Mega Yachts: The Latest Craze for Billionaires
The largest private yacht in the world is the 180 meter-long Azzam, owned by the Emir of Abu Dhabi. Arab sheikhs, Russian oligarchs and American billionaires are battling to own the most luxurious and most expensive ship. The largest private yacht in the world cost around 600 million euros. The Azzam, which belongs to the Emir of Abu Dhabi, is a staggering 180 meters long. And it’s high maintenance — staff, diesel and servicing cost around ten million euros a year. These mega yachts are designed and furnished by top architects, like Philipp Starck. This film takes viewers onto some of the most expensive yachts in the world. Meet Norwegian ship designer Espen Oeino, who has inside knowledge of what this league of luxury really means. His clients’ requests have included a helicopter landing pad, and even a personal submarine on board. Along with destinations like Monaco, Miami and Dubai, yacht owners have recently also begun heading to more adventurous locations, like the Arctic Ocean.

Lebanon - A Country Held Hostage
In Lebanon, Hezbollah now controls broad areas of political and social life. It has become a state within a state. How can the "Party of God" be confronted? In Lebanon, no important political decisions are taken any more without Hezbollah, the Shiite "party of God". Since the end of the civil war in 1990, multi-ethnic and multi-religious Lebanon has been exposed to growing political divisions. Supported and financed by Iran, Hezbollah now threatens to destabilize the country and the region. As a political party, Hezbollah holds two cabinet positions in the government. The Sunni Prime Minister Saad Hariri is dependent on the goodwill of Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s Secretary General − not least because Hezbollah’s militia is far stronger than the Lebanese army. In his impressive speeches, Nasrallah threatens not only Israel, but also the US. Israel sees Hezbollah as the extended arm of its arch enemy Iran. A renewed war between Hezbollah and Israel would raze Lebanon to the ground and also cause considerable damage in Israel. Tensions between the US and Iran increase the risk of conflict. This film shows how Hezbollah has skillfully increased its power in recent years and developed into a state within a state. But there is growing resistance. Civil society forces are trying to overcome religious conflicts and use democratic means to break new ground.

Africa Rising - Part 1
As the cultural sector is becoming more diverse, all eyes are on African pop culture. Its stars are gaining international attention. But culture from Africa has long influenced artists in the West. A look at current trends and their historical roots. Cinema, exhibitions, fashion and music from Africa are creating a buzz around the world. And not for the first time — artists from Africa have often been a source of inspiration for artists from the west. Africa Rising explores the boom of African pop culture and its impact on the west, with help from the continent’s biggest stars and people who have witnessed the developments first hand. The film travels in time from the independence era to the Cold War, the end of apartheid and to the renaissance of today. We explore the artists and styles that have flourished in Europe and the US, like Miriam Makeba, Papa Wemba, Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti, Wizkid and Die Antwoord. The film is also dedicated to pop culture icons of the African diaspora, like James Brown, Bob Marley and Public Enemy. And Maître Gims, who was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is now one of the most successful French-speaking music artists in the world.

The Truth about Lying
People lie - usually several times a day. Lying is considered immoral, but we've been built for it. And we are not alone. Dishonesty is an integral part of the social world, and numerous animal species are also skilled deceivers. People lie between two and 80 times a day. That may sound like a lot, but not all lies are equal. White lies are often a means of being polite, or of not offending someone. They help lubricate social interactions, and maintain harmonious coexistence. Black lies, on the other hand, are told with the intent to deceive, or for self-interest. Scientists have discovered that the brain actually adapts to dishonesty. The more someone lies, the less that person’s brain reacts. But humans are not the only species capable of dishonesty. Many animals also cheat. Especially social animals, such as pigs. Scientists from the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, have been researching dishonesty among pigs, and found interesting results. Indeed, it seems that lying and cooperation evolved in parallel. When it comes to humans, children as young as five are already capable of cheating. We tend to think that dishonesty is immoral, but the ability to lie signals healthy cognitive development in children. Scientists have long been searching for a way to reliably detect lying. This would be an asset in criminal investigations. However, classic lie detector tests, which measure pulse, heart rate, respiration, and skin conductance are inaccurate. But a scientist in Germany has managed to devise a questioning technique with which he is achieving surprisingly accurate results with a lie detector. And researchers in Granada have found that a person’s face and hands change temperature when they are lying. So can dishonesty be reliably measured using a thermal imaging camera?

