Monday, Dec. 31 marks the last day in office for Guttenberg’s two longest-serving council members, Alfonso “Al” Caso and Donna Florio. Both chose to retire at the end of their current term.

Santa Catches a Ride Through Guttenberg
Santa Claus temporarily set aside his traditional reindeer-powered sleigh for a more updated vehicle on his most recent trek through Guttenberg. For the annual Santa Parade on Saturday, Dec. 22, Santa cruised in comfort inside a fire truck provided by North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue.
Mayor Wayne Zitt walked the entire parade route handing out candy canes, Santa hats, and “Santa & Friends” coloring & activity books to delighted kids. Joining him were Town Council Members Monica Fundora and John Habermann, Town Administrator Cosmo Cirillo, and a crowd of local officials, employees, and residents.

Guttenberg’s annual Santa Parade is a longstanding tradition that has entertained generations of families in the town. Originally scheduled for Friday night, this year’s parade was rescheduled to Saturday afternoon due to inclement weather.

Resource Center Celebrates First Christmas in Guttenberg
The North Bergen Free Public Library hosted a family-friendly party on Thursday, Dec. 13 to celebrate their first Christmas at the Guttenberg Resource Center. The main attraction was, of course, Santa Claus, who dropped by to pose for instant photos with all the kids and their parents.
Mayor Wayne Zitt was on hand to give out goodie bags to attendees, alongside Council Members Monica Fundora and John Habermann, and Library Executive Director Sai Rao.
The attractive souvenir photos were sponsored by the Town of Guttenberg, Mayor Zitt, the Town Council, and the Guttenberg Recreation Department. Kids got to create their own personal frames for the photos using glitter, spangles, stickers, colored markers and other art supplies provided by the library.
The North Bergen Public Library traditionally hosts parties in its other two locations every year at Christmastime. This was the first year the festivities also took place in the Guttenberg Resource Center, which opened on July 31, 2018.
In addition to allowing residents to borrow books from more than 75 public libraries participating in the BCCLS system – spanning Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic counties – the Resource Center offers DVDs, audio books, games, periodicals, foreign language publications, and more, all free to residents.
Plus they offer a generous selection of free classes and seminars, including everything from pre-school sessions for toddlers to ESL and computer training courses for adults, and everything in between.
The Guttenberg Resource Center is conveniently located in the lower level of the Galaxy Towers mall.
22 years before being elected to the council in January 2006. Serving on multiple committees and acting as chairwoman of the Police Committee, she helped modernize the Guttenberg Police Department, increasing the number of officers, installing more security cameras around town, and bringing in an outside agency to update rules and regulations. In addition she was highly active in providing recreation and senior programs to residents.
When Donna briefly retired in 2018 while her mother was ill, her husband, Nick, temporarily took over her role on the council. Following her retirement they are moving to Florida to be near their grandchildren.
Together Al and Donna were dedicated leaders in town, serving as “backbone of the Council,” according to Mayor Wayne Zitt. “Their leaving is a big loss to the town,” he said, and their contributions and presence will be greatly missed.
Luckily, Guttenberg has the talented duo of William Hokien and Juana Malave stepping into their shoes in 2019. The pair were elected to the council by overwhelming popular vote on Nov. 6, 2018. They will be sworn in on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019 in the town chambers. This will be followed by a reorganization meeting during which the council members will each be assigned the department they will oversee.
Santa Makes Guest Appearance at 2nd Annual
Tree Lighting
When the time comes to light up the Christmas tree, who better to flip the switch than Ol’ Saint Nick himself? Santa Claus made his first appearance in Guttenberg this year at the tree-lighting ceremony in front of town hall on Friday, Dec. 7. He was welcomed by Mayor Wayne Zitt, Councilman John Habermann, Recreation Director Mark Rogers, and a large crowd of local residents.
Immediately after the lighting, Santa met with kids and families in the parking lot to take photos, which were printed on the spot as instant souvenirs. Meanwhile town employees and volunteers handed out free toys to all the children, along with cookies and milk.
Also performing at the event were representatives from the Guttenberg Twirlers, and a group of young students who sang a selection of holiday favorites. In honor of the occasion the walls of town hall were joyously decked with holly and other seasonal decorations by Marisol Montanez and members of the Guttenberg Police Department.
Walmart Representative Honored for Service
to the Town
Mayor Wayne Zitt presented the Town of Guttenberg’s Community Service Award to Kelly Jensen at the Town Council meeting on Monday, Nov. 26.
As a representative and township liaison of Walmart, Jensen works closely with our administration on various initiatives to provide for local residents in need. During Thanksgiving she arranged for reduced pricing and donations to the annual turkey giveaway sponsored by the mayor and council.
In other drives she has ensured that Walmart offered reduced rates on school supplies and backpacks for students. She also arranged for the donation of additional free supplies to the children of the town.
In appreciation for her ongoing support, Jensen was presented with a plaque reading “In grateful recognition of your outstanding dedication and generosity to the residents of the Town of Guttenberg.”
The presentation took place in the municipal chambers inside Town Hall, 6808 Park Ave.
Seniors Celebrate the Holidays with an International Lunch Buffet
Hearty Italian dishes, exotic Chinese cuisine, tasty Latin delicacies – it seemed the whole world was on the table at the annual free luncheon for Guttenberg seniors, held at La Grande Buffet in Fairview on Friday, Dec. 14.
More than 100 residents attended the event, coming by car or in free buses provided by the town, making this the largest turnout to date for Guttenberg’s senior holiday meal.
The restaurant was packed with families and friends enjoying the banquet and celebrating the holidays together. Joining them in spreading holiday cheer were Mayor Wayne Zitt, Councilwoman Monica Fundora, Town Administrator Cosmo Cirillo, Senior Meals Coordinator Alicia Hernandez, and numerous other town officials and employees.
Nobody left without hitting the dessert table, with its wide array of succulent treats, ranging from healthy fruit to… well, it was the holidays, so a little cheating on the diet was allowed.
The event was planned and arranged by Senior Services Coordinator Marisol Montanez, who oversees the many programs available for Guttenberg’s senior citizens.
New Year Resolutions for an Awesome 2019
With the New Year upon us, Mayor Wayne Zitt reminds Guttenberg residents that courtesy is contagious. Here are a few tips to make 2019 a better year for everyone:
• Clean up after your dog. Not only will your neighbors thank you, you’ll avoid a potential costly summons. Pet waste is unsightly and poses health problems. Also remember your pets must be on a leash and have a dog license from the town Health Department.
• Don’t throw snow in the streets. Although it may be difficult to clear snow from around your vehicle and/or sidewalk, keep in mind that it’s illegal to shovel snow into the roadway. Not only that, it’s contributes to hazardous driving conditions and makes it that much harder for the DPW to do their job clearing our streets after a storm.
• Don’t put your household garbage in corner receptacles. And be sure to put a lid on all your waste bins. Remember that garbage and bulk pickup schedules are always available on the town website at www.guttenbergnj.org. Just click on the “Garbage & Recycling Information” link in the right column. Or you can download the “My Waste” app from the website, with complete waste and recycling information within Hudson County.
If everyone does their share and follows these few simple resolutions, together we can make Guttenberg an even more inviting, attractive place to live.

