May a bright and prosperousNew Year bring happiness

to you and yours. My Lady Bobbi has been the

chief proofreader and copy editorsince the beginning, and also as-sists with the typing and conver-sion of input from the writers(simply couldn’t do this withouther.) Many nobles and ladies con-tributed to photos this year, thanksto Malcolm Van Dyke, II, Bud Glid-den, Bob Rodd, Al Cobb, Jim Smith,Phyllis Copher, Louise Hall andEmeritus Recorder Bill Batten forbeing there to help us record im-ages of our events. As always, Iremain especially grateful to Bar-bara Hays, she is Sahib’s account-ing assistant, she keeps track ofthe billing for our advertisers, shedoes such a great job!

Visits to the Sahib Shrine Web-site has been averaging about 1,400per month. Clown Unit, Sahib Re-porter Magazine archives, ShrinersHospitals for Children, FridayWebletter, Sahib Shrine Circus,

Pipes & Drum Unit and rent ourSahib hall pages average the high-est amount of visits. Our Web cal-endar <http://prem.calendars.net/sahibshrine/>, is still averagingabout 200 visits per month. Lastyear we started a Sahib ShrineTwitter page <http://twitter.com/sahib shriners>, 240 are followingus, but few are our members, no wayto know how many just check thepage periodically, I’ll keep promot-ing Twitter—for a while anyway.

Due to lack of interest (by Sahibleaders and members,) I will nolonger post events on our onlineshopping page. You can still payfor annual dues and booster dona-tions online if you want.

Thanks again to the manynobles and ladies that support theReporter Boosters Program, theycontinue to help offset the highcost of printing and mailing themagazine.

Don’t forget, units and clubsstill get a 25% commission for newReporter ads!

The beginning of a New Yearalways brings to mind the need

to make resolutions. Resolutions!Resolutions! Will we keep them orwill we forget them?

Let me repeat some suggestionsfrom Ann Landers:

“Vow to do some things you’vealways wanted to do, but could notfind the time.

Make an effort to stay in closetouch with family and friends.

Find time to be kind and help-ful. Give a complement. It mightgive someone a badly needed lift.

Apologize when you realize youare wrong.

Don’t blow your own horn (toomuch).

Express gratitude and givecredit where it is due.

Read something uplifting anddon’t abandon your old-fashioned

principles. They never go out ofstyle.

Clean out your closet. If yousee litter on the sidewalk, pick itup instead of walking over it.

Take pleasure in the beauty andwonder of nature.

Walk tall and smile more. You’lllook 10 years younger and don’t beafraid to say, ‘I love you’. If youhave love in your life it can be thebest year ever.”

And, don’t forget the children inour Shriners Hospitals for Children. They need us to be their friends. That’s what we’re all about; share afunny story with them. A goodlaugh with someone can sometimesbe the best medicine.

Above all else, let this New Yearbe a blessing for good health andenduring prosperity. Alleluia!

Potentate Elect’sNotes

Nobles,

We have passed through the last Ceremonial for 2012 without incident,December Christmas Parades and parties along with certain individualInstallations of Club Officers have also passed. I was asked by GulfShrine Club to install their 2013 officers on December 21, at TaraCountry Club. What an honor that was.

We have had our Installation of Divan Officers and Club/Unit Officers onWednesday, January 2. The ladies were also invited. After theInstallation we had dinner and dancing by Taylor and Taylor.

The installation affair was meant to pull the nobles together. We havemuch work to be done, but we can mix this with pleasure. I’m hoping theDivan’s service to Sahib Shriners and their families will facilitate thisprocess. Let’s all look for the positive.

In that regard, please remember Hospital Days Co-Chairs Tim Kinchlaand Bill Long and what a great job they and their crews did. In 2013 let’slook to break records. Let’s all give Tim and Bill a job well done.

Happy New Year to All!

Yours in the Faith,

William “Bill” H. Zurlo, Potentate

I would like to first thank all of those for theirsupport and encouragement to elect me to the

office of Chief Rabban. Being an officer at SahibShriners is like a dream come true. I get to help withdecisions, raise monies for the children in ourShriners Hospitals for Children and have tons of funwith some of the greatest people that I know.

