Speaker: Jane Tenorio-Coscarelli
Topic: Quilt-a-Beast
Workshop: Sugar Skulls and Coffee Girls
Our September speaker is Jane Tenorio-Coscarelli. She is a freelance artist
who has combined her artistic talent and love of quilting to create 1/4 Inch
Publishing. For the past 20 years, she has successfully designed and produced her product
line of books, patterns, fabrics and notions.
Jane has published, The Tortilla Quilt, The Ants/Las Hormigas, The Tamale Quilt, The Piñata Quilt, The Burrito Boy, and Confetti Eggs /Cascarones. Along with many other
patterns available on her website: quarterinchpublishing.com
She has been featured in “How to Make an American Quilt”, Vista L.A.(KABC affiliate), Simply Quilts (HGTV), Hispanic Lifestyle, Latina, Westways, Quiltmaker, Quilting Professional, Fabric Trends, Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine, and Library Media Connection, who in March of 2004 declared Tenorio-Coscarelli one of the “100 History-Making Ethnic Women.”
Jane has recently joined a creative team of studio designers to create fabric lines that represent her Latin heritage.

Hoping for a
Happy Season!
My favorite time of the year is fall -- unless
it’s on my front walkway underfoot. I have
two huge trees that keep me raking for a
couple of months. But it’s good exercise,
and I love trees and leaves, and anyone
who looks at the quilts in my life would
know that. Lots of leaves in my quilts. It’s
the home stretch of the year, too, the time
for college football and crockpot dinners,
and maybe a night or two when you have
to think about whether you might have to
turn the heat on. And time to get back in the sewing studio because the sun isn’t out, and it’s not
85 degrees in there!
It’s probably my favorite time to sew. The projects are lined up to finish, and to start, to select
the fabric for, and to decide who gets what for Christmas. I get to hustle off to the mountains to
sew uninterrupted for four days straight too! It is all very fulfilling.
You are all very fulfilling as well. After my family tragedy I felt so much support from so many of
you. Scores of cards and notes and phone calls came my way, meaningful hugs without words,
because what can I say? Just a sincere thank you! As I get my bearings back, and launch an
unexpected new phase of life as a much more needed cog in the wheels of my motherless
grandchildren, I am fulfilled and thankful for my Guild friends -- many of whom, like me, turn to
needle and thread for comfort and appreciate how the clean
fresh air of this season can bolster our spirits.
Happy sewing.
XO
Gayle

Over the Top –Nancy Post
This month President Gayle stitched up a silly owl for Nancy Post,
who is an integral part of our newsletter process. Think about our
newsletter if there were no photos! It would not be the entertaining
publication it is! And Nancy has been doing it for five years!!!
Everybody with a Show and Tell Quilt gets on Nancy’s “X” and
the result is their name and quilt in posterity on the website. She
never complains, always shows up, smiles throughout and does a
wonderful job, and it’s a shame we couldn’t fill that owl with
money or fabric because she deserves it.
And, in August she provided us with the end of our running joke
about the “Book.” With the era of scrapbooks just about gone in
this digital world, she put together a wonderful book of photos
from Mary Stockard’s 2013 term as president. It held many beauti-
ful pages of memories in a hard bound cover. We will never again
be able to kid Nancy about “the book” which she always said was
“in progress.” You are just over the top Nancy!
A GIFT to this Guild – Marilyn Pond
Rather than an owl, Marilyn Pond was presented with a pincush-
ion “present,” because in all her hats and efforts, she is a gift to
this Guild. She steps up when she sees need. She shares her
expertise with everyone generously. She smiles and helps on
committees and makes people feel comfortable. In August she
launched our newcomer program, which the newcomers
reported was a very warm introduction to Orange Grove and a
great success. A couple of members reported that they tagged
along as well, because they had never really taken a good look at
all the stuff around the room or had it fully explained. Thank
you Marilyn for being a gift to all of us with your warmth and
your skills.

