Whenever his phone rings,Luke already knows the answeryou are looking for.

‘Yes, we’ve got that’, or ‘Yes, we can get that’, is what you want to hear.

Our job is to provide the parts and products that your business needs and so, as far as we are concerned answering your call with, ‘the computer says no’, isn’t doing our job properly.

We can’t promise to have everything in stock all the time, but we can promise to always have a positive attitude. That’s a promise we deliver on.

Aqua Platinum was commissioned to design and build this private swimming pool and spa complex for a highly prestigious one of a kind project. The brief from the client was to build a swimming pool worthy of its surroundings, being a 36,000 sq foot home in the heart of Chelsea. The design includes a bespoke stainless slot detail for spa deck level drainage and a bespoke 7m-water feature cascading into the pool. The water feature is powered by 3 x 3 HP pumps and can be operated in its entirety remotely using a custom-made application. The crescent shaped spa contains 29 powerful massage jets and a stainless steel air-pad volcano in its base. The spa is a stunning deck-level design and raised 220mm above FFL and the main swimming pool, which has been designed to operate on a better than 2-hour water turnover utilising medium-rate dual filtration. The pool water will be treated with a Triogen UVAzone system, PAC dosing and a Bayrol Pool Manager. The pool and spa will be finished in stunning Bianco Mother of Pearl Mosaics that is an equal to the quality of technical design behind this project.

The 112th One Day Seminar was at a new venue for the Institute, The Walton Park Hotel, standing in a majestic position on the cliff top overlooking the Bristol Channel, and details of this excellent day will be covered in the next issue of the ISPE Magazine. (At the point he uttered this we had about 3 left in stock and had not sold one for years!) In anticipation of the rush, following this instruction from your President, we have taken delivery of a new stock of shiny blue and white ISPE Lapel badges. A Nice Pairing - SPATEX 2016 and ISPEWith Christmas and New Year festivities behind us, it’s that time of the year when ISPE works in tandem with the UK’s number one water leisure Exhibition, SPATEX. The difference being, this year it’s SPATEX’s 20th anniversary, making it a very special edition indeed. When the curtain rises on SPATEX at the Ricoh Arena at the end of the month, the Industry will be treated to the biggest display of water leisure equipment in the UK and the largest source of free training and education. Marking the Show’s 20th anniversary, it promises to be one of the best ever!

The Ricoh Arena

Sold out of exhibition space some two months early (with additional stands created to meet demand), the Show’s Organiser, Michele Bridle is overwhelmed by the Industry’s fantastic response. “I’d like to thank all our exhibitors for their fantastic support. We have well over a hundred

exhibitors, including the biggest names in the Industry and some never seen before at SPATEX. Together they represent all sectors under the water leisure umbrella. Don’t ever think of SPATEX as being just about swimming pools - spa companies are putting the Spa into SPATEX with names such as Passion Spas, Wellis, Superior Spas, Elite Spas, Spa Crest, Aqua Via Spas, GMT Spas, Certikin, Astral, Hydrospares, Rivierapools, Plastica, SCP, Coast Spas UK, Pollet, Aqua Spa Supply/Vita Spas and Procopi all signed up.The Show with substance Aside from being 2016’s biggest shop window for the latest products and innovations, what makes SPATEX such a worthwhile Show to visit is its unparalleled quantity and quality of workshops and seminars. Michele says: “repeating the success of last year, we are offering a double programme of workshops and seminars on all three days of the Show. ISPE will, of course, be in full attendance throughout all three days offering a jam-packed programme of new workshops. SPATEX is so much more than just a pool and spa Exhibition thanks in large part to the ISPE, which has provided a fantastic platform for valuable training and education. These workshops have proved extremely popular and are now

For instance, we have a special workshop for the operators of animal hydrotherapy pools on Monday February 1st (15.00 – 15.30), followed by a question and answer session. On Tuesday February 2nd there will be a series of talks by experts from the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) from 10.00 until 14.45 that are of particular importance for spa operators in commercial or business situations.” There will be two new marketing

workshops on Sunday January 31st. ISPE General Secretary Ross Alcock adds: “SPATEX 2016 will also see the return of the ‘SPATEX Big Competition’,

to add a touch of fun and friendly rivalry to the occasion of the 20th anniversary.”

