PASTOR’S COLUMN
When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to
devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, if my people who are
called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their
wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal
their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is
made in this place. (2 Chronicles 7:13-15, NRSV)
Confession: I struggle to pray aloud.
Second Confession: I struggle to pray with other people.
In sharing these confessions, I am hoping that some of you can relate. My best
prayers are between God and me, in time alone, away from other people. Also,
in sharing these confessions, I realized a long time ago that I must overcome
these confessions.
Jesus taught his disciples two important truths about prayer. First, he taught
that we are not to pray so that others can hear us for our own benefit. In other
words, we are not to pray so that others may be impressed with us. Second, Je-
sus taught us not to equate the length and fervor of our prayers with God’s will-
ingness to answer our prayers. And, in his model prayer – the Lord’s Prayer –
we are given a prayer that says everything that ever needs to be said and more.
Yet, it is simple and brief.
Thus, we might ask ourselves why is it important to pray together? If we have
abandoned the need to impress each other and have adopted the biblical portrait
of God, a Father who desires to hear from his children, then we can talk about
what public prayer can do.
Solomon did not want to build a Temple as a show piece for Jerusalem.
Rather, Solomon, like all who desire to build Temples, wanted to build a place
set apart for the people to meet God. He wanted a place set aside where God’s
people could come together, worship, pray and seek the LORD.
When we pray together, we learn to love one another, accept one another, trust
one another and grow closer to one another. Rather than individuals who go to
church, we become the community called First Baptist Church. We learn about
one another – our needs, hopes, aspirations, fears, worries and sins. We accept
that we are not perfect. We commit to God’s plan for our lives. We realize that
we are not alone.
Jim Cymbala in revitalizing the congregation of the Brooklyn Tabernacle,
made the decision that the church would flourish or flounder on the basis of
both its corporate prayer life and the individual prayer lives of the members.
If you share my initial confessions, you may worry about what others think of
your prayers. You may worry that they lack elegance, that they are trite, that
they are repetitive. Don’t worry. At First Baptist, you are among friends. You
are among friends who desire to hear your prayers and pray with you to the
glory of God, the good of this church and the context in which we’ve been
placed. Let’s be a praying church!
Grace and peace,
Tim
CALLED CHURCH CONFERENCE SUNDAY, JANUARY 29, 12 NOON
First Baptist Church will be called into conference at the conclusion of our Bap-
tist Men’s Day Worship Service to consider a motion from Building Committee
regarding Phase 2 of our church’s renovation project. The motion reads:
The Building Committee and Deacon Council of FBC Rutherfordton make a
motion to the church that McMillian/Pazdan/Smith Architects be instructed to prepare design and documentation for Phase 2 of our renovation for a
lump sum fee of $50,621. This fee also covers construction administration of Phase 2. Construction should begin immediately after completion of Phase 1.
This motion also comes to the church with the recommendation of the Deacon
Council. Just as with the vote on Phase 1, the Building Committee, Deacons and
Church will review the design and cost of Phase 2 and bring a recommendation to
the church prior to construction. Phase 2 includes wiring and technological up-
grades to the Sanctuary and renovation of classroom space beneath the Sanctuary.
Vote will be by secret ballot. Thank you for your prayerful participation in this
process!
