    HOPELAWN, NJ Eric

Applegate led the scoring in the

    Family League at Majestic Lanes

firing games of 279-267-259 for a

    high series of 805.

    Rocco Fortunato rolled 206-246-

    265-717, Kevin Kopko 210-225-

    257-692, Joe Bloodgood 229-217-

    228-674, Al Patrick 244-234-654,

    Anthony Angotti 248-212-653,

    and Beth Ford 234-212-624.

    Eric Applegate 805 at Majestic

LAS VEGAS, Nev. For two weeks,

nearly 250 of the worlds best

bowlers battled each other in a gruel-

ing series of individual events during

    the Professional Bowlers

    Associations World Series of

    Bowling at South Point Bowling

Center. On the final day, the best from

America met the best from the rest of

the world, and came in second.

    The PBA World Series of

    Bowlings special team event pitted

the six American bowlers who had

    finished highest in the 60-game

    qualifying session against the six

international bowlers who had fared best while bowl-

ing 12 games per day on five different lane conditions.

The six-man team event awarded one point for each of

six head-to-head matches, plus three points to the

team with the highest total pinfall.

While the head-to-head matches wound up in a 3-3

tie, The World won the team total battle and decisive

    three points, 1,251-1,208.

It was fun, said Australias Jason Belmonte, who

defeated Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, 254-215,

in their head-to-head match. But fun or not, were

competitors. We dont like to lose.

Michael Haugen Jr. of Carefree, Ariz., gave the U.S.

a healthy lead when he defeated Finlands Kimmo

Lehtonen, 246-161, in the first match. Canadas Dan

MacLelland trimmed the American lead in Match

Two when he topped Ronnie Russell of Camby, Ind.,

192-169. Belmonte then put The World into the over-

all lead, and fellow two-handed specialist Osku

Palermaa of Finland padded the international teams

lead with his easy 227-150 victory over Sean Rash of

Montgomery, Ill.Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, tried to get the

U.S. back into the match, but a late surge of four

strikes by opponent Mika Koivuniemi, the third Finn

on The World team, closed Barnes margin of victory

to a modest three pins, 227-224. International anchor

bowler Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela started his

game with four strikes and held off a rally by U.S.

anchor Bill ONeill of Southampton, Pa., who won

the point, 201-193, but it wasnt enough to overcome

    The Worlds overall lead.

It was a long, tiring two weeks, ONeill said. The

team match was a good way to end the World Series,

even though we lost. I hope we get to do it again next

    year.

ARLINGTON, TX (January 12, 2011) - One of the premier

annual events leading up to the Super Bowl, the NFL Super

Bowl Celebrity Bowling Classic will be twice as big in

2011. For the first time in its six year history, the Classic

will be extended to a two-day event as the Super Bowl

comes to the DFW region, the "Bowling Capital of the

World." In addition to serving as the host city of Super

Bowl XLV, to be played at Cowboys Stadium, Arlington is

home to the International Bowling Campus which houses

the International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame and the

International Training and Research Center. Dual sport

Hall of Famer - football and bowling - Lynn Swann returns

for his fifth year as host of the Classic, this year doing dou-

ble duty with appearances at both events: 7 p.m. on

Wednesday, February 2 at 300 Dallas in Addison, Texas and

7 p.m. on Thursday, February 3 at the Main Event in Fort

Worth."They say that everything is bigger in Texas, so it's only

appropriate that we extend the NFL Super Bowl Celebrity

Bowling Classic into a two-day bowling extravaganza in

Dallas-Fort Worth, the bowling capital of the world," said

Swann. "Unlike the actual Super Bowl, if you don't play

well in the Super Bowl Celebrity Bowling Classic, you get

a second chance in our two-day event."

Added Swann, "The Classic has become a true Super Bowl

tradition and its enduring popularity is a credit to the fun

and camaraderie that you'll only find when you go bowling

as well as the tremendous fundraising power of bowling

events. Once again, all proceeds from these events will ben-

efit the NFL Charities, a wonderful cause that enables the

NFL to leave a positive mark in communities across the

    nation."