“The Plant Room Challenge” Hosted by John Asher Hon.FISPE and assisted by Chris Carr FISPE and Phil Barlow MISPE. We are looking for four teams of two, to enter this challenge where the winners will share a huge £400 CASH prize. The competition revises a theme from previous SPATEX shows where the audience watches teams compete to fit some commonly used plant room equipment together. It’s not all fun though because the completed rig, comprising a filter, heat exchanger, pump and associated pipework, on completion, will be very carefully inspected to ensure it has been assembled correctly! Spaces are extremely limited to just four teams of two. Open to all, these will be reserved on a first-come-first-served basis, so to be in with a chance of winning contact [email protected] now.

PROGRAMME OF WORKSHOPS AND DEMONSTRATIONS

Organised by the ISPE on behalf of SPATEX Ltd.

For the 20th anniversary of SPATEX we are delighted to now be able to reveal the full programme of 22 NEW free-to-enter ISPE Workshops. Each Workshop is designed to give delegates a taster or an introduction to the subject being presented which may encourage interested parties to seek further information from the speaker on their stand, or at the ISPE stand, (A21 almost next to the main Technical Arena) after a particular session. The Institute is extremely grateful to all the speakers and their companies who have agreed to participate in this milestone event and we very much hope to see record attendances for 2016. New for 2016 will be the inclusion of 1 CPD point for each Workshop attended and this will be shown on the attendance certificates which may be requested at each session (and will be posted to delegates after the show).

ISPE MAGAZINE Vol. 26 No. 4 9

The Real ‘Da Vinci Code’Early cryptographers claimed Leonardo da Vinci wrote his notebooks in simple code – the detailed notebooks demonstrated his working plans as engineer, inventor, geologist, cartographer, sculptor, anatomist, botanist, musician, mathematician, writer, along with some immaculate drawings and careful designs for paintings and frescoes, weapons and machines, statues and buildings. He made his code of work for the ‘measurement of beauty and how to recreate it’ his ultimate purpose. It was the mirror writing (ie. the minute handwriting that read backwards from right to left) that scholars puzzled over, but which is easily ‘deciphered’ with a mirror. An ordinary left-handed person will explain that when writing on paper with pen and ink from left to right, it is difficult to stop the left hand dragging across wet ink and blotting your copybook. A thoroughly left-handed scribe finds it much easier to ‘write backwards’ towards the left, exactly the opposite way to the right-handed person. Left-handed Leonardo sought perfection in whatever he did. He was obsessed with the perceived perfection of ‘Vitruvian Man’– an ideal Being based upon De Architectura, the 10 books by 1st century BC Roman master builder Marcus Vitruvius Pollio. Vitruvius had put into daily practice the philosophical ideas of Pythagoras that ‘purification in a perfect form

allows us to return to our Divine source’. The 5th Book describes in detail, the best new-build layout for body and soul cleansing in Baths by size, shape and sequence. And the 3rd Book explains the arrangement of buildings, sacred ones in particular, based upon the proportions of Man. The human body was considered to be a true model for perfection, since ‘with arms and legs extended, it would fit exactly into the perfect geometric form of a circle surrounded by a square’.

Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian man. In Dan Brown’s book ‘The Da Vinci Code’, the first murder victim lies naked and posed like Leonardo’s

drawing.