Rota n' Roll
In the mid-20th Century, Franco’s Spain was impoverished and isolated from the rest of the world. But then a fresh breeze blew through the fishing village of Rota. In the mid-20th century, Rota was a small fishing and farming village on the Mediterranean coast of Spain’s Cadiz province. General Francisco Franco's authoritarian rule had isolated the country from the rest of the world. Then, one day, 8,000 American marines and engineers started building a huge naval base there, signaling the end of Rota’s dependence on fishing and agriculture and the emergence of a new world completely unlike the rest of the impoverished country. The Americans brought dollars, Levi jeans, Marlboro cigarettes, Harley-Davidson motorbikes, Rock 'n' Roll and the Blues, as well as missiles and many love stories.

Blood Trade - The Cost of Health
Human blood plasma is an important raw material of the global pharmaceuticals industry. In recent years, it’s also become a global market worth billions, fed mostly by the US. An industry of ‘donor tourism’ has sprung up on the border between the US and Mexico. At least 10,000 Mexicans cross the border into the US every week to donate blood plasma for money. The plasma then makes its way from the US to Europe. Year-long research into corporations in America, Mexico and Europe went into this film. The reporters interviewed dozens of donors and employees. Their accounts and the industry’s internal documents paint a picture of a market that places profit above donor protection, and that unscrupulously puts people at risk — both legally and in terms of their health. The report looks behind the scenes of this murky industry, and tells the personal story of one father and his daughter earning a living in the midst of it.

Farming Policies for Sale? - How Industry and the Agricultural
Lobbies Call the Shots
What kind of agriculture do we really want? How sustainable, regional, animal-friendly and expensive can it be? These and other pressing issues are part of a debate about radical agricultural reform of policy currently going on in Brussels. When negotiations on the common agricultural policy from 2020 are held in Brussels, one of the more contentious issues will be how to redistribute 60 billion Euros in EU agricultural subsidies. How will MEPs prioritize their options? Will they reach independent decisions or cave in to the big agricultural conglomerates and special interest groups? Our exclusive report uncovers their close ties with politicians in both Brussels and Berlin and shows how efforts to make farming more environmentally sustainable are being stymied.

Africa Rising - Part 2

Bohemian Switzerland by Rail
A train journey through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains between Germany and the Czech Republic. Peculiar rock formations and the river Elbe shape this beautiful region. Since the mid 19th century, a railway line has been meandering through its valleys. In 2014, a new rail connection was completed: the National Park line connects the Czech Republic to Germany. It runs from Děčín to Rumburk via Bad-Schandau, Sebnitz, and Dolní Poustevna. The train conductors are all bilingual and happy to answer passengers’ questions about the area and its people. This film takes viewers from Dresden to Dìèín. It makes a detour on the National Park line through the rocky landscapes of Bohemian Switzerland. See the enchanted valleys that inspired romantic-era painters, and discover Edmundsklamm gorge on the German-Czech border, and its protected wildlife. The documentary also digs deep into the history of brown coal, which once brought the region industry and prosperity.

Battle of Social Networks
Social networks have become battlefields for truth and power. They provide their users with great freedom. But they are also being utilized to manipulate people, and sway public opinion by means of "fake news." Five billion people currently own a mobile phone. More than half of those are smartphones. Millions of texts, images and videos circulate daily through social networks. Their reach is global, from dictatorships to the most consolidated democracies. Social networks are a great tool for civic engagement and social exchange. But it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish between real and false content. A battle to take control of the truth has begun. Taking the example of Catalan’s unauthorized 2017 independence referendum, this documentary analyzes the impact social networks are having on our lives. It explores whether the platforms have become a threat to democracy and to electoral systems, and asks whether they have become the new mass media. It seems that governments now fear the freedom of speech they once fought to establish - because this very "freedom" has facilitated the spread of "fake news," and is jeopardizing global stability. Some analysts predict that by 2022, half of online content will be "false.” How can professional press organizations distinguish real from false content? And how are citizens handling fake news? Can they detect it? Or are they spreading it?

