January 2020

Dear St. John’s Family, I have always been quite sentimental when it comes to the beginning of a New Year. I often spend the last week of December and the first few days of January looking back over the past year. There are moments of gratitude for the grace and blessings I was willing to see, moments of regret or disappointment at mistakes made and expectations not met, and there are moments filled with excitement and hope as I shift my attention towards the new opportunities that lie ahead.

This year, there is a particular piece of scripture that has caught my attention. In the book of Revelation, Jesus, while sitting on the heavenly throne, states, "Behold, I make all things new." He continues, "Write these words down, for they are trustworthy and true. They are accomplished. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.” Every new year, every new opportunity and experience begins and ends with our loving God. That is a promise and a gift we mustn’t overlook as we begin a new chapter as God’s beloved.

Rather than focusing this New Year on resolutions that consist of doing better or doing more, such as losing more weight, saving more money, or spending more time _________ (you can fill in the blank) – what if our resolution focused less on what we can do and more on what God is capable of? What if we resolved to rediscover and explore all the things that God makes new – relationships, faith, ministries, passions.

I invite you to join me in a new type of resolution: a resolution that awakens us to our creator, redeemer, and sustainer. A resolution that cannot fail because it begins and ends with Jesus himself.

I remain faithfully yours,

Amanda+

Come sail with us across the seas to Ethiopia on Saturday, January 25, 2020, to hear the adventures of fellow parishioners Polly Ann and Ken Brown. Polly Ann and Ken left the University of California San Diego faculty life in 1972 to teach in Afghanistan but instead found themselves in the backwoods of Ethiopia working for a Christian Mission group, running a Provincial Government hospital. They have many experiences to share - some to cherish, to tell, and some to forget. Come to hear about those and some additional thoughts about developing country medicine/global health. All are welcome to hear this interesting and thought-provoking program. We gather in the Parish Hall from 10:00 until 11:30 a.m. for programs such as this and for fellowship and light refreshments. NOTE:

The lower parking lot door will be open until 10:10 a.m., so late arrivals should enter by the small Concord Street lot and kitchen door.

the St. John's Award. Following are the Vestry Resolutions:

Whereas Rob Ashton is ending his tenure as treasurer of the Vestry of St. John’s parish, it is the desire of the Vestry to recognize Rob’s dedicated service to the parish. Whereas Rob has always had stewardship at heart and has worked with the Capital campaign committee helping to raise one and a half million dollars for the addition of our new atrium and renovations to make our facilities more accessible and managing our debt reduction; Whereas Rob has worked tirelessly to maintain and grow the endowment of St. John’s parish keeping ever-present the goal of a balanced budget working with the Finance Committee and the financial institutions in which our funds are invested; Whereas Rob has worked closely with the parish Financial Secretary to reorganize and maintain the bookkeeping system of the parish; Whereas Rob has shared his gifts of hospitality on Sunday mornings welcoming parishioners as they arrive for services as well as participating in and helping with the Wednesday healing services; The Vestry of St. John’s parish resolves to express the appreciation of the parish to Rob by presenting him with the 2019 St. John’s Award. Resolved this day, November 19, 2019.

As a bunch of individuals, without the glue and spiritual guidance that holds us together, would we have the same impact as we strive to serve God’s people? I believe that having brothers and sisters in Christ makes us better. I believe that maintaining our “home” with financial support is in itself an important ministry that allows other ministries to thrive. And so, my 2020 resolution for St. John’s is to ensure the future of our “home” -- to keep interest costs to a minimum and repay our construction debt in a timely manner. If you are financially able, please join me. Your additional gift or pledge, large or small, will support all St. John’s ministries by ensuring that we will continue to be a loving family with a spiritually and financially sound home.

My 2020 New Year’s Resolution

for St. John’s

A devoted St. John’s family supports amazing ministries out of love. Through prayer, action, and dedication we care for each other, our neighbors, and the larger community around the world who need our help. I wonder, if we didn’t have our beautiful church and the other facilities on our campus, would these ministries exist? Could we be a vital family if we didn’t have a “home”?