Prior to the Classic, the NFL greats will team with profes-

sional bowlers to lead a private bowling clinic for local at-

risk Arlington area elementary school children on

    Wednesday, February 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the

International Training & Research Center (private clinic

will be open to the media only).

"We couldn't be more excited to bring the Super Bowl andthe NFL Super Bowl Celebrity Bowling Classic to our

home, the bowling capital of the world. With more than 71

million people taking to the lanes, it has been a banner year

for the bowling industry - and it is only fitting for the

biggest Classic ever to be hosted less than one mile away

from the International Bowling Campus," said Frank

DeSocio of Strike Ten Entertainment. "We are also

absolutely thrilled to have Lynn Swann work 'double duty'

as host of both Classic events and to provide the fans with

two chances to bowl side-by-side with some of the greatest

NFL stars in the history of the game, and all in the name of

    a great cause."

Legendary NFL stars and Pro Football Hall of Fame mem-

bers confirmed to participate in the Classic include (subject

to change): Hank Bauer, Marlin Briscoe, Keith Byars,

Randy Cross, Preston Pearson, Ed "Too Tall" Jones, Billy

"White Shoes" Johnson, Jerry Kramer, John Randle, Parnell

Dickinson, Marv Fleming, Charles Haley, Rodney

    Hampton, Reggie Haynes, Thomas "Hollywood"

    Idle bowling thoughts.

    ...Rules seem to becoming loos-

er and looser in every phase of

the game. Much has been done

in the tournament area and too

much to make it easier for tour-

    naments to secure more entries.

    Youth and solid no sandbagger

    suspicion bowlers (using

    planned methods to keep aver-

    ages down to receive unwarrant-

    ed and unrealistic free handicap

    pins) should be protected with

    common sense edicts. Strict but

fair should be the guideline for

    every league and tourney rule.

...High praise is due the top

    women bowlers who still keep

    themselves in top bowling form

to roll in the few major women's

    events around since the women's

    tour ceased regular operations

in 2003. But shining beams do

burst though the clouds such aswhen Kelly Kulick won the

    Tournament of champions or

    when Wendy Macpherson won

    the Japan Women's Open and

with her first prize and a bonus

for tossing a 300 game on TV

    collected some $157,000 in

    American money.

    ...The United States Bowling

    Congress, with its 2011 electees,

    now numbers 385 members, 254

    for their bowling performances,

    112 in meritorious contribu-

tions, and 19 pioneers of the

sport. That may seem like a

large number, but who cancount the number of bowlers

who have competed in the sport

for the past 120 years and

    before---five, ten, hundreds of

    millions?

    ...Hardly any top bowlers now

    use a two fingered grip---but

more and more are using a no

    finger grip---preferring some

    form of palm grip---not easy,

but effective in the right hands.

    ...Bowling can be a funny

game at times, except when the

last laugh is at your expense.

    ...Bill O'Neill, already one of

the leaders for PBA Player of the

Year for the current season, anda major threat for one of the

super stars for the next decade,

is as popular as he is talented.

And he enhances his and pro

    bowling's image when he stops

    by unannounced at junior bowl-

    ing tournaments and spends a

good amount of time talking to

    and encouraging the youngsters,

    offering tips and relating what

life on the tour is all about.

    ...Scott Norton of Costa Mesa,

    Calif., was a longtime outstand-

    ing youth bowler and star---and

still looks as though he is the

star of a high school or collegeteam. But looks can deceive and

a look deeper reveals a sharp

    attorney who received his

degree and passed the bar exam

more than a year ago. He

    passed his bowling star exam

many years ago with the help of

    his highly respected mom, hall

    of famer Virginia Norton.

...Of the 45 bowlers who made

the TV finals in five PBA World

    Series of bowling tournaments,

10 spots were claimed by bowlers

    representing foreign countries,

though a couple of them were

    repeaters. No surprise there, all

    have proved they belong.

