St. Baldrick’s Jane Ryan Team Make It Amazing

March 14th 6-8pmEvery year, thousands of brave men, women and children have joined St. Baldrick’s Foundation in

support of childhood cancer research. We invite you to make a “bald” statement and join the Jane Ryan community in an evening of giving.

KOOLValentine Card Making for seniors will be held after school on Thursday, February 8th! Sign up flyer will be sent home.

“Bridge to Bridgeport” is also happening for Valentine’s Day! Our students can share with Bridgeport students by donating school supplies. A giving tree will be located in the school lobby from February 1st - 9th. Stop in and help your child choose a heart to be a part of this Valen-tine’s Day outreach.

If you are unable to get to school, please fill out the flyer that will be sent home. Or, return the below information to school in an envelope marked “Bridge to Bridgeport”. Either way, a heart will be sent home. All supplies are due back to school by February 13th.

Any questions regarding KOOL events and activities? Please contact Anne Marie Martini, KOOL chairperson, with any questions, at: [email protected].

Newsworthy Happenings

Father’s Club helps the School Library Buy New Books Students at Jane Ryan might not always notice the impact the Jane Ryan Father’s Club has on their school year. There are many events throughout the year, such as the Back-to-School Barbecue, the monthly Movie Nights and the annual Super Bowl Pancake Breakfast that are run by our Dads volunteering for the school. These events allow the Father’s Club to collect funds, which in turn are donated 100% back to the school. “We volunteer our time to help with the things that school budgets can’t cover. We love to help because it is all for our kids.”

Most recently, thanks to a recent motion at the January monthly meeting, the Father’s Club learned the school library could not purchase new books due to statewide and local budget cuts. It was proposed to donate $1,000.00 to help buy new books for Mrs. Zimmer and the kids. The motion was enthusiastically received by the Father’s Club and passed unanimously. This is just one example of how we support the school.

Donations from the Father’s Club have also helped fund the School’s upcoming Makerspace Lab, which will replace the computer room and allow the children a much more exciting interactive space during school hours. Other items recently completed were replacing the School’s water fountains with ones that let the kids refill their water bottles easily and helping to upgrade the school Gym mats.

Teachers know to ask the Father’s Club for help with things that fall outside the school budget. Requests for rolling teacher stools (that let the teachers roll amongst the students) wobbly seats and standing desks (that allow students move in the classroom) have been happily funded by the Father’s Club.

Future plans include two new benches for the main playground and the possibility of upgrading some of the outdoor basketball equipment. In the meantime, the Father’s Club is happy to support making Jane Ryan a better place for the kids, teachers, and community.

If anyone would like to volunteer their time to help with the Father’s Club please email us at [email protected]. The Father’s Club Super Bowl Pancake Breakfast, being held at Jane Ryan the morning of Super Bowl Sunday, February 4, is also looking for volunteers. The Pancake Breakfast needs volunteers to work the kitchen, take orders, deliver food, and clean-up. Volunteers are also needed for help with the games and ticket sales. Lots of hands make the project go smoothly. A great time is guaranteed for all and anyone is welcome to sign up and help.

If you cannot volunteer at the Super Bowl Pancake Breakfast, the Father’s Club has additional opportunities in the future. February 23 is the next Father’s Club Movie Night in which help is needed setting up, selling refreshments, and with clean up. To find out about other upcoming projects come to the next Father’s Club meeting to be held at 7:30 pm on February 8 in the Jane Ryan Library. All are welcome.

At Jane Ryan Elementary School, students practice Jane Ryan Pride. To show Lion Pride is to:

Be Respectful, Encourage Others, Do Your BestJane Ryan students have been very busy during the past few months!

On Election Day, students voted on grade-level choices for activities

or materials for their classroom funded by money from the Walk-a-

Thon. Fifth grade student council members took turns helping stu-

dents navigate the Jane Ryan polls by giving the directions, helping

students fill out ballots correctly and handing

out “I Voted” stickers. Students also at-

tended a school-wide Lion’s Den

meeting where they learned that

ALL classes met their goal on their PRIDE Pads! Grade lev-

els earned rewards such as movie day and pajama day. Leo

the Lion celebrated with us too! We look forward to holding

more activities to celebrate our Jane Ryan PRIDE including

school-wide BINGO. Please continue to talk with your chil-

dren about showing their Jane Ryan PRIDE and catch them

doing so! It makes for great dinner conversation.

Some Fun

Did you know… When a porcupine is born, its quills are soft. They get hard about an hour later.

I Love You More Than Applesauce – Jack Prelutsky

I love you more than apple-sauce,Than peaches and a plum,Than chocolate hearts,And cherry tarts,And berry bubble-gum.I love you more than lemonade,And seven-layer cake,Than lollipops,And candy drops,And thick vanilla shake.I love you more than marzipan,Than marmalade on toast; For I love piesOf any size,But I love you the most.

I Made My Dog a Valentine – Jack Prelutsky

I made my dog a valentine, she sniffed it very hard, then chewed on it a little whileand left it in the yard.

I made one for my parakeets,a pretty paper heart, they pulled it with their claws and beaksuntil it ripped apart.

I made one for my turtle, all he did was get it wet,I wonder if a valentineis wasted on a pet.

– UnknownOut of a snow cloud, cold and gray,Something dropped on St. Valentine’s Day,Whirling and twirling and soft and light,Like wee little letters all dainty and white,And I guess the sky children were sending down,

This Valentine straight to the children in town.

It sells school supplies and fun novelty items with prices ranging from $.10 for cap erasers to $3.50 for Jane Ryan magnets. Your children can “shop” for these items during their lunchtime. And, since cupcakes and treats are no longer allowed in the classroom, many families have chosen to celebrate school birthdays and special occasions with Store Bucks. Bucks are available for pre-purchase in $.50 and $1.00 increments and may be purchased for grades 1-5 through June 2018.

Fill out the order form below and send it into school with your child in an envelope labeled Mrs. Sloan, Store Bucks. Checks should be made out to Jane Ryan PTA. We will send your Store Bucks home with your child. Any questions, please contact Jenn Chiodo at [email protected].
