What is

MAN?What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thouvisitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hastcrowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over

the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:Psalm 8: 4 – 6

LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him! Man is like to vanity: his days are as a

shadow that passeth away.Psalm 144:3 - 4

What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him? and that thou shouldest setthine heart upon him? And that thou shouldest visit him every morning, and

try him ever y moment?  Job 7: 17 – 18

here is no question more crucial to man

than the question: what is man? WhetherTpublicly or privately, the pressure is on for

man to define himself, the mystery of who we are

has remained for long a puzzle to most of the

human race. This is not a 21st century puzzle butan age long one. Man from generation to

generation has been in search of an answer as to

his true and full identity.

Must I know Who I am?

At the foundation of anyone being able

to maximise the potential of any tool is a clear

understanding of the nature, purpose and

limitations of the tool. A tool not fully understoodwill never fully deliver its full and true potential. So

it is that if man does not fully understand man,

man remains a creature that will never truly and

fully rise up to his full potential. So, a discovery of

man’s true and full identity is the foundation for

man’s discovery of his preordained future and his

inner realizable purpose. When we do not

understand a tool, we certainly will undervalue

and most often under deploy the same – so is thecase with man.

Here is a record of the experience of

John the Baptist in this regards;

And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent

priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who

art thou? And he confessed, and denied not; but

confessed, I am not the Christ. And they asked him,

What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. Then

said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give

an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of

thyself?   John 1:19 - 22

When you do not know who you are,

people will suggest who they think you should be.

Even some others will conclude on your behalf as

to who they think you are. This was the experienceof John the Baptist. Before he could speak, some

called him the messiah, others called him a

prophet. But thank God he knew himself.

DIVERSE VIEWS

Many thinkers and artists have sought

to answer this question. They have looked at men

and then offered a report on man’s nature. Also,

Science, religion and society all give us their views

of who we are. Aristotle defined man as the “rational

animal.” Plato described him as -worldly souls

trapped in a bodily prison. Shakespeare the great

poet dramatized man as an aspiring but foolish

mortal, defeated by a “tragic flaw.” Thomas

Hobbes described man as a mechanistic brute.

Kant saw man as a blind chunk of unreality, in

hock to the unknowable. Hegel saw a half-real

fragment of the state. Victor Hugo saw apassionate individualist undercut by an inimical

universe. Friedrich Nietzsche saw a demoniacal

individualist run by the will to power. John Dewey

saw a piece of flux run by the expediency of the

moment. Sigmund Freud spoke of an excrement-

moulding pervert itching to rape his mother.

These myriad of notions by man about man

and his nature has made the issue for quite a

while one of the most contentious. In this edition, our goal is to blow aside the web of deceit that has

clouded man’s understanding since we first

walked the earth.

Who art thou? - The MAJOR schools

Some believed the world in which we live

was a product of a big bang and the dwellers

therein are a product of a series of on going

evolutionary process. To this group, man justhappened - a chance evolutionary development

not different in kind from the millions of species

that inhabit our planet. Other people - billions -

imagine they are a reincarnation from a previous

life. The good emerging as men and women well

positioned in the society while the bad appear as

base individuals or even as animals. The scripture

however teaches that man was created by a

Supreme Being who ahead of man, created thisplace we call the earth.

The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin

was first published in 1859. It reflected then-

current esoteric ideas, but is generally considered

as the beginning of the concept of the evolution of

mankind. The school defined man as Homo

sapiens, the most advanced of the animal

kingdom that emerged from Homo erectus and

Homo habilis. This school which is rooted on

certain strong and verifiable parameters believe

that man is a member of the animal kingdom

though a higher one. It asserts that in material

make-up, man bears almost exact resemblance

with other members of the animal kingdom. The

components/organs and body parts found in

man is found doing similar functions in other

animals. Also the ability to relate one with another

is not peculiar to man; every other level of the

animal kingdom exhibits this trait in some form -

though at varying degrees.

The creationist on the other hand believe

that man is not an animal -as our researches

prove there’s a quantum difference between us

and our nearest animal “relative”. So he cannot

because of certain physical parallels he shares

with animals be put in their category. To this

school, man essentially is a spirit that has a soul

and dwells in a body. This being will appear on

earth in the flesh only once and within his mortal

body lies an immortal soul which will survive

death in some form (or place) or other.

Before the process of making the first

man, the scriptures made it very clear what man

will look like - God, not animals. He is hence on

earth God’s representative to the rest of the

natural world. But as much as the truth of man

being a creature that is tripartite (spirit, soul and

body) is superior to the evolution theory, this is not

the full picture. That man is tripartite is a truth that

has been with us for so long, yet man is still asking

who art thou?

