The Accelerator Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan

The Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan was

founded in November 1975 by a group of individuals with the desire to protect and preserve the Ford Mustang as one of the most attractive and fun filled cars ever made available. We are enthusiasts of all ages with a love affair of the many generations of America’s Premiere Pony Car. Whether it’s a coupe, convertible or fastback from 1964 ½ to the new 2005 GT or the 2007 Cobra, we love them all. The mission of club members is to collect, restore and preserve the history of the Mustang along with the stories of the people and the roles that they played in making this one of the great cars of the 20th Century. Although ownership is not a requirement for membership, your enthusiasm, expertise and and/or love of the automobile are most welcome.

Many of our club members own one or more Mustangs in

varying body styles, models and years. Club members are always exchanging information, providing sources for parts, literature and helpful hints for restoring or maintaining their Mustangs. Our members are a diverse group of individuals, located throughout Southeastern Michigan and all share a great appreciation for the Ford Mustang. Our general membership meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Our monthly newsletter, The Accelerator, provides the members with reports on club activities, technical information, advertisements and business service locations and more. Some club activities include car shows, picnics, sporting events, cruise nights and technical sessions.

Membership dues for MOCSEM are $30.00 per year; [$40.00 per/yr American funds for Canadians.]

Page 3 The Accelerator

Hi everyone- sorry about not getting something new in the December newsletter. I got caught up in my other life! We finished up 2007 with the adult Christmas party that was on December 15th at Montana’s. We had 66 people participate in that and everyone had a lot of fun, as usual. The food and service were great, and the gift exchange saw a lot of good gifts and quite a bit of stealing! Had that storm not been heading our way we would have had about 10 more join in on the fun. I’ve already started sign-ups for the bowling outing scheduled for January 19th at 2 p.m.. You still have a chance to sign up for that at the January membership meeting – or call me at 313.532.4310. It will be at Merri-bowl, on Five Mile Rd. just east of Merriman. The $8.50 fee will cover 2 games of bowling, pizza, and pop. If you need shoes, they will cost only 99 cents. Sign-ups for a movie night in February started, as well. That’s scheduled for Saturday, February 23rd. Those of us who sign up will pick a movie, the theater, and the time a few days before that date.

The Board will be going over and approving the 2008 activities calendar at the January Board meeting. It will, then, be printed in it’s entirety in the February newsletter and I will have copies available at the meetings – one per household. Thanks to everyone who turned in suggestions. I have taken all of them into consideration and have tried to incorporate all or most into the new calendar year. Some of the things I have planned: movie night, chow & chuckles (dinner and a comedy club), road rally/scavenger hunt, Redford Festival & car show, poker run, and an over-night cruise. I, also, want to fit in the Gilmore Car Museum and discuss and get more information on Milan Dragway. I have kept the almost-monthly ice cream socials, monthly cruise-ins at what was Uno and is now Ashley’s, the 3 main cruises, Mustang Day @ Midway Golf (there’s a new, better entrance to the parking area), caravan to Birch Run, hayride/bonfire/potluck, and at least one cruise to Baker’s. And, of course, we will still have the Spring Swap Meet, Mustang Memories, Appreciation and Christmas Dinners, along with our monthly membership meetings at Mama Mia’s. Mike Rey wants to plan a club trip to the Buckeye Mustang National Car Show in Ohio in June, so watch for information on that. And there are always other things that are presented to the club throughout the summer, as well.

As you can see, 2008 promises to be a fun-filled year for MOCSEM. With or without our cars there will be plenty of opportunities to get together. I hope you will be able to make time for a big chunk of them – we miss you when you aren’t there. Continue to watch this newsletter for updates on all activities, and be sure to get your name on the sign-up sheets at the meetings (call me if you can’t be there and I will sign you up).

THANKS, Jenny Root

REMEMBER THE MODEL CAR

SHOW AT THE JANUARY GENERAL MEETING! SHOW WHAT

SANTA BROUGHT YOU!

If you have a cool toy and a story to go with it, send a photo and a few lines to the editor so it can be included in a future newsletter. Here is one of the coolest Mustang toys ever:

1965 Ford Mustang 2+2 Fastback Approx. 1:10 Scale Pressed Tin Lithograph

body by Nomura (TN-Japan), Made in Japan

The Nomura Mustangs were some of the largest tin friction toys ever produced. Measuring over 17 inches long, these Mustangs came in (5) different paint schemes: a regular fastback in candyapple red, a regular fastback in metallic blue, a red GT racecar with sponsor logos and rally stripes, a fire chief car with horn and sirens, and a police chief car with horn and sirens. Each of these cars feature vivid lithographic artwork and fine details like plated window trim, plated bumpers and grills, whitewall rubber tires, plated gas caps and tail light bezels, wire antennas, fully detailed interiors, and acetate window “glass”. When pushed, the friction motor makes a “whirrrrrrr!” sound to simulate the engine roar. These toys are incredibly hard to find and priced accordingly. Most of these I have seen for sale have been from Canada. They are almost impossible to find with theit original box which features its own cool artwork. Many of these cars show dents on the rooftop due to children pushing too hard on the thin metal. They are frequently missing the antennas and sideview mirrors which easily broke off. When located in nice condition, these cars sell for $200-$400.

