At CERN, the international particle physics lab near Geneva, Switzerland, scientists are preparing to restart the history-making Large Hadron Collider. It’s a 16-mile-long circular racetrack of sorts, designed to smash protons together at near light speed.
During the giant atom smasher’s last run, scientists discovered the elusive Higgs boson subatomic particle – thought to be responsible for giving all the stuff in the universe its mass. This time, running at higher energy, scientists hope for another great discovery that will change what we know about the particles and forces that make up our universe.
ON THE COVER
NOVA: Big Bang Machine Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 8 p.m. on NET1
Mark Leonard NET CEO and General Manager Proud NET Member
verall, 2014 was a very good year for NET. Member
contributions are up, in fact, we’ve added more than 1,000 new members to our family of 25,000 financial supporters. We appreciate each and every one of you – and hope you enjoy watching and listening to the programming that is made possible by your gifts. Recently, I testified before the Nebraska Legislature’s Education Committee as part of its review of lottery funds allocated for education (LB 497). I had three minutes to describe the tremendous potential NET’s Virtual Learning Library has to address educational challenges facing Nebraska schools, and establish a case for future financial support of the initiative. More than 4,500 Nebraska educators are using the classroom materials available in the NET Virtual Learning Library. The committee appeared both impressed and excited by the potential for NET to expand its role in statewide education. NET is deeply rooted in the education of young children. Premium PBS Kids programs such as “Sesame Street” and “Curious George” are partners for parents
and teachers who want to inspire and nurture a love of learning in children. The NET Virtual Learning Library is an extension of our work. NET’s statewide network of transmitters ties the state together, offering not only education and entertainment, but also emergency communications in a time
of crisis. Financial support from the State of Nebraska and the University of Nebraska are essential to maintaining your statewide network and ensuring that every citizen of Nebraska has access to NET programming in all situations. When you add in the tremendous monetary support we get from individuals, families, businesses and foundations, it equals success that all of us can share. We appreciate that you watch, listen, support and comment about NET. Best wishes for the New Year!

NPR Is “National Treasure” NPR executive Jarl Mohn calls the network a “national treasure.”
Mohn, a media industry veteran, returned to his radio roots in 2014 when he accepted a position as NPR’s CEO. Mohn worked as a radio disc jockey for two decades, using the on-air name Lee Masters, which was easier to pronounce than his real name. (As for how to say Jarl Mohn, he provided this guidance: the “J” is pronounced like a “Y,” and Mohn rhymes with “phone.”)
Mohn worked as an executive at MTV, and E! Entertainment Television and served a stint on the board of XM Radio. He was involved in interactive television, cable television networks and Internet enterprises, and was an angel investor in several young digital media and mobile companies.
To address concerns that his past network experience may influence what he does at NPR, he said: “The first thing I would think if I were a reporter or anybody inside the organization or outside is – ‘Oh my God. This guy’s coming in. He’s worked at MTV. He’s worked at VH1. He’s worked at E! This is the direction we’re going?’ And I can tell you with 100 percent certainty: absolutely not.”
Mohn, 62, has been a member of the board of directors at several media organizations, including KPCC Southern California Public Radio and the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. And, although Mohn has been a contributor to Democratic candidates and political committees, he has pledged to stop making political contributions.
“This is not a job for me. It is a mission. I love public radio and NPR. It is a national treasure and more important now than ever,” said Mohn.

Central Nebraska was in the spotlight as NET Radio’s Friday Live broadcast from The Tassel, Phelps County’s Performing Arts Center on Friday, Nov. 14. Host Genevieve Randall lined-up a variety of guests to talk about the arts in Holdrege, Kearney, Minden, and Hastings.
Live music made the program even more special. Nearly 60 guests at The Tassell, and thousands listening over the air, heard a performance by championship banjo player, 15-year old Matt Davis, and his brother Nick Davis from Alma, Neb. Violinist TingLan Chen and pianist Nathan
Buckner, both from the University of Nebraska-Kearney, also performed.
“We love taking Friday Live on the road. There is so much to appreciate, including the fact that arts and cultural opportunities abound in Nebraska. We’re proud to help celebrate the good work happening all over the state,” said NET Radio Network Manager Nancy Finken.