The Messenger Page 6

Dear Members of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania,

I often speak and write about the Christian path as opening oneself to transformation. Transformation is the process by which we come to know, deeply, the love of God for us and all creation. We can put ourselves in the path to be transformed, but it is only the grace of God, in God’s good time, that affects our growing in holiness.

In a culture that prizes achievement, entrepreneurship, and “get up and go,” it feels counterintuitive to wait on God to fill us with grace. I think that God is moving and acting with grace all the time; we need to sharpen our focus to see God at work around us and in us.

Sometimes, God’s grace sneaks up on us, and we find ourselves awash in holiness as the Holy Spirit breaks in. Last Sunday afternoon, I experienced such a moment: I was sitting in a cavernous Roman Catholic church in Baltimore- St. Cyprian- attending a performance of Handel’s Messiah. Like many in the audience, I knew the music well, having sung it several times in choirs through the years. I knew what to expect. I enjoyed the choir, the orchestra, the exceptional soloists, the ornate sculptures and frescos decorating the church, the strong beam of sunlight reaching through the stained glass, landing in a colorful puddle in my pew. Everything felt good and fine- just as I had imagined it would. What I was not prepared for was the sudden breaking in of the Holy Spirit, bringing sharp tears to my eyes as the bass soloist sang his recitative from 1 Corinthians 15:

Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep; but we shall all be changed. In a moment, in a twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

All at once, I recognized the power of God in my life, my absolute inability to push away or control such a deluge of love, the conviction that God’s dream for us is to be changed, and that this gift of being changed would make me- and all who have gone before- whole. It was certainty. It was mighty. It was about deep love, and it was for me. (It’s for you, too!)

It was grace.

I left, having had a good cry, filled with the glorious sounds of a time-tested musical masterpiece, and ever more certain of God’s love and power in my life. Much more than I’d bargained for with the price of my ticket.

God moves with grace in and through our lives all the time. Grace- and our faith that God will turn up- is what changes us; we are Shaped by Faith.

We are about to celebrate one of the moments in which God gave us a gift for all time- the gift of our Savior, Jesus. Jesus came as a small baby but filled with the grace of God- grace to teach, shape, and save us.

My Christmas prayer for each of you is that you will experience God’s love this season- in little ways that will continue to work on you, in you, to shape you in faithfulness, as God’s beloved.

A holy Christmas to you all as we welcome the babe Jesus, God’s gift of love for us.

On Sunday, January 19, we will gather for a festive celebration of Puerto Rican food and fellowship at the charming Old San Juan Restaurant & Rum Bar in downtown Lancaster! Proceeds from this event will help fund the next mission trip to Puerto Rico, scheduled for February 16 – 22. Last year’s event was so popular we’ve added an additional seating! We’ve got the whole place to

ourselves and three seatings to choose from (1:00,

4:00 and 7:00 PM). There are only 180 seats available for the day and this event will be broadly promoted in multiple congregations and the community at large, so reserve your table now! Feast on island delicacies such as pollo guisado (stewed chicken), pernil (roasted pork), rice and beans, vegetarian delight, plátanos maduros (fried sweet plantains) and beef empanadas, all served buffet-style so you can sample it all! Old San Juan is located in the Hager Arcade adjacent to Central Market. There is plenty of street parking and free lots right around the restaurant. Thank you to everyone that supported the Youth by purchasing wreaths, greens and cookies. We greatly appreciate all the support for our teens. Thank you to everyone that supported our college students with gift cards. The Sunday School made cards for them and we put the gift cards in the cards. The young adults really enjoyed getting mail like that. Thank you, Thank you! Everyone is welcomed to join us for a fun night of games at St. John’s. We will be starting the evening with a potluck dinner at 6:00 on January 11 in the Parish Hall. We will have a sign up for this — watch for details. We will be having Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday along with Scout Sunday on February 2. All Scouts are invited to participate in the service. After the 10:15 service we will be supporting our Food Pantry with a soup and salad lunch. Upcoming diocesan events: • “Happening” retreat is a special retreat for

