Foundation C.A.R.E.S.Every year, Executive Assistant Anne McLoughlin organizes the Foundation C.A.R.E.S. program, where Foundation staff can donate school supplies (or cash for the purchase of school supplies) for the students of Kellogg Polytechnic Elementary School.

With these donations, the Foundation was able to deliver numerous supplies to the elementary school, including pencils, crayons, construction paper, and more.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Foundation C.A.R.E.S.!

Dear Colleague:

Thank you for helping to make our “Annual Holiday Event” for the employees of Facilities Planning & Management at Cal Poly Pomona such a huge success! Our holiday event was held on December 13th, and for the lucky winners in our drawing, your gift-in-kind donation was received with great enthusiasm!

We greatly appreciate your contribution and value your support. Thank you again for helping to making our event so special.

Most sincerely,

Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc. (CPPF) recently appointed Associate Director of Dining Services Aaron Neilson to Interim Director.

Aaron offi cially assumed his new position on Saturday, December 15, 2012, after Dining Services Director Brett Roth retired. For the

last twelve years, Brett has been an essential leader of CPPF Dining Services, and has assisted with the opening of several dining venues, including Poly Fresh, Denny’s, Vista Market, Subway, Qdoba Mexican Grill, and Einstein Bros Bagels.

“Brett has done such an amazing job for the Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) community and the Foundation. He is a builder; Brett built just about every restaurant you see on this campus. Just when you think that the campus cannot support another restaurant, he opens one with huge success. Qdoba and Subway

are great examples of this. I only hope that I can continue building upon the legacy that Brett has started,” expressed Aaron.

For the last twenty years, Aaron has worked in higher education food service, including the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; the Claremont Colleges; Loyola Marymount University; the University of La Verne; and Chapman University. He has also been involved in the renovation and construction of resident dining facilities. With his many years of experience and expertise, Aaron is eager to work on a number of future developments.

“We have a solid management team in Foundation Dining, and I look forward to working with them to continue to bring quality food, service, and innovation to the campus. I am particularly excited about the new resident dining facility currently in the planning stages for Phase I of the Housing Master Plan,” said Aaron.

During his two year tenure as CPPF Associate Director of Dining Services, Aaron has undertaken and completed numerous signifi cant projects for the dining venues on the CPP campus. These accomplishments include the completion of the CaterTrax online ordering system for Kellogg West, Subway, Round Table, and Peet’s Coffee and Tea; the addition of the Grab N’ Go meal program and the Health and Wellness Center in the Los Olivos lobby; and the implementation of online menus for Los Olivos, which can be found on LCD menu boards at each platform with nutritional analysis. Furthermore, Aaron oversaw the renovation in the Los Olivos lobby, helped implement room service at Kellogg West, and is a current member of the Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) committee.

Congratulations, Aaron Neilson!

Dining Services had a strong 2012, and plans to keep the fervent momentum by researching an app for ordering food from specifi c locations, developing performance plans with the management team, refreshing the look of their vehicle fl eet, and acquiring a CPPF food truck.

Employment Services also has a lot in store for 2013. According to Director Dennis Miller, “2013 will off er Employment Services the opportunity to improve its existing services to our employees and retirees. We will work to enhance our benefi ts programs by looking

at initiatives that encourage employees to engage in healthy behaviors, such as smoking cessation programs and programs that otherwise promote lifelong wellness, and will take steps to integrate healthcare reform features into our benefi ts program. We will upgrade our Kronos platform and implement the performance management functionality of Kronos. And, we will utilize more advanced technology for capturing time for nonexempt employees with the use of ‘Touch Terminals.’ During 2013 we will revamp our website with the main goal of improving ease of navigation. Finally, we will review progress with our newly implemented supervisory and management training program and make adjustments where necessary.”

Just like Dining and Employment Services, Marketing is prepared for another remarkable year. Th e 30th annual Hot Dog Caper will occur this September, and they will attempt to make this celebration grander than previous years. Th ey will also continue improving Foundation websites; creating eff ective brochures, fl yers, and signs; implementing strong social media marketing tactics; and keeping their innovative and creative minds alive!