This question is much more than a trillion

dollar question; it is actually a life’s question. It is

the question whose answer determines the quality

of life we will live on this planet. It is a question

whose answer will set a limit over the possibilities

that is available to us. It is a question whose

answer will produce either obstacles or miracles

on our path to life’s ultimate. Until we come to a

full and true understanding of our identity, destiny

is unrealisable.

The Truth

In Genesis chapter 1, the only written

detailed account that gave us an insight into what

took place at the very beginning; two words that

look alike were used at the origin of man. Though

these two words are often used interchangeably,

they are intrinsically different. Here is the account;

And God said; Let us make man in our image, after

our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish

of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the

cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping

thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created

man in his own image, in the image of God created he

him; male and female created he them.

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be

fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and

subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea,

and over the fowl of the air, and over every living

thing that moveth upon the earth.

Genesis 1: 26 - 28

In verse 26, God said let us make man but in

verse 27 we were told so God created man.

Though these two words are often assumed to

mean the same thing, the bible never so speak as

the Hebrew word make is asìah (aw-saw’) while

the Hebrew word create is bara (baw-raw’) The

word make implies to produce or evolve from

something whereas the words create means to

come forth, or emerge from nothing. The latter is

always used only in relation to God. The truth

however is;

1. Man was both created and

made. This means that as much as it is true that

man was produce via a process that may not be

fully known to us all, man was also created – he

emerged, came forth from nothing.

2. Man’s creation preceded man’s

making. If you are a student of the bible, you will

note the conclusion of God’s operation inchapter 1 of Genesis and the accounts in chapter

2. Chapter 1 essentially is God at work in creation

while chapter 2 is God at work making. Genesis

1: 27 concluded that So God created man. This

expression was with a note of finality, however,

when you read Genesis 2:4 -7, you will get a

clearer picture of the whole scenario.

These are the generations of the heavens and of theearth when they were created, in the day that the

LORD God made the earth and the heavens, And

every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and

every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD

God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and

there was not a man to till the ground. But there went

up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face

of the ground. And the LORD God formed man of

the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrilsthe breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:4 -7

3. Man’s creation was superior to

man’s making. In Genesis 2: 7, the word used

to describe the making of man is the word formed.

This in the original sense means squeeze into form

or beaten to take a shape. At creation, the form or

shape of man was concluded but at making, the

shape of man began to emerge.

4. Man’s Creation was from

nothing but his making is from

something.  Genesis 1: 27 never mentioned

any material thing at the point of man’s creation. It

simply stated So God created man. But in chapter

2:7 we saw that man actually has the same

fundamental component like the animals that

also came from the ground, but his was with adivine touch. Man did not just spring forth from

the ground like the animals; God actually put

together the soil out of which man was formed.

5. Man’s creation was all of God-

entirely divine, but his making was not -

he has a natural content. All of what took place at

creation was God dependent. But at the making

other factors came into the picture. His views werenot sought as to what he will be, his maker

decided it. But in his journey towards the already

decided, his views and consent are mandatory for

them to be realised.

6. Man’s creation was before time,

but his making was in time. The creation of

man actually took place in the mind of the most

high. And God dwells in the realms where there isno time. But the making of man took place in the

region where all things are influenced by time.

7

Page 8: Jan2010 swrd

7. Man’s creation was instant, but

man’s making was gradual. Though with

one word God proclaimed that man has been

created and so it was. His emergence was

however a gradual process - a process that took

time and involved other materials. The createdman is the man in the mind of God. As to when he

occurred to God, none of us knows, but one truth

is certain, his birth was not the beginning of his

existence, he has been before birth.

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and

before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified

thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

 Jeremiah 1: 5

And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him,

whose names are not written in the book of life of the

Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Revelations 13:8

Beyond man being tripartite, man also has

a dual existence. Meaning, before he appearedhere on earth, he had been concluded in the mind

of God. Man’s story did not begin at conception

but far before conception. The journey for us all

actually began before the foundation of the earth.

The latter scripture quoted above (Revelations

13:8) noted that before the foundation of the

world some activities took place. Where there was

yet to a world, a lamb was slain.

Man is not a creature of chance as Darwinwould like us to believe. What ever you see here

on earth is the making process of a being that was

created long before there was a location called

earth.

Man is not just a spirit like the angels;

neither is he a fleshly being like the animals. He is

superior to both ends and his destiny and final

destination is different from that of both. He is not

just from heaven; he is equally from the earth.

The Implication

A MORE SURE WORD  VOL. 13 NO. 1

As much as he is heavenly so is he earthly. A part

of him came from the realm invisible but also

another part came from the realm visible. It was

however not the visible that came first but the

invisible. It was not the visible that defined the

invisible but the invisible defined the form andshape of the visible.

