This year’s guest speaker is Jerene Mortenson, the mother of Greg Mortenson who wrote, Three Cups of Tea - One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace One School at a Time. Greg’s memoir tells about his failed attempt to climb K2, the world’s second highest mountain located in northern Paki- stan. On the descent, he became separated from his group during a storm. Weak, exhausted and hungry he came upon a small village and was taken in by the chief elder. To thank the village for saving his life, he promised to build a school for the children. Since then he has built 78 schools for girls in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The title of the book comes from the Balti Proverb “The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger. The second time you take tea you are a honored guest. The third time you share tea you become family.” Tickets are on sale now for $10 each in Luther Commons and will be available in the Church Office during regular office hours. CORNERSTONE CHRISTMAS CONCERT Children share the story of Jesus’ birth. THANK YOU FOR PURCHASING POINSETTIAS From Tana, Liv, and all other children, their families, and staff at Roseville Lutheran Nursery school - thank you for participating in the Poinsettia Sale. We sold out! Monies from the sale help to supple- ment our scholarship programs and replace worn equipment. There are a number of families that have lost jobs, or had their working hours reduced. These parents are so appreciative that people would help their children have the best start in kindergarten by helping them pay for preschool. Thirty-four percent of our students do not go to any church. For many families, Roseville Lutheran Nursery School is not only their entrance into the church, but into the very beginning of faith. A heartfelt thanks go to Tom and Heidi Johnson, owners of A. Johnson and Sons Floral. The flowers are always beautiful, and the cost of the plants is heavily discounted – resulting in a significant profit on each sale! NON-PROFIT ORG. U.S. POSTAGE PAID ST. PAUL, MINN. PERMIT NO. 2168

There is a time and place for something to work out right. I remember sit-ting with my friend, How-ard, eating lutefisk and boiled potatoes lathered with butter. The fish was of the finest quality and the potatoes were done to perfection. The table was set in proper fash-ion and lefse was stacked like cord wood. The meal was anticipated for sev-eral days and expectations were high. Can’t wait. The day arrives. The familiar smell is in the kitchen and throughout the house. We sit down to a king’s feast only to be disappointed. You see, it was July. A hot and humid July day and the cooking only added to the

was rushed or pushed into a moment that was reserved for later. Sev-eral weeks ago I tasted the piece of cod that passes all understanding. It was the right time and place.

Christmas has now been turned into another memory – a pleasant one, I hope. Now come the days of winter. The longer days and darker days of winter.

It isn’t the time for pic-nics and neighborhood street parties. My expe-rience with winter days is that they force us to be more solitary – may-be more alone with our thoughts and memories. I believe it’s one of those

times our Creator built into the seasons of life. A more contemplative sea-son to read and ponder. A more intentional time of prayer and for reading the Scripture. A time to slow the pace down and focus on the present.

Epiphany – the season of the star followers – comes in the winter. Ash Wednes-day and our pilgrimage to the cross are during the cold and dark season.

Shoveling and wind chill are the harsh realities of the time also. A remind-er that warmer days are coming and the present situation does not last year around.

About that time – at the right time – the wise ones

went looking and they found that what was prom-ised was indeed delivered. It was God’s time and His timing. Enjoy the winter.

a world of help to a world in need!

This Thanksgiving, the offering at the Wednesday and Thursday services was dedicated to the famine in Tanzania. Roseville Lutheran raised $5,139 that has been sent to St Paul Area Synod program for the Tanzania Famine. Through the Thanksgiving Food Drive and your gener-ous donations, RLC raised 894 lbs of food and $558 for our local food shelf – Key-stone Community Food Shelf. Thank you for all of your support for the hunger min-istry at RLC.

Roseville Lutheran continues its part-nership with the Martin Bible School in Martin, Slovakia. The Builders Group 2010

will be traveling in July or August with the plans to refurbish two buildings for the Martin Lutheran Elementary School. The Conversational English and VBS team will be at the Martin Bible School from June 24-July 15, 2010. If you are interested in any of these missionary opportunities, there will be a 10:10 hour adult education session on February 28th.

A group of RLC members will be return-ing from Tanzania and their visit to the MaaSae Lutheran School in early February 2010. Come to the 10:10 hour on February 21st to hear their stories and experiences from this trip.

a time to say goodbye

It is with a great deal of mixed emotions that we say goodbye to our Parish Nurse, Doreen Kapfer. As so many of you know, her ministry among us was generous, lov-ing and compassionate. She has accepted a position with Presbyterian Home Care, effective January 1, but we hope to continue to see her occasionally.

Please be assured that the ministries that Doreen led and provided will be carried forward in the very best of ways. We are extremely grateful for her great work done

in Christ’s name. We will provide opportunities for the congregation to thank her in the days ahead. May God continue to bless her and keep her.

