Visitors Fee to be Introduced

Members will be aware from the previous Circulars that the Executive has decided that a $5.00 fee should be charged to all visitors attending club walks commencing on 1 January 2020.

The reason for this decision is that the Executive considers that it is appropriate for visitors on club walks to make a contribution towards the cost of insurance. Members will be aware that when visitors complete the Attendance Sheet they then become Temporary Members of the club for the purpose of that activity and they are then covered by the club’s personal accident insurance. Many other bushwalking clubs have such a fee to help cover costs.

Walk leaders will collect the cash from each visitor and will then be able to transfer the money by a bank transfer.

Chatter Around the Hut

A copy of the original visitor’s book (1941-2009) remains available in the Walter Briggs hut and provides an interesting read for present day visitors. An extract from 1958, reproduced below, tells us when and by whom the current wood shed was constructed.

With temperatures on Donna Buang routinely 10 degrees Celsius lower than experienced in the township of Warburton, a ready supply of dry and seasoned fire wood from the woodshed provides an essential comfort to the Walter Briggs Hut. The following extract from the visitor’s log reminds us when and who built the current woodshed:

The entry reads: “8th – 9th November 1958. Work Party – Rebuilt the woodshed under the capable direction of Harold Ogilvie – also general tidying, bludging etc. The track clearers spent the weekend working(?) on the Boobyalla track.”

As shown in the next photo the “Nov ‘58” date is also engraved into one of the roof joists inside the shed. Check it out on your next visit.

Advance to 2019 and our humble woodshed is looking more like a “lean-to” with ambitions of becoming a “flatpack” and so great minds are now being turned to rebuilding the historic woodshed.

If you are interested in assisting the project to rebuild the woodshed please contact Lance Cranage: [email protected]

Members' Dates of Birth

The Club wants to obtain the date of birth of all Members and is seeking your assistance. At the meeting on 21 October, the Executive Committee agreed this information would be useful for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it would help identify people who are coming up for a major birthday so they can be recognised. It's an established tradition to celebrate the 80th and 90th birthday of Members, either on a walk or in some other way. A list of birth dates would be very useful for this. Secondly, it will allow us to see the age profile of the Club and identify trends that might help us to find ways to attract new members.

Date of birth information is provided on Membership application forms but it has never been collected into a usable form. Going back over old records to extract the information would be possible but very time-

consuming.

We're requesting Members to send their date of birth to the Membership Officer, John Rankin, either by email ([email protected]), by phone (9842 1350 or 0408 373 148) or by post (W. J. Rankin, 13 Verdi Court, Templestowe, VIC 3106).

The information will be held in confidence and never published in the Membership register or otherwise made available.

Thanking you in anticipation, Trevor Rosen, President

John Rankin, Membership Officer
