From  Our  Pastor’s  Desk:    To  me  the  best  part  of  the  New  Year  is  the  blank  calendar,  the  unwritten  pages  of  the  planner,  and  the  possibilities  that  these  hold.  You  and  I  have  been  repeatedly  advised  to  make  goals  for  the  year  and  to  begin  scheduling  the  important  items.  This  task  includes  taking  time  to  revisit  our  values  and  evaluate  where  we  want  to  spend  our  efforts  so  that  the  important  elements  of  life  are  not  left  to  chance.      We  value  our  family;  therefore  we  put  family  night  on  the  calendar  regularly.  Our  faith  is  important,  so  decide  what  actions  we  want  to  take  to  ensure  we  continue  to  grow  in  our  relationship  with  God:  a  new  devotional?  a  Bible  study?  We  want  to  make  a  difference  to  someone  outside  of  our  immediate  circle  of  influence,  so  we  consider  scheduling  time  to  work  at  the  homeless  shelter  or  to  visit  in  the  nursing  homes.  See  the  wonderful  possibilities!      Adding  time  for  what  matters  most  in  life  was  reinforced  for  me  this  2016  New  Year’s  Day.  Alongside  my  empty  calendar  and  planner,  a  funeral  bulletin  lay  on  my  desk  as  I  began  working  on  the  eulogy  of  a  great  lady  who  had  made  a  huge  impact  on  her  family,  friends  and  church.  Even  in  the  sadness  of  loss,  we  could  celebrate  a  life  well  lived.  It  was  a  significant  reminder  to  me  of  what  is  truly  important  and  that  how  we  live  each  day  of  our  lives  truly  makes  a  difference,  because  our  actions  impact  others  in  a  substantial  manner.

(cont.)    Poet,  Linda  Ellis  speaks  of  this  in  her  work  entitled,  The  Dash:

I  read  of  a  man  who  stood  to  speak  at  the  funeral  of  a  friend.

He  referred  to  the  dates  on  the  tombstone  from  the  beginning…to  the  end.

He  noted  that  first  came  the  date  of  birth  and  spoke  the  following  date  with  tears,  but  he  said  what  mattered  most  of  all  was  the  dash  between  those  years.

For  that  dash  represents  all  the  time  that  they  spent  alive  on  earth.

And  now  only  those  who  loved  them  know  what  that  little  line  is  worth.

The  dash  –  that  is  what  we  will  be  remembered  by.  We  live  in  community  and  what  we  do  influences  the  lives  of  so  many.  Harvard  Professor,  Dr.  Clayton  Christensen  states  this  in  his  book,  How  Will  You  Measure  Your  Life:  “Most  of  us  face  a  series  of  small  everyday  decisions  that  rarely  seem  like  they  have  high  stakes  attached.  But  over  time  they  can  play  out  far  more  dramatically.”  What  we  place  on  the  calendar  of  our  everyday  lives  has  everlasting  implications.      We  have  so  much  built  into  our  schedules;  we  find  ourselves  balancing  work,  family,  recreation  and  our  faith  walk.  It  seems  like  an  endless  battle  and  often  we  revert  to  “auto-‐pilot”  mode.  Yet  it  is  important

(cont.)    for  us  to  confirm  that  our  values  are  substantiated  in  our  living  habits,  in  a  way  that  expresses  our  love  and  our  faith  to  others.    So,  when  your  eulogy  is  being  read,  with  your  life’s  actions  to  rehash…

would  you  be  proud  of  the  things  they  say

about  how  you  spent  YOUR  dash?

The  Dash  by  Linda  Ellis  copyright  1996

As  we  begin  to  fill  those  blank  pages  of  your  planners  and  calendars,  remember  how  important  it  is  to  schedule  time  for  the  things  that  have  eternal  significance  for  us  and  for  the  Kingdom  of  God.  Blessings  to  you  and  yours  this  New  Year!

-‐  Renee

Our annual food packing for Samaritans’ International was held on January 17th at 12:30 pm. We reached a milestone at Bethlehem by packing the eight- millionth meal as a church! We worked a little longer than usual and prepared over 54,000 meals for God’s children in Nicaraqua just in this one afternoon!

Ash Wednesday Services

Come to the Ash Wednesday service at Bethlehem United Methodist Church on February 10th at 7:00 pm

Praising God

We as a church family can celebrate the building of the Arbor, the heating system we had to replace, and our new roof over the sanctuary. These were all expensive capital improvements, which pave the way for our future at Bethlehem. God has richly blessed us with the tools to spread his message…so go, sow, and grow!