Masterpiece
Downton Abbey
The drama, romance and comedy at the English country
estate create a deliciously entertaining formula that has made Downton Abbey the highest-rated drama in PBS history.
Follow plot threads left dangling from last season, including Lady Mary’s courtship contest, Lady Edith’s trials as a secret single mom, Thomas’s scheming against Bates, Robert’s battles against
modernity, Tom’s quest to be true to his ideals, Violet’s one-line zingers, and much, much more.
One of the recurring themes of Downton Abbey is change, from the wrenching consequences of the Titanic disaster in Season 1 to a notorious automobile accident at the end of Season 3 – plus World War I, women’s rights, and the new morals, inventions and fashions of the 1920s.
Season 5 picks up in 1924. The United Kingdom has its first Labor Party prime minister. The radio is the latest miracle of the age. And Downton’s traditional ways are besieged on all fronts, as evidenced by this exchange between the head housekeeper, Mrs. Hughes, and the butler, Mr. Carson:
“We’re catching up, Mr. Carson. Whether you like it or not, Downton is catching up with the times we live in,” says the forward-thinking Mrs. Hughes.
“That’s exactly what I’m afraid of!” the butler retorts.
Downton Abbey returns to NET Television for an epic fifth season on Sunday, Jan. 4!
Season 5Sundays, Jan. 4 - March 1 at 8 p.m. CT on NET1 (Repeating Thursdays Jan. 8 - March 5 at 7 p.m. CT on NET1)
This six-part mystery is set in 1953, and stars a charismatic young clergyman and a down-to-earth cop who team up to investigates mysterious wrongdoings in the beautiful hamlet of Grantchester. The series is based on the acclaimed mystery novels by James Runcie, who styled the young vicar after his late father, who was Archbishop of Canterbury in the 1980s.

Have a question about membership, estate gifts or planning your will?
Harriet Otis is a self-proclaimed “news junkie,” and the PBS NewsHour on NET Television is her main source for reliable information. “There’s no shouting on the NewsHour. It’s intelligent and polite, no matter how combustible the
topic,” she said. The format matches Harriet’s personality, and her passion to know and understand the world around her.
Harriet met her late husband, Bill, at Grinnell College in Iowa. They married in 1950 and raised three boys. She started watching NET soon after it went on the air in 1954 – after the couple bought a television set. In 1964, she and a friend co-founded and, for 13 years, managed the Village Book Shop in Countryside Village in Omaha. Although neither of them had any prior business experience, the independent bookstore was a huge success, and the predecessor to the popular Bookworm bookstore that still exists today.
Today, Harriet has downsized from the large family home she shared with her husband and sons to a trendy downtown Omaha apartment located in a refurbished historical building. It’s been specially outfitted with an art studio where Harriet spends many hours sketching, painting and drawing – creating art inspired by the people she loves and the places she’s traveled.
As time passes, both her art collection and her list of favorite programs on NET grow. And, she never misses a chance to expand her knowledge, comparing NET to having an encyclopedia right at your fingertips.
“I love the Wednesday night science programs like Nature and NOVA,” she said. “They take a subject and don’t just skim over it. There’s an in-depth
investigation of the subject and you can always learn something.” She also enjoys the music programs on NET Television, and the Masterpiece series, especially Downton Abbey.
Harriet doesn’t just sit back and enjoy NET; she is a generous supporter of the programming she loves, too. “I went from being a viewer to being a donor. It seems to me that if this is your chosen source for information, then you had better support it.”
Harriet has made many gifts to NET through the years and has been a member of the Jack G. McBride Society since 2010. Support from Harriet and donors like her, make it possible for NET to continue bringing quality programming to Nebraskans.
For Harriet, there are no other real options for television viewing. “It’s far more interesting than the average fare,” she said.

Retirement funds you didn’t spend during your lifetime will go to an organization you support
Designating NET as a beneficiary won’t reduce the amount of retirement funds available to you
The gift does not occur during your lifetime – instead it happens when you no longer need it
If viewers/listeners left just 5 percent of their retirement plan assets to NET, the results could be transformative.
It’s easy to gift retirement assets, and no attorney is needed. Simply request a change in beneficiary form from your plan administrator and allocate up to 100 percent to NET.

The mission of NET is to enrich lives and engage minds by connecting communities and celebrating Nebraska with services that educate and enlighten.
Do you have money saved in a 401K or an IRA? In addition to income tax savings at the time you make contributions to retirement plans such as these, the assets build tax free over time.
Money in retirement plans is typically not subject to income tax until it is actually withdrawn by the plan owner or surviving heirs. But, this taxation makes retirement assets among the most costly to distribute to loved ones. It can be better to leave nontaxable assets (stocks and real estate) to your loved ones and the taxable assets (retirement accounts and IRAs) to tax-exempt charitable organizations such as NET.
For example, the income taxes on retirement assets received by beneficiaries can be as high as 39.6 percent. This means that an IRA worth $100,000 will be worth only $60,400 by the time it reaches your heirs. On the other hand, naming NET as the beneficiary of retirement assets upon death generates no income taxes. The charity is tax-exempt and eligible to receive the full amount and bypass any income taxes. This means that in the above example, NET would receive the full $100,000 benefit. Five Reasons to Share your Assets