Workshop
September 14
WITH
Jane Tenorio-Coscarelli
In September, our Guild will be hosting Jane Tenorio-Coscarelli. She is a free-
lance artist who has combined her artistic talents and love of quilting.
We will be making her Sugar Skull Appliqué Machine Pieced Quilt. It will be so
much fun learning her technique and making something new for some of us,
so stop by the workshop table and sign up! We still have some openings.
Take a peek at the quilt shown here for a look at the second option
you have if you sign up for the Jane Tenorio-Coscarelli Workshop in
September! For those of you who want to complete the Sugar Skulls
quilt, that option remains, but since it is not a full workshop (and we
LOVE full workshops), Jane has agreed to add an alternative - the
“Coffee Girls”, a popular more traditional wall hanging You can sign
up with an email to me – Debi Hanna -- I can take your payment at
the September meeting. The techniques Jane will be teaching apply to
both quilts, and we are so pleased to be able to offer this optional
design! We will have the supply list for you as soon as we get your
signup via email.
The workshop will be held at 5200 Blackpool in Westminster. The instruction begins promptly at 9 a.m.
and ends at 3 p.m. Doors to the room open at 8:15 a.m. giving participants plenty of set-up time in
order to be ready to begin the class on time.
Remember to bring your lunch, drinks and necessary supplies in order to enjoy your day creatively
sewing with quilting friends old and new.
Should you have any questions, please contact:
Workshop Chair: Debi Hanna, [email protected]
Workshop Assistant: Alice Davidson, [email protected]

SUSAN G KOMEN FOR THE CURE
Thank you all for supporting the new quilted wall hanging made by Darci Bodin. I hand quilted it. We will draw the winning ticket at our September meeting. If you purchase a ticket, you can select a fat quarter - my gift to YOU for your ongoing support. This year, we will not have a Quilt Guild booth in the Expo Area. We will also not have a team. I did sign up on another friend's team and if you wish to donate to help the cause, I'll be more than happy to take your donation. Make checks payable to Susan G. Komen. All of your efforts are gratefully accepted. Thanks for your continued support. Our Guild is one awesome group and proud to be a member of it. Barbara Purks

Our guild is doing wonderfully in paying for your tickets. We continue to be available to
you at the next General Meeting to accommodate your purchase and printing needs.
Don’t forget if you pay for $20 of tickets, a sheet of labels is made to your personal
specifications. Additional tickets are available if you want to increase your chances.
The drawing for the winner, is December 6. Good luck everyone and don’t forget to buy
more tickets.

The Words of Comfort, Hope and Promise beach bash for the
Marines of the 3rd Amphibian Battalion was a huge
success!!! Lots of Marine families receiving 133 of your
lovely quilts! Lots of oohing and aahing from all. And The
Battalion Commander was thrilled with his gator quilt
imagined and created by Jane Oglesby. There was plenty of
goings on other than quilts as there was the tug of war,
wheelbarrow race, clowns and plenty of food!! It was all
good.
I was so glad Paul Walters himself came to our last guild
meeting. He is so grateful for all the gifts you give to the
Marines and their families and I thought he did a good job
explaining what happens and why. He came with a smaller
truck and I thought he would never get everything into it,
but he did and when I commented on it he said, "Moving 12
times has given me experience in packing."
Enjoy the pictures. Thank you for making this all possible.

BEACH BASH 2017
On Saturday, August 12, 2017, six volunteers from Orange Grove Quilt Guild traveled to Camp Pendleton for the annual “Beach Bash”. This event is sponsored by the charity Words of Comfort, Hope and Promise. Jane Oglesby, Becky Meekhof, Pam Boozan, Sharon Closson, Ginger Titterington and Marie Blash handed out 133 quilts to the Marine Corps families of the 3D Battalion. We also presented a quilt with the “gator” logo on it to the commanding officer and his wife. It was a great day and a chance to interact with the families who will be using the quilts. A big thank you to all of the quilters who made this donation possible.

