“The things I want to know are in books; my best friend is the man who’ll get me a book I ain’t read.” — Abraham Lincoln Harold Dillon would have been that man. He
was in the book business for 54 years. He
loves everything about books. They have
always been a part of his life and have been
the catalyst in meeting very interesting people.
When he managed the Princeton book store,
Albert Einstein would send his housekeeper to
order books from Harold. He asked the lady if
he could come by and get Dr. Einstein to sign a
copy of his book. She definitively said, “no”.
The next day she said Dr. Einstein would like
to sign the book and meet him, but she re-
minded him that he could only stay a moment
because Dr. Einstein was so busy.
Harold went and they spoke a little about used
book stores and how nice it would be to own
one. Shortly after this conversation the
housekeeper marched in and announced that
Harold had to leave.
He also had the opportunity to take Alastair
Cooke to the airport. While on the way,
Mr. Cooke asked Harold if he could play golf
and if there was a course nearby. There was a
course and they certainly did play. In fact,
Mr. Cooke helped Harold improve his swing.
He also met Oppenheimer, Lauren Bacall and
James Michener. When he lived in Denver,
Colorado, his job for Michener was to take him
out to a different restaurant once a month,
while Michener wrote and finished Centennial.
Let’s sum this up with why Harold loves books with another quote. “Books are humanity in print.”— Barbara Tuchman

Health Matters:
Pulling Your Own Weight
If you're interested in feeling stronger,
healthier, and more vital, Courtyard’s new
fitness challenge and class, “Pulling Your
Own Weight” is for you. This strength-
training program was developed to help
you gain the strength and knowledge
required to pull yourself up off the ground
after a fall. This six week challenge begins
the first week in January and will end with a
one hour fall prevention class on February,
11th.
Pulling Your Own Weight (PYOW) is an
exercise program involving strengthening
exercises—exercises that have been shown
to increase the strength of your muscles,
maintain the integrity of your bones, and
improve your balance, coordination, and
mobility. PYOW is a six week program
consisting of two 30 minute classes per
week with special attention to the core
muscle groups. Strengthening the muscles
of your core -- comprised of your stomach,
back, hips and pelvis -- improves all
functional movement, increases balance and
stability, recovers posture and reduces the
risk of falling. Without a strong core, other
muscles pick up the slack to accomplish
everyday movements, which contributes to
injuries and reduces overall functionality.
Although the main focus of the program is to
strengthen the core muscle group, each
week will also include layering on exercises
that focus on smaller “assisting” muscle
groups.
Come to the Summit Room to pick up a flyer
on how to get involved in the Pulling Your
Own Weight Challenge. All participants who
finish the six week program will receive a
certificate of completion and qualify to attend
the fall prevention workshop in February for
free. Let’s reduce the amount of falls at
Courtyard…let’s start Pulling Our Own
Weight!

The light turned yellow, just in front of a man in a Honda. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. A tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustra-tion, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cell phone and makeup. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, the policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk, where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. The policeman said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. I no-ticed the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so naturally… I assumed you had stolen the car."
Three mischievous grandmas were
sitting on a bench outside the
senior center, when a grandpa
walked by. One of the grandmas
yelled out, 'Hey, we bet we can tell
exactly how old you are!'
The man said, 'There is no way you can guess my age!
One of the ladies said, 'Sure we can! Just drop your pants and we can tell your exact age.'
Embarrassed, but anxious to prove they couldn't do it, he dropped his drawers.
The ladies asked him to first turn around a couple of times and then jump up and down several times. Determined to prove them wrong, he did it. Then they all said in unison, 'You're 87 years Old!'
Standing with his pants down around his ankles, the old gent asked, 'How in the world did you guess my age?'
Slapping their knees, high fiving and grinning from ear to ear, the ladies happily crowed.....
'We were at your birthday party
yesterday.'