I have observed with amazement, that in

the spiritual/religious circles, man is constantly

trying to deny his being of the earth. To be earthly

is not synonymous with being worldly. To be

earthly is normal but to be worldly is evil. It is not

wrong to be earthy because this earth remains the

one valid territory that God ceded to man and not

heaven. Earth talks of a location, but world talksof a lifestyle. Though we use the two

interchangeably, they are quite different.

What is man? A being with a dual

existence and a tripartite nature, before he ever

appeared on earth, God has concluded who he is

meant to be, he is not just a bundle of flesh like the

animals but a being that has an eternal, immortalspirit. It is only when we live with this mindset that

we can truly maximise life. Our life did not begin

on the day we were born. Long before then, there

was a script written that we were born to act out.

Lord, I thank you for my life today. Thank

you because as a man I did not just

happen by chance. I am a being veryimportant to you and your kingdom.

Today I open up my self to you

and your Holy Spirit. Connect me back

with the thoughts that you have of me

before the foundation of the world.

Thank you because I am not a wanderer

on this great planet, neither am I a

concern to the rest of humanity.

By the light of your word, I takemy place as a blessing to everyone you

have destined my life to touch. In Jesus

name. Amen

TIMERUNNING

OUT?

ISBy Billy Graham

ore than 75 years ago Henry Lucewanted a name, in just one word, for aMweekly newsmagazine that would

describe the passing events of the day. He chosethe word time. The Bible says, “The days of ourlives are seventy years” (Psalm 90:10, NKJV).

Time is a mystery. We sense its passing in ourconsciousness. We measure its progress withdelicately adjusted instruments. We mark its flightand read the record it leaves behind. But the onething we cannot do is define it.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote:“What is time? The shadow on the dial, thestriking of the clock, the running of the sand, dayand night, summer and winter, months, years, centuries—these are but arbitrary and outward

signs, the measure of time, not time itself.”Modern science attempts to define time.Sometimes it is set forth by abstract mathematicalformulas, sometimes by the analysis of dreams, sometimes as a fourth dimension added to space.

The Bible teaches that time and life are tiedtogether. It seems that the whole universe isorganized for measuring time. Nature is like ahuge clockmaker’s shop in which thousands oftimepieces are ticking. Pulse beats indicate the

fleeting moments; the rotation of the earth marksthe passing of day and night; the phases of themoon, the moving on of the months; therevolutions of the planets, the march of the years.

Geology studies the wrinkles written bytime on earth’s brow. Astronomy studies theclockwork of the heavens. Archaeology, peeringabout among the relics of the ancient past, tracesthe footprints of time in the ages gone by.

At this time of year we speak of Father Time

and visualize an old man with a long white beardwho is holding a scythe in one hand and anhourglass in the other hand. But time is a thief.Time steals strength from our muscles and youthfrom our faces. Time robs us of our health andstrips us at last of everything that we have.

The Meaning of Time to ChristiansTo the Christian, time has a moral

significance and a spiritual meaning. Let us

consider time in three ways.First, time is a trust. What are we doing

with it? Are we frittering it away, letting it slipthrough our fingers, squandering it in wantonwaste? Or are we treasuring it, using it tomaximum advantage, filling every minute with 60seconds’ worth of service to God? The ApostlePaul counsels us to “redeem the time” (Cf.Ephesians 5:16). Time cannot be relived; it canonly be redeemed. Let us treat time as a trust.

Second, time is a test. Suppose I were toask you what you propose to do at 1 o’clockyesterday. You would think I had lost my mind. Youmight reply, “Don’t be silly. I cannot decide what I

Time in itself is neither good nor bad except as we

make it so. But it becomes a crucial test, sifting usthrough and through, minute by minute.

A MORE SURE WORD  VOL. 13 NO. 1 9

Page 10: Jan2010 swrd

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/jan2010-swrd 10/24

shall do at 1 o’clock yesterday, because I’vealready decided that issue.”

But suppose I were to ask you, “What doyou propose to do at 1 o’clock tomorrow?” Youmight answer, “I may do this, or I may do that.”

Time past is time over which we have no

power, but time to come lays upon each one ofus the possibility of moral and spiritual choices.

As life goes on, there are billions ofevents happening in every moment of historictime. To those billions of events we contributeour quotas. What is the next contribution thatyou will make? In the next instant you can tell alie or commit other sins, or you can choose touse that time to serve God and to lay uptreasures for eternity.

Time in itself is neither good nor badexcept as we make it so. But it becomes acrucial test, sifting us through and through, minute by minute.

How are you reacting to that test? How doesit affect you? Are you growing daily in the grace andknowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18)?Do you take advantage of every opportunity tostudy the Scriptures and to pray? Do you takeadvantage of every opportunity to witness to Jesus

Christ?Third, time is an appointment. Time has

been given to us for the purpose of glorifying God inthis life. Time has been given to us to  have anencounter with the living God. However famous aperson may be, or however great his wealth, orwhatever his contribution to literature or science, ifhe has not come into a vital conversion experiencewith Jesus Christ, then that person has lived in vain.