In Leonardo’s time (1452–1519), many artists tried to illustrate this Divine relationship of the body, but with definite lack of success. They squeezed and stretched limbs to meet the four points, where the perfect

Manufacture and supply of the world’s largest selection of Ozone, UV, UVAZONE and SPAZONE water treatment products for the swimming pool industry.

circle centred on a perfect square touches all the four corners. The contrived results gave completely disproportionate figures for the early Renaissance. Leonardo solved the dilemma brilliantly by first drawing a perfectly proportioned man, and then finding the circle and the square in the figure. His circle and square are tangent only at one place, at the base where they come together. Vitruvian Man has become today an icon worthy of being displayed in spaceships and on satellites! Leonardo believed mankind represented a microcosm in harmony with the Universe. The perfect body therefore, should provide the basis for measuring the spaces around us, especially in buildings and places where we live, work and play.

Vitruvius had explained that surveys and plans involved the manipulation of squares and circles with rule and compass, a process well understood by today’s working engineer setting-out a pool site for construction. The thesis for the original 10 books of architecture was provision of ‘technical information for practitioners’. Similar, in some respects, to the present 13 technical papers for ISPE engineers! According to Vitruvius, a true architect can’t just be a master of his trade, he has to be a well-rounded person, because ‘architecture is the defining human art. It creates civilisation. It constructs homes and it lays out cities, bringing people together ... it also aligns the Man-made with the Divine-inspired, and it builds Empire.’ Accordingly, the measurements of Man are arranged in clear human fashion by Nature and a basic scale is written on the Vitruvian drawing to demonstrate: 4 fingers make 1 palm; 4 palms make 1 foot; 6 palms make 1 cubit, or length of forearm from elbow to tip of middle finger; 4 cubits make 1 pace and also make a man. From the bottom of the chin to the top of the head is an eighth the height of a man; the widest distance across the shoulders contains in itself a quarter part of the man; the span to which the man opens his arms is equivalent to his height. All the various man measures make his courtyards, villas, bathhouses, theatres and temples.

typical modern, pure-shape pool therefore measures out as 20 x 10 cubits. When measurement is codified, there’s need for accompanying notes, such as those below selected from Vitruvius’ Book 5.10, Of the Arrangement and Parts of Baths: 1. First, as warm a spot as possible is to be selected, that is to say, one sheltered from the north and north-east. The hot and tepid baths are to receive their light from the winter west ... because the hours of bathing are principally from noon to evening. 2. The raised floors for underfloor heating are to be made so that the bottom is paved with tiles of a foot and a half inclining towards the furnace, that if a ball is thrown into it, it will not remain therein, but roll back to the mouth of the furnace; thus

the flames will better spread under the floor. 3. The ceilings, if of masonry, will be preferable; if, however, they are of timber, they should be plastered on the underside ... and then finished with stucco or fine plastering. If the vaulting of hot baths is made double it will be better, because the moisture of the steam cannot then affect the timber, but will be condensed between the two arches. 4. The size of baths must depend on the number of persons who frequent them. Their proportions are as follows: their width is to be two thirds of their length, exclusive of the space round the bathing vessel and the gutter round it. The surround ought to be spacious, so that those who are waiting for their turn may be properly

First, as warm a spot as possible is to be selected, that is to say, one sheltered from the north and north-east. The hot and tepid baths are to receive their light from the winter west ... because the hours of bathing are principally from noon to evening.2. The raised floors for underfloor heating are to be made so that the bottom is paved with tiles of a foot and a half inclining towards the furnace, that if a ball is thrown into it, it will not remain therein, but roll

back to the mouth of the furnace; thus the flames will better spread under the floor. 3. The ceilings, if of masonry, will be preferable; if, however, they are of timber, they should be plastered on the underside ... and then finished with stucco or fine plastering. If the vaulting of hot baths is made double it will be better, because the moisture of the steam cannot then affect the timber, but will be condensed between the two arches.4. The size of baths must depend on the number of persons who frequent them. Their proportions are as follows: their width is to be two thirds of their length, exclusive of the space round the bathing vessel and the gutter round it. The surround ought to be spacious, so that those

who are waiting for their turn may be properly accommodated. A one-man wide pavement from the bath cushion edging is required to allow 2 persons to comfortably pass one another, or walk side by side. Probably, the best Roman Bath complex we have in Britain is Aquae Sulis. It is still in full flow at Bath Spa, a place of pilgrimage for all aspiring and aspired pool people. The bath itself is lined with inches thick sheets of lead to retain the thermal waters that rise from the depths at 50 degrees C. The bathhouse was more a temple of purity than a centre for activity ... a place where personal and religious relationships were more important than the pleasure or the power swims.

