MARTIN LUTHER KING BIRTHDAY SHABBAT CELEBRATIONFRIDAY NIGHT, JANUARY 18, SPECIAL 8:00PM TIMEour synagogue will join with our African American neighbors, led by Reverend
Dr. Clifford Johnson of Shiloh Baptist Church, to commemorate thebirthday of slain Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King’s
life fills me with awe; his death fills me with sadness. The image of Dr. King walkingarm in arm with the late Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heshel, in the front row of marchers atSelma back in 1968, represented the pinnacle of Black-Jewish relations in this country.
In a dramatic presentation we perform each year, Reverend Johnson will read the wordsof Dr. King, I will read the words of Dr. King’s beloved friend, Rabbi A.J. Heschel, while Pastor Cheryl Jensen of Peninsula-McCabe United Methodist Church willshare the memories of Susanna Heschel, daughter of Rabbi Heschel. In our worktogether, over these past three years, we have begun to lead our respective communitiesanew, in a relationship based on friendship, respect and understanding among ourrespective Black and Jewish, Jewish and Christian communities.
In an effort to strengthen these friendships, we have once again been asked to participate in the Mentoring Program atWarner Elementary School. If you have already participated and want to reconnect with your student from last year, this isnow possible. If you have never participated before, now is the time to start. Please contact Volunteer Coordinator MariHorsie, at 302-651-2740, ext. 161, and she will send you out an application form and coordinate a one-hour weekly slot foryou.
Both King and Heschel truly understood each other and the needs of each other’s communities. They both appreciated theirresponsibilities to lead their fellow Blacks and Jews to work together to reform American society, based on theirunderstanding of Biblical scripture.
Moses was such an important Biblical role model for both King and for Heschel. It was this mutual appreciation and use ofMoses in their respective sermons, speeches and writings that bonded these two men in their holy work. At the 1963Conference on Racism, Heschel said, “At the first conference on religion and race, the main participants were Pharaoh andMoses. Moses’ words were: ‘Thus says the Lord, the G-d of Israel, let My people go that they may celebrate a feast to Me.’While Pharaoh retorted, ‘Who is the Lord, that I should heed this voice and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, andmoreover I will not let Israel go.”
Rabbi Heschel then linked this Biblical passage directly to the plight faced by African Americans back in the early 60's.
He wrote: “The outcome of that summit meeting has not come to an end. Pharaoh is not ready to capitulate. The exodusbegan, but it is far from having been completed. In fact, it was far easier for the children of Israel to cross the Red Sea thanfor a Negro to cross certain university campuses.” Heschel said that “racism is worse than idolatry. Racism is satanism, unmitigated evil.” Remember when Heschel is saying this. He was speaking out at a time when many universities wouldnot welcome Blacks on to their campuses, when segregation was an accepted policy in many states in this country.
Believing that King’s use of the Exodus story to further African-American Civil Rights would be strengthened if he were toparticipate in a Passover celebration, Heschel invited King and his wife to his family’s Seder, to take place on April 16 th. Amere thirteen days and an assassin’s bullet separated Dr. King and Rabbi Heschel from moving their relationship to the nextlevel, and moving their two communities closer together.
Please join Reverend Dr. Clifford Johnson, Pastor Cheryl Jensen, and other clergy for our Dr. King BirthdayShabbat Celebration Friday night, 8:00pm, January 18.

HEBREW SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
CBS HEBREW SCHOOL CELEBRATES HANUKKAH!
Our students celebrated Hanukkah as a school on Sunday, December 9th! We invited our friendsfrom Adas Kodesh to join our Hebrew School for the fun-filled day! We started the day with aschool-wide sing-along session followed by a reading of Eric Kimmel’s, Hershel and the
Hanukkah Goblins. Students were then divided into teams and rotated between four stations: HanukkahJewPardy, Dreidel, Hanukkah cookie decorating, and Hanukkah card decorating. The program endedwith a school-wide game of Hanukkah-themed Bingo led by parent volunteer, Falana Walls. Upondismissal, students enjoyed sufganiyot (jelly donuts) and levivot (latkes) sponsored by the Men’s Club. The school-wide Hanukkah celebration served as a fun and hands-on assessment of the learning that tookplace in classes during the month leading up to the holiday as well as an opportunity for students andparents to enjoy some Hanukkah fun together.
The following Tuesday 12/11, the Hebrew School met at the Kutz Home to brighten up Hanukkah for the elderly and sick.We sang songs and blessings over the Hanukkah candles and handed out Hanukkah cards that were made at the HebrewSchool celebration the previous Sunday. Students came away from the experience learning about the importance of bikkurcholim (visiting the sick) and gemilut chasadim (acts of loving kindness).
We want to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped to plan our Hanukkah celebration and Kutz Home visit.Your support and energy are invaluable!

