Friends:
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! As we start out the
New Year, no doubt many of you are
looking at changes being made—
changes in the world, changes in your
personal life, changes at church. Every
January I propose to myself that I
CHANGE just one thing—take more time
to read---that I become a better cook—
that I take a class in something that I
consider to be OUTRAGEOUS—but in
February I realize I am right back to
where I was in December. CHANGE IS
HARD.
At Apostle, I think we really need to
start realizing that things have already
changed and we haven’t quite caught
up. We are no longer a neighborhood
congregation, most folks have to drive
to church rather than walk. We no long-
er are a congregation of more than
1,000 but rather about 188. We have to
rejoice in the fact that we are STILL a
congregation and quit living in what I
call the “glory days”. Those days are not
coming back anytime soon. We need to
embrace the here and now and look to
see where we can join God in His ever
changing work.
PARADIGM SHIFT is a term you hear a
lot out in the world, especially the
church world. Simply put, a paradigm
(pronounced paradime) is your world
view. We all look at the world around us
in accordance with a certain paradigm.
The paradigm we use depends on what
we believe is reli-
able and true.
Think of a para-
digm shift then as
a change from one
way of thinking to another. It's a revolu-
tion, a transformation, a sort of meta-
morphosis. It just does not happen, but
rather it is driven by agents of change.
We have CHANGED at Apostle. Because
of the changes made, we need to re-
think much of the work of the church.
We might have a different way of calling
committees together; we might have a
different way of engaging folks in minis-
try. That may not feel good to some of
you who have served long and well for
many years. But in today’s world, com-
mittee work is MUCH different than it
was in the “glory days!” As I tried to
teach my children, there is always sev-
eral ways to get to the same location.
That doesn’t mean one way is better
than the other—it just means it is DIF-
FERENT. The way that one person runs
a committee may very well be VERY dif-
ferent than the way it has been done in
the past. NOTHING is carved in stone so
that if what we try doesn’t work, we can
adjust and move on. What we simply
CAN NOT DO is be comfortable just sit-
ting and saying “We have never done it
that way before!” and hold tight to those
ideals that no longer serve us well. I
learned a long time ago that WE HAVE
NEVER DONE IT THAT WAY BEFORE is
indeed the words of a dying church.
Change is going to happen whether we
embrace it or not. Why not look for a
creative way to join in God’s change and
enjoy the ride!!!?? You never know
where God might surprise you!!
See you in church, Cathy

The Milwaukee Presbytery hosts a day of learning and fun for all Presbyterians every
year—the event is called DISCOVERY DAY.
This year, Discovery Day is Saturday February 23. It is VERY unique this year as it is a
two part program. We will begin at Southminister Presbyterian Church in Waukesha at 9 AM with our called Presbytery meeting. At 12:15 PM we will head to Carroll Universi-
ty, just down the road a bit for the remainder of Discovery Day. This year’s theme is SEEING GOD IN SURPRISING PLACES. There are some brochures in the church office,
you can also go to this link to view the event. You can also register for the event using this link, after the first of the year.