-Pastor Craig Hanson

Dear RLC family,I have been truly blessed to have been able to walk on

holy ground in ministry with you, and I want to thank you for how you have allowed me in your lives. Though I am looking forward to my new job doing home care case man-agement, I will miss working as your Parish Nurse very much. God bless you all!

A message from Pastor Dana: “It is an exciting time to be here at Cristo Rey Lutheran church. A team of young missionaries from Brazil and Venezuela came to Peru, travelling around the country for 6 months, sleeping in churches and giving their testimonies. They stayed in Cristo Rey for two weeks in November, and filled our lives with music, dramas, preaching, hip hop and Brazilian dancing! We are so thankful for their spontaneous visit. They have revived our youth group. God is good. They hiked up the hill with us to Pamplona Alta too, with their guitar and tam-bourine. (See photo). God bless you. Thank you for your love and your prayers. Happy New Year!”

We will be collecting cans and cases of soup over the weekends of January 30-31st and February 6-7th. Your donations will be sent to - Keystone Community Food Shelf. keyboardists, instrumentalists & vocalists sought

If you have a musical gift you’d like to share at one of RLC’s worship services, or would like to get involved in one of our many vocal and instrumental ensembles, contact John Helgen, Music Director at 651-288-4236 or email to [email protected]. Pianists and accompanists are needed, as well as other instrumen-talists and vocalists.

On Saturday, December 12, musicians of Roseville Lutheran (numbering approximately 175) pre-sented our Christmas Festi-val concert with the theme Come To Our Hearts, Lord Jesus. Seven RLC ensem-bles – the Festival Choir, Youth Choir, Children’s Choir, Marys and Marthas, Brass Ensemble, Jubilate Bells and Bells of Praise, along with organist Mar-tha Mutch and additional instrumentalists - joined

together in the program, which used themes from the Advent and Christmas seasons and featured cho-ral and instrumental music, narrative accounts of the story of the birth of Jesus, and congregational singing. Once again, the backdrop for our concert was one of the colorful murals created by artist David Hetland.

The concert was attend-ed by over 600 people, who gave generously toward the evening offering in sup-

“Go, Go Jonah!” our 2010 Children’s Ministry musical will be presented on Feb 13 and 14th . The cast is made up of 49 Kindergarten-6th grade young people. They are excited to begin their rehearsals in January. Over the Christ-mas break they will be working on their music at home.

This musical was previously presented in 2001. Many of the cast from that presentation will be assisting in this presentation as lighting, sound, and other technical support. Shannon Cordes and Julie Risinger, RAHS seniors, will be returning as Choreographers. They have been working and leading choreography for over 5 years.

“Go, Go Jonah!” relates the story of Jonah and his fearfulness to heed God’s call. There is much that we can learn from his story about telling others about God’s love and the truth of Scripture.

Mark your calendars for February 13 at 3:00 p.m. or in worship on

February 13th at 5:00 p.m. and February 14th at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m.

You will enjoy this presentation!

marriage enrichment workshops

While most relationships encounter conflict at some point, conflict within the marriage relationship can be especially challenging. Conflict can have the effect of decreasing or increasing the experience of intimacy in marriage - it increases intimacy when both individuals in a marriage feel that their thoughts and feelings have been heard and appreciated as they work to resolve an issue. Rebecca Bednar, a marriage and family therapist, will lead this two-part series.

parT i : confl ic T resoluT ion fr iday, january 29, 6 :30 - 9 :30 p.m.

The Friday, January 29 workshop will lead an exploration for married couples to learn new tools to solve solvable problems within marriage, and how to mediate those problems that don’t seem to have solutions. Couples will work together to uncover new ways to look at the role of conflict within marriage.

parT i i : apology and forgiveness fr iday, feBruary 26, 6 :30 - 9 :30 p.m.

The Friday, February 26 workshop will take the tools couples learned the previous month to resolve conflict one step further. Couples will explore apology and forgiveness and how these affect emotional resolu-tions.

The cost is $16 per couple per workshop or $25 per couple if you sign up for this two-part series before Sunday, January 24.

Say “I Love You” with a Lutheran Marriage Encounter weekend. Get away from the everyday demands of the world so the two of you can really focus on each other. You’ll spend two nights in a comfortable hotel and enjoy five delicious meals from Friday at 7:00 pm to Sunday at 5:00 pm. Four presenting couples, including a Lutheran clergy couple, give a series of presentations followed by questions the couples discuss in the privacy of their hotel room. There is no counseling and no group sharing. No one tries to change who you are. It’s great for couples who already have a good marriage and want to enrich their relationship, but it also does wonders for those marriages that have lost their luster through years of child rearing and work obligations.

The next Lutheran Marriage Encounter Weekends in Minnesota are Feb-