OUR CANTOR
SHABBAT SHIRA: A SHABBAT OF SONG
The chanting of Parashat Beshallach, specifically Exodus, Chapter 15, has alwaysbeen one of my favorite moments in the Jewish year, and not only because it wasmy Bat Mitzvah Parasha. This weekend in the Jewish calendar is often called
Shabbat Shira (Shabbat of Song) because we chant Shirat HaYam (the Song of the Sea). This is the famous passage that recounts the experience of crossing the Red Sea intofreedom. When the Israelites crossed the sea safely, they praised G-d triumphantly anddeclared their faith through this poem we call Shirat HaYam. If you happen to bebrowsing through a Torah, this is one of the easiest portions to spot because of itsunique layout. The poem is in a brick on half-brick formation. Although this passagecomes up in Parashat Beshallach (usually landing in January or February), it is apassage that many Jews chant every morning during the Pesukei D’Zimra service. Thispassage is also chanted on the seventh day of Pesach because it is a time when weremember the miraculous exodus from the many years of slavery in Egypt. Perhaps themost famous excerpt from Shirat HaYam is:
Mi Chamocha Ba-eilim Adonai?Mi Kamocha nedar ba-kodesh,Norah tehillot oseh feleh?
Who is like You, Adonai, among all that is worshipped?Who is like You, majestic in holiness,Awesome in splendor, working wonders?
We chant this excerpt every morning in the Shacharit service and every evening in the Ma’ariv service. I believe that thefrequency that it appears in our liturgy says something about the importance of the text. Had G-d not rescued us at the sea,we might not be here today.
Perhaps what sticks out most to me about Shirat HaYam is the special melody we sing it to. The melody, one of the mostancient melodies of our tradition, has two parts, A and B, and it is associated with the journeys of our people. Weincorporate this special melody each time G-d’s name is mentioned. This melody is so special to our people that we not onlysing it when we chant Exodus Chapter 15, but also when we read about the seven days of creation, the Israelites’ journeysthrough the wilderness, and also when we say Hazak Hazak V’Nithazek! (“Be strong, be strong, and may we bestrengthened!) each time we finish reading one of the Books of the Torah. It is traditional for congregants to rise and singthis song joyously, as if we were standing on the banks of the sea having personally experienced the miracle. I rememberthe first time I chanted this text on my Bat Mitzvah. As the entire congregation rose, I felt as if we were the Israelitescelebrating the moment when G-d rescued us at the sea. There are two forms of the Shirat HaYam melody: Ashkenazic andSephardic. I would venture to guess that our congregation is more familiar with the Ashkenazic version which is often sungin the form of a call and response melody. Many have described the Ashkenazic variation to sound free flowing andimprovisatory and the Sephardic variation to sound more metrical and structured. Although one might say that theAshkenazic and Sephardic versions sound quite different, when looking at both melodies notated, it becomes apparent thatboth melodies are closely related; however, it is unclear which of the two melodies came first.
This year, Parashat Beshallach falls on Saturday, January 26th. I hope that you all will come to service at CongregationBeth Shalom to hear this unique moment chanted to the ancient Shirat Hayam melody. If you would like to learn to sing thespecial Shirah melody, please stop by my office! My door is always open!

GOT KIDDUSH?hrv[ Nya xmq Nya MaIm en kemach ein Torah“Without sustenance there is no Torah” –Pirkei Avot 3:21
This year your dues statement includes a new addition—a request for a voluntary$36.00 contribution to help sponsor onegs and kiddushes when there is no “event”
or sponsor available on a given Shabbat.
Fiscal restraints over the past few years have not permitted funding from our general budget for this laudable tradition. It isa time-honored Jewish value, beginning with the first Jews, Abraham and Sarah, to provide hospitality. We would like tooffer at least a basic oneg or kiddush for our guests as well as our congregants on every Shabbat. Beth Shalom strives to bea warm and caring congregation. In addition to providing “sustenance,” the time spent following services promotesdiscussion and socializing. All donations will be tracked separately and only used for the purpose of providing onegs andkiddushes. Please consider this additional contribution.