Being a Shriner is one of the greatest things thathas ever happened to me. I especially get excitedwhen I get to go up to the Tampa hospital and get tohave fun with the kids. I’m hoping this year that allof our Shrine nobles that find themselves lost withnothing going on look deep down on why they became

a Shriner, and hop on board here at Sahib. The morethat get involved, the easier the job at hand. I was oneof those lost Shriners after demitting to Sahib in1982. It took me several years to find my place here, but when I finally did, I never looked back. So, I’masking everyone to just try to give a little extra thisyear and help our Potentate keep Sahib the best darnShrine in all of North America, if not the world.Remember, this is your Shrine we are all here for thesame thing. Have fun to help the children of ourhospitals.

Thanks for all the happy memories you create forme and keep up the good work! Your Chief Rabban.

Apparently, the Mayan calendar was wrong; theworld was supposed to end on December 21,

2012. It didn’t. That means this writer and the MotorCorps are back for 2013. It also means I’ll have tocome up with some witty, if not totally accurate anderror-free news about the whereabouts and happen-ings of the Sahib Shriners Motor Corps. Wish meluck.

We hope everyone had a joyous holiday seasonand a Happy New Year. The Motor Corps looksforward to an active year and is willing to participatein many activities throughout the coming year. Un-der the leadership of President Hampton Crimi(Sambo), we expect to have a busy year.

The Motor Corps participated in the Decemberholiday parade in Sarasota. Unfortunately, we were

unable to participate in the North Port parade. Wealso participated in the ceremonial parade at theShrine on December 1. We had 12 bikes in the Cer-emonial Parade and the Sarasota Holiday Pa-rade. The Ceremonial Parade was special for one ofour members. Barry Hart's son, Jake, joined SahibShrine during the recent ceremonial.

The Motor Corps Christmas party was held atSahib Shriners on Saturday, December 15. We had agreat choice of food entrees: Prime Rib, RoastedCornish Game Hen or Shrimp stuffed with crab.Musical entertainment was provided by Taylor &Taylor. Hospitality was great and we all were able toparticipate in the spirit of the holiday season.

As we go to press, we received no responses to ourDecember Quotable Notable quiz. It was former Re-publican Senator and Presidential Candidate RobertDole who recently wrote upon the passing of formerDemocratic Senator George McGovern, “We wouldcome to understand that our most important com-monality – the thing that would unite us during andafter our service on Capitol Hill – was our shareddesire to eliminate hunger in this country and aroundthe world.”

So here’s our January quiz. What locally retiredDistinguished Research Professor of Law wrote ofthe usual scandal of Florida’s dysfunctional electionsystem, “The right to vote is the most fundamentalright in a democracy. This is what many have giventheir lives to protect. We make a fundamental errorin placing the responsibility for administering elec-tions in the hands of state and local partisan officialswho often use their position primarily to gain parti-san advantage or who are simply incompetent.”

The first non-club member to identify this Quot-able Notable at the above email address or phone(941) 429-6882, wins a free Tuesday morning break-fast for two with the North Port Shrine Club.

glasses. We’ve also been promised a few bottles ofmixers and some other items closer to the drawing. The local Winn Dixie store has always been support-ive of the Shrine activities.

We only have two birthdays and one anniversaryto report in January. Gary Nickols (Stumpy) willcelebrate a birthday on the 18th and Lady Peggy SueMitchell on the 31st. Mike Harrell (Beefy) and LadyKim will celebrate an anniversary on the fifth.

Guess that’s all the news from the Motor Corpsfor January. Notwithstanding any surprises or revi-sions of the Mayan calendar, the G-man will be backin February.

The East-West Shrine Game: “More than Just a Game”

The East-West Shrine Game® is the longest running college all star football game in the country, and has consistently proven itself to be a stepping-stone to the NFL. For example, more than 60 players from the 2012 game launched their professional career this fall. Currently, 40 of the players in our 2012 game are on active NFL rosters, 19 are on NFL practice squads, and the two Canadian players made Canadian Football League squads.

Clearly, the game draws significant attention from the NFL

A player’s performance in the practice sessions and in the game can make or break his chances for an NFL career. Since the game’s inception, 69 players from the East-West Shrine Game have been inducted into the National Football League Hall of Fame and more than 100 alumni are in the College Football Hall of Fame.

The annual event has launched the NFL careers of many players including Tom Brady, Greg Jennings, John Elway, Willie Roaf, Shannon Sharpe and Brett Favre.

“The most important thing is that these players have a chance to make it into an NFL club,” said Harold Richardson, executive director of the East-West Shrine Game. “Our goal is to keep improving the quality of players every year. That’s one of the keys to growing the game.”