Rebuilding Mosul
After nine months of devastating battle, Mosul was finally liberated from ISIS in July 2017. The city is the second largest in Iraq, and it was here that the Caliphate was proclaimed in 2014. A look at the situation in Mosul today. The rule of so-called Islamic State has left deep scars in Mosul. Thousands of buildings were reduced to rubble during the fight to regain the city from the armed group. Some say the battle in Mosul on 10 July, 2017 was the most serious combat operation since World War II. Mosul needs to be rebuilt - but who will oversee this? Who will restore the cultural heritage destroyed by ISIS? And who is capable of keeping the city secure? Filmmaker Anne Poiret spent a year following Iraqis’ efforts to rebuild their city. Her film documents the difficulties they face, and portrays those who have lost everything. Some of Mosul’s residents are carrying on the search for the thousands of people still missing today. Others are considering leaving the city. And others still yearn for revenge. But there are also those who wish for the return of ISIS. These days, families of supporters haunt the city, hiding from Shiite militias sent there to hunt them down. The future of the country, the entire region, and possibly the whole world rests on the situation in this city. And warns that failures of the international community, laxity of the Iraqi administration, and a rise in corruption and instability could provide ISIS with an opening to regain strength.

Displaced: Oil and Ruin - The Venezuelan Exodus
Venezuela is experiencing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Hunger is widespread and there is a severe shortage of medicines. The UN estimates that more than four million people have now fled what was once South America’s richest nation. Venezuela is in the grips of what is now the world’s second largest refugee crisis after Syria. But unlike Syria, Venezuela is not mired in civil war, and the country is sitting on the world’s largest proven oil reserves. How could such a rich nation be driven into ruin? Where has the country’s wealth gone, and why are its people starving? Corruption and mismanagement are driving displacement worldwide. The majority of the world’s refugees and migrants are fleeing from countries in the top 10 of Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index - places like Afghanistan, Syria, South Sudan and Somalia. Venezuela was once one of the world’s wealthiest countries and a showcase of democracy. The country enjoys an abundance of natural resources, including oil, gold, diamonds and coltan. But rather than invest in its people and economy, this wealth has been squandered. Today Venezuela is mired in corruption, and deindustrialization, debt, political conflict, authoritarianism and poverty are the order of the day. The billions in profits generated by the oil business during the boom years between 2003 and 2014 have largely ended up in private pockets. And once oil prices collapsed in 2014, Venezuela was plunged into economic crisis. Nicolás Maduro, who rose to the presidency after Hugo Chávez died in 2013, has installed loyal military officers in key economic positions. Venezuela is now little more than a state-run criminal enterprise. At the same time, the country has become a pawn in a geopolitical contest over power and natural resources, with the US, Russia and China all looking to assert their own interests. Every two seconds, a person is forced to flee their home. Today, more than 70 million people have been displaced worldwide. The DW documentary series ‘Displaced’ sheds light on the causes of this crisis and traces how wealthy industrialized countries are contributing to the exodus from the Global South.

Gidon Kremer - Finding His Own Way - Portrait of an Artist
Musician, orchestra founder, artistic activist and intellectual: Violinist Gidon Kremer is one of the most exciting artists of our age. This film follows Kremer on tour around the world for a year and looks back on important stages in his life. Kremer has been performing for half a century and has recorded more than 100 CDs. From Astor Piazzolla’s tangos to the austere music of his contemporaries Arvo Pärt and Alfred Schnittke, Kremer has always had his finger of the pulse of the times. The documentary portrays an artist whose life is inextricably linked to the history of music in the second half of the 20th and early 21st Centuries and who has had a decisive influence on modern musical life and discourse. Filmmaker Paul Smaczny accompanied Kremer for a year, observing him with the Kremerata Baltica Chamber Orchestra in Paris and in his hometown of Riga and at solo concerts in Moscow, Tokyo and Stuttgart, and discovers more about his social and political views. The film also looks at the important encounters and partnerships that have shaped the artist to this day: with his teacher David Oistrach and with great conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and James Levine.