Thus time is an appointment with Christ, and the Bible says, “Now is the accepted time”   (2Corinthians 6:2, NKJV). God has given us amoment in which we can come to know His SonJesus Christ. We can come out of time and entereternity with Him. From now on, everything we docan be done with eternity in view.

A story has been told about a party of menshipwrecked and adrift in a small boat on a stormysea in the mid-Atlantic Ocean. After floating for

several days, the men one night saw the light of apassing ship. But how could they attract theattention of those on the ship? How could theymake them aware of their desperate plight? Theyhad a lantern—but only one match.

Someone in the boat had to accept theresponsibility of striking that one match. Thatsolitary match was all that stood between them andthe liner that was steaming by. What was to bedone? They decided to cast lots, and the heavy

responsibility fell upon the youngest sailor. With a prayer on his lips and with trembling

fingers, he struck the match. For a moment theflame flickered as though it would go out. Shieldingthe match with his cupped hands, the young sailorput it through the open door of the lantern, lit thestub of the candle and quickly closed the door. Onthe liner the lookout man spotted the light andinformed the captain, and soon the men weresaved.

Amid the stormy seas of life and against thebackground of eternity, the present moment flickerslike the flicker of that lighted match. What will youdo with your moment?

Everything that happens in this world happens atthe time God chooses.

He sets the time for birth and the time for death, the time for planting and the time for pulling up,the time for killing and the time for healing, thetime for tearing down and the time for building. He sets the time for sorrow and the time for joy,

the time for mourning and the time for dancing, the time for making love and the time for not

making love, the time for kissing and the time fornot kissing.

He sets the time for finding and the time forlosing, the time for saving and the time for

throwing away, the time for tearing and the time for mending, the

time for silence and the time for talk.He sets the time for love and the time for hate, the

time for war and the time for peace.... He has set the right time for everything.

Ebenezer Erskine wrote that in thesummer of 1708, he “got his head out oftime into eternity.” That was the hour thathe accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. That hour was his existential moment, hislife’s crowning instant. Will you keep

your appointment with Jesus Christ?

As the world moves from crisis tocrisis, a moment will come on God’sclock, and that hour is about to strike. The Bible tells us that the end will comebut that the end also will be thebeginning. When Jesus Christ comesagain, it will be the end of this world’ssystem of evil and the beginning ofGod’s reign throughout the earth.

But before that hour strikes, ourworld is in for crisis after crisis. There willbe wars and rumors of wars, revolutionsand riots everywhere. People will betrayeach other as the deceitfulness of theirh e a r t s c o m e s o u t i n t o t h eopen—crucifying Jesus Christ afresh.

The hour is late. The time iscoming when people will call upon God,but they will not hear an answer. They willlook for God, but they will not find him(Proverbs 1:28).

Today is your day of salvation (2Corinthians 6:2). Today you can acceptJesus Christ as your Savior. You can putyour faith, your trust and your confidencein Him. He will change your dimension

of time and put you into eternity withHim.

phrase some believers constantly volley back and forth is “Godtold me...” Usually the people who use this spiritual sounding A phrase don’t like to be quizzed on the details of exactly how

God spoke to them. Why? Because when you look at the source oftheir revelation, it often lacks either good common sense or biblicaljustification.

When we rely on sources other than Scripture for truth, weare casting our lives upon a sea of uncertainty. Feelings, circumstance, stars, these all fluctuate. And to trust in them is to openourselves to being seriously deluded and led into error. God’s writtenword, however, never changes and when propoerly applied, will never

lead anyone into error.  Charles Swindoll  Conquering Through Conflict

ust as eighteenth-century Europe needed leaders, our changing world needsleaders today. By next year at this time, there will be ninety million more peopleJon this planet than there are today. Who will lead them? Will their leaders

develop them or destroy them? Will these leaders improve our world or imperil ourglobal village? India’s annual net increase (birth over deaths) exceeds the totalpopulation of Australia. What kind of leadership will these millions of people have?

Will the leaders of these new citizens of the world be honorable orcorrupt? Self-sacrificing or self aggrandizing? Humble or haughty? Will the newleaders be like Adolf Hitler, the dictator of Germany, or like Han Kyung Chik, theChristian statesman of Korea? Will they be like Al Capone, the gangster ofChicago, or John Calvin, the theologian of Geneva? Will they be like Nero, theoppressor, or Paul, the apostle?

The population explosion is frightening and real and is one cause of thecrisis of leadership.

mong the tragedies of the past decade is the large number of scandals involvingmen in high profile leadership positions. These scandals have rocked all sectors A of public life-politics, business, and even religion. People who were trusted to

manage large operations proved untrustworthy. They allowed greed and personalinterest to sway their judgement, and they lost everything.