(John Dawes, Bartholomew 1974).

The Great Bath today still employs the original Roman bathing vessel, now surrounded by an imaginative Victorian superstructure. If you can’t get to Bath Spa in Somerset, try to make a virtual visit by exploring www.romanbaths.co.uk and then ‘Travel back in time ... on the Roman site.’ The British Library has fully digitised its Da Vinci manuscript notebook collection for their Online Gallery; and Leonardo’s design for an underwater breathing apparatus would work well in a swimming pool environment. © John Dawes Jan 2015 (Yes, 2015!)

The 35th ISPE AGM

The 35th Annual General Meeting of the Institute took place as part of the ISPE’s 111th One-Day Seminar on Tuesday 20th October, 2015 at 2.20pm at the Watermill Hotel, near Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. Newly elected ISPE President and Chairman of the meeting, John Cheek, FISPE, opened the meeting and read a list of apologies for absence. The first item on the Agenda was: To receive and consider the Accounts for the year ended 30th June, 2015, together with the report of the Directors and Auditors thereon. This motion was proposed by Chris Carr, FISPE, seconded by Allen Wilson, FISPE, and agreed unanimously. The second item on the Agenda was: To elect three members to the Council of Management. Howard Gosling, Colin Jenkinson and Mike Shuff resigned in accordance with Article 47 and, being eligible, offered themselves for re-election in accordance with Article 48. Selwyn Mindel resigned from Council and did not seek re-election. No other nominations were received. This motion was proposed by Colin Day MISPE, seconded by John Scott, FISPE and agreed unanimously. The third item on the Agenda was: To appoint Lanham and Company as Auditors to the Company and to authorise the Directors to fix their remuneration. This motion was proposed by Ben Studdy, FISPE, seconded by John

Scott, FISPE, and agreed unanimously. This concluded the official business of the Annual General Meeting and the Chairman thanked everyone for attending and closed the meeting at 2.25 p.m.

Selwyn Mindel, FISPE Retires from ISPE Council

Selwyn Mindel was elected to the Institute Council in October 1981 and served continuously until he announced his retirement from the Council at the AGM in October 2015. At the most recent ISPE Council meeting Allen Wilson, as President, recorded his and the Institute’s thanks for all the time, help and expertise Selwyn gave to the Institute over the years, and this was acknowledged by those present. It should be noted that Selwyn completed 34 years of continuous service and was the longest serving Council member at the point of his retirement from Council. This really is an amazing accomplishment, and I would also note that in that time, Selwyn attended many, many seminars, gave a number of presentations, contributed papers to the Institute and the ISPE Magazine, donated a trophy to the Institute and hardly missed a Council meeting, all in addition to serving a term of office as President of the Institute. Great service indeed. Ross Alcock January 2016

New ISPE-Endorsed Training Provider John Eccles, MISPE - World Leisure UK

In recent years, recognizing the need for specialist training in the commercial sector, the ISPE has “endorsed” the training provided by a small number of Institute Members who, through their companies provide training in this area. This training caters for swimming pool operators working in hotels, schools, leisure clubs, holiday parks and other commercial facilities. In addition to the current ISPE-endorsed training providers whose details appear opposite, we are pleased to announce that John Eccles, MISPE of ‘World Leisure UK’ now joins this very select group. World Leisure UK are specialists in providing a technical design service to the water leisure industry, followed by the installation of pools to BS 8007 or BS 110 standards. In addition to pool finishes, other core areas of expertise include water treatment plant, wave machines, water features, water slides, movable floors and well-being controlled environments. With our expertise we will undertake anything from exclusive domestic developments to large international projects. We have an extensive in-house technical facility and have teamed up with universities to supplement our research facility. With offices in

