Many alumni have been incredibly involved and generous throughout the school’s history. Due to the rich academic programs, fine arts and athletic traditions set forth from our alumni, Mishawaka High School continues to serve our community, families and students in order to enrich opportunities for all involved. As I attend MHS Alumni luncheons throughout the year, I witness firsthand each time the pride, memories and passion that our alumni have towards Mishawaka High School. It is always an honor to sit with different alumni at each luncheon and listen to the stories that are shared regarding their time at Mishawaka High School. On my return trip back to the high school after these luncheons, I take time to reflect on my lunch experiences with all of you and take great pride in being the Principal at Mishawaka High School. The opportunity to share in these stories over lunch has enabled me to develop new friendships and gain more insight on the power of a Mishawaka High School education. Therefore, let me say “thank you” to all of our alumni for your hospitality to me and others at these monthly luncheons. Your stories and memories regarding Mishawaka High School are intriguing and noteworthy. Your value on our past, present and future is greatly appreciated. On behalf of Mishawaka High School, our teachers, staff, administration and students, we would like to wish all our alumni and families a “Merry Christmas” and Happy New Year. Thank you for making Mishawaka High School a special place. DECEMBER ALUMNI LUNCHEONThe attendance of 273 alumni had the pleasure of listening to Bryan Edington, acoustic guitarist and vocalist while dining on a Polish style lunch for the last alumni luncheon of 2015. Guests were greeted by Marci Michiels, wife of Maury Michiels ‘49, dressed as Mrs. Clause and handed out candy canes.

The 50/50 raffle was held and the winners were: Jake Taylor ‘34 (Riley) $60; Jackie Curtis ‘64 $40; and Craig Brechtel ‘66 $35.

Theweah Hartig ‘51 was on hand to sell freshly picked pecans. This fundraising effort resulted in the sale of 64 pounds of pecans and raised a total of $704 for the local chapter of Tri Kappa of Indiana. This was an increase in sales from last year by 14 pounds. Theweah wants to thank everyone who contributed to the support of Tri Kappa of Indiana.

Also on hand were Jen Thompson and Lisa Walker ‘86 representatives of the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) who sold Cavemen spirit wear. They have been present at the last three luncheons and have raised close to $1,000 during that time!

J. B. “Bernie” Rivard ‘48, is best known for the breadth of his creative output. He’s written songs as well as orchestral works,

exhibited award-winning paintings and etchings, worked as a reporter and journalist, published cartoons and illustrations, written novels and short stories—and, in several instances, produced many of these creations during his off hours while employed full time as an engineer. His latest accomplishment is the soon-to-be-released historical novel, Illusions of Magic, which he also illustrated.

It all began in Mishawaka, where his high school painting of prizefighters earned a Gold Key, the highest regional award in

the Scholastic Art Competition. As a senior at MHS he produced more than forty cartoon illustrations that helped the Miskodeed win sixth-place out of 723 applicants across the nation in the National Scholastic Press Association ratings.

J.B. had practiced drawing since childhood, rendering everything from animals to airplanes, often copying his favorite characters from newspaper comic pages. As a teen, he’d attended a summer session at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, and began submitting to art exhibitions, at first watercolors, then later oil paintings and works in other mediums. Over the next thirty-seven years, his work appeared in more than fifty juried exhibitions throughout the U.S., including more than fifteen by invitation.

J.B. always was drawn restlessly to personal creative pursuits. He received numerous awards for his artworks, including prizes at the New Mexico State Fair, exhibiting at the invitation of the State Legislature in Santa Fe, NM and in a solo show at the New Mexico Arts Commission (also in Santa Fe). His prize-winning oil painting, The Intruder, was purchased for inclusion in the collection of the El Paso Museum of Art.

To read the first four chapters of J.B.’s new book, and to learn more about his accomplishments, go to www.illusionsofmagic.com. You can also sign up there for his Illusions newsletter.

In Illusions of Magic, a rich, devious banker engages magician Nick Zetner to retrieve compromising photos. Along the way, Nick regains a love he thought he’d forever lost. As Chicago reels from the fatal wounding of its mayor by a bullet meant for Franklin D. Roosevelt, love and duty clash, the quest risks Nick’s magic . . . then turns deadly.

A magician short of bookings. A banker with a secret. A woman missing for 20 years.

YOUNG ADULT SERVICES to attend MHS Alumni Luncheon

The Young Adult Services program (YAS) is a project that was originated with the support of the Mishawaka Education Foundation (MEF) and is designed to provide opportunties that combines

job-based skills, life skills, and academic skills to students with disabilities in a structured, supervised environment where all students, regardless of their disabilities, can contribute to the successful completion and sales of marketable products.

The mission of Young Adult Services is to maximize the skills of our students as they prepare for life beyond the public school setting. Students in YAS have individual education plans (IEPs) that are designed to increase skills in the areas of education and training, including the continued development of functional academic skills when appropriate, employment, and independent living. Supervised by Darcey Kellenburger, the funds raised goes back into the program for supplies.

YAS will be at the February 3 MHS alumni luncheon to sell their own creative handmade cards for all occasions and seasons along with handmade note pads. Be sure to attend and help support this awesome endeavor!

It’s not too often that a Mishawakan gets on the cover of Sports Illustrated, but that’s

exactly what happened to John Roggeman ‘79 and the Nov. 30 issue of SI!

A veteran of 14 years of officiating Big Ten football games, Roggeman was working the Nov. 21 Iowa - Purdue game at Iowa City in his role as back judge.

During the game which Iowa won over Purdue, Hawkeye junior tight end George Kittle caught a 35 yard touchdown pass which helped the Hawks win the Big Ten title.

Sports Illustrated photographer Jeff Haynesmanaged to snap the catch and also in the picture is John Roggeman with both arms raised, signaling a touchdown. John is in the right place at the right time.

Roggeman’s football related career is a long and successful one. First his father played for MHS and John himself had a great playing career at Mishawaka and later on at Indiana University as a running back. John also had brothers who played for the Cavemen, In addition, John and his lovely wife Beverly have a son Chad who played for Mishawaka. John and Bev have two daughters, Rachael and Clare.

Following his football playing career, Rogge has worked high school football games as an official on both the freshman, junior varsity and varsity levels in addition to middle school games. If all this isn’t enough, he still works Mishawaka youth football games.

In all, the veteran official has been wearing the striped shirt for 28 years. Roggeman told this columnist that the photo in Sports Illustrated was a surprise and went on to indicated that “hopefully I’ll avoid the Sports Illustrated jinx.”

John recently officiated at the Big 10 title game in Indianapolis on December 5. Quite an honor!

Mishawaka’s John Roggeman is on Cover of Sports Illustrated as reported by Joe DeKever in The Mishawaka Enterprise, December 3