More than Just a GameIn addition to being an important step in the careers of aspiring professional football players, the East-West Shrine Game also benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children®, a health care system that has given hope and healing to more than 1 million children, regardless of their families’ ability to pay.

The East-West Shrine Game is “More Than Just a Game.” In addition to providing an opportunity

for top college football players to showcase their skills, the East-West Shrine Game gives the players, spectators and television audience a chance to learn more about the life-changing work of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

On the Sunday leading up to the game, players witness first-hand the true purpose of the game when they visit the local Shriners Hospital. During the hospital visit, players and coaches participate in games, crafts and several other activities with the patients. This chance to interact with the patients is the highlight of the East-West Shrine Game experience for many of the players.

The 88th annual East-West Shrine Game will take place on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. The game will be broadcast live on NFL Network with a kick-off time of 4 p.m. EST.

The Sahib Shrine Banjo Band will not be perform-ing its usual shows in 2013. A significant number

of band members are dealing with health, family andother issues and will not be able to participate fully,if at all.

After so many continuous years of performing forthe benefit of the Shriners Hospital for Children, we

regretted having to make this decision. Band mem-bers that are available will meet regularly at SahibShriners to play, practice and work together.

We hope and expect to be back to full strength forthe next season.

Well fellow Shriners and ladies, we are back andrunning; and running is the best word. A thank

you to “Slivers,” for entertaining the children at TheCamp No-Limits party.

We started the season off with the Venice SunFiesta Parade on October 20. Then came the PancakeBreakfast on the first Sunday, “OK OK” was in rareform, I was there too.

We had a wonderful time in the Venice HolidayParade, November 24. We wooded and doomed thenew candidates, November 28, along with the Cer-emonial Parade and then the Sarasota Santa ClauseParade December 1. Boy, what fun we had at theShrine Kids Christmas Party, Saturday December 8,always such a pleasure to see their faces light up.

A special thank you to all for their contribution tomaking the Manatee’s Santa’s North Pole Kids Partyat the airport a success; pleases us to no end to makethese kids so happy.

We certainly enjoyed our Holiday Party at theShrine on the December 18. Glad to see so manyClowns out.

So, fellow Shriners and ladies, all of us Clownswant you to wear a happy face starting January 1 andall through out the next year.

God Bless you and yours, and especially the beau-tiful children we serve.

Happy New Year to all nobles and their ladies;also a very successful year 2013 for Sahib

Shriners. It surely will be a very challenging year forour temple and we wish Ill. Sir Bill Zurlo and LadyStacey Lee the very best.

December sure was a busy month for the OrientalBand, starting with the Sarasota Christmas Parade. The sidelines probably held the largest number ofspectators we have ever seen. It was wonderful to

dent. I expect to make very few changes as our pastpresident; Charles Hamilton did an excellent jobduring his tenure. His will be a tough act to follow. We will continue to have our get togethers and runaround in our little cars having a great time. We area very cohesive group and have a lot of fun togetherwith family get togethers, competitions and parades!

I hope that everyone had a joyous Christmas andthat the New Year brings happiness to all. If you arereading this, the world did not come to and end onDecember 22 and I am glad for that. If you are notreading this, then the Indians were correct and noone cares now anyway!

See you all around the Shrine!

see such a large number of children along the roadand their enthusiasm was overwhelming. Whoeversaid that there are only “old” people in Florida?

The Oriental Band also wants to thank Ill. SirCharles Levan, 33° for arranging that most welcome“Afterglow,” after the parade. It was much appreci-ated. Many thanks to Don Clements for providing hisvan to pull our float at all parades!! Sure beatswalking.

Of course, the Children’s Christmas Party is thehighlight of our performances, mainly because weget the kids involved in the program and they enjoyit immensely. Many thanks to Tom Perez in pullingsome strings in getting several guitars to be givenaway to the children as prizes.

It was nice to get together with other units for thecombined Christmas Party. Food was good and the

company outstanding. I made and raffled off an old-time Santa. The proceeds are going to the “Ladder ofSmiles” at the Shriners Hospital for Children inTampa. The amount of dollars raised and the luckywinner will be mentioned in the February Reporter.

Important dates to remember are January 2, -Installation of Officers, January 19, East/West ShrineFootball game and January 30, - Rusty Mason Night.