Glasgow and Leyland we primarily work in the UK and Mainland Europe and our clients include Local Authorities, the Ministry of Defence, Schools, Hospitals, Competition Pools and we have recently completed a project at the Olympic Park. With such prestigious centres we, as a company, believe that the staff on site should be trained to the highest standard in all aspects of pool plant operation, chemical handling and safety, day-to-day maintenance and, should the worst happen, emergency procedures and how to deal with a situation. With this in mind we have decided to offer a comprehensive training course, which is endorsed by the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers. The courses are site-specific as we believe, whilst all pools follow the same basic principles, each site tends to have its own little idiosyncrasies, and staff should be trained on their pool not someone else's or a fictitious pool. The course will cover all aspects of pool plant operation, chemical handling and safety, water testing, chemical dosing, microbiological testing and health and safety, day-to-day maintenance, general fault finding and emergency procedures in line with the PWTAG, Sport England and the Health and Safety Executive.

At the end of the course, an exam will be given along with an assignment relating to the course delegate’s pool, which needs to be returned within three weeks. An overall assessment will be made and anyone who passes will be issued with a certificate which will be valid for three years. In addition, anyone attending the course is able to access a free telephone helpline for any technical problems relating to their pool. The course tutor will be John Eccles, MISPE, who has over 20 years’ experience in the industry. For details of the course, duration

and cost please contact Loraine Tattler on 01772 284883 or email

Full House for the ISPE Filtration Workshop Back in November the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers headed down to St Leonards-on-Sea to Plastipack’s headquarters for the annual ISPE Filtration workshop. The Filtration workshop has now become a regular fixture on the ISPE events calendar each autumn. The workshop is organized by Chris Carr FISPE and assisted by Philip Barlow MISPE and Kim Mumford MISPE. Chris wishes to acknowledge Phil & Kim’s commitment to this increasingly popular event and stated; “It’s a pleasure to have Phil and Kim on board, who both help to make the workshop run smoothly and interesting for all the delegates. Phil’s hands-on guidance is simply excellent and his knowledge on all aspects of pool engineering is first class”. NOTE: Phil recently became a council member of ISPE and he has presented a number of very interesting presentations both with Chris Carr at SPATEX and on his own at various ISPE events. Phil is

becoming well known in the UK pool industry as an expert on ‘Leak detection’ and ‘Spa servicing’. The ISPE Filtration workshop further enhances the Institute’s avenues of education and has proven to help many new recruits to the industry, especially students who are due to sit their exams. This year Chris had managed to negotiate a very special rate at the Royal Victoria hotel which is right on the sea front in Hastings and just 5 minutes’ drive from Plastipack’s premises. This accommodation made it much easier for delegates who had to travel a long way to arrive in good time, and this will be arranged for future events. The Filtration workshops are usually run each autumn (October/November depending on other industry events) and cater for 10 to a maximum of 16 delegates at a time. The main concept of this workshop is that each delegate will have the opportunity to more clearly understand both the theory and the practical elements of domestic

swimming pool filtration, plant & equipment. For this session, we had a ‘full house’ of 16 and our enthusiastic delegates arrived from all over the country to a warm welcome from Plastipack staff, as well as Chris, Phil and Kim.