BLOCK OF THE MONTH
COORDINTATED BY CHERYL GUACCI AND PATTY THOMPSON 2017
Fifty-three fabulous “Sailboats” were submitted at the August Guild meeting. There were four winners each receiving at least 13 blocks. Congratulations to Dell Childs, Lupe Weebelt, Phyllis Derigo and Kristin Stonham. The block to be submitted at the September meeting is the “Maple Leaf”, (see the August Newsletter). We hope to see lots of Fall colored leaves done in batik fabrics. The October block of the month is “Oh, My Pumpkin”. Create your pumpkin block using a beige background, orange pumpkin, brown stem and green leaf. Prints or solids are okay. Your pumpkin can be one fabric or strips of various fabrics. Use good quality 100% cotton. Use a scant ¼” seam. Upon completion your block should measure 12 ½” square unfinished. It’s never too late to participate. We hope to meet you and see your block(s) at the next meeting! Happy Piecing!!
BLOCK CONSTRUCTION: 1. From the beige background fabric, cut two strips 1 ½” x 12 ½”; two strips 1 ½” x 10 ½”; one strip 5” x 2 ½” and six 2 ½” squares . On each of the six squares, draw a diagonal stitching line on the wrong side. From the brown stem fabric, cut one rectangle 1 ½” x 2 ½”. From the green leaf fabric, cut one rectangle 5” x 2 ½”. The orange pumpkin may be created in one of two ways: a) Use one fabric - cut one rectangle 10 ½” x 8 ½”; or b) cut 2 ½” x 8 ½” strips to total five, from 2, 3, 4 or 5 different fabrics and piece the strips together along the 8 ½” edges to create a new rectangle that is 10 ½” x 8 ½”.
Press the seams open.
2. With right sides together, place a background square on each corner of the pumpkin rectangle in the directions shown on the diagram. “Snowball” the corners by stitching ON the drawn line, trimming a ¼”
seam and pressing the seam towards the background.
3. With right sides together, place one background square on each end of the leaf rectangle in the directions shown on the diagram. Stitch ON the drawn line, trimming away the corners ¼” from the sewn lines. Press the seams towards the leaf
fabric.
4. Arrange the 2 ½” x 5” background strip, stem piece and leaf unit as shown. Stitch the pieces together. Press seams
towards the stem fabric. Sew this to the top of the pumpkin. Press the seam open or towards the background.
5. Sew the 10 ½” x 1 ½” background strips to the top and bottom. Press the seams open or towards the background.
6. Sew the 12 ½” x 1 ½” background strips to the sides. Press the seams open or towards the background.
7. Give the block a final press. Be sure it measures 12 ½” unfinished. Bring to the October meeting.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS…
Complete up to five blocks. Return the completed block(s) for this month to the Block-of-the-Month table at the meeting and, for each block you make, your name is put into a drawing. Before the end of the meeting, one or more names and the winner(s) wind the blocks to take home and use as you like. Also consider…making one block for yourself in the col-
ors of your choice and at the end of the year you will have a sampler quilt for yourself.

WAYS AND MEANS - BASKETS
In September, we will again have two drawings: batiks, mottled, blends.
One of the small wall hangings this month is by Pat Adair. Thank you Pat!
These are the themes for the next few months:
October- Halloween
November- Thanksgiving, Fall
December- Christmas, Winter
As you continue to recycle and downsize, please remember the baskets. Please consider your
gently used items (not only quilt related) for our baskets. For the final months of the year,
please keep in mind holiday items (Halloween-thank you Erin Greer for the great items,
Thanksgiving, Christmas ) that you no longer use but are still useable would be appreciated.
Just a gentle reminder: make sure you deposit your tickets by the end of the break. Also, as a
courtesy to speakers, please purchase tickets before the meeting starts (I try to set up approxi-
mately one hour before) and during the break. Thank you for your cooperation.
Many thanks to those of you who faithfully support our efforts by buying tickets and donate
items every month! A big thank you to Bea Vieira for the
large collection of fabric (she is cleaning out her stash)!
You make our efforts worthwhile and our baskets
successful!
Hoping to see you at our table and hope someday YOU
will have a winning ticket!

QUILT SHOW 2018 – “STITCHES IN BLOOM” July 21, 2018 and July 22, 2018
Pam Boozan and Jane Oglesby – Co-Chairs
The Quilt Show Planning has begun. Our next quilt show title and theme is “Stitches In Bloom”. At our first
meeting, we made many of the first decisions to get started. I want to thank Marie Blash, Christy Kolisnyk,
Dolores Gilbert, and Bonnie Lippincott for joining us for our first meeting. It is especially notable since we
met on Christy and Bonnie’s birthday. Thanks for joining us on your special day!!
In addition to the title/theme, we agreed on a theme for the quilt challenge – Quilt On A Stick, which will be
organized initially by Dolores Gilbert. Dolores is a fairly new member, with many years belonging to the
North Cities Quilt Guild. We are excited to include new members! Come and Join us!
We need a number of volunteers to fill the planning committee adequately. Please consider volunteering to help plan our quilt show. You can work with a friend, and the guild will support you as they always do. If you are interested, please email Pam Boozan at [email protected] and Jane Oglesby at [email protected]. Include what you are interested in. The next meeting is October 3, at 10:00 AM, at Jane Oglesby’s home. Address is in the book. We will meet in
the future on the fourth Tuesday of each month, alternating between Pam and Jane’s homes.
Here is a list of the positions, and names if we have already had volunteers. If you want to help but don’t
know what something means in terms of workload, etc., please contact Pam or Jane. We will be able to
provide some additional information about the duties.
See you soon.