December was an extremely busy month for theDivan with all the activities we are invited to attend. When this note is published, Sandy and I will haveattended the Venice/North Port Christmas Party, the annual Stated Meeting, the usual luncheons, three parades, Childrens Christmas Party, BingoVolunteered, Birthday/Anniversary Dance, LadiesLuncheon, closed on a new home, moved, joined theKing Pins Party, Manatee Holiday Party, All UnitsChristmas Party, Gulf Christmas Party, Bingo Din-ner etc., etc., etc. It’s truly very, very busy!!!

This past year as Oriental Guide was a true chal-lenge! We had no 2nd Ceremonial Master, the 1stCeremonial Master was frequently absent due towork requirements so I picked up much of the slack.I hope we have better luck for all this year.

Be sure to get in touch with Chief Rabban Rockyif you plan on going to the East-West Shrine footballgame at the Trop. in St Petersburg on January 19. Asof this writing, he still had seats on the bus andtickets available.

The Rusty Mason Reunion is January 30, at6:30 p.m. in the main hall. If you are a little rusty andwant to refresh yourself, this is a great place to do it.Please invite your Masonic friends or neighbors tojoin you.

Remember, the Shrine Circus will be coming soon. Are you ready?

If we can be of help to your unit or club, please ask,for your Divan is here whenever you need help be-cause we are a Shrine family.

A “Special Thanks” to Sarasota Kennel Club forhaving Sahib Shriners Day and the nice donationthey made to the Shrine. Thanks to all who came outand helped by selling tickets.

Stay healthy and remember those who are not!!

Treasurer’s notesby Kenneth Shipley, [email protected]

I am looking forward to the East/West ShrineGame activities this month. We had a great time lastyear volunteering and attending. There may still bea few tickets left! Give Rocky a call!

My golly; how time flies! If you are reading this, all the talk about the end of the world on

December 21 (according to the Mayan calendar)proved to be as lethal as the fear about planes fallingfrom the sky on New Years day 2000. I am sure muchof the talk I heard this past week (last week ofNovember) is also just fear, however, is cause forsome concern. This week we had our Memorial ser-vice and our Fall Ceremonial. We memorialized 68Sahib Shriners in a beautiful service. It’s too bad thatmore nobles could not fit it in their schedules tohonor their brothers that were called by the blackcamel to work with the Supreme Architect onSolomon’s Temple in the Sky. They deserved betterbut that is not my point.

Only a few days later, we held our Fall Ceremo-nial. I was impressed by the number of units thatrepresented the varied activities of Sahib Shrine atthe candidate’s cocktail party. It was a fine showingand several units got real interest from the twocandidates that showed up. The actual ceremony wasperformed fantastically by our very dedicated Ritual

team with roars of laughter from the 25 guests andnon-participants. Also too bad that more brotherscould not fit it into their schedules to welcome theirfive new brothers and appreciate the hard work ofthe team. Again, they deserved better but again, thatis not my point.

My point is actually about the concerns and fearsexpressed at those events. The obvious one was thatwe lost 68 brothers and only replaced them with 15this year (ten in the spring and five in the fall).“Pretty soon we will have to shut down because therewill be no one left”. The second alarm was expressedabout how this impacts our financial picture and howwe couldn’t possibly survive the decline. I am verysure that both issues are just as much smoke and fogas the “Y2K” and “Mayan calendar” bunk.

I’ll compare Sahib Shrine to a great football team.We have the talent and great skills to be the WorldChampions. We have the best of goals with our SuperBowl being our very successful Shriners Hospital forChildren operations and the million plus childrenwe have helped. We have the “fan” support as they

The Scribners have bought another home so ournext few weeks will be settling in. We’ll be at 155Grand Oak Circle, Venice, FL 34292.

Enough for now, see at the temple.

always cheer us at our parades and fill our contain-ers at our events. However, just like the greatestfootball team that ever existed, we have to show upand play the game. You can’t just wave the flag, wearthe jersey and cheer from your armchair. A greatfootball team is always looking for more talent. Agreat football team is always revising their gameplan. A great football team is always pulling togetherand not letting petty differences interfere with theirultimate goals.

As we begin our 31st year as Sahib Shriners, let’sthrow a few New Year resolutions in the game plan.1. Ask a friend or neighbor (non-Shriner) to attend

a Shrine event with you. It could be a PancakeBreakfast, Hillbilly Dinner, Birthday/Anniver-

sary Dinner Dance, or just a drink at the bar.You may just end up with a better friend andneighbor.