JUBILEE MINISTRIES

Since 1988, St. John’s has been designated by the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church as a Center for Jubilee Ministry because of the “direct and dynamic link between our theology and our ethics,” demonstrated in numerous outreach and neighborhood ministries. St. John’s takes very seriously God’s call to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, and care for the sick. (Matthew 25:35)

COMMUNITY

(Contact: Jeannie Zeller)

We’re looking for knitters, crocheters, quilters, crafty folks..... One of our goals as a Jubilee ministry is fellowship. EAGLE'S NEST

Our Eagle’s Nest After School program, serving 19, 4th and 5th grade students from Fulton Elementary School, has continued to enjoy a variety of enrichment activities. We spent a full day of Christmas crafts and activities including the assembly of the ingredients for Christmas M&M cookies in a jar, bead art, scavenger hunt in the church, games, and cookie decorating. Our student and adult bakers have been quite busy making and decorating Christmas cookies. They certainly enjoyed tasting along the way. Our young bakers proudly served their creations to friends and family at our Christmas Party on December 18th. Bruce and Leslie Tashler provided a delicious ham dinner with special guests, the Knouse family, in attendance. The students and volunteers then processed into the church where Pastor Amanda and Paul Reese led the students in song. Amanda offered a beautiful message of love and hope to the students, while John Knouse read the story of our Savior’s birth. The celebration concluded with cookies and ice cream in the Parish Hall. Angel Tree gifts were distributed to the students at this time. It was a room filled with joy and gratitude as the students opened their gifts. What a wonderful ministry, and many thanks to all who provided gifts to these terrific students. One final thank you goes out to Jeannie Zeller and her faithful Martha’s Ministry knitters for their recent donation to our Eagle’s Nest program. Many thanks to all who supported this ministry. Your generous donation from the proceeds of your recent St. Nick’s Knit sale will allow us to continue to provide quality enrichment activities and materials to our students.

Director of Eagle’s Nest Program

MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY

Every year at St. John’s we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday with two beautiful events that bring our neighbors and community into our holy spaces. During the events, we are challenged to remember and then live out - beyond just the weekend - Dr. King’s messages of equality, freedom, justice and love. On Sunday, we celebrate with music. The St. John’s community, neighbors and friends are invited to a free performance by the Music for Everyone Community Chorus at 3:00 Sunday, January 19, 2020. Under the direction of Jonathan Shoff, they romp through music of the world, often in other languages. All funds collected during the free will offering will benefit MFE’s mission to provide resources and experiences in support of music education to transform lives, schools and communities. On Monday, we celebrate Dr. King’s birthday with a day camp for kids in grades 1-5. On Monday, January 20, 2020, approximately 30 - 45 kids from the city and surrounding county will join us for a day of games, movement, discussion, stories, and art, as we explore the idea of Living with Kindness. Our workshops this year include Measuring Kindness, Yoga (the excellent folks at AIM to Empower are interested in helping), Team Building Challenges with Amanda and John, and learning about Truth Tellers. We eat a delicious chili lunch together and sing Happy Birthday to Dr. King before enjoying cupcakes. It’s a beautiful day, full of joy, controlled chaos, and carrying on some of the message that Dr. King lived. Dr. King, driven by his faith, challenged us all to do the work necessary to create a more just, equal and love-filled community. A first step towards all that he asks is exactly what those children do on Monday, at his birthday celebration. They spend time with others who don’t know them very well, they learn something about others and in the process learn something about themselves, and they build community. Each year at St. John’s we make the space for that to happen. Thank you for your support – whether it be via volunteering to make chili, helping at the concert, or helping on Monday, or via your prayers (40 kids – we need prayers), or via the work you do to live out Dr. King’s message. We hope you’ll join us for the celebration this year.

In Peace,

Sue Dodge, Sue Heilman, Sue Martin and all the MLK Day Volunteers