Chris Carr gets the Workshop rolling Following the safety briefing, the workshop kicked off with a morning session of in-depth theory for Domestic Filtration, presented in a Power-point display by Chris Carr. From the outset, Chris stressed that all delegates would be subject to a practical trade test as well as a mini exam and at the end of the day certificates would be awarded with pass marks for both elements being graded as pass, merit, credit or distinction. Our learned delegates listened intently and posed a few interesting questions during the morning session. Phil assisted by demonstrating various ways to cut and join pipes, as well as how to correctly apply PTFE tape to threaded components. Phil made it look so easy (no doubt he could do this blind-folded)! Later in the morning all delegates set off to Plastipack’s

workshop for the practical trade test which was to make a pipe-work set. The pipe set test is designed to be awkward, but a good test to measure accuracy in cutting pipe, glue preparation, and perfecting glued & threaded joints. All delegates were monitored throughout the test and each completed item was marked against key criteria to ensure a good standard of workmanship and time taken. A key area of the day’s events is the importance of correctly sizing the pipe-work to comply with the standards for suction and return velocities. This seemed to be a bit of an eye opener for most delegates, as it seems that many older pools may have undersized suction pipe-work. The morning session ran like clockwork and hungry delegates enjoyed an excellent buffet lunch organized by Kim and Ian. Later delegates were split into groups for the afternoon ‘hands on’ session. Chris & Phil instructed the groups, covering all aspects of filter & pump ‘strip down’ and rebuild. Each group was instructed to empty and refill a filter of its media (in this case Zeolite, which was donated by MSI). Phil was able to give a great deal of advice on pump & filter servicing having worked on pool filtration plant for over 20 years. As well as stripping out the sand from the filters, delegates were instructed to remove all internal pipe-work & fittings, checking and inspecting for damage. Any faulty components were replaced as should

be the case in a typical service scenario. Likewise, Phil had prepared a variety of different pumps which were to be completely stripped down, with Phil & Chris giving additional guidance as to how to test & change a mechanical seal. The delegates (some more experienced than others) really seemed to enjoy the team spirit, working together in groups and a fair amount of useful knowledge was exchanged between them, making the day even more valuable. Later in the afternoon, it was back to the classroom and all delegates sat a twenty minute – multi-choice exam paper. Whilst these exam papers were being marked, interested delegates had the opportunity to

have a tour of Plastipack’s impressive manufacturing and test pool facilities. It was clear from the results that the day’s events had paid off, as all delegates had more than adequately reached the minimum pass mark. And the average for all attendees was an excellent 76%! Obituary

Joseph Christopher Smith, “Joe” was born 20th September 1945 and left us 7th November 2015. His grandparents came from Russia at the beginning of the last century; they had been on their way to America, the promised land, and the Russian ship’s Captain dropped everyone off in Scotland telling them that they had arrived in the USA! Joe was brought up in Coatbridge, Glasgow, and on leaving school he became a coal miner and then a shuttering carpenter. In the 1960s he went down south to Southampton and worked for a while as a bouncer in a Ballroom. Those of us that knew him well will not be surprised at this as he was certainly someone you didn't argue with unless you really had to! It was during his time down south that he first saw Guniting take place, and thought that he could do that. He went into sprayed concrete contracting as 'J C Smith Contracting' and started blowing pool shells for Anchor Pools in the late 1960s, and then, having had one of his periodic falling outs, he left and joined Tenders International as a Director. He was about to start his most successful period in 1974, and was to carry out all the sprayed concrete work on the Cormorant 'A' Oil Rig, which was the largest Concrete Oil Rig in the World at the time. He then, in about 1976, left Tenders and set up Premier Gunite, a trade company, and later on, Heritage Swimming Pools. He was blowing swimming pool shells for over twenty other pool companies and carried on doing so for almost 40 years, and built up a good reputation.

Joe was certainly a larger than life character and few didn't have a strong opinion about him, whether for or against, and one of the reasons for his success over the 45 years that I knew him was that he clearly attracted skilled, capable people to work with, and for him, some of them working with him for almost fifty years, even though he could be quite difficult at times. He was also quite generous, and he was one of the best buyers that I have worked with.