Foundation Facilities has many projects in store for 2013 as well. For instance, they will repaint the exteriors of Bronco Bookstore (Building 66) and the Foundation Building (Building 55) to give them a fresh and renewed appearance.

Th e Financial Services department expects to accomplish many tasks this year. M.I.S. plans for Disaster Recovery System implementation, Mobile Device Management System installation, Virtual Desktop Interface (VDI) and Windows 8 testing, a Kellogg West System upgrade, and a OneSolution upgrade. Accounts Receivable will be developing a new aging report that will be more user-friendly, while Accounting will be training and testing in OneSolution for Accounts Payable, Purchasing, and Fixed Assets modules.

Th ere was a lot to celebrate in 2012. Now there is a lot to look forward to in 2013 ...Looking Forward to Another Year

11

Real Estate also has various plans for 2013. Th ey expect to lease at least two more vacant units at CTTi before year end, negotiate a ground lease with California Avocado Commission for Pine Tree Ranch use, close the two escrows they opened in December, and commence preliminary planning on Spadra. Additionally, they also expect to begin discussions with California Highway Patrol for a possible site location on campus, complete a marketing piece for Innovation Village, and launch the newly revised Innovation website. Lastly, Real Estate plans to gain a few more homes back and either re-sell or lease them to incoming faculty or staff when the 2013 academic year is near.

With the new, paperless check-in process and several renovations, the University Village had a strong 2012. Th eir 2013 future also looks promising. Th ey intend to refurbish Phase II with the replacement of kitchen cabinets in all apartments, and replace bathroom vanities in Phase I. Furthermore, they plan to implement a two-step installation of an electronic door locking system, resurface the Village pool, and replace the Village gate arm systems and security camera system.

Bronco Bookstore implemented several programs last year, and hopes to expand them in 2013. Th ey also intend to add more rental titles and increase their Tech Department’s promotions.

Kellogg West began renovating their lobby and dining room near the end of 2012, and expects their restorations to be completed in early 2013. Th eir updates will contain neutral hues, modern pieces, and lovely, new artwork.

From renovations to new dining venues, the Foundation had a powerful 2012, and according to each department’s plans, 2013 appears to be just as promising.

You Will Be Missed ...We are sad to announce the passing of Los Olivos employee Lidia Maya, and her two daughters Sonia and Francisca Anahi.

Lidia, age 51, Sonia, age 25, and Francisca, age 12, passed away in an automobile collision on Tuesday, December 18, 2012.

“Lidia was a remarkable person full of energy and happiness; her smile and good humor most defi nitely made my day more enjoyable...her sudden passing has left a void that will be diffi cult to fi ll,” expressed Executive Chef Arnold Zavalza.

Los Olivos General Manager Patrick McCoy also had a tender message to share.

“Lidia will be sorely missed by all who knew her, but especially those of us who have had the privilege of working with her. Los Olivos and Kellogg West have indeed lost a vital member of our extended families. Lidia will be remembered with a smile by all of us, every day.”

To help the Maya family through this diffi cult time, donations will be accepted in the Foundation building (Building 55) in the Employment Services department until Friday, January 11th. Every bit helps and is deeply appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Furthermore, if you would like to share your condolences with the Maya family, there will be a card to sign in the Employment Services department.

Many CPP Pepsi Machines Now Accept Credit Cards

Nowadays, paying by credit card is a popular and easy way to purchase items, rather than paying with a large bundle of cash. Because of this reality, Pepsi Bottling Group has made a huge investment with purchasing credit card reader units for vending machines.

In November 2012, Pepsi introduced nine credit card readers to the Cal Poly Pomona campus vending machines, including two machines at Kellogg West, the Bronco Student Center (Building 35), and Building 9; and one machine each at Building 2, 8, and 61.

These additions not only enhance the convenience of using vending machines, but they also help increase the sales. Credit card readers have proven a 10% to 20% lift in vending volume on college campuses. In fact, as of December 2012, the machines located at Building 9, Building 2, and the Bronco Student Center, are already up 11% versus the previous year.

Pepsi plans to add 25 more credit card readers to the Cal Poly Pomona campus machines in 2013. As a result, staff and students will be able to conveniently choose between cash or credit when purchasing their desired vending machine item.