    ...Bowling balls have been con-

    structed of hard wood, rubber,

    combinations of materials called

composition balls and all kinds of

    plastics, but no metals involved.

It has been reported that at one

    time some billiard balls were

made of ivory. I recall balls made

from the tusks of elephants, but

    never bowling balls, and never

    have seen one. Have you?

FINAL FRAMEDonna ZimmermanDonna Zimmerman, a United

    States Bowling Congress Hall of

    Famer, passed away Dec. 23,

    2010 in Thousand Palms, Calif.

    She was 77.

She was inducted into the Hall

of Fame in 1982 in the Superior

    Performance category.

    Zimmermans best season came

in 1965, when she captured the

all events title at the Womens

    International Bowling Congress

    (now USBC) Championships

and led her team to a second-

    place finish at the tournament.

    She also won the Bowling

    Proprietors Association of

    America doubles crown with

    Janet Harmon.

    For the 1965 season,

    Zimmerman was named to the

    Bowlers Journal International

    All-American team and finished

    second to Betty Kuczynski for

Bowler of the Year honors. She

    was named Southern California

    Woman Bowler of the Year.

    Zimmerman was a charter

    member of the Professional

    Womens Bowling Association.

    She earned one professional title,

the PWBA Oxnard Open in1964, and took second in three

    other events. She was inducted

into the PWBA Hall of Fame in

    1996.

    She began her bowling career

in her hometown of Akron, Ohio.

In 1952, at age 19, she became

the 27th woman in bowling his-

tory to roll a perfect game. It was

the only 300 game the WIBC

    recorded during the 1952-53 sea-

    son.

    One of her more interesting

    moments in bowling occurred at

    the 1959 BPAA All-Star

    Tournament in Buffalo, N.Y. A

severe snowstorm left her with-out transportation, so

    Zimmerman and Buzz Fazio

decided to run to the center. She

    described how they ran through

the snow and managed to arrive

at the center moments before the

    squad went to the floor.

    "The officials already had the

    alternates dressed to take our

    place, Zimmerman said. I

bowled with cold air in my lungs

all evening and was thankful to

    finish second to Marion

    Ladewig.

    That season, she also finished

    second at the World Invitational.

She also is a member of theCalifornia WBA, Southern

    California Bowling Writers, Tri-

    County, Ohio, and Summit

    County, Ohio, Halls of Fame.

++The results of the 2010 Inter County Tournament are in. The win-

ning team was from Hudson County, and their total was 7315. The

Morris County ladies came in second. They only missed first by 67

pins, which is small spread over a team of five. A total of 13 teams of

top-averaging women were entered. Morris County posted 3090.

Morris County Val Johannessen posted high game with 278.

++Noel Vega, Fredon, rolled 300-780 in the Dave Valerius Trio

league at Rockaway lanes. He has ten sanctioned perfect games, and is

averaging 234 subbing in the league. He used a Blue Hammer

Backlash drilled by Ken Yokobosky. Speaking of Ken, he himself

rolled a 299-747 in the same league sending the five pin into the 7 but

the 7 refused to fall. He has around 20-300 games and three or four

299s. He is averaging 232 in this league and used a new Storm Reign

Supreme drilled by, well, who else?++The results of the 58th Annual Robert H. Higgins Memorial

Officers Doubles Tournament are in. In the Handicap Division, win-

ners were Mary Pearson and James Winterfeld, 1475, followed by

Thomas J. Beardsmore and Anne Cohen, 1458 and Donna Sterling and

Christina Bream, 1455. Thomas and Daniel Mergenthaler lead the

scratch division with 1344. High games were posted by James

Winterfeld, 279 and Anne Cohen, 241. High Series were rolled by

James Winterfeld, 736 and Anne Cohen, 620.

++Rockaway is hosting the Rockaway Classic Trios, whose second

half will start January 25th. The league runs Tuesday nights at 9 p.m.

for a 15-week season. First place will pay $2250, or $750 per person.

They also offer the PBA Experience Winter Doubles League for an 18-

week season on Wednesdays starting January 12. Call the lanes for

more information or to sign up.