Joe Smith

At a couple of swimming pool shows he helped Molly (former ISPE Company Secretary) by selling raffle tickets for ISPE, which he did very well. I have to admit that I had connived with Molly so that I could get him away from the stand as he was quite disruptive at times, which is probably one of the reasons that he sold so many raffle tickets. (One year, way back, we arrived at the Brighton Exhibition complete with two cases of wine and WE had drunk it all before lunch time!!! Well, that's all over. Joe will be missed by many, and few will forget him, I certainly had my ups und downs, and many differences of opinion, but we remained friends to the end. Bill Hales Hon.FISPE.

ISPE October Seminar and 2015 Awards Allen Wilson, at his last ISPE Seminar as Institute President, welcomed around fifty delegates to the Watermill Hotel, Bourne End, and introduced Phil Allman and Tony Carter who gave a sponsored presentation on The EJ Bowman Range of Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers for the Swimming Pool Industry. Tony and Phil also brought some products to display and more details of this presentation will appear in a later issue. Graham Kneale, FISPE tackled the topic of Selecting Grilles and Air Terminal Devices for Swimming Pool Air Distribution, and delegates were all supplied with a selection of brochures kindly supplied by Gilberts. Graham has produced an excellent follow-up paper on this subject and this will be made available to Members in due course. The final session of the morning was a lively open discussion led by ISPE Vice-President, John Cheek, FISPE. Again, we hope to cover this subject

in more detail in a later issue. After an excellent lunch delegates gathered in the afternoon to see Allen bid farewell as ISPE President as he handed the Chain of Office to John Cheek.

Allen hands over to John Cheek

John’s first duty was to conduct the 35th Annual General Meeting of the Institute, details of which may be found on page 13 of this issue. Following the AGM, John moved on to the 2015 Institute Awards.

John’s first award as President was to present Allen Wilson with a Gold ISPE Past-President’s badge. Fellowships are within the gift of the Council and may be awarded to individuals for their contribution to the industry, and to the Institute in particular. John announced that for 2015, the Council were awarding one Fellowship. John continued, “The recipient has been a Member of the Institute for a number of years. He has given help and advice to members and students over the years and presented a number of papers at Institute seminars and at SPATEX. He has written numerous technical articles for the Institute which have appeared in the ISPE Magazine. In recent years he was elected to the Institute Council and in addition to his other work, he now spends a fair bit of his time answering questions put to him via the Institute office from members and others. I am delighted to invite Colin Day to join me to receive a silver Fellow’s ISPE lapel badge and Fellow’s certificate.”

New ISPE Fellow, Colin Day

Thirty six students sat the Institute’s Level 1 Examinations in 2015 and John presented Certificates to seven (who were present) of the seventeen newly qualified Technicians, and congratulated them on passing the examinations.

The Gartside Cup, for the Student of the Year, is presented to the student who achieved the highest overall marks in the examinations. The Winner of this award does not actually retain the Gartside Cup, but does receive a replica to keep.

John presented the Gartside Cup to Michael Coyle who works for Certikin International. The Jim Johnson Filtration Shield may be awarded for a Technical Paper, or Seminar presentation on the subject of Filtration, or to the student that

submits the best Examination paper on that subject. The winner does not keep the main shield but does receive a small shield to keep. For 2015 it was awarded for an excellent Filtration examination paper, and John presented the Jim Johnson Filtration Shield to Darren Bright.

The John Asher Cup was presented to the Institute by John Asher on his retirement from the Institute Council last year. It will be awarded annually where a student submits an excellent exam paper on the subject of Construction. John said there were plans to present the Cup to a winner this year but that person was unable to be present and so the presentation was postponed. The winners of the three cups will have the opportunity to have their award re-presented to them, in front of their peers from all parts of the pool and spa industry, as part of the Gala Dinner and Awards Evening, organised by SPATA, on Sunday 31st January at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, following the first day of SPATEX 2016. All winners

will be contacted to see if they are able to attend.

