Dennis was a charter member of Southside and served
faithfully as a Deacon and an Elder for 33 years.
Below are memories wrien this week from his children,
sister, niece and nephew.
He was the first man I ever loved, and he loved me back way more than I ever deserved. He showed me how a man should love a woman in the way he loved my mother, and he showed me Jesus with his tender heart. He cried his eyes out at "Father of the Bride" when I was twelve, but somehow held it together when he walked me down the aisle. That same arm held me steady nine years later when I became a young widow. He cried with me, organized my bills, and tried to talk me into buying a Cadillac, much like he did when he sent me off to college. He showed me what a great father looked like through his love and sacrifice for my brother and myself, and was the reason I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I wanted to raise children
with Will, because I wanted my kids to grow up with a dad like mine. His great-est delight was with his grandchildren, and I pray for their little hearts when we
tell them he is in heaven and won't be able to play with them anymore. Dad, I am so grateful God picked you to be my father. I promise you Lulu will grow up knowing how much you loved her. I hope your heaven is full of golf, sea-shells, bread, and guns. I love you and I miss you so much already. Mary Lynn Swain Staggs
Guns, food, politics, cats, family, friends, military history, muscle cars, UK Basketball, and Jesus: These are all words that describe just a fraction of the qualities that made up my dad. He always had advice to give no matter what the situation. This was a man that you could truly say had seen it all. My dad was a light in the darkness dur-ing troubled times in many people’s lives. He was a respected dentist and community member, a loving and sup-portive husband, and an amazing father and grandfather. I never knew him to speak ill of anyone with one excep-tion and didn’t know a single person that had anything ill to say about him. I will miss my dad, but I smile whenever I think about him and the wonderful life he experienced. He spent his whole life showing people how to get to heav-
en, and now he’s finally found his way there. Drew Swain
My heart hurts. It hurts with earthly pain and suffering. With human emotion that selfishly feels a bit emptier today as my family lost a beautiful person. However, my heart is not broken. It is filled with beautiful memories I'll treasure forever, the understanding of what it means to be a loving husband and father, and most importantly a servant and child of God. Dennis had a heart of gold. He was a leader by example, holding fast to core values in times of trou-ble. He served his country with pride, and no matter what, was ALWAYS there for his family. I miss you Uncle Den, but I know you’re watching over us always. Tara Staley Thomas
If you know me well, you know I’m rarely at a loss for words. I’m having difficulty coming up with the right words to share the tremendous loss of my brother, Dennis Swain. Den was my first photographer, my first boss, and the first family member to give Ed Staley a thumbs up. He was a go-to kind of guy. I don’t recall ever asking him about any-thing he didn’t know something about. He did things the right way and provided a Christian example of love and service for our children and grandchildren. I’m sure the picture he’s taking now is more beautiful than we can imag-ine. “You’re going to lose people in your life and realize no matter how much time you spend with them it will never be enough.” Tammy Swain Staley
One of the things that I will miss most about Uncle Den is how excited he would get about the things he was pas-sionate about. It is no wonder that he was always one of the first people I would call when I got a new toy, gadget, golf club, or car. I think he got more excited about it than I did. He was also passionate about loving his fami-ly. Growing up it was normal for us to get together frequently with Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. It wasn't until much later in life that I realized just how special this was and that other families only saw their cousins a few times per year. Uncle Den's passion for his family can be seen in how involved he was. He never missed an opportunity to go to school plays, kids’ performances, family birthday parties, and church activities, just to name a few. He was also passionate about his church family. He was an example of a strong Christian man to all he met. He was meekness personified. Great strength under great control with compassion for his fellow man. I only hope that I can instill in my own children the same great love of God and Family. Roy Staley

When You Don’t Like What God’s Word Says
Has there ever been a *me when you didn’t like
something God’s Word said? If so, what did you do? I cer-
tainly wouldn’t suggest you do what one-*me king of Ju-
dah, Jehoiakim, did.
21 The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and Jehudi
brought it from the room of Elishama the secretary and read it to
the king and all the officials standing beside him. 22
It was the
ninth month and the king was si$ng in the winter apartment,
with a fire burning in the firepot in front of him. 23
Whenever Je-
hudi had read three or four columns of the scroll, the king cut
them off with a scribe’s knife and threw them into the firepot,
unl the enre scroll was burned in the fire. 24
The king and all his
a,endants who heard all these words showed no fear, nor did
they tear their clothes.” as an indication of their repentance.
Jeremiah 36:21-24
Destroying the scroll didn’t accomplish anything.
32 So Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the
scribe Baruch son of Neriah, and as Jeremiah dictated, Baruch
wrote on it all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Ju-
dah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added
to them.” Jeremiah 36:32