Pioneers of the Skies - Non-stop over the Atlantic
The first successful transatlantic flight in 1919 was a milestone for mankind. This film tells the stories of the people who dared to undertake the dangerous journey. Discover the records and setbacks in this exciting chapter of aviation history. Ever since the invention of aircraft, pilots have dreamed of flying across the Atlantic non-stop. Daring men and women risked their lives in pursuit of this goal. Then, just 100 years ago, the first transatlantic flight succeeded. The story began in 1918. The British Newspaper ‘Daily Mail’ announced a 10,000 pound prize for the "aviator who shall first cross the Atlantic in an aeroplane in flight from any point in the US, Canada or Newfoundland to any point in Great Britain or Ireland in 72 continuous hours." In 1919, four teams would attempt the crossing from Newfoundland. They were all unemployed fighter pilots. Only two succeeded — John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown. On 15 June 1919, the two men wrote aviation history when they landed in Ireland in a modified bi-plane bomber. But their glory was short-lived. In the 1920s, several other attempts and records followed. Perhaps the most famous was made in 1928 by the two Germans Hermann Köhl and Ehrenfried Freiherr Günther von Hünefeld, and the Irishman James Fitzmaurice. The three men were scheduled to land in New York, and thousands gathered to watch their arrival. But flight conditions were treacherous. Köhl would later describe dramatic scenes when the engine stuttered, storms and fog, hunger and cold, and fear of being lost forever. In the end, the team missed their destination in New York. But they managed an emergency landing on Greenly Island. With that, they had successfully touched down on North American soil, making them the first to complete an east-west non-stop transatlantic flight. The film relays personal stories of courage and determination, from heroes and pioneers who changed the face of travel forver.

Sudan - A TV Show for Start-Ups
Youth unemployment cuts deep in Sudan. But a hit TV show has inspired young entrepreneurs. Start-ups compete in the show - and the format has done more than achieve high ratings in the struggling country. Sudan’s recent history has been shaped by conflict. The country was repeatedly in the headlines because of civil war, political unrest, and corruption. It has been a tough time for the Sudanese population, including for its younger generations, which are faced with high rates of youth unemployment. But around five years ago, a new show was broadcast called Mashrouy, which means "My Project” in Arabic. The format is that people present start-up and business ideas, and compete for funding. A panel of economic experts selects the most promising founders and supports them in building the business over a period of several months. There are similar shows in Europe and the US such as "The Apprentice." But Mashrouy aims to do more than achieve good ratings. The show wants to help combat the country’s many problems. Its popularity has come as a surprise. In fact, when the ‘Sudanese Young Businessmen Association’ (supported by the British Council) initiated the TV show in 2013, they weren’t sure it would attract any interest. Becoming an entrepreneur is not a traditional vocation in Sudan. But the show became a hit. Over 5000 company founders have since applied, and Mashrouy has come to be one of the most widely viewed television shows in Sudan.

China - The New World Power
China’s new Silk Road is its flagship project of the 21st century. More than 60 countries are involved. Both economic and political power are at stake. What effect is China’s rapid growth having on Europe? The official name of the mega project is the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). But many are calling it China’s new Silk Road, referencing the wealth and glory of the ancient trade route. Beijing has spent hundreds of billions funding infrastructure projects all over the world, from Ghana to Greece. Ports have been taken over; new railway lines are being constructed. China has already bought hundreds of companies abroad, and continues to buy more. Its aim is to overtake the US as the global superpower. As such, the mega project is about more than foreign investment. It is about power, and political influence. The days when China served as cheap labor source for western countries have long past. China’s economy has been growing for 40 years, and hundreds of millions of Chinese people have been lifted out of poverty. In the fight for world domination, the US has declared a trade war on China and imposed billions of dollars of tariffs on Chinese imports. But President Donald Trump’s crusade against China spells trouble for global trade, and also for Germany. Cars are an important German export. Already now, more cars are sold in China than in the US. The Chinese market is important across sectors — from cars, to smart tech and artificial intelligence. And it is only a matter of time before China, with its more than 1.4 billion population, replaces the US as the largest export market.