All successful in 2015 Following the awards, John introduced Elizabeth Tetzner, a Partner with Irwin Mitchell, who talked about ‘The Legal Implications of What Happens When it Goes Wrong’. We hope to publish more on this subject in a later issue. Following Elizabeth’s presen-tation, delegates welcomed Allen Wilson back to the floor. John pointed out that Allen had been ‘in the wars’ a bit recently and thanked Allen for making the effort to travel to the seminar to give his presentation, about Legionnaires’ and Microbiological Testing. All delegates were presented with a delegate pack containing copies of the presentations or summaries of them, together with an attendance certificate awarding them each 4 CPD points. Wilson and Green’s Words of Wisdom

How to recognise a Pooly/nerd 1. He takes a cruise for his annual holiday so he can go on a personal tour of the engine room. 2. At technical college he thought the Spring Break was metal fatigue. 3. At an air show, he knows how fast the skydivers are falling. 4. He can quote scenes from every Monty Python movie. 5. He still has brand new, never used, spark plugs and an air filter on a shelf in his garage for a 1986 Rover 216, that he once owned. 6. He can type 50 words per minute on a word processor, but can't read his own handwriting. 7. He takes material safety data sheets with him on holiday to read. 8. He sits backwards on the theme park rides to see how they do their special effects. 9. He has saved every piece of electrical flex and 13A plug from all his broken appliances since 1987. 10. He has more friends on the Internet than in real life. 11. He can tell you what http:// stands for and will do if given the slightest opportunity. 12. When he sees a good design he still has to change it. 13. He spent more on his calculator than he did on her wedding ring. 14. He thinks that people around him who are yawning and looking bored are sleep deprived. 15. His laptop computer costs more than his car. 16. He carries one of the multi-purpose toolkits that fit inside his pocket.

17. He never misses an ISPE seminar or SPATEX. 18. His wife hasn't the remotest idea of what he does for a living. 19. His bedside cabinet has Allen keys, self tapping screws and washers on it from where he empties his pockets each night whilst undressing and putting on his ‘Inspector Gadget’ pyjamas. 20. To get his attention you just have to unfold an engineering drawing or alternatively, shout “Allen”. Disclaimer: All references to he or his also refers to she and her. The above is from the May edition of Allen Wilson’s Pool and Spa magazine. It’s free and it’s in an e:magazine format. It contains all the serious things we need to know about and then some we don’t. Despite giving copious information on the savings possible, there was resistance from the school caretaker, or should I say pool manager?

The two main points - i. The extra time taken to fit the cover. (I towed it on with the tow rope supplied, walked to the roller end and wound it off. Total time taken for the two operations and the 20 metre walk, nine minutes.) ii. “What happens if I fall in with the cover on the pool?” “How long have you worked here?” “Ten years or so.” “How many times have you fallen in?” “Never, but what if I didn't fall in near the edge?” “You would have to take a running jump to achieve that.” I was beginning to wish he would, but the caretaker, site manager, pool manager is our most valuable link to that site and needed nurturing and coaxing along. Fortunately most of you will know they all need our advice at some

stage in the operation of the pool, plant or testing. So there is a double edge sword relationship. Stay calm, keep smiling and then when you are a mile down the road SCREAM. John Green MISPE Hydrogen Peroxide Certain chemicals can be used in the illicit manufacture of explosives. Due to this, from 2 September 2014, members of the public who want to acquire or import these chemicals must hold a licence issued by the Home Office and an associated photographic identity document. From 2 March 2016, members of the public who want to possess or use these chemicals must hold a licence issued by the Home Office and an associated photographic identity document. Businesses who sell or supply such chemicals must report suspicious transactions to the national contact point on 0800 78932, also any significant losses and/or thefts. A licence is required before regulated substances can be legitimately supplied to a member of the public. Sulphuric acid will become a reportable substance. A member of the public must show their valid explosive precursors licence and associated photo ID document before you can supply any regulated chemicals.
