the 100 year anniversary of the first Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle although no-one bother to make a birthday cake!! It was a fan-tastic night to say goodbye to everybody who were either continuing South or turning around to head home. Touring New Zealand to celebrate 100 years of the first Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle was a memorable experience with some fantastic people. We travelled 1150 miles (1850km) round trip and Carlotta behaved the whole time. That's the Dodge brothers’ commitment to dependability. Cont. pg. 14

At the New Years day BBQ Andrew O’S and Ian T were having a chat where Ian was informed a ride had been organized for the 4th January by some British Two Stroke Club members. Ian and Andrew thought it would be a good idea to also send out an invite via email to anyone who would like to follow along. It was explained that it would be a somewhat slow ride for some of the larger bikes as two strokes travels at speeds like 55 to 65km/h subject to the South Gippsland hills. It was agreed to, for all to meet at Thorpdale. The plan was to continue to Mirboo Nth for morning tea, but when meeting at Thorpdale and the group found that the bakery was open morning tea was had. At this stage the rain was pretty heavy and a few of the riders had wished that they had packed their wet weather gear, even though it was still quite warm. A group of about 20 bikes and Norm following in his car then headed to Mirboo North to meet up with Ben N. We then headed on a loop through Boolar-ra, Dunbalk, then through Mardan and back to Mirboo Nth for lunch. By this time everyone had dried out and the sun was shining. The non-locals loved the roads and thought we are spoilt for choices. After lunch the group split with the BTSC mem-bers heading back to Churchill via Boolarra South and Yinnar. The BTSC member’s end-ed up traveling approximately 170km for the day. Some of the remaining riders fol-lowed Ian home via Thorpdale and Trafal-gar . It just goes to show one does not need much of an excuse to go for a ride.

January Ride Dates : Monday 26th combined to shady creek

Weds 14th 21st 28th Bug splat

Tuesday Ride 30th Dec 2014

This, our final ride of the year, was to be a little different. Riders

near Warragul would leave the club rooms at 10am and ride to

Thorpdale to meet the folks from down the valley. The idea being

that we would have morning tea at the bakery and lunch at the Fish

Creek Pub.

So far, so good. This all being theory. Actually, Thorpdale bakery

was closed for the festive season so morning tea was at Mirboo

North. On arrival at Fish Creek, the pub was fully booked so lunch

was purchased at the road-house opposite. Ahhhh - the festive sea-

son, and my bright ideas....What a combination.

I'm not sure whether this was the day of rain and the big blow or

the day of rain and the huge wind, the day started fairly gloomy and

hints of rain and a bit of a breeze. Seven of us left Warragul and mo-

tored up the highway to Traf. and then on to Thorpdale where we

met six more riders and discovered the bakery to be closed. So we

headed off to Mirboo North where we were joined by our last rider.

The rain was intermittent but the gusty wind was quite severe at

times causing bikes to lean as if going around a corner whilst mov-

ing straight ahead. At times there were fallen trees across the road,

but we managed to get through just fine, also it was fun dodging all

the pieces of branches and debris as we rode along adding a little

spice to the adventure.

The traffic was light and we enjoyed a run to Boolara, Mirboo, Dum-

balk, Meeniyan and then on to Fish Creek. By this time the rain had

cleared pretty well and at lunch we tucked in to various exotic dish-

es

- usually with chips. The whole group then rode to Trafalgar via

Dumbalk, Mirboo North, Thorpdale and down Sunny Creek Road to

the highway where we wished one another Happy New Year, said

our goodbyes, split up and headed off in our various directions for

home.

Even with the wind and the rain it was a most enjoyable day, well

attended by members of the Drouin Dodderers Motorcycle Gang who

always seem to have an awful lot to say to one another. Magic.

Attendees: Joe-Kawasaki, Alan-Suzuki, Gerry-Honda, Neville-Indian,

Jim-Indian, Daryl-Harley, Brad-BMW, Rex and Fay-Modern, Mac-

Modern, Andrew-Modern, Roy-Modern, Geoff-Modern, Me-Modern.
