GROWING WITH JESUS IN ORDINARY TIME Last Sunday we learned about how Catholics consider Ordinary Time as a period in which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into our hearts and transform our lives. With that being said, there is a good ques!on that flows from this considera!on: How exactly can we grow in rela!onship with Jesus during Ordinary Time? Each person that exists is called to a rela!onship with God; all people are called to a life of holiness. As we know from our very own lives, rela!onships with others can be difficult to grow in. Not only that, but all of the different rela!onships we have can look very different from one another. With rela!onships being a complex and messy thing with our family and friends, it is understandable that many (if not most) of us feel lost/confused when it comes to our rela!onship with God. How do we know what our rela!onship with God is supposed to be like? How do we live out a life of personal holiness when holiness seems to come in so many different forms? Brothers and sisters, that is precisely where the beauty lies! Think of a rela!onship with God like a house. For each house to be built well, there needs to be a strong founda!on. Without that founda!on, the en!re house would completely fall apart during a storm. Once a strong founda!on has been laid, then you can personalize your house and truly turn it into a home. Each rela!onship with God is similar to that, it needs a strong founda!on before you can truly start to build the house that becomes a home. Without a strong founda!on in our lives of faith, our personal rela!onship with Jesus will fade to the back of our minds when the storms of life come thundering into our lives. So, what are the essen!al, founda!onal elements when it comes to our lives of faith as Catholics? How does the Church help us to build a strong founda!on so that we can truly grow in our personal rela!onship with Jesus? This founda!on is laid out for us through something called the Precepts of the Church. The precepts of the Church are the necessary and founda!onal elements that the Church asks of all Catholics to prac!ce so to help us grow in love of God and neighbor:

Precept 1: "You shall a!end Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obliga#on and rest from servile labor on Sundays." Precept 2: "You shall confess your sins at least once a year." Strictly speaking, we only need to take part in the Sacrament of Confession if we have commi"ed a mortal sin, but the Church urges us to make frequent use of Confession so that we grow in our rela!onship with God and receive the Eucharist in a state of grace. Precept 3: "You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season." Today, most Catholics receive the Eucharist at every Mass they a"end, but it wasn't always so. We should take care to discern ourselves properly so that we do not receive the Eucharist in a state of mortal sin (going to Confession before receiving the Eucharist). Precept 4: "You shall observe the days of fas#ng and abs#nence established by the Church." Fas!ng and abs!nence along with prayer and almsgiving, are powerful tools in developing our spiritual life. Today, the Church requires Catholics to fast only on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and to abstain from meat on the Fridays during Lent. On all other Fridays of the year, we may perform some other penance in place of abs!nence. Precept 5: "You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church." This means that we are to support the Church not only materially with our money, but also spiritually, all done in accord with our own individual abili!es. Our support of the Church can be through our money, volunteer !me, and our prayers. This is done not simply to maintain the Church but to spread the Gospel and bring others into the Church, the Body of Christ. Next week we will touch on this topic a bit more, and then discuss how we can build our personal/unique rela!onship with Jesus from this strong founda!on of living out the precepts of the Church. ACTION ALERT FROM THE NORTH DAKOTA

    CATHOLIC CONFERENCE

Tell Senators to Vote NO on SB 2180 Protect the Seal of Confession

A bill in the North Dakota Senate would force priests to violate the seal of confession or face criminal fines and even jail !me. In the United States, people expect to exercise their religion, including going to confession or ge-ng spiritual counseling, without the government invading their privacy and religious rights. SB 2180 would force priests and other members of the clergy to reveal what is said during confession and spiritual counseling in cases of suspected child abuse or vulnerable adult abuse. The Catholic Church is commi"ed to protec!ng children and vulnerable adults. Clergy are already mandated reporters when the informa!on is learned outside of the capacity of a spiritual advisor. The seal of confession, however, is inviolable. It can never be violated for any reason. All persons, of all faiths, should have this minimum expecta!on in the prac!ce of their religion.

Act now to defeat this dangerous a"ack on our fundamental freedoms.