On Route 7 into the Heart of Patagonia
A trip along Chile’s National Route 7, the Carretera Austral, takes us into the stunning wilderness of Patagonia - a place that many German emigrants chose as their new home almost a century ago. The Carretera Austral is straddled by mountain ranges, primeval forests, fjords, volcanoes and a huge ice field. It has taken decades to carve its way through the almost impassable terrain - even now a lot of traffic is forced to take a detour across the border into Argentina. The military dictator Augusto Pinochet made the construction of the road a national priority in the 1970s, sending thousands of soldiers to the region to work under the most adverse conditions. One of the last surviving members of Pinochet's junta, former military police chief Rodolfo Stange, talks about the road’s strategic importance for the regime. German marine biologist Vreni Häussermann tells us about a catastrophe in one of the Patagonian fjords - an event that underlines how economic expansion along the route has adversely affected the natural environment in southern Chile. On our journey we meet descendants of German emigrants who found a new home in Patagonia’s remote vastness after the First World War. An insight into the past and present of this unique region.

Displaced: Tomatoes and Greed - The Exodus of Ghana's Farmers
What do tomatoes have to do with mass migration? Tomatoes are a poker chip in global trade policies. Subsidized products from the EU, China and elsewhere are sold at dumping prices, destroying markets and livelihoods in Africa in the process. Edward still harvests tomatoes. But he is no longer on his own fields in Ghana. He now works on plantations in southern Italy under precarious conditions. The tomatoes he harvests are processed, canned and shipped abroad - including to Ghana, where they compete with local products. The flood of cheap imports from China, the US and the EU has driven Ghana’s tomato industry to ruin. Desperate farmers find themselves having to seek work elsewhere, including in Europe. For many, the only route available is a dangerous journey through the desert and across the Mediterranean. Ghana is a nation at peace, a democracy with free elections and economic growth. Nonetheless, tomato farmer Benedicta is only able to make ends meet because her husband regularly sends her money from his earnings in Italy. A former tomato factory in Pwalugu, Ghana, illustrates the predicament. This factory once helped secure the livelihood of tomato farmers across the region. Today it lies empty, guarded by Vincent, a former employee who hopes to keep it from falling into ruin. In the surrounding region, the market for tomatoes has collapsed and most farmers are no longer growing what could easily be Ghana’s ‘red gold’. An agricultural advisor is trying to help local tomato farmers, but has little by way of hope to offer. Conditions like this are what drive local farmers to cut their losses and head for Europe. Once in Italy, migrants from Ghana and other African countries are forced to live in desperate conditions near the plantations. They work as day laborers for extremely low wages, helping to grow the very tomatoes that are costing people back home their work and livelihoods. These days, canned tomatoes from China, Italy and Spain are available for purchase on the market of Accra. Some may call this free trade. But economist Kwabena Otoo says free trade should open doors; not destroy people’s lives. Every two seconds, a person is forced to flee their home. Today, more than 70 million people have been displaced worldwide. The DW documentary series ‘Displaced’ sheds light on the causes of this crisis and traces how wealthy industrialized countries are contributing to the exodus from the Global South.

Germany’s Problem with Plastic
Germany is the European champion when it comes to generating packaging waste - despite its longstanding system to separate trash. And the figures for plastic waste are nearly ach sotwice what they were 15 years ago. Recycling started in Germany decades ago and plastic has long been known to be a big environmental problem. And yet events like the Hamburg Marathon continue to produce mounds of waste. Thousands of single-use plastic cups, for example, end up being incinerated. And plastic is everywhere - even where you would least expect it. In 2018, 70,000 tonnes of agriplastics were used in German fields. Only 20 percent were recycled. Microplastics in soil are at least as big a problem as they are in the world’s oceans and seas. What can we do to improve the situation? Plastic is practical - and it’s cheap. In Germany, the government also subsidizes plastic production because it does not tax the crude oil used to manufacture it. As a result, it’s cheaper to create new single-use plastic than to recycle it. And recycling creates different problems. Studies show that people in Germany collect a staggering 75 percent of the plastic used. But despite what many people believe only a fraction of it is actually put to a new use. The rest is either sent abroad - much of it to Turkey, with far-reaching consequences for the country’s waste disposal system and its environment. Or the waste is incinerated and the highly toxic residues end up being buried in the soil here in Germany. Why isn’t more of our plastic waste recycled?