The Apostle Paul made it clear to Timothy that anyone who want to be aleader must continually demonstrate strong character and moral behavior. Their valuesare reflected in every aspect of their lives. If you wish to receive the blessings of the

kingdom, then, clearly you must take this principle to heart and live it. If you wantresponsibility, you must accept accountability.Pat Robertson - 700 Club

t one time or another, we’ve all done it. We’ve paced the floor worryingabout some seemingly insurmountable problem. We’ve tossed and turnedA all night, wondering what we’re going to do. We’ve run in circles until

t the opening of every new year we hear many exciting wordsfrom different people. Some are religious leaders while

A others are political gladiators. Broadly these words falls intotwo categories - wishes and His word.

Wishes are humanly generated words, desirable, appealing and often soothing. They are expressions of goodfortunes - such as is found on the lips of soothsayers. But thesewords has neither a womb nor a wing. They hence cannot bringforth the joy and pleasantness you really long for or bear you overand across the Jordan that is swelling before your very eyes.

God’s word however is His commitment, His bond, His

his is a true saying: If a man is eager to be a church leader, he desires anexcellent work. A church leader must be without fault; he must have onlyT one wife, be sober, self-controlled, and orderly; he must welcome strangers

in his home; he must be able to teach; he must not be a drunkard or a violentman, but gentle and peaceful; he must not love money; he must be able tomanage his own family well and make his children obey him with all respect. For if a man does not know how to manage his own family, how can he takecare of the church of God? He must be mature in the faith, so that he will not swell up with pride and be condemned, as the Devil was. He should be a manwho is respected by the people outside the church, so that he will not bedisgraced and fall into the Devil's trap.

What Would

Jesus Eat?F YOU EAT LIKE MOST PEOPLE, YOU ARELIVING your life in the fast lane and rarelyItaking time to relax, wind down and enjoy a

meal. Rather than making dining a pleasantexperience, you may wolf your food down as you

drive or as you sit in front of the TV.Instead of eating in a rushed, stressedand pressured manner, try eating the way Jesusate, in a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere, surrounded with friends, laughing, conversing, and enjoying life—but always start by blessingthe food. This is not only biblical; it also helps torelax our minds and bodies in preparation forreceiving food.

First of all, it is important that you starteach day with a healthy breakfast. I have been

telling my patients for years to eat breakfast likea king, lunch like a prince and dinner like apauper. I highly recommend that you never skipbreakfast, since your body needs the food tokeep your metabolic rate up, which helps toprevent obesity. As you go through the rest of theday, ask yourself, What Would Jesus Eat?

Are you willing to make a commitment tofollow Jesus’ example and eat the way He ate?The eating habits that were the foundation ofJesus’ diet were: choosing untampered,nutrient-dense foods; avoiding foods that havebeen processed or refined; choosing food thatare in their natural, fresh state.

by Dr. Don Colbert

 Appetizers

Soup and Salads

Appetizers should be served before the meal oras a light snack throughout the day. They help take theedge off hunger. Appetizers can help you wind downbefore you eat, eliminating much of the stress of your

daily lifestyle. Most people eat a full meal in ten minutes,so you often have overeaten before your body has beenable to signal you that you are full, since it takes abouttwenty minutes for this to occur.

Soups were a vital part of the foods that wereeaten during the days of Jesus. Soup would usuallyconstitute the entire meal and contained beans, legumes, lentils, vegetables, garlic and onions. Peopleoften ate bread with their soup. Grains and beans are

incomplete proteins by themselves. However, whengrains and beans are combined, they then become acomplete protein, supplying all of the essential aminoacids. The protein sources consumed primarily duringthe days of Jesus were fish, chicken and lamb.

Salads are commonly consumed in Israel as wellas other Mediterranean countries. Instead of iceberglettuce, which has a very low nutrient value and is void offiber, make your salads with rich, dark-green saladleaves and bright, contrasting, colorful vegetables.Salad dressing in Jesus’ day was made of extra virginolive oil mixed with flavorful vinegars like balsamic, apple cider or red wine vinegar. To create a robust, tangyflavor, add lemon juice, garlic, salt and other herbs.

Bread, Rice and Pasta

Meat

Bread was astaple food duringthe days of Jesus. Infact, Jesus taughtus to pray in theLord’s Prayer, give

us this day our dailybread. The two most

common grains used inthe Bible were whole grain wheat and barley. Inchoosing bread today it is critically important thatyou choose whole grain breads instead of refinedwhite bread. During the process to make whiteflour, approximately 80 percent of the nutrients areremoved. Whole grains can even improve thedigestion process. When you choose pasta select

whole grain pasta and brown rice.