Three new police officers joined the Guttenberg Police Department in December, enhancing local law enforcement and making the streets of our town safer. The new officers are Mohammad F. Alabdalla, Theodore Rodriguez, and Andres Lozano Tamayo.
Taking the oath of office in a public ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 19 in town chambers, the three new recruits were sworn in as Class I Special Police Officers. They were each joined for the swearing-in by family members, friends, and neighbors.
Class I Special Police Officers are part-time officers who work 20 hours a week and do not carry a gun. “They are the eyes and ears of the department,” said Public Safety Director Joel Magenheimer. They will regularly walk the streets of the town and are charged with the responsibilities of a regular police officer.
In addition to increasing the visible public presence of the police force, the new officers will participate in the many special events held by the town holds over the course of the year, including concerts, parades, and holiday celebrations. They are already out on the streets patrolling the community, so don’t be shy about introducing yourself if you see one of them in your neighborhood.
OEM Aids 3 Families Displaced by Fire on 70th Street
Two buildings on 70th Street were damaged in a five-alarm fire in Guttenberg on Dec. 19. Although nobody was injured, 12 people in three families were displaced from their homes.
Guttenberg’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM), under Councilman and OEM Coordinator Richie Delafuente, arrived rapidly on the scene and helped arrange for immediate relief, including transporting the families to the Fairfield Marriott in North Bergen, where they will stay while their homes are being repaired. The Marriott was chosen in part because several of the family members are younger children, and a shuttle service from the hotel will take them to school and back. Free breakfasts are also provided by the hotel, which is “bending over backward” to make things easier for the families, according to Delafuente.
Mayor Wayne Zitt has authorized the town to cover the hotel expenses and do whatever is necessary to help get the families back on their feet. Working in coordination with North Bergen’s NB C.A.R.E.S., the OEM brought in the Red Cross to provide emergency necessities for the families, and the New Jersey Humane Society, who donated free pet supplies including food, a bed, and a leash for a dog belonging to one of the families. NB C.A.R.E.S. Coordinator Aimee Focaraccio has offered further assistance in providing clothing, supplies, and furniture as needed.
The fire started a little before 11 a.m. on the roof of 425 70th St., a three-story building housing a clinic on the ground floor and two apartments above. Burning largely within the walls of the building, it generated a large amount of smoke but little visible flame, forcing firefighters to open the walls and ceiling of the building to extinguish the fire. A two-apartment home next door at 423 70th St. was also damaged as a result of the fire, causing the displacement of the third family.
Firefighters from North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue managed to get the fire under control by 2 p.m. The Jersey City Fire Department also sent men and equipment to the scene as backup. In total, the operation and aftermath involved extensive coordination between multiple organizations and municipalities. Within Guttenberg many departments worked hand-in-hand to ensure the quickest, most effective relief for the affected families.
As part of the ongoing effort, Guttenberg’s Building Department is working closely with the contractor to expedite repairs on the three-story structure. The building landlord is working diligently to restore the apartments and get the residents back home as quickly as possible.