New Year. New Kellogg West.As everyone knows, Kellogg West has been undergoing a “little bit” of a transformation over the past couple of weeks and we are almost there. It has been challenging at times (to say the least) and while it’s all coming together, and will look great when completed, we still have just a little more to go before getting there.

On our front desk/lobby and conference areas side, we are about 90% completed with our front desk area and 80% completed in our conference areas. We still have our stairway to fi nish, art work to hang, photo panels to hang, and furniture to install, plus a whole lot of big time cleaning just about everywhere. Right now we are shooting for a completion of the front desk and lobby by Friday, January 4, followed by the conference areas next week with the deadline of January 9.

In our Dining Room, we are probably about 70% completed but still have a lot more to do to meet our January 9th deadline. Most of the hard construction and painting is completed but now comes new fl oor tile, new airwall partitions, new dining room entry doors, electricians hanging new lights, new beverage station/hostess station and buff et units installed, and new furniture. A last minute frenzy of to-do’s and a clean-up like you can’t even imagine—You think your home gets dusty? You ain’t seen nothing like our kitchen, dining room, and offi ces!

Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion coming soon to a Kellogg West near you!

During the month of November 2012, the Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) campus community had the opportunity to review CPP dining venues through the annual National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) Dining Services Survey. An impressive total of 1,356 surveys were submitted.

Participants had the chance to win a 16 GB Apple iPad valued at $499.99, a $100 Cal Poly Pomona Foundation Dining Services gift card, or two meal passes to Los Olivos Dining Commons. Survey-takers were able to review as many CPP dining venues as they wanted—the more they reviewed, the higher their chances were at earning a prize.

The winners were selected in a random drawing from among all eligible entries received, and were announced on December 5, 2012. Nine lucky participants claimed a prize—six people won Los Olivos lunch passes (Gabriela Contreras, Jennifer DeJolie, Jennifer Lee, Maria Osuna, William Ortiz, and Yvonne Campos), two individuals won a gift card (Catherine Taylor and Tiffany Hernandez), and one grand-prize-winner took home the iPad (Lauren Bailey).

Congratulations to all of this year’s NACFUS Dining Services Survey winners!

The Results are in!Th e winners of the 2012 NACFUS Dining Services Survey

To kick off the New Year, we’re glad to announce that the Bronco Bookstore will be receiving the Facebook All-Star award from Connect2One for the second consecutive year.

Th e All-Star award recognizes our ability to consistently keep students engaged and interactive on Bronco Bookstore’s Facebook Page throughout 2012.

With that being said, we’d like to share with you a few of our favorite posts published on the Bronco Bookstore Facebook page this past year.

Buzzer Beater – Posted on February 25, 2012We shared a YouTube link to a clip of the Cal Poly Pomona Men’s Basketball game where a buzzer beater was made in double overtime from beyond half court! Th e game winner sent a chill down our spines and we were glad to be able to share the excitement with over 2,000 people who were as equally enthused.

Photos from Photo Booth with Billy Bronco – Posted on April 17-19, 2012Th is past graduation season, the Bronco Bookstore provided a 3-day photo booth event where graduates were able to snap a photo with Cal Poly Pomona’s mascot, Billy Bronco. We always enjoy every chance we get to give back to the students and to be able to see the positive emotions created by these photos was very rewarding.

Draw Something Buyback Edition – Posted on May 30, 2012Instead of constantly reposting a Buyback ad that may be overlooked by our audience, we wanted to try something that would catch their attention. With that in mind, we piggybacked off the hype of Draw Something and manipulated a screen capture to promote Buyback. Our online community responded positively and the post gained a greater amount of feedback than any other previous Buyback post had generated.

Summer Sale Photo Album – Posted on July 19, 2012Th e photos in this album were exclusively for our Facebook page and were inspired by various apparel lines that we both follow and admire. We took an edgier approach with the style of this shoot to showcase BroncoGear, as well as the Cal Poly Pomona lifestyle.

Welcome Back, Broncos #CPP1stDay – Posted on September 20, 2012We posted a real-time photo on the fi rst day of school at Cal Poly Pomona. Th e image was well received by our audience and it’s always nice to be able to share an experience that resonates with our audience to establish a stronger communal bond.

And the Facebook ALL-STAR Award Goes To …