January Car Show

Neil’s Wheels The New Year is here and there are so many things to talk about.

Even though we have already had an early dose of winter, we still have a few more months to endure. The cars are put away but this is an exciting time within MOCSEM when we plan for the coming year and generate ideas for future club events. The MOCSEM board is welcoming new some new members and we are working hard on the new club website. I look forward to having a lot of updates in the coming months.

If you didn’t attend the December meeting, you missed a couple key announcements that affect the club. First, there has been a change in one of the board positions. Bob Paul, the newsletter editor, elected to step down in December due to personal reasons. Bob has been diligent in maintaining the newsletter since April of 2006. He volunteered for the job when no one else was willing and he worked many hours each month to author original content and find items of interest. Bob made sure his material made it to the printer on time and he picked up the copies to fold, address, stamp, and mail. Sometimes he had help, but often he completed these tasks without asking for assistance. Bob has been great to work with and I can’t thank him enough for his devotion to this job. Just as important, Ken Janus has volunteered to take over the editor position and was responsible for putting together this issue. Ken will be formally appointed to the editor position at the January board meeting in accordance with the bylaws. Welcome Ken!

Another change affects one of MOCSEM’s new sponsors and cruise-in locations. The Westland Uno’s Chicago Grill location closed one weekend and reopened as Ashley’s Bar and Grill. The menu has changed with generally lower food prices and over 100 beers to choose from. The management and most of the staff are the same as before, and the manager told us we are still welcome to have our 2008 summer cruise-ins there as planned. They really want to be involved with MOCSEM and we look forward to building on the wildly successful cruise we held in the fall. When you visit, make sure to check out the 20th anniversary Mustang poster hanging in the restaurant entrance.

I would also like to thank Phyllis and Mark Berk for their years of MOCSEM service as treasurer and trustee, respectively. Besides being the people who introduced MOCSEM to Kathy and me, they have given generously of their time outside of meetings and club events to do the things needed to make sure the club operated smoothly. Phyllis has kept the club’s books for six years and both of them have put in a team effort to help manage the spring swap meet, plan the spring car show at Quality Care, and plan the swap meet at Mustang Memories. Mark has acted as a goodwill ambassador at all club events. They have earned a well-deserved break and they will get to enjoy the club from the “other side”. I am happy to welcome Greg Root (treasurer) and Phil Smith (trustee) to the 2008 MOCSEM board of directors.

MOCSEM Technical Advisors

A few months ago (more like 6 or 7), I asked for volunteers to be technical advisors for various generations of Mustang. These people will serve as contacts for members who have questions about their cars and hopefully foster some learning and exchange within the club. I lost a chunk of email earlier this year so the following list is from memory. Please feel free to contact me to add your name to the list.

1st Generation: Neil Holcomb, Ken Janus, Roger Parlett 2nd/3rd Generation: Toshi Adair, Phil Smith 4th Generation: Joe Odine 5th Generation: Ron Mason, Mike Rey

To all of the Board members, I can’t say enough, each and every one of you guys have helped me with something this past year! And I have grown close to all of you like I could have never imagined. The 2009 Ford Mustang gallops into showrooms next summer with a unique option for its 45th anniversary -- a glass roof.

The special feature, a factory-installed first in its segment, will join the hardtop and the convertible models in the Mustang stable, beginning next summer.

To ensure a comfortable driving experience, the panoramic roof is made of tinted privacy glass which reduces both vehicle cool-down time and infrared energy by 50 percent.

While allowing occupants an unrestricted view of the world above and around them, the special reflective glass reduces energy used by the vehicle's air conditioner system by 20 percent while protecting the interior fabric from fading and deteriorating. A manually-operated roller blind allows owners to block the light on bright days.

A layer of sound absorbent vinyl sandwiched within the special glass will also keep the cabin quieter by reducing noise, vibration and harshness.

The glass roof Mustang is built like the coupe and has been developed to maintain the structural integrity of the car. In development, it was put through rigorous water and air leakage tests plus durability and squeak and rattle tests to make sure it would meet the quality levels that earned Mustang first place ratings in the 2007 J.D. Power and Associates' studies on Initial Quality, Vehicle Dependability and Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL).

The glass roof will be available as an option on both the V-6 model and the Mustang GT and will be priced at $1,995 -- less than half the cost of the convertible option.

The 2009 glass roof model will be built at Automotive Alliance International (AAI) in Flat Rock, Mich., and finished at the plant's adjacent Modification Center.

When the 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR launches this spring don't be surprised if there's some confusion over what the letters "KR" stand for.

While the super car has been known to racing fans as "King of the Road” since 1968, it's about to star in a remake of the hit TV series Knight Rider making mix-ups inevitable.

"It's purely a coincidence and a nice one at that,"" said Al Uzielli a senior advisor, to Ford Global Brand Entertainment the Ford office in Beverly Hills which works to place Ford branded vehicles in movies, TV and other media. "Auto enthusiasts will know what KR stands for. But most viewers will probably think it means Knight Rider; at least at first."