Santa Toma un Paseo a Través de Guttenberg
Santa Claus dejó de lado temporalmente su trineo tradicional con renos para un vehículo más actualizado en su viaje más reciente a través de Guttenberg. Para el desfile anual de Santa, el Sábado 22 de Diciembre, Santa viajó cómodamente dentro de un camión de bomberos provisto por North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue.

Centro de Recursos Celebra la Primera Navidad en Guttenberg
La Biblioteca Pública Gratuita de North Bergen organizó una fiesta familiar el Jueves 13 de Diciembre para celebrar su primera Navidad en el Centro de Recursos Guttenberg. La atracción principal era, por supuesto, Santa Claus, que se posó para posar para fotos instantáneas con todos los niños y sus padres.
El alcalde Wayne Zitt estuvo presente para repartir bolsas de regalos a los asistentes, junto con los miembros del Concejo, Monica Fundora y John Habermann, y la Directora Ejecutiva de la Biblioteca, Sai Rao.

Fue recibido por el Alcalde Wayne Zitt, el concejal John Habermann, el Director de Recreación Mark Rogers y una gran multitud de personas. Residentes locales.
Inmediatamente después de la iluminación, Santa se reunió con niños y familias en el estacionamiento para tomar fotos, que se imprimieron en el lugar como recuerdos instantáneos. El alcalde Wayne Zitt presentó el Premio al Servicio Comunitario de la Ciudad de Guttenberg a Kelly Jensen en la reunión del Concejo Municipal el Lunes 26 de Noviembre.
Como representante y enlace municipal de Walmart, Jensen trabaja estrechamente con nuestra administración en diversas iniciativas para brindar asistencia a los residentes locales que lo necesitan. Durante el Día de Acción de Gracias, ella organizó precios reducidos y donaciones para el sorteo anual de pavos patrocinado por el alcalde y el concejo.

Tres Nuevos Oficiales se Unen al Departamento de Policía
Tres nuevos oficiales de policía se unieron al Departamento de Policía de Guttenberg en diciembre, mejorando la aplicación de la ley local y haciendo más seguras las calles de nuestra ciudad. Los nuevos oficiales son Mohammad F. Alabdalla, Theodore Rodriguez, y Andres Lozano Tamayo.
Tomando el juramento de su cargo en una ceremonia pública el Miércoles 19 de Diciembre en las cámaras de la ciudad, los tres nuevos reclutas prestaron juramento como Oficiales Especiales de la Policía de Clase I. Cada uno se unió para la toma de posesión por parte de familiares, amigos y vecinos.
Los oficiales especiales de policía de Clase I son oficiales de medio tiempo que trabajan 20 horas a la semana y no portan armas. “Son los ojos y oídos del departamento”, dijo el Director de Seguridad Pública, Joel Magenheimer. Regularmente caminarán por las calles de la ciudad y serán responsables de las responsabilidades de un oficial de policía regular.

el Fuego en la Calle 70
Dos edificios en la calle 70 se dañaron en un incendio de cinco alarmas en Guttenberg el 19 de Diciembre. Aunque nadie resultó herido, 12 personas de tres familias fueron desplazadas de sus hogares.
La Oficina de Administración de Emergencias (OEM) de Guttenberg, bajo el concejal y coordinadora de OEM Richie Delafuente, llegó rápidamente a la escena y ayudó a organizar un alivio inmediato, incluido el transporte de las familias al Fairfield Marriott en North Bergen, donde permanecerán mientras sus hogares están siendo reparado El Marriott fue elegido en parte porque varios de los miembros de la familia son niños más pequeños, y un servicio de traslado desde el hotel los llevará a la escuela y de regreso.