ACTS OF APOSTLE Page 3
Dear Family and Friends, December 3, 2012
During the past four months, the Anuak Bible has been picking up speed in its journey to the
printer, an encouraging contrast to earlier days. We are thankful for answers God is giving to
prayer.
In August 2010 the Bible Society of Ethiopia (BSE) gave our translation team the typeset first
proof copy of the Anuak Bible. In February 2012 we returned it to them, having marked over
1,000 corrections. We hoped the corrected proof copy would be returned to us in June or July; it
finally arrived as an emailed pdf copy the first week of August. Friends offered to print the pa-
per copy on their laser printer. After three days of steady printing, they gave us the 1,700 page
final proof copy. Desaleny and Ajulo, the team’s Anuak translators, checked the paper copy in
Addis Ababa, while Marie Lusted (Breezy) in Waxhaw, NC and the two of us in Greeley
checked the computer pdf copy. Using Skype, the whole team was able to discuss corrections.
The main one was to change “Anuak Bible” to “Anyuak Bible” on the Title Page. Desaleny and
Ajulo said this was necessary because Gambella Region’s government and schools now use
“Anyuak” instead of “Anuak”. It is also closer to “Anyuaa”, the Anyuaa’s name for themselves.
Only 20 corrections were needed and were submitted to BSE.
In November word came that the typesetters had made the corrections so that the Bible could
be approved for being published. Along with it came the BSE’s Project Form; for the 10,000 Bi-
bles requested, the printing and related expenses called for payment of $65,776. A BSE grant is
providing $20,000 for the printing and related expenses. The remaining $47,776 is being provid-
ed from contributions friends and churches have made to the Presbyterian Church, USA’s Extra
Commitment Opportunity (ECO) Anuak Bible Project, and from three PCUSA Foundation
grants. When this has been received by the United Bible Societies bank account in Britain, BSE
will give the order for printing the Bibles. They will have a brown vinyl cover and strong bind-
ing to prepare them for the hot dry seasons and humid rainy seasons of Gambella Region of
western Ethiopia and Jonglei State of South Sudan, the home areas of the Anyuak people. Most
of the copies will be for Gambella Region Anyuaks, but copies will also be going to South Su-
dan, Kenya, USA, Canada, and Australia.
We give thanks and rejoice that the Anyuak Bible is on the verge of being printed. There will be
additional expenses down the road, particularly provision for subsidizing the purchase price for
Anyuaks living in areas of very low income. We believe that purchases of the Bibles will call
soon for a second printing.
We are thankful for the many who have had a part in the Anyuak Bible’s reaching this point –
Anyuak translators and text reviewers, translation consultants and instructors, computer pro-
grammers and instructors, those who have been praying, and those who have given financial
support.
We will be leaving Greeley December 10, arriving in Addis Ababa December 12. We will be help-
ing prepare for the arrival, distribution and selling of the Bibles. We will be grateful for your
praying for us and those with whom we will be working in the days ahead.
Pray that the Bibles will be printed, arrive in Ethiopia and be available by May, before the
rainy season begins in Gambella Region and Jonglei State.
ACTS OF APOSTLE Page 4
Pray for Desaleny and Ajulo as we wind up our years of working together with them and Breezy in
translating the Anyuak Bible. Desaleny and Ajulo will be looking for new employment.
Pray for our working with BSE and Eastern Gambella Bethel Synod (EGBS) personnel in preparing
for the arrival, distribution and selling of the Bibles, and for EGBS leaders as they prepare for the
celebration of the arrival of the Bibles.
Pray for our talking with Synod leaders about Bible teaching.
Pray for Breezy. At present her back problem blocks her being able to return to Ethiopia. Pray that
improvement in her condition will open the way for her to return for the celebration.
Pray for our travel and health.
We trust that as the Anyuak Bible comes into the hands of Anyuaks, the voice of God will speak to
them as they read in it, opening to them salvation and life in Jesus Christ. Pray for this.
As we come into the Christmas season, we send our greetings, thankful for the humble birth of our
Lord and Savior, and the life He has opened to us.

“UPCOMING EVENTS“
“NEW YEAR 2013”
The beauty of the season is almost behind us. But the beauty of the new
year is upon us.
As we look forward to praising God through music in this new year, may
we always be reminded how the sounds and words from each song reach
our hearts and minds so differently. The writers of our hymns and
anthems work wonders as they place the notes and harmonies in such a
magnificent order so as to make the words seem as though they are com-
ing right from the mouth of our Lord right into our hearts.
The many hours that went into preparing for our Cantata, music for the
Advent Season as well as our Christmas Eve service, was a joy and an in-
spiration to all those devoted singers and musicians involved.
My hope is that the music of 2013 reaches inside your soul and brings you
delight in knowing our Lord, the Savior born just a few days ago.
Blessings,
Carl
