Biodiversity is both essential for our existence and intrinsically valuable in its own right. Biodiversity is the life support system of our planet- we depend on it for the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. US ON THE VERGE OF ‘FISCAL

CLIFF’’

Curtains have fallen down on the high voltage drama of Presidential elections in USA. Stage is ready for another higher voltage drama that may not be as pleasant as the earlier one. The unfolding of the new drama named “fiscal cliff” in the United States will hit the American – and global – economy like a devastating financial hurricane. The term ‘cliff’ is used in Geography to describe a landscape in which an area rises abruptly and steeply from the adjoining area. (see above image) The term “fiscal cliff” has been coined to describe several big fiscal events that are scheduled to happen in the US economy at the end of this year and in early 2013. Some such important events are:

A number of tax cuts such as lower tax rates on capital gains, dividends, income, and estates etc, introduced by

the Bush regime are going to expire by the end of 2012. Similarly, some fiscal stimulus measures, such as the payroll tax cut and extended unemployment benefits are also nearing their end.

January 2013 will also witness automatic introduction of various spending cuts as a result of the failure of the deficit reduction super committee last year.

Lack of consensus among Republican and Democrat lawmakers on various fiscal issues will add fuel to the fire.

Combined impact of all these events could lead to as much as a four to six per cent decline in the GDP of the U.S., according to some estimates, which put simply, is like falling off a “fiscal cliff.”

At present, the U.S. economy is growing roughly at two per cent per annum. A four to six per cent contraction in GDP caused by the “fiscal cliff” would push the world’s largest economy into a recession. Coupled with the sagging European economies and a slowdown in China’s growth, a recession in U.S. could be really bad for the world. Markets have been working on the assumption that the U.S. is going to address the fiscal cliff challenge with a more gradual adjustment.
