Waiting, preparing his heart for the day God would send a Redeemer. But even as the “voice in the wilderness” John needed God’s guidance to recognize the Chosen One. He was given a sign: “On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.” So John started on the long road of his ministry. He listened and heard God’s call to preach repentance, baptizing those who came with water. And John waited, watching for the sign, until the day his Messiah appeared on the banks of the Jordan. His obedience and faithful reading of the signs enabled John to fulfill God’s promise in his life. Just like John we need to be faithful watchers today. Take a moment to ask yourself: Have I heard God’s call to my special task in life? Am I busy on the banks of my Jordan? Am I watching for the coming of Jesus? Sunday Reflection!Reading the Signs! Like generations of Jews before him, John the Baptist grew up looking for the Messiah. Waiting, preparing his heart for the day God would send a Redeemer. But even as the “voice in the wilderness” John needed God’s guidance to recognize the Chosen One. He was given a sign: “On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.” So John started on

the long road of his ministry. !

Fr. Kevin’s Cluttered Desk In the Scriptures, John the Baptist is portrayed as this rather different individual. He does not fit the usual image the people of that time expected from an prophet, scribe or Pharisee. John intrigued the people, fascinated them in many ways and people flocked to listen to him, even Herod liked to listen to him. This fascination allowed John to proclaim his message. For John comes to the people with an interesting message and his message points the people toward Jesus.

Today we have a interesting individual coming to us with a message. This individual dresses different, acts different and is seen as different, but is he truly different? Pope Francis is frequently portrayed in the media as being very different and doing such new and radical things, but is he really? A great fuss was made over Pope Francis baptizing 32 children on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, but he was not the first pope to do this and I am sure not the last. Pope Francis went to the prisons and streets but he was not the first pope to do this, John the 23rd, John Paul II and even Pius the 12th also did this, they might not have washed the feet of those in prison but they were visited and respected by the Popes.

So what might this tell us? Down through the ages God has always produced leaders to help us find our way, but all of them from the prophets on down to our Popes today have one thing in common, it’s not about the messenger, it’s all about the message. John the Baptist said it best, “I must diminish so that Christ might increase.” Every one of us by our baptism is called to be a voice and sometimes crying out in the wilderness, but it is never about us, it is about Jesus and his message. The challenge is: how do we make the “I” in each of us diminish so that “Christ” might increase in each of us and through us?

Peace Fr. Kevin