Can the Citarum still be Saved? - The World’s Most Polluted River
The Citarum River in Indonesia is the world’s most polluted river. One of the main polluters is the fashion industry: 500 textile factories throw their wastewater directly into the river. The filmmakers teamed up with international scientists to investigate the causes and consequences of this pollution. With the help of concerned citizens, the ‘Green Warriors’ team analyzed water samples, rice, children’s hair, etc. and discovered that toxic chemicals are endangering the lives of the 14 million Indonesians who use the Citarum water. What was once considered paradise is now a brown sludge of human waste and dangerous substances like nonylphenol, antimony and tributylphosphate. These findings prompted the Indonesian government to change its wastewater regulations. Recently, President Joko Widodo announced a new plan to clean up the Citarum. The fashion brands questioned in this documentary promised to better monitor their Indonesian suppliers.

Eva A-7063 - Victim of Auschwitz Twin Experiments
Eva Mozes Kor was experimented on as one of Dr. Josef Mengele's twins at Auschwitz. After decades of anguish, she decided to forgive the Nazis - and came to be one of the best-known and most-active Holocaust survivors in the world. At the age of 10, Eva Mozes Kor became a victim of Josef Mengele, the doctor at the Auschwitz concentration camp notorious for his barbaric experiments on twins. Eva and her twin sister Miriam lost both of their parents and two older sisters in the Holocaust; only Eva and Miriam survived. Eva later married an American and moved to the United States to begin a new life. In 1984, she founded the organization CANDLES together with the help of her sister Miriam. The name is an acronym for Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors. Working with the organization, Eva was able to locate 122 other survivors of Dr. Mengele’s horrific experiments around the world. In 1995, Eva also founded CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center to educate the public about eugenics, the Holocaust, and the power of forgiveness. That same year she publicly forgave the Nazis for what had been done to her - a decision that brought her international attention. Eva circled the globe delivering her message of peace, kindness, healing and self-empowerment for future generations. Her lessons went far beyond her own experience, addressing current global atrocities and two of the biggest problems facing today's youth: bullying and discrimination. Eva Mozes Kor died on 4 July 2019 in Krakow.

Hoping for a Better Life - The History of Europeans in America
Thirty million Europeans emigrated to the USA in the 19th Century to realize their American dream. But the continent was settled at the expense of its original inhabitants. The United States is always seen as the land of dreams and unlimited possibilities. Our starting point for this account of the settlement of America’s eastern seaboard by European pioneers is Florida, where the Spaniards first settled in the early 16th Century.. Their legacy today is 50 million Americans who speak Spanish as their first language -more than in Spain itself. But it was the largely Protestant British who made up the second wave of immigrants. They founded Jamestown in Virginia and settlements in Massachusetts and pushed northwards into Canada. While the southern states largely lived from the proceeds of slavery, the northern states developed into booming industrial centers that would ultimately defeat them in the civil war. It was here that the American dream of dishwasher to millionaire originated.

