There is Torah within each of us. There is a connection to the es-

sence of God that flows through our spirits and can guide us.

This may seem elusive and distant, too hard to track down and

draw out. This might seem too commanding and binding, better

to be ignored. This might seem uncertain and indefinite, best to

leave uninvestigated. When we ignore this Torah within we deprive ourselves of one of

God’s greatest gifts to each of us. When we ignore this Torah within we also rob those

around us of the unique wisdom we should be sharing.

It is a well-known “joke” that if you put two Jews together you get three opinions. This

is usually said in a mocking tone, but it is profoundly serious and a great compliment to

our people. Each of us is called upon to put our ideas, our Torah on the table of the

community and expose it to those around us. They will do likewise. But this is not kin-

dergarten show and tell; the opinions and views clash. This smashing together of ideas

leads to a third better opinion for all of us. Each of us only has some of the ingredients

but they must be added to the communal pot if the recipe is to be complete.

Participating in this cooking is terrifying and embarrassing and humbling. It is also en-

nobling, enlightening and empowering like nothing else. Recently our congregant Art

Louv took me up on the offer I made to the community almost a year ago. Share your

views with us during a service. Give us your Torah and let us learn from each other. He

did a great job and I hope will be followed by many more. Each summer many volun-

teers share their Torah while I am on vacation and this ensures we keep learning all

year. But such opportunities need not wait till then. Learning and sharing what is

learned is not a rabbinic monopoly. Please contact me if you would like to study to-

gether or prepare something to share with the community. Let us all learn from your

Torah.

To our Temple Israel Family,

A Happy and Healthy New Year to all in our family. By the time this message

gets to you, 2017 will be upon us. There are many exciting things on the ho-

rizon for Temple Israel, and some recent events and happenings to recap.

First, many thanks to all who have served Temple Israel as a volunteer

leader in the past year. From working in the kitchen, volunteering in the office, serving on commit-

tees, serving as an officer or Board member, we could not do it all without you. Thanks too, to our

office personnel, and to Rabbi for working hard to make sure our Shul can be there for all of us.

Mitzvah day was a success, as we cleaned up the Shul a bit, relocated our President Photos to the

wall outside our chapel, changed light bulbs, worked in the kitchen and storage rooms, and cookies

and brownies were baked for local fire and police agencies.

Our Foyer renovation project will commence in the next few weeks. A new floor, new furniture to

house our Tallitot, and new paint and furniture will welcome everyone entering our Sanctuary. I also

understand our Sisterhood is renovating the kitchen storage area behind the Social Hall doors near

the kitchen, which will spruce up that area, and thanks go out to our Ladies, always working hard for

TI.

We are optimistic that our former library, now-titled as an art studio, will receive some much-needed

attention to make it a functional and operational room for our Religious School Students. We are

hoping to install new drywall, paint, and possibly, new flooring in there to really enhance our kids’

love of art and creativeness.

Another project being investigated is installation of hot water in our two forward-situated bath-

rooms, near the Sanctuary and Chapel. This will not only be a wonderful enhancement to our facil-

ity, but will assist Share-the-Care in their mission to care for our elder community. Share The Care

has signed on for 2017 in their current space, and our relationship with Temple Shir Shalom also ex-

tends to the end of 2017.

The Meitin Alliance for Growth and Learning (MAGAL) continues to thrive with our collaboration

with Temple Shir Shalom. We hope for growth and learning to continue as a source of pride at Tem-

ple Israel, for 2017 and beyond, with over 40 students from our combined Shuls at this time.

Greetings parents,

Last month we enjoyed a very special religious school Shabbat on December 16

when many of our children in our 3-5 grade class were presented with their very

own personalized siddur as created by their parents. January’s religious school

Shabbat will be January 20. Please join us!

Parent’s Corner

Tot Programs Our next Tot Shabbat will be on Saturday, January 21 at 11:15 am in our Kindergarten Classroom #1.

Tot Shabbat is a joyful and engaging program geared toward families with young children, ages 5 and

under (older siblings are welcome, too). The 45 minute program includes Shabbat themed songs,

dancing, stories, simple blessings, and a snack. Bring your friends and meet other families with small

children as we celebrate Shabbat with the youngest members of our community. All are welcome

and temple membership is not required. Afterwards, stay and join our entire congregation for our

Shabbat Kiddush Luncheon.

Tot Sunday Program – Bagels & Blocks has begun! Join us on the second Sunday of each month

(January 8 this month) from 9:30 am-11:00 am for crafts, music, snack and more – what’s not to love?

Hello youth & families,

The month of December was a big month for the youth department here at Temple Is-

rael. We ran events for all three age groups and had a great time developing relation-

ships and having fun.

The coming month of January is going to hold much of the same experience. I have

planned an overnight for all three groups and I am hoping that this proves to have even

more fun and excitement than the last.

We are going to be holding and overnight for Kadima which will include a dinner of ap-

petizers and junk food, a movie, ice cream, and some late night style games. USY is go-

ing to also have dinner and a movie but we are going to be making our own pizzas and

watching a movie. L’Dor V’Dor is going to be coming to the shul and we will be having

some relay races as well as trivia style games which will involve prizes. All in all this

month is going to be full of fun, excitement, cinema, and a lot of food.

I hope to see all of the kids and am excited to meet the parents I have not yet had the

pleasure of meeting.