Fish was the most common protein sourcefor Jesus. People would grill, bake or stew meatinstead of frying it, and they added fresh herbs,

onions and garlic to impart arobust flavor. Remember,

though, that Jesus wouldprobably only haveeaten small portions of

meat—about two tofour ounces per serving. If

you can’t say no to red meat,I strongly recommend that you eat

fewer portions of red meat per month, make surethe meat has been trimmed of fat, choose extralean and range-fed meats, store the meat in thecoldest part of the refrigerator and use it within twoto five days of purchase. Ground beef andsausage should be thrown out after two days..

Cooked meat should not be left outside therefrigerator for longer than two hours. Limit yourmeat to only 3 to 6 oz. per meal.

 Vegetables

Fruit and Other Sweet Treats

W h e n e v e rpossible, I suggestthat you eat locallyg r o w n , o r g a n i cproduce. One thingthat people discoverwhen they begin toeat the way Jesus ateis that they enjoy thetaste of fresh food asnever before. It is time to move away from foods thatare laden with salt, sugar, additives, hydrogenated fatsand begin enjoying whole, fresh foods.

Many people choose to opt for desserts like

chocolate cake, icecream, key limepie, apple pie orsome other form ofc a k e , p i e o rcookie. People inb i b l i c a l t i m e swould eat sweetdesserts only at

times of feasts, suchas wedd i ngs and

celebrations—and only insmall amounts. Desserts would

consis t pr imar i l y of f ru i t ,occasionally some nuts and possibly a little honey. Fruitwas a main staple in the diet of Jesus. It is best tochoose fresh, organic fruits. If organic is not available, simply scrub fruit gently with a mild detergent. Each ofus must take a new look at why we choose to eat whatwe eat. Rather than continue our mindless, unconscious habits, we need to be intentional and

rational about what we choose to put into our bodies.Jesus is our perfect example for every area of ourlife—choose to eat like Jesus.

And the king appointed them a daily provision of theking's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so

the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.Daniel 1: 5, 8

Be Angry ,

but...

Dear Nephew,Thanks again for keeping me up to date with all

the preparations towards your forthcoming wedding.I’m glad to hear your mother has also come around toagree with your future in-laws over the matter of thevenue. Sometimes it’s just incredible how we allow

issues which we will hardly remember in a year’s time tosoil our relationships today. This point is particularly aptat this time in your life as you prepare to start a family.

However, Rufus, I was not particularly pleased tohear the anger in your voice towards Ada when wespoke on the phone last week. Don’t get me wrong, Iam not saying you do not have a reason to be angrywith your fiancée, I’m just simply asking you to get overit. Getting angry is not a problem, it is staying angry andwhat one does during anger that is the issue. Listen toanother one of my wisdom nuggets as you call them(Ephesians 4:26-27):

Go ahead and be angry. You do well to beangry—but don’t use your anger as fuel for revenge. And

don’t stay angry. Don’t go to bed angry. Don’t give the Devilthat kind of foothold in your life

Those words were written by the Apostle Paul tothe Ephesians. How long ago did you find out she had

spent the money? Over a month ago! And you’re stillseething with anger – a month later? Surely that’s a bitexcessive, isn’t it?

At the risk of appearing to be preaching to you(well actually, I am preaching aren’t I) I will sum upPaul’s words of caution as:

· Be angry, but never act in anger · Don’t stay angry. The real person anger hurts

is you so get over things quickly.· All human passions, anger included, are

useful but they also have the possibility ofopening our lives up to forces we’d rather doWithout.

If you have ever watched a blacksmith at workyou will realise that it is easier to strike and change theshape of metal when it is hot. But one must be preparedto live with the new shape when the metal cools. So it iswith acting in anger, if you strike whilst you’re hot, youhave to live with the consequences afterwards. Anotherwise man said:

Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for angerresides in the lap of fools.

If you don’t already realise this, know now thatfew things affect the dynamic of a relationship in theway that money does. Becoming angry doesn’t solveanything. What lessons has that incident thought youabout the differences in the attitudes and values bothof you have in relation to money. If anything, the fact

you’re still annoyed tells me you’re not trying tounderstand why Ada acted as she did and what it saysabout what is important to her.

One of my favourite passages of the bible isProverbs 31. It talks about the qualities of anunforgettable woman. You’d do well to read thispassage. Sometime ago I realised that almost all thequalities mentioned relate to the management offinancial resources. I was about to start judging mywife against these qualities when it struck me thatbefore listing the virtues of this unforgettable woman, the author wrote these words (Proverbs 31:11):

The heart of her husband trusts in her confidently andrelies on and believes in her securely, so that he has no

lack of [honest] gain or need of [dishonest] spoil.

If you’re like me, you would want it to say: ‘shemakes her husband rely on and believe in her

securely…’ But notice it is him who chooses to trust…confidently, rely on and believe securely. I agree thatsuch confidence is the end result of a woman provingherself prudent but it is also the starting point for suchprudence. My experience has been that the more youaffirm your belief in the abilities of a charge (whetheremployee, child or spouse) the more likely you are tosee them perform to their potential. So, son, don’t getangry, get coaching. Ok?

