Move is an organization at Charles W. Flanagan High School that uplifts students and brings them together socially and academically. Our theme this year is “understanding the purpose of setting goals.” Students mentor other students as a vehicle to empower those students who struggle with social, behavioral, and academic skills. On September 4th we had our first event for the year: A Cupcake Social. The social allowed the MOVE students to meet and greet other members in the group. The keynote speaker Mr. Stephen Brooks spoke on the theme “Setting Goals”. The Cupcake Social ended with refreshments.

Teachers: Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Henry, and Mr. Aiken

The Bilingual/ESOL Department sponsored the Close-Up for New Americans "Rally to the Tally" trip for eligible immigrant

10th and 11th grade students from December 10 - 13, 2019. Students were intrigued by the question, "How can our

understanding of History & Government help us to take an

active role in our communities?" 10th grade student, Vanessa Vincenti said, "This experience was a perfect

opportunity to discover more about the important role I take in society. I learned how powerful my voice can be to

change the world despite being an immigrant. I am beyond

grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Close-Up program since it strengthened my beliefs and my leadership

skills. I will never forget it!" Jose Rincon, 11th grader echoed her sentiments, "I liked that I had the opportunity to

meet a lot of new friends and I loved the experience we had

in sharing our thoughts and ideas!" We look forward to participating in this evert for years to come!

Democracy In Action

Last October, Flanagan High students from Dr. Arellano's AP U.S. History class participated in the District's

Democracy in Action Initiative, a project sponsored by Florida Congressman Richard Stark (D-District 11). The

students, Catalina Jaramillo, Zachary Mata, Manuel DeLeon, Christen Pineiro, and Michael Gold, presented a

bill titled "The Pollutant Pollinator Act", a proposal on limiting pesticides that are harmful to Florida's wildlife. The students presented their research findings and provided Congressman Stark and his team with recommendations

on the topic, all the while showcasing Flanagan High's wonderfully creative student body.

The Urban Teacher Academy Program (UTAP) is a club on campus that introduces integrated teaching

experiences to students and takes them through the process of the work that the education profession

requires. In the beginning of the year we learn how to create lessons plans and strategies to meet the needs of

each student. During class time, we do a variety of team building exercises that are designed to help us work

better together. In this class we spend most of our time communicating with each other, which is extremely

important because it helps us with everything that we do. UTAP teaches students leadership, work skills, and

communication skills which are very necessary for the future.

One of the main components of this program is our field experience trips. Every Tuesday and

Wednesday, we go to two different elementary schools: Pines Lakes Elementary and Lakeside Elementary and

work with either kindergarten, first, second, or third graders. Upper level presents push-in lessons while level

one participates in a peer-mentoring reading program. Upper-level UTAPers go into a kindergarten, or first

grade class and present lessons they have created that are based in reading, math, or science. The elementary

school teachers have the opportunity to request lessons based on the curriculum that they are already teaching

and then get to grade the high-schoolers based on their performance within their classrooms. The Teen

Trendsetters program, which is sponsored by the Barbra Bush Foundation is a one-on-one peer mentoring

program with either first, second, or third grade students. High school mentors support students with their

reading skills and work with them as much as possible to help them reach their highest potential in school.

All UTAP students also work with ninth and tenth graders through Peter’s Peeps which is an additional peer

mentoring program that UTAP runs on campus in partnership with mentors from Peer Counseling and Student

Government. We meet with these students every other Thursday and Friday and make sure to provide as much

help and support as we possibly can to help them thrive and become better as they navigate through high

school.

Here in UTAP we are constantly planning activities and team-building exercises for the club and for the

students at the elementary schools. One of our biggest yearly events is Trunk or Treat. This takes place in

October near Halloween and we invite clubs from our school and the kids from Pines Lakes and Lakeside

Elementary. We work hard towards making Trunk or Treat enjoyable and fun for everyone. Each car that we

use is decorated by the members of UTAP and other clubs that join in the fun. We all use our creative process

to come up with fun and immersive games for everyone to enjoy along with the decorative process of each car.

Everyone who participates and comes to Trunk or Treat leaves with a smile, a happy heart, and A LOT of candy.

Online Educational ResourcesStudents use a variety of online platforms to deepen and enrich their understanding of academic content. These resources are all available from home! Students can continue using these online resources to receive additional support at home at their own pace. Ask your child’s teacher how these resources can best be utilized at home!

Unit tests are a significant part of a student’s overall class average in Algebra 1 and Geometry. In the last two weeks, students have taken their first round of rigorous unit tests. Since then, all students were presented with an opportunity to remediate (repair) and enrich (further grow) their understanding of the content. Speak with your child about their grades on their recent unit tests and discuss if the remediation and enrichment opportunities are right for your child. Together, we can ensure that your child succeeds.

The focus in 9th and 10th grade ELA has been preparing our students to have success on the FSA exam. Teachers have worked on strengthening skills, comprehension, and test taking strategies. In 11th

and 12th grade, students work on strengthening their reading comprehension and writing skills to achieve high marks on the SAT. Teachers in the ELA department leverage online resources like Khan Academy to reach every student where they are.

A Huge Success!

This year, 10 members from our HOSA chapter went on a journey to Camp Kulaqua in High Springs, Florida for the 2019 HOSA Fall Leadership Development Academy (FLDA). FLDA is an annual conference held in November designed to shape future health professionals into exceptional representatives for their local chapters. There, HOSA members got to engage in different workshops led by our state officers. These workshops gave members a taste on important aspects of leadership. Some of the workshops included: parliamentary procedure, time management techniques, thinking outside the box, efficiency tips, how to be a state officer and more! Aside from workshops, members got to meet other students from HOSA chapters all over the state. This gave them an opportunity to network with peers and form friendships. Camp K was a remarkable experience. Some complementary activities that members participated in were, campfire sing alongs, mini zoo exploration, mini field day competitions, and more. Each activity was unique, and we cannot wait to go back next year. To see more about our trip to FLDA you can visit our Instagram to see our travel vlog: @flanaganhosa