Sisterhood is part of the bigger picture, not only of our

synagogue but of Conservative/Masorti Judaism interna-

tionally. As the graphic to below suggests, each of us is a

unique puzzle piece that, joined together, completes the

picture.

At the start of our new secular calendar year it is a good time to re-

flect on Sisterhood membership and, if you have not yet renewed (or

joined!), now is the time to do that. In celebration of our members

and in anticipation of the Centennial year of Women’s League

(WLCJ), everyone is invited to Sisterhood Shabbat on Saturday morn-

ing, January 21, 2017.

What is so special about Sisterhood Shabbat? Don’t women in our

congregation routinely ascend the Bimah to lead services, chant Torah and Haftorah and share a sermon or a

d’var? The answer is “Yes!” we do – and we are very proud to do so. But Sisterhood Shabbat is important for

many other reasons as well.

It is a time when women who may not feel comfortable taking a part during a Shabbat morning

service, feel empowered to do so.

Sisterhood Shabbat is an opportunity to honor those women who have stepped up to lead or par-

ticipate in Sisterhood events all year.

The sermon on Sisterhood Shabbat provides our congregation with information about our Sister-

hood’s accomplishments in the past year and a vision of what is planned for the remainder of the

year.

It is an opportunity for our Rabbi to sit with his family and enjoy a Shabbat service as a

“Jew in the pew!”

Torah Fund Campaign

The 2017 Torah Fund Campaign is at the half-way point and there is still plenty of time

to make a gift! Torah Fund is the designated philanthropy of Women’s League for

Conservative Judaism and it supports the students and institutions of the Conserva-

tive/Masorti movement. These institutions are:

Equality at the Kotel

The flyer on the next page outlines the issues regarding equality at the Kotel and the cam-

paign organized by Masorti to bring about the promised changes that have been trampled on

by the current leadership in Israel. Since the creation of this flyer the need to speak up has in-

tensified because of the bill introduced into the Knesset by ultra-Orthodox MK that would

outlaw egalitarian prayer at the Kotel and criminalize the wearing of a tallit or tefillin or read-

ing aloud from Torah by women.

Prayerful Meditation

Saturday, January 28 - 9:30 am

An experiential workshop to help open up the channels of spirit that connect us to God. Led

by Rabbi Joshua Neely, this will include meditation, guided imagery, breathing exercises and

more. Held in the Savage Family Chapel at 9:30 am.

Start reading now … we will be discussing this book at our February meeting of the Book

Club. Cathleen Schine is one of America’s great comic novelists and this book is a hilarious

novel about aging, family, loneliness, and love. Join us on February 26 for a lively discus-

sion!

Latino Shabbat

Join us for another Latino Shabbat on Saturday, January 14 at 10:30 am. The service will be conducted in Spanish and Hebrew using a siddur in both languages. A Kiddush Luncheon will be served in the Roth Social Hall.

The service is open to the entire Jewish community of Orlando.

Trailblazers Mollie Savage Honored as Bornstein Graduate

The Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando's

Jerome J. Bornstein Leadership Development

Program has 11 new alumni.

Members of the 2015-16 Bornstein class were

honored in a graduation ceremony at Central

Florida Hillel last month. Federation officers

and Board members, along with several Born-

stein alumni, were on hand to celebrate with

the graduates [one of whom is Temple Israel’s

own Mollie Savage].

The Bornstein Leadership Development Program is designed to develop future

leaders for the Central Florida Jewish community. Those selected for the program

participate in a yearlong educational experience that includes deep dives into top-

ics such as leadership style, effective board and volunteer management, and en-

gagement around Israel, to name a few. Past Bornstein graduates have gone on

to serve on boards and hold top leadership positions at many of Central Florida's

synagogues and Jewish agencies, as well as at the Jewish Federation of Greater

Orlando.

Friday Service: 7:30 pm, Saturday Service: 9:30 am Meet & Greet every Friday at 7:00 pm before services

Sunday Minyan: 9:00 am (in the Savage Family Chapel)

Prayerful Meditation: Saturday at 9:30 am every last Shabbat of the month (in the Savage Family Chapel)

Weekday Community Minyan at the Jewish Academy: 7:45 am, Monday-Friday

Temple Israel’s Keepers of the Flame Not surprisingly, our membership dues do not cover Temple Israel’s expenses, and without generous donations we would be unable to fulfill our mission of building a sacred community. Thus our basic dues represent a member’s minimum financial commitment. Recognizing that there are many mem-bers who have the ability and the desire to provide greater support in addition to their basic dues, Temple Israel created a membership category called Keepers of the Flame to provide a mechanism for this increased level of giving. The generosity of our current and future Keepers is vital to the sustain-ability and growth of Temple Israel.

In appreciation of this increased-dues level of commitment, Keepers of the Flame are welcome at all Temple Israel sponsored Shabbat dinners, synagogue Seders and program events without additional charge. Only a reservation is required. Additionally, there is a designated “Keepers of the Flame” seat-ing area at all of the High Holiday services.

The following giving levels are suggested:

Benefactors $15,000 and up

Pillars $10,000 to $14,999

Defenders $7,800 to $9,999

Guardians $5,300 to $7,799

Protectors $3,300 to $5,299

Preservers $2,400 to $3,299

Kindlers (individuals only) $2,000 to $2,399
