WHAT’S HAPPENING AT TROOP 296 Star Project at Sunday Friends By: Aditya Mamtora, First Class, Troop 296

On December 2, 2012, I had my Star project at Sunday Friends (http://sundayfriends.org/). Sunday Friends is a non-profit organization, which gives a working alternative to charity. The purpose of Sunday Friends is to help economically challenged families by teaching them work ethic so that they can earn play-acting money. This play money can be spent in the Sunday Friends store to buy much needed household items for parents and toys for children.

I chose Sunday Friends as my Star project because I have been volunteering there since June 2012, and felt that it is a worthwhile cause that strengthens and helps the local community.

The event was held that day at the Blackford Elementary School (1970 Willow St., San Jose). There were 15-20 families who came over a period of about three hours. Amog K. and Saikiran V. from Troop 296 also volunteered to help with my project – we were shopping guides, played games, and served refreshments. As shopping guides, we took the families into a small storage room where we helped them pick out essential household items. We played educational games with young kids that taught numbers, the alphabet, and money. I played monopoly with a four-year-old boy and showed him how to count money.

Finally, since this was a holiday volunteer session, we also helped serve drinks like apple cider. We took cider containers, warmed them ourselves and then poured drinks for the volunteers and families alike.

Helping out at Sunday Friends with my Scout buddies was my Star project, and I was glad that it allowed me to spread holiday cheer, while making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

For the first time you can reserve a spot at the Cub Camp of your choosing NOW! We are accepting early reservations for individuals and $20 reserves your sons place per camp. Full payment is due by 2/28/13.

RELIGIOUS EMBLEMS CORNER by Patrick Wilson, Religious Emblems Coordinator

Website: www.bsachaplain.org, Email: [email protected]

Scout Sunday and the Scout Sabbath are quickly approaching. The anniversary of Scouting is February 8th and Scout Sunday usually falls on the Sunday before of on February 8th and the Scout Sabbath is the following Saturday. Officially Scout Sunday falls on February 3rd this year and the Scout Sabbath falls on February 9th.

If a church or temple charters your unit, offer to show your gratitude for their charter by offering to do flags and take part in the church service as a unit. It does not have to be on Scout Sunday or Sabbath, My church is holding Scout Sunday on the 10th this year. The key is that this is a perfect opportunity to say “Thank You” for their charter and providing a meeting place and resources for your unit.

Scouts Should be encouraged attend worship services in full uniform on Scout Sunday or Sabbath, regardless of weather there is an official event sponsored by the church or not. This is a great opportunity to shine in the community and bring awareness to others about Scouting and Scouting’s emphasis on “Duty to God”.

Religious Emblem Highlight

Do you have any Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) Scouts in your unit? Friends Committee on Scouting serves to encourage and promote the faith, history, and testimonies of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) through religious education programs for Quaker Scouts and other similar youth organizations.

The program consists of two progressive awards:

That of God Award, which is for Young Friends in the second to fifth grades. Although intended for this age group, first graders may also attempt the award if appropriate

Spirit of Truth Award, which is for Young Friends in the sixth to twelfth grades and Venture Scouts.

Participants must be members of Boy Scouts of America and be members or attenders of a Monthly Meeting or Friends Church. This includes active participation in the life of the Meeting or Church, regular attendance for worship and, if applicable, business meetings, as well as First Day or Sunday school or religious education at a Quaker school.

TRAINING - OUTDOOR LEADER SKILLS

TRAINING - BEARPAW (WINTER CAMP TRAINING)

Bearpaw is our Council’s winter-weather program designed to have Scouts participate in snow camping, sleeping in a warm snow shelter, cooking great meals, participating in organized games, along with general fun.

BearPaw outdoor camping experience is February 22-24, 2013 at Cisco Grove Campground on Interstate 80 (five miles past Emigrant Gap). We can easily accommodate an unlimited number of

participants. Everyone checks in on Friday, February 22 and sets up camp. A leaders meeting will be held that night. On Saturday, all events are for fun with Camporee style games. There should be lots of fresh powder to play in. If one has not tried activities in the snow such as making a warm snow shelter, cooking, sleeping or playing games, they are missing a unique opportunity to create a lifetime of memories. On Saturday night there is group campfire. At BearPaw, one can play volleyball, football, soccer, or dodgeball “in the snow” plus try out cross-county skis which will be made available to everyone!
