Kindergarten Registration Kindergarten registration for Williston District #1 schools for the 2019-2020 school year will be Monday, January 21, 2019, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM at McVay Elementary School, 420 University Avenue. Students must be 5 by July 31, 2019 to start kindergarten in the fall. Bring these items to registration: birth certificate, immunization record, and proof of residency. Starting January 22, registrations must be done at the District #1 office which is located at 1201 9th Ave NW, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Registrations will not be done at the individual school sites.

Save Aluminum Cans Rickard School saves aluminum cans and pop tabs during the entire school year. Send them to the school any time. We give the pop tabs to the Ronald McDonald Houses. The money they receive from the pop tabs help families to find comfort at their “home-away-from-home” when a family member is having cancer treatments. Thank you to everyone that takes the time to save the pop tabs and aluminum cans at Rickard.

Quarter 2 Puzzle Winners In our year-round incentive puzzle contest, for Quarter 2, Mrs. Norby’s kindergarten class was the winner in the K-2 category with 7 completed puzzles. In the grade 3-4 category, there was a tie between Ms. Bjornson’s class and Mrs. Fuhrmann’s class. They each had 4 completed puzzles. For Quarter 2, the Rickard classes completed 38 puzzles. Way to go, Roadrunners!

Lost & Found

Our Lost & Found is overflowing and none of the items are labeled. PLEASE mark your child’s items (gloves, hats, jackets, boots, and snow pants) with at least initials. That way, we can get those items back to your child if the items are accidentally left at school. Parents, we encourage you to check our Lost & Found regularly. The kids don’t seem to realize that they have lost things.

PTO News The next PTO meeting will be Wednesday, January 16th, at 7:00 PM. Everyone is invited to attend. Thank you for supporting the PTO by buying candy canes in December. We sold 614 candy canes. The profit was $153.50. That amount was donated to the Family Crisis Shelter in Williston. A Family Movie Night will be held Friday, January 25th, at 7:00 PM. The event is free. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, pillows, etc., to relax as you watch the movie. More information will be sent later in the month as to what movie will be shown that evening.

Mr. Klassen’s Corner

Roadrunner News! January 2019 Welcome back and welcome to any new students to Rickard Elementary. Hopefully, the holiday break provided a chance to rest and relax. The Rickard staff would like to wish a Happy New Year to everyone and hoping it’s full of hope and promise! Rickard students have transitioned back into their academic routines, and believe it or not, the start of the second semester started January 2nd, 2019. Report cards will be sent home on January 4, 2019. If you have questions about your child’s academic progress, please feel free to contact their teacher. Additionally, it’s important for students to arrive at school on time. The homeroom period provides students with a smooth transition to a day of learning, as this time the students review the day’s schedule, listen to school announcements, take lunch count, and other valuable announcements. Children are easily distracted and a classmate who comes into the room after an activity has started causes disruption. Disruptions can take time away from valuable activities. When a student is late, it doesn’t make that transition easy for them and they may feel anxious or rushed. Some children are embarrassed when everyone’s attention is drawn to them and being on time means that they are not the center of attention. Provide your children

with a positive start to the day, please plan your morning so your child arrives to their homeroom by 8:15. Students arriving at 8:20 or later should sign in at the central office and will be considered tardy. Williston has been blessed with a mild winter thus far, however things can change in the blink of an eye. Therefore, it is imperative students come to school dressed with the proper winter attire. Ensuring your student is warm at recess, they should be wearing snow pants, thermal coat, boots, gloves/mittens, stocking hat, and other winter accessories which will keep them warm. Looking forward to a successful 2019! Kevin Klassen Principal Rickard Elementary

Dress Warmly

Make sure your child has all of the appropriate winter gear for our North Dakota winters. Classrooms may also be cool at times. Having an extra sweatshirt or sweater at school is a good idea.

Inform the Office Please inform the office if you change your address, telephone number, employer, work phone, or have a new emergency phone number. Also, be sure to call the school by 8:15 AM if your child will be absent from school. We have an answering machine, so you can leave a message after 4 p.m. or before 7:30 a.m. The school phone number is 701-572-5412. Parents can also email their child’s teacher. All of the Rickard Elementary staff email addresses are on the district website.

Lunch Money

Lunch money reminders are sent home with students on Mondays on PINK paper.

They are sent if your child’s lunch account has $10 or less. If students have a negative lunch balance, they cannot have the milk break in the mornings. Please make every effort to keep a positive balance in your child’s lunch account. Applications for free and reduced price meals can be submitted anytime during the school year. Stop in the Rickard office for an application or apply online on the District #1 website. Money can be deposited on accounts using a credit card at www.myschoolbucks.com. Lunch balance reminders can also be set up on that website. Checks, payable to Rickard School, and cash can be sent to school.

Stacking Up Box Tops

Thank you for a great box top contest, “Stacking Up Box Tops” during the short and busy month of December! Classes got one snowball to put on the

bulletin board for every ten box tops brought to school. Here are the results: Mrs. Karowski’s class exploded the last few days with stacking 35 snowballs and winning a Snowball Party. They will have fun with games and cold treats! Tied for 2nd Place with 13 snowballs each was Mrs. Moe and Miss Seven’s classes 3rd Place: Mrs. Gaymer, 11 snowballs 4th Place: Mrs. Reilly, 10 snowballs 5th Place: Mrs. Norby, 9 snowballs 6th Place: Mrs. Larson, 8 snowballs 7th Place Mr. Prout, 5 snowballs 8th Place: Ms. Bjornson, 4 snowballs 9th Place: Mrs. Fuhrmann, 2 snowballs Congratulations! By working together, that’s another 1100 Box tops that we receive money from for our school! Happy New Year! Keep saving and clipping those box tops as we move into a 3 month contest from January – March. Remember to watch the expiration dates on the box tops. We cannot count or send in outdated box tops. A correction to the winners of the November Box Top contest…it was Miss Seven’s class and Mrs. Karwoski’s class that tied for first place.

Save These, Please! Throughout the 2018-2019 school year, we will continue to collect “Box Tops for Education”. Box tops can be turned into the office or to the classroom teachers anytime during the school year. We have box top contests throughout the year. More information will be sent home when we start our first contest. PTO volunteers compile all of these items. It helps immensely if a person will cut out the box tops before sending them to school. That way, the PTO volunteer doesn’t have to take time to cut around all of them. Cash Wise Foods sponsors the MORE School Rewards program to help schools raise money. It runs September 1, 2018 through May 31, 2019. It does not run over the summer. Go to www.moreRewards.com to sign up and designate Rickard Elementary as your preferred school. The money we get from these programs is used for supplies, materials, and other items to improve Rickard and the students’ educational opportunities.
