President’s Note:

Two Thousand and Nine is drawing to an end. Memberships to ASNC-MCC are up for renewal. The good news is that the Autism Society of North Carolina has decided to embark on the new practice of roll-over renewals. So rather than memberships running from January to January, membership will be due the month you joined. For most, January is a cash strapped month; being able to send dues later is just more sensible. You will also receive notices from ASNC about your upcoming anniversary each year so renewal will be easier to remember.

Each year, many of you ask yourself, why should I join ASNC? What do they do for me? Along with pro-viding some funds from dues for printing this newsletter and maintaining our websites, ASNC provides other important services. Locally, ASNC employs two dedicated, experienced parent advocates, Nancy Popkin and Kim Tizzard. Both are parents of children with autism and both have had many of the same struggles you live with each day. They are available to work with our families, FREE of CHARGE, to help with issues relating to your community, structuring the home, and finding resources to improve your child’s quality of life. Although many parents call them for school issues, they often work in broader cir-cles. Because of training they offered, we now have programs such as: the Special Needs Assistance Line at Carolina’s Medical Center, Special Needs story time at many of the Public Libraries. They have part-nered with the Autism Foundation of the Carolinas to provide training to those in the faith community and they have provided training to area law enforcement officials. If you call Autism Speaks for the 100 Day kit, our parent advocates are the people listed for support. Our ASNC advocates do much to make Char-lotte more autism friendly for all of us, so supporting them is supporting everyone in our local autism fam-ily.

You may not be aware, but ASNC’s Maureen Morrell spends her days in Raleigh working with our legisla-tive members and other groups dedicated to those with developmental disabilities. Because of her hard work, we were able to maintain services for more people despite drastic budget cuts. In the coming year, she will continue to work hard on issues pertaining to CAP slots and insurance for those with autism. I think we all support that.

If you go to the ASNC website, you will find a support network that is available at all times. The site offers a blog, a twitter contact information, and information available through Facebook. You can sign up for e-mail blasts that will keep you up to date on the latest information from our state organization, including legislative updates. So as you finish paying your holiday bills, please remember the important work done for you and those you live.

Joining is easy. You can go on-line : www.autismsociety-nc.org and follow the prompts under I want to help. You can also print off the last page of this newsletter, which contains a membership form. Fill out the form and send it to ASNC at the address listed. Your membership makes all our lives better. Merry Christ-mas, Happy Hanukah, Happy New Year!

NEWS FROM ASNC...

Help us collect a thousand stories on the effects of state budget cuts We need your help! We need your stories! Help us collect a thousand stories through this survey to share with legisla-tors, the Governor, Department of Health/Human Services staff, and LME Directors. They need to know how budget cuts for developmental disabilities, mental health and substance abuse services affect the lives of individuals and fami-lies across the state. There are three different surveys, one each for:

For Individuals and family members of people with disabilities who have lost some or all of their services within the MH/DD/SA system (including residential and vocational). If the individual or family member fears losing services but hasn't yet, fill out the survey now and then again if and when the person does lose some or all of their services. Click here to complete the survey.

For Providers in the MH/DD/SA system who have cut services, employee salaries, benefits, hours, etc. Click

here to complete the survey. For Employees (current or former employees of MH/DD/SA providers) who have lost or experienced reduc-

tions in hours, salary, benefits etc. Click here to complete the survey. Please take a few minutes and complete the survey. The survey will be active between December 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. If you have problems accessing the survey or need assistance, click here to contact Maureen Morrell, Director of Gov-ernment Relations, and she will arrange for a parent advocate to assist you. Thank You for completing the survey– Your story is important. Please share these surveys with others who have been affected by state budget cuts. Sincerely, The Autism Society of North Carolina 800-442-2762 www.autismsociety-nc.org

In a wonderful interview with Dave Belk, the actor talks about his passion for acting and the importance of raising awareness for autism to others. His recent movie, The Last Passport, premiered on October 21st at the Epicenter and was produced by Lucky You Films. Mr. Belk was very excited about this movie and his fervor for acting shows through the conversation of how he achieved acting. Being as one of his favorite things to do, his passion for acting began during his high school years. In one of his school performances, he even starred as Santa Claus during the Christmas season.

Through the great support and help of his friends and family, he has been able to pursue this dream. His first professional role as an actor was at CCPC for a role starring in Death of a Salesman. Nowa-days, Mr. Beck enjoys the festive event of being on the red carpet and being treated like a star. Ulti-mately, his happiest moments as an actor include accepting the part and saying the line to act out the character for the role.

He also enjoys many genres of movies such as comedy, drama, action, and romance. However, his favorite movie is, Backdraft, which is a firefighter movie. Interestingly enough, becoming a firefighter happened to be his second passion. Anyone who has met Dave can testify to that fact. Other interests that he enjoys include trains, fire engines, and sports.

An intriguing fact about Dave Belk is that while being an actor, he is also autistic and was diagnosed at the age of 13. Although he had many ups and downs, he learned a lot of things, such as controlling high to low sugar content. Throughout it all, his parents were al-ways there to support him with advice and words of encouragement. Having his sister and brother-in-law accompany him to the Charlotte Premier of The Lost Passport, was another nice token of support for him.

Mr. Belk is also passionate about raising awareness for autism because it helps others learn about acting normal around autistic people. Although some people are confused on how to respond, teaching them how to behave would make good impact for all of the other people with autism in our community. Helping others learn about autism is very important to Dave and he advises to people that they should be aware of the signs of autism and they should they find themselves with someone having autism, they should treat them respectfully, as they would anyone else. Not only is becoming an actor a big accomplishment, but being autistic while achieving this great goal is an even bigger achievement. With his increasing talents as an actor and fervor for raising awareness for autism, we will definitely be hearing great things from Dave Beck in the future!
