Sisters and Brothers, Happy New Year! I hope you are as excited as I am for what is sure to be a great one. As you know, elected officials from both political parties and at every level of government make decisions every day that impact our lives. Furthermore, they make decisions on issues that impact our livelihood. Some-times these are good and other times they are not so good. Nonetheless, it is important to make sure we have a collective voice on these policy issues, regardless of our political affiliation. Having a voice in the political arena often requires businesses, associations, organizations and in particular, Labor Unions, to work together with elected leaders on issues that are important to our industry. Establishing relationships with your local elected officials is essential to helping them understand what we do and why they should support our policy agenda. This is a very important piece of the lobbying process both at the Capitol and in communities across the state. During these last weeks leading up to the 2021 Iowa Legislative Session, I am asking all of you to reach out to your local legislators. There were several retirements and upsets, so your Representative or Senator could have very well changed. Whether it be a phone call, email, or attending a vir-tual event or in person as you are comfortable in this current climate, introduce your local representatives to our industry, your role in it, and explain why the issues we advocate for are important. We have a statewide network of legislators who support our industry and with sincere efforts we may be able to expand that support amongst Democrats and Republicans. Your outreach can help strengthen and foster these relationships while also developing new partnerships. After an election, regardless of who controls the Legislature, our issues are about policy, not politics. Electri-cal licensure, safety standards, funding for apprenticeship programs, DAT funding for apprentices and a robust Building Trades agenda are all issues that need to be addressed moving forward and both parties will be in-volved in advancing and growing these priorities. Elected officials appreciate a local perspective and you as a constituent can provide it, regardless of political affiliation. I think having our members engaged in outreach and providing a positive message will go a long way in ensuring policymakers better understand our industry. Having bipartisan relationships across the state is imperative to moving our policy agenda forward. Those relationships are only stronger when made at the local level. Together we can have a strong collective voice on issues that are important to the work we do eve-ry day. If you need additional specific information on any issue we are moving during the 2021 legislative ses-sion, please feel free to contact me at the Hall. Due to the uncertainty of whether or not we are able host a January General Membership Meeting, the soonest I plan to hold a vote on the recently proposed Bylaws changes will be February. Additionally, February is when we typically hold an askings meeting in a year that the Des Moines Inside Agreement is to be renegotiat-ed. You will receive notice of these important Union business priorities prior to the meeting date(s) regardless. This year’s pin party will also be affected by COVID. You may notice that the pin party announcement is vague compared to our traditional notice. This is because we do not know whether or not we will be able to host activities such as social hour, dinner, or even live music at this point. If you feel comfortable doing so, please fill out the RSVP as you normally would. Should Prairie Meadows limit us to a specific number of peo-ple, we will start by giving the RSVP allotment to pin recipients first. If you are on the pin recipient list and you would like to receive your recognition next year instead please let us know that as well.

Brothers and sisters, I hope all is well with everyone who has dealt with the pandemic. I would like to remind everyone that there are some journeymen training classes going to be coming out shortly make sure we get signed up. Everyone will have to wear a mask while attending class, and clean your boots off before entering the training center. I wish we would have been able to have a Christmas party and got everyone together but had to look out for the safety of the members and there family’s. Hopefully in 2021 the pandemic will end and we can get back to some normalcy whatever that will look like. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year In solidarity, Chad Lowe
Hello Brothers and Sisters, There is not much to report about the state of electoral politics in Iowa at the moment. The races we were wait-ing on last month are still in progress at the time of writing, and the next Iowa legislative session won’t begin until January 11th. Looking ahead to the 2021 session, we are likely to see more attacks on labor by the Repub-licans at the capital since they still have control of all three branches of the state government. They’ve already used their power in recent years to weaken collective bargaining rights for public employees and to make it possible for union contractors to deny unemployment to apprentices while they attend class. It is likely that
there will be more damaging legisla-tion in the works this time around so we’ll keep you updated as it comes out. In Solidarity, Wade Lester