2. Resolve to come off the bench and participate intwo additional functions than you normallywould. You just might find a new friend inattendance or a new talent.

If everyone would only do those two tasks, therewould be no concerns for membership or finances. Both would take care of themselves and in turn takecare of your fraternity. I wish everyone a fantabulousNew Year and remind you to support your BlueLodge (that’s where many potential new nobles re-side).

In a few days most of the elections would be overand everyone should be filled with excitement and

Religion and FreemasonryThe following written by Brother and Reverend LeeS. Donahue appeared in The Short Talk Bulletin ofAugust 2000 regarding the office of Chaplain. Rev.Donahue was an ordained Presbyterian Minister inCanada and served the Grand Lodge of Quebec asGrand Chaplain.

“The office of Chaplain was instituted in the earlyyears of English Speculative Masonry. The Englishterm “Chaplain” refers to a minister or other clergyofficiating in a private chapel. It is this office whichis charged with the offering of holy prayer. It wasadopted when men of great intellectual curiosity —authors, musical composers, architects, philosophers, churchmen, men of the aristocracy, from both royaltyand the nobility — were streaming into the vast poolof enlightened men who had been attracted to thispeculiar and unique organization which they learnedhad been founded on piety and virtue. In Masonrywere men, congregated together, who were devotedto the brotherhood of men under the fatherhood ofGod, and engaged in the search for truth, the relief ofthe indigent and the protection of virtue.”

Masonry is not a religion. Masonry is not a reli-gious order or religious organization of any kind.Masonry is not meant to replace religion in a man’slife.

Be that as it may, however, prayer is an essentialpart of the form, substance and content of Masonicassemblies and meetings. Men in the Masonic Orderdenied the right of dictation by any church, wereconscious of the tendency by any church, and wereconscious of the tendency to persecution by govern-ments under whose protection they resided. In thisvein, they initiated the prohibition of religion andpolitics as discussion topics within the lodge. Thisprohibition is jealously guarded to this day. Ma-sonry, nevertheless, is so far interwoven with reli-gion as to lay men under obligation to pay rationalhomage to the diety which at once constitutes theirduty and their happiness. It leads the contemplativeto view with reverence and admiration the gloriousworks of creation and impresses them with the mostexalted ideas of the perfection of the Creator (to becontinued in the February 2013 issue of The Re-porter.)

As we celebrate and welcome the New Year, let uspause and reflect on what this meant to our

forefathers. New Year’s Day was celebrated as a dayof renewal of vows, of vocation and of vision. It was onthis day that the guild members took their annualpledge, that husband and wives renewed their mar-riage vows and that young believers reasserted theirresolution to follow the ways of the Great Architectof the Universe.

On this New Year, we should be thinking aboutrenewing our pride in our fraternity, its teachingsand its beliefs. We should renew our desire to keepMasonic light shining for all to see. Remember, whenwe look to the heavens on a clear night, we see manystars—or do we? Astronomers tell us that what we

see are rays emitted from stars many years ago andjust reaching our vision today. So it is with ourfraternity. Many teachings and attributes were de-veloped years ago and each generation has adoptedthem and tried to live by them. It is our job to keepthis light shining so those who follow us can benefit,as we have, from that which our ancestors left for us.As we begin a new year, let us reaffirm our vows andobligations so we can make our fraternity shine inthe coming year.

Scottish Rite will meet on Monday, January 14 at7:30 p.m. for installation of officers. A dinner will beserved at 6:00 p.m. Ladies and guests are welcome.Reservations for dinner are requested at (813) 886-0578 or <www.srstampa.org>.

self, but many of your Brothers that have placedtheir trust in you.

By your actions you continue to prove that socialpromotions for title seekers continues to plague ourFraternity, perpetuate the fallacy of electing Broth-ers that have simply been in the line without reallyperforming their duties and responsibilities and justfilling in ‘til we get to the top, only to prove they haveno leadership position and will let everyone down.

So after you have completely taken the luster andprestige that the title of Worshipful Master deserves, you have lowered the standards to another low andhanded Freemasonry another blow, by dishonoringits hallowed halls. Remember that you may have thetitle, however your peers have your reputation in

their hands when they share with your Brethren thefact that you didn’t earn it. But worst the fact thatyou squandered yet another opportunity they sogracefully placed in your hands.