Tell your mother I’d be in Abuja next month on

a business trip. I find business is picking up graduallyhere in the Netherlands but the events of the last yearhave shown me I need to start building a client baseback home in Nigeria too. So, I’ve got a couple ofmeetings next month but I’m only staying for twonights. So if I can’t see her next month, let’s wait tillwhen Amina and I come in March for your wedding.

I’m looking forwards to seeing many membersof the family again when we come in March. Pleasesend my love to Ada. As always, you’re both in my

EADERS ARE FAMILIAR WITH GOALS.They are driven by them. Their changeLe f f o r t s a r e b e n t t o w a r d s

accomplishing them. Goals make leadershiptick. Periodically, leaders sit down; think hard, size up the future to design goals that will helpensure realisation of the bottom line andfulfilment of the organisation’s mission.Goals are stated ambitions; and all leadersknow they must set them and follow them uptill they are accomplished. For, failure to setgoals reduces leadership to management bychance and hunches – a sure recipe forcorporate disaster.

The benefits of goal setting arenumerous; but I will outline a few here.

*Definition:  Goals help define anorganisation’s mission and concretise itsvision drive. Your organisation’s socialarchitecture is partly defined and describedby the goals you set and pursue. Yourleadership too is rated and characterisedaccording to the goals you accomplish.Simply, people know your organisation’smission and rate what you’re doing at the

helm by the visions (goals) you pursue. Thus, with neither goals nor vision, your leadershipand organisation are essentially withoutidentity.

Setting &Scoring your

Goals * Direction: As products of visioning, goalshelp provide direction for an organisation. The over-arching purpose of leadership is to influence andmaintain progressive change. But change is an end-product of realised goals in a particular direction. Thus, if you say you’re moving your organisation up,your staff and the public would be itching to know thedirection you’re heading in. It’s your goals that tellthem the way. Where no goals exist, there will be nosense of direction, no challenge and nothing to aimat. Consequently, workers become glued to norm andthe organisation stagnates.

* Drive: Goals help the workforce know whatthe organisation is aiming at; and if this knowledge iscoupled with appropriate motivation, aggregate

productivity invariably improves. Thus, goalsindirectly infuse the workforce with the drive for betterperformances. Leaders looking for an elixir to curepervasive sloth at the workplace should try goalsetting and chasing.

* Diversity:  Goals can introduce diversityinto an organisation’s fossilised work culture. Thepursuit of new goals necessarily demands change inprogrammes and work-style, and the introduction of

new production process, programmes, materials, machines and, probably, personnel. Colour andvariety are marks of an organisation in sincere pursuitof specific goals.

Page 19: Jan2010 swrd

8/17/2019 Jan2010 swrd

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/jan2010-swrd 19/24

* Discovery:  Goal setting can helpreveal the limits of your organisation and yourown leadership. The elephant may not know it hasno wings until it attempts to fly. Yourorganisation’s strengths and weaknesses come tothe fore when you attempt to swim against the tideof norm towards a goal that takes your net-worthto a new height. Leaders who periodically setgoals, review and pursue them have a realisticrating of their organisation’s capabilities and theirown competencies. Those who don’t set goalswork with a distorted view of whom and what theyand their organisations are!

* Development:  Your organisation

cannot develop without your setting goals andrealising them. Development is the cumulativeeffects of goals set and realised. Leaders ofsuccessful world-class organisations are goal-oriented.

* Description: Goals help describe anorganisation’s successes. In establishments wherethings happen effortlessly, success is neithercelebrated nor appreciated because it’s neither

sought nor paid for. But where goals are set andtheir impact measured, the organisation hassomething to flaunt and the leader has a reasonto cheer.

Pitfalls of goal settingNot all goals are “scored”. Both corporate

and political leaders are familiar with painfulmisses, when goals end in mirage. Africa isacquainted with rain clouds of development

plans that simply dissolve in the tempestuous windof transitory governance. Leaders fail to reachtheir goals because the goals aren’t SMART. Thatmeans they aren’t: S-specific; M-measurable; A-achievable; R-realistic; T-time-bound.

First, a goal should be specific, expressed in clear unequivocal terms. It should belimited to one-shot one-track target(s). Forexample, a goal such as “education for all by year2050” is too general, too multi-faceted to be

realised. You would need to fire many shots andplough through many tracks in a futile attempt tohit that target.

Second, they should be measurable. Yourgoal must lend itself to incremental measuringafter it has been accomplished. There’s no otherway to know that the attainment of a goal has

impacted the organisation positively but bymeasuring the quality and quantity of the resultantchange.