In the new version, Hasselhoff returns, but the lead character is now Justin Bruening who plays Knight's long-lost son Michael Tracer. Replacing the Pontiac is the KR which in real-life is about to launch a 40th anniversary limited edition with an engine output estimated at 540 horsepower.

But Knight Rider is more than just the product integration of a Ford vehicle into a plot line; it's also a media sponsorship with commercials and promotions for Ford products interjected throughout the two hour program. If the ratings are good, NBC plans to turn the show into a weekly series this fall.

Shelby GT500KR Becomes an Action Hero

A LEGEND indeed

Exactly one year after an all-new version of the Ford Mondeo was introduced to James Bond fans in the movie Casino Royale, another Ford vehicle is about to get some major screen time in a holiday blockbuster.

Beginning Dec. 14, look for a 2007 Shelby Mustang GT 500 -- in red with signature white stripes -- to chew up the scenery and the streets of New York City in I Am Legend, starring Will Smith.

"There is no doubt that the Shelby Mustang GT 500 is the costar of the first part of this story," said Brian Daly of Ford Global Brand Entertainment (FGBE), which places Ford vehicles in movies, TV and other media. "Smith plays the sole survivor of an apocalypse who races around the deserted, gray, empty streets in this fantastic bright red Mustang. The sequences are incredible."

And Daly isn't the only one who thinks so. The movie is already generating buzz on a Los Angeles Times auto blog, where automotive reporter Josh Hancock says, "The shots of the Mustang blasting around totally traffic-free New York will be the envy of every urban driver. I lost myself in that dream just with the sound of that car growling through the city streets."

Am Legend isn't the first movie version of Richard Matheson's classic 1954 science fiction novel to feature a red Ford vehicle. A 1971 adaptation called The Omega Man put Charlton Heston behind the wheel of a bright red 1970 Ford LTD.

For designers, the first challenge of creating a screen version of the “King of the Road” 2008 Shelby GT500KR, was that the car isn’t even on the road yet. The solution was to go to Galpin Auto Sports (GAS) who is well-known for creating one-of-a-kind vehicles in the California market.

GAS had one week to create the new KITT, and they pulled out all the stops. Six people worked full time to create the Mustang that would be sent over to Picture Car Warehouse as the father of all the KITT derivatives and stunt cars.

Not only does KITT make its appearance as a GT500KR but Knight Rider fans get to see KITT in three modes – HERO, ATTACK and camouflage versions.

The HERO is a standard 540-horsepower Shelby GT500KR and the ATTACK is a further modified high-speed version.

"Ford wanted to keep KITT as close to the Mustang Shelby GT500KR as possible," Belker said. "Some may say the ATTACK version is a little over the top, but this isn't about reinventing design language, it's about being entertaining." By the time Knight Rider debuts in February, a Mustang will have already had extensive media exposure in the movie I Am Legend which opens December 17. Starring Will Smith, the story gives major screen time to a Ford Shelby GT500. Between the two roles, the Mustang brand is about to get three months worth of the kind of Hollywood visibility not often seen by one product – or for that matter one star.

The 2008 Mustang Bullitt incorporates the latest in Ford Racing Technology, as well. Beginning with a base Mustang GT, the car’s engineers tuned its 4.6L V8 up to 315 horsepower. They brought the live rear axle over from the Shelby GT500, which uses a tall 3.73:1 gear that makes the model quicker off the line. The stock GT’s shocks and struts were also swapped out for new units that increase balance and permit more aggressive driving, for those who want to channel their inner Steve McQueen. With a production run of 7,700 vehicles, this limited-edition model will be available in January of 2008.

MOCSEM CLASSIFIEDS December General Meeting – Gift Giving at its Finest

The success of Mustang Memories allowed MOCSEM to be very generous this year, both with the child relatives of club members and with Southeastern Michigan charities. We were fortunate to have Santa visit the December general meeting. He had gifts for over 25 girls and boys who were on their best behavior. Continuing on the toy theme, MOCSEM members were asked to bring unwrapped toys which overfilled a large box destined for Toys for Tots.

After the children spent time with Santa and serenaded the club with a rendition of “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer”, the MOCSEM board presented checks to representatives from local charities.

• Children’s Hospital of Michigan - $1000 • The American Cancer Society - $1000 • Rainbow Connection - $1000 • Monroe Humane Society - $1000 • American Heart Association - $750 • Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation - $750 • Toys for Tots - $500 (in addition to the donated toys) • Kirk of our Savior Church/Salvation Army for Turkey Dinner

baskets - $250

Five of the charities were represented at the meeting. The representatives thanked the club members and told about how the money would be used by their organization. The highlight of the evening was when three Marine Corp Reservists arrived to pick up the toys for Toys for Tots. They presented MOCSEM with a certificate of appreciation as the audience broke into rousing applause. This was a very proud moment for the club, and it was made possible by the hard work of club members and your donation of time and money. Earlier in the year, MOCSEM had donated a children’s Mustang powercar to The American Red Cross that was raffled at Mustang Memories. That raffle raised just over $900 as well. Overall, we had a phenomenal year. Thank you to everyone.