Up to now we have been discussing the threedifferent types of Worshipful Masters that will beinstalled soon after December 27, 2012. Now we needto point out the Worshipful Master every Lodgeneeds. All of our Lodges need to have and shouldhave the very best Worshipful Masters that can pos-sibly be made with dedicated Brothers. The Brothersof the Lodge need to remember their responsibili-ties in electing not a buddy, but a Brother trulyqualified to meet the challenge of the Lodge and

propel Freemasonry to greater heights. This should be everyone’s thought whengoing to Lodge on election night.

The Worshipful Master that we needin every Lodge is one that is amiable, intelligent, with a good business sense, aplanner, a communicator, someone thatcan inspire men and most importantlysomeone that will leave a legacy of lead-ership by inspiring and teaching hisBrothers how to lead in his absence, atrue mark of leadership.

We also need to discuss the type ofBrothers that should make up a goodLodge. This Brother in my estimationneeds to be pretty much like the Wor-shipful Master. He needs to be friendly, bright, understand how important he isto the success of the Lodge and be anactive participant in his Lodge. Theseare the type of Masons we need if we areto move our Fraternity forward.

These brothers need to be familiarwith our Laws, Rules and Regulations sothey will know when the Lodge is beinggoverned in a proper or arbitrary man-ner. They need to know if the Mandatory

. . .continued from page 43“Fail to plan, plan to fail”

Committees are being appointed andmore importantly if they are fulfillingtheir responsibilities. All too often thesecommittees fail to do their job and no oneis the wiser for it or at least do not bringit to the attention of the WorshipfulMaster or the Lodge.

After looking at the many reports fromthe DDGM’s I can tell you that many ofthe committees appointed at the Lodgelevel are not functioning properly, or donot have a proper understanding of theirresponsibilities as described in the Uni-form Code of By-laws. More especiallythe Finance, Petitions, Investigation,Masonic Education, and Vigilance Com-mittees, and we are in desperate need ofBrothers that serve on these commit-tees to know their responsibilities be-cause many times over the officersincluding the Master does not have agood understanding of their duties andresponsibilities; to the extent that someof them do not even name the Investiga-tions Committee, which they wrongfullyallow other officers or side liners to ap-point. Another failure can be found inthe way the Finance Committee func-tions and their lack of performance inthe Lodge which can lead the members

to have a false sense of the Lodge Fi-nances for their lack of reporting or un-derstanding their duties andresponsibilities.

My Brothers all of us can make adifference by electing those Brothersthat have Masonry’s best interest atheart, No Social Promotions, no buddypromotion, only qualified Brothers needapply so to speak. Get involved in yourLodge business after all you have some-thing at stake, it is your Lodge. “Be aLeader Make a Difference.” your per-sonal involvement will bring you twofold in satisfaction and fulfillment forhelping your Brother and your Lodge.

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

January 2013 SAHIB REPORTER Page 45

I hope you all had a wonderful 2012 and have manygood memories and maybe some photos to look

back on. I know for some of you the year could havebeen better but we have to be thankful for the thingswe have and not dwell on the things that we wantedbut didn’t happen.

Looking into 2013, I would request that you startthe year out by helping our children who are treatedat the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa byjoining with others and me who have become a part ofthe Plaque Program. Let’s us start this year by help-ing our Shriner children have a better year than theywould have had if we were not there for them.

Are you aware that since the Shriners Hospitalfor Children system started throughout the U.S.A.,Canada and Mexico we have helped almost one mil-lion children? Yes, I said close to 1,000,000 children. Are you aware that we do not turn away a child, ifthere is a reasonable possibility they can benefitfrom the specialized services available? The areaswe work with include orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries as well as cleft lip and palate.Hopefully you also are aware that “regardless of thepatients or families ability to pay” they will be treatedif it is something we cover.

Our Plaque Program is designed as a five-yearprogram that you donate $100 or more per year, which amounts to just over $.01 per hour for the year. Each year you make the determination what tax-deductible amount you will donate to assist ourShriner children ($100, $125, $175, $300, $500, $1,000or what amount you can give with a minimum of$100). In fact if you really had to, you could skip ayear, but hopefully you will not have to do that.

The big question is how do we accomplish that? This is where you and I are able to assist.