Displaced: Drought and Floods - The Climate Exodus
More people around the world are fleeing from climate change than from war. If human-induced climate change continues at the current rate, the World Bank warns that by 2050 there could be as many as 180 million climate refugees. The number of climate refugees is rising - and yet the status of ‘climate refugee’ has yet to be officially recognized by national or international law. One factor is illustrative of the devastating impact of climate change on countries and communities: water. Recent years have seen an increasing number of floods and droughts. A third of the global population lives near the coast, and an estimated 700 million people are facing rising sea levels. In the Philippines more than 85 percent of the population say they are feeling the impact of climate change in the rising frequency of flooding and violent typhoons. Farmers in the highlands of Guatemala, on the other hand, are suffering extreme drought. Both water scarcity and flooding are sparking mass migration. In response, rich countries such as the US are tightening their immigration policies. Yet lifestyles within industrialized nations are a major cause of climate change. Seven countries — including the US, China, Russia, India and Germany — are responsible for over 60 percent of global CO2 emissions. The US is the country with the highest emissions, yet it also has the most climate change deniers - notably President Donald Trump. Trump withdrew from the Paris climate agreement. He is also an advocate of fossil fuels and wants to build a wall to keep out migrants. Meanwhile, climate activist Greta Thunberg is fighting for change with her ‘Fridays for Future’ movement, and many others around the world are protesting in hopes of mitigating the impending climate catastrophe. Nonetheless, most people in affluent countries are unwilling to change their lifestyles. They are the ones who have a choice. For the countless thousands of climate refugees who are fleeing their homes, it is their very survival that is at stake. Every two seconds, a person is forced to flee their home. Today, more than 70 million people have been displaced worldwide. The DW documentary series ‘Displaced’ sheds light on the causes of this crisis and traces how wealthy industrialized countries are contributing to the exodus from the Global South.

The BND File - German Shipping Companies and the Arms Trade
Germany’s secret service, the BND, is heavily involved in the delivery of weapons to crisis areas of the world. As this documentary shows, it has - among other things - played along with arms deals made by German shipping companies. Top secret operations are carried out silently, bypassing the federal authorities by exploiting a blind spot between the Foreign Trade and the War Weapons Control Acts. The weapons are not shipped from Germany, but via a secret port in Ukraine that does not appear on any map. The trail leads to Kyiv, where a former Ukrainian president confirms the existence of the port and the "delicate” arms deals. For the first time, the chief of the country’s secret service acknowledges that German companies are involved in the shipping of military weapons via the Ukraine, and provides the film team with the first and only television pictures of the secret port. Research in the USA throws up more alarming indications. American satellite images show the port where heavy-lift carriers load tanks, howitzers and other military equipment. At least two German shipping companies are involved in the operation. The plethora of secret documents points in particular to a former world market leader in the heavy-lift cargo business, the Bremen-based in Beluga shipping company, which has since ceased trading. Four of its ships are explicitly named. Loading and stowage lists show that the shipping company repeatedly planned and shipped armaments - and one man, a BND officer with the code name "Klaus Hollmann,” was always involved. The German parliament only found out about the BND’s involvement in the arms deliveries through the makers of this film and is now trying to get to the bottom of the affair. Intelligence experts see this as an important step in averting further damage to German Democracy.

Odessa - A City at the Intersection of Cultures
Odessa is a cultural microcosm, a melting pot of different ethnicities, and a bridge to Europe. This documentary explores the vibrant city in Ukraine and its rich traditions 30 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. If there’s one thing everyone knows from Odessa, it’s the Potemkin Stairs on the Black Sea coast, where the memorable scene from Sergej Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin was filmed. In it, a stroller hurtles step by step down the stairs with a helpless child inside. It’s a frenetic scene of fear and human powerlessness that became an icon of film history. The stairs lead to a city that has long served as backdrop for world theater. Odessa is a melting pot of different nationalities, and is still acclaimed today for its rich and varied culture. Odessa was founded in 1974 by Catherine the Great. She wanted a city that would open the doors to Europe. Since then, Odessa’s international cultural influence has been tangible. Architect Francesco Boffo was commissioned to turn the city into an open-air museum of neoclassical architecture to compete with the likes of St. Petersburg in Russia. Odessa’s charm grew legendary; foreigners were welcome, and the city became a magnet for creative types from all over the world. For decades, this port city was home to Russian poets and painters, Ukrainian writers and musicians, Jewish architects and opera singers, Polish poets and sculptors. Renowned writers like Nikolai Gogol and Isaac Babel left their mark on this beautiful city. And still today, countless artists, writers and musicians continue to shape modern-day Odessa. This film is a voyage of discovery, revealing the many different facets of this cultural hub on the Black Sea.