Third, the goals should be achievable. Authentic leadership doesn’t cloud goal setting byembarking on a wild goose chase. You’reengaged in self-delusion if you pursue vaultingambitions that your competencies andorganisation’s resources can’t secure and hold.

Fourth, goals have to be realistic or theywill end up as wishful thinking. Yes, goal settingisn’t a game of ideals. Facts are needed toconceive and birth ambitions. Of course, chutzpah is necessary but active faith in effectiveleadership isn’t a blind jump.

Fifth, goals must be time-bound. Theremust be a time frame for accomplishing all setgoals. Otherwise, corporate commitment andfidelity to the objectives of the goals will belacking. There won’t be any sense of urgencyneeded to galvanise the workforce and movethem to bend their backs in service in order torealise the goal(s). Thus, goals set without a time-frame fade away and are jettisoned by and by.

Discipline:

The Path to PotentialE MAY HAVE BEEN THE MOST naturallygifted baseball player of all time. HeHwas clocked rounding the bases in an

incredible 13 seconds. Yet, his speed was nothingcompared to the power of his hitting. It’s beensaid there were home run hitters, and then therewas this man - in a league of his own. The

Guinness Book of World Records credits him withhitting the longest home run ever measured, at643 feet.

The player I’m describing is the greatMickey Mantle. By the age of 19 he had beencalled up to play for the New York Yankees. Hewon a World Series his rookie year, and his teamswould capture seven championships over thecourse of his career. By the time he retired, Mantlehad played more games as a Yankee than any

other player, and had been named MVP of the American League three times. He still holds theall-time World Series records for home runs, runsscored, and runs batted in.

Yet , in sp i te o f h i s impress iveaccomplishments, experts believe Mickey Mantlenever reached his potential. Most blame Mantle’schronic knee injuries for preventing him fromdoing more. But injuries weren’t the root of theproblem. What most people didn’t know was thatMantle was a raging alcoholic.

At age 62, with his health and family life amess, Mantle checked into the Betty Ford Clinicand started the long road to sobriety. Lookingback from this vantage point, he assessed hiscareer:

I never fulfilled what my dad had wanted[to be the greatest player who ever lived], and I

should have. God gave me a great body to playwith, and I didn’t take care of it. And I blame a lotof it on alcohol.

Everybody tries to make the excuse thatinjuries shortened my career. Truth is, after I’d hada knee operation the doctors would give merehab work to do, but I wouldn’t do it. I’d be outdrinking... I hurt my knees through the years, and Ijust thought they’d naturally come back.Everything has always come natural to me. I didn’t

work hard at it.Despite his great natural talent, Mickey

Mantle never disciplined himself off the field. Bythe time Mantle was ready to change, it was toolate. His liver was ruined from a life of alcoholism, and he died at age 64 from inoperable cancer.

Four Truths about DisciplineWhat were you born to do? What is your

dream? To become the person you have thepotential to be, you have to cultivate a life ofdiscipline. Consider these truths concerningdiscipline:

Discipline Comes with a Price TagDiscipline is costly. It demands a continual

investment of time, energy, and commitment atthe expense of momentary pleasure and ease.Discipline means paying hours of practice to winthe prize of skill. Discipline means giving up short-

term benefits for the hope of future gain.Discipline means pressing on to excellence longafter everyone else has settled for average.

Discipline Turns Talent to GreatnessWhen you read about someone like

Mickey Mantle, you realize that too much talentcan actually work against someone. Super-talented individuals can coast on sheer ability andneglect building the daily habits of success thatwill sustain them. Poet Henry WadsworthLongfellow shared much insight when he wrote:

The heights by great men reached and keptWere not attained by sudden flight,But they, while their companions slept,Were toiling upward in the night.

If you want to reach your potential, attach a

strong work ethic to your talent.

Discipline Focuses on Choices, NotConditionsIn general, people approach daily

discipline in one of two ways. They focus on theexternal or the internal. Those who focusexternally allow conditions to dictate whether ornot they remain disciplined. Because conditionsare transitory, their discipline level changes like

the wind.

In contrast, people with internaldiscipline focus on choices. You cannot controlcircumstances, nor can you control others. By

focusing on your choices, and making the rightones regularly, you stay disciplined.

Discipline Does Not Bow Down toFeelings

As Arthur Gordon said, “Nothing is easierthan saying words. Nothing is harder than livingthem, day after day. What you promise todaymust be renewed and redecided tomorrow andeach day that stretches out before you.”

If you do what you should only when youreally feel like it, then you won’t build disciplinedhabits. At times, you have to act contrary toemotions. If you refuse to give into your lesserimpulses, no matter how great they will make youfeel in the moment, then you’ll go far.

SummaryDiscipline is a matter of taking total

responsibility for your future. Choose not toblame circumstances for the outcome of your life.

Choose to go beyond your natural talent. Chooseto make wise decisions repeatedly. Choosediscipline as the path to your potential.