I know you may be thinking that the ShrinersHospital for Children system has a very large endow-ment fund which they do have. Those funds only takecare of part of the yearly needs for the system. Theydo not use the principle but just the earnings, andfrankly, that does not cover what is needed to do the

work properly. For 2013, all Shriners Hospitals havehad their budgets cut out of necessity and our ownTampa Hospital has had their budget cut by$3,000,000.

Be Burn Aware: A Campaign to Prevent Burn Injuries

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is determined to decrease the number of preventable pediatric burn injuries by raising awareness. One program in this effort is the annual Burn Awareness campaign, which began more than 20 years ago.

During the first full week of February, our public relations efforts emphasize Burn Awareness Week, the kickoff of a year-long educational campaign aimed at burn awareness and prevention, including offering free educational materials via our website. The items, including posters, activity books and fact sheets, are designed to be a resource for firefighters, teachers, parents and others concerned with the safety and well-being of children. Many of the items are available in both English and Spanish.

We don’t often think of it, but without some attention and awareness, our homes can be dangerous places, especially for children. Homes are the sites of thousands of burn injuries to children every year, including scalds and fire-related injuries. Many of these incidents could have been easily prevented by following and implementing some basic safety tips.

“At Shriners Hospitals for Children, preventing burn injuries and providing burn awareness education is a concerted, continuous effort,” said Kenneth Guidera, M.D., chief medical officer, Shriners Hospitals for Children. “In 2013, our campaign, ‘Be Burn Aware,’ focuses on teaching children ways to avoid burn injuries at home, with a particular emphasis on scalds. Scald injuries account for a large percentage of pediatric burn injuries, and many of them are preventable.”

The campaign features two child-friendly characters who showcase and share our messages. Boots and Brewster – a caped, cuddly bear and a googly-eyed teapot – are featured in activity books for children ages 3-7 and 8-12. The engaging pair lead the children through the various rooms of a house, pointing out dangers, and how to easily correct or avoid them. The coloring pages, word searches, cartoons, and other activities are designed to grab the children’s attention and present the information

in a memorable, age-appropriate manner. The campaign also includes a poster of safety tips, as well as materials emphasizing prevention of scald injuries.

“Shriners Hospitals for Children is committed to improving the lives of children,” said Richard Kagan, M.D., chief of staff, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Cincinnati and member of the physician executive team. “Many burn injuries that occur in the home are easily preventable; we hope that our ongoing awareness and prevention campaigns will reduce the incidence of these injuries.”

Previous years’ efforts have emphasized prevention of gasoline and gasoline-related burn and scald injuries. All available materials can be viewed and ordered at www.burnawareness.org.

Shriners Hospitals for Children is also assisted in its burn prevention efforts by members of the Shriners fraternity, who promote the campaign in their local communities in a variety of creative ways.

The Burn Awareness Week campaign includes these age-appropiate activity books, which are designed to teach children how to avoid burn injuries.

New Patient Referral Process Approved at Imperial Session

Great news! It is now easier than ever to refer a patient to Shriners Hospitals for Children®! At the 138th Annual Session in July 2012, the attending delegates approved amendments to the Colorado Bylaws 509.2 and 509.3 which simplified the way for patients to access Shriners Hospitals. Patients/families no longer need to fill out a two-page application form that must be processed before being considered for treatment. While this is a big change for our system and YOU, we want to assure you that our Shriners are more important than ever in finding children that need our help; as well as informing the public about the noble mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children. We need your participation now, more than ever, to reach more patients. This new process makes it easier for our patients and will still allow for engagement with the nobility. Travel and transportation support should not change. Contact your Shrine temple or hospital if you have questions.

This new intake process continues to support your valuable referrals, without the added step of completing a patient application. Instead, simply provide patients/families with the Shriners Hospitals for Children patient referral card, which may be obtained from your hospital or Shrine temple. In addition, a new Patient Referral Form will be forthcoming in the near future. However, the referral card is preferred, with the patient/family calling the hospital’s referral intake line directly. Why? This is the quickest and most convenient way for a patient to get the care they need.

When did this start? In October 2012, Shriners Hospitals simplified the process

for our new patients; allowing immediate scheduling for an appointment if their clinical needs meet the hospital’s scope of service. To avoid any confusion to our patients or the community, temple staff are asked to no longer use the application form and remove any reference to a patient application process in temple materials or website. Thank you for your continued hard work in helping the children. Please contact your local Shriners Hospitals facility if you have any questions.
